STP ShaliPrime WP WB
A water-based, penetrative primer-cum-sealer that prepares concrete, metal and masonry to bond firmly with STP’s water-based liquid waterproofing membranes.
What is it?
An emulsified, resin-based water-borne primer and sealer that anchors water-based liquid waterproofing membranes to the substrate. It carries anti-root character, which makes it suited to terraces, planters and landscaped decks.
Where is it used?
RCC terraces and roof slabs, basement and retaining walls, podium and planter-box decks, and priming over metal, asbestos-cement and timber ahead of a liquid membrane.
Why use it?
It penetrates the pores, seals fine surface porosity, bridges hairline cracks and lifts the pull-off adhesion of the membrane laid over it, cutting the risk of debonding and blisters.
How is it applied?
Stir well, let entrapped air escape, then brush, roller or spray one even coat onto a cleaned surface. Overcoat with the water-based liquid membrane once the primer is tack-free.
About STP ShaliPrime WP WB
STP ShaliPrime WP WB sits at the start of a water-based liquid-membrane waterproofing system, and its job is quietly decisive: the finished membrane is only ever as durable as its bond to the deck. Formulated as an emulsified resinous primer-cum-sealer, it wets out the concrete, soaks into the open capillary structure and leaves a thin, continuous film (around 50 microns dry) that both seals surface porosity and gives the membrane a receptive, chemically compatible key to grab. Because it is water-based, it works comfortably in the confined, poorly ventilated pockets that plague real sites, basement sumps, lift pits, planter boxes, without the odour and flammability of solvent primers.
For Indian conditions, two traits earn their keep. First, it is moisture-insensitive, so it tolerates the slightly damp, freshly cured slabs common on fast-track jobs where the programme rarely allows concrete to bone-dry. Second, it carries anti-root character, which matters wherever soil, planting or landscaping will eventually sit over the waterproofing, terrace gardens, podium decks and planter walls, where aggressive root systems otherwise probe every weak point in a membrane. Paired with STP’s water-based liquid membranes, it turns a good coating into a reliably bonded, long-service system rather than a film that lifts at the first thermal cycle.
The technical insight
A liquid waterproofing membrane fails at the interface far more often than in the body of the film. ShaliPrime WP WB is engineered to fix that interface. Its low-viscosity emulsion is highly penetrative, drawing resin into the concrete’s capillary pores rather than merely sitting on the crest of the surface; as the water phase evaporates, the resin coalesces into a locking film that is mechanically keyed into the substrate and chemically similar to the acrylic/emulsion membrane that follows. That shared water-based chemistry is why adhesion and inter-coat flexibility improve, the two films effectively knit instead of stacking. The sealer action closes fine porosity and bridges hairline cracks, which stops pinholing and out-gassing (the tiny blisters that form when air trapped in the slab pushes up through a wet membrane). Being moisture-insensitive, the resin still coalesces on a surface-damp slab, and with roughly 40% solids delivering a ~50 micron dry film at about 200 g/m², one economical coat does the anchoring work of a much heavier solvent primer.
Where it is used
- Priming RCC terraces and roof slabs before a water-based liquid waterproofing membrane
- Sealing basement raft, retaining and shear walls ahead of internal or external membrane systems
- Preparing podium decks, planter boxes and terrace gardens where anti-root protection is needed
- Priming water-retaining and sunken areas such as toilets, balconies and utility floors
- Bonding coat over metal surfaces before a compatible liquid membrane
- Priming asbestos-cement sheeting and roofs prior to overcoating
- Sealing timber and other absorbent substrates to reduce membrane soak-in
- Dust-binding and consolidating weak, porous concrete before membrane application
Key advantages
- Highly penetrative, resin soaks into the pores for a mechanical key rather than a surface film
- Seals surface porosity and bridges hairline cracks, reducing pinholing and blistering of the membrane
- Moisture-insensitive, cures on slightly damp, freshly cured slabs where solvent primers struggle
- Water-based and low-odour, safe for basements, sumps and other confined, poorly ventilated spaces
- Anti-root character suits terrace gardens, planters and landscaped podium decks
- Improves pull-off adhesion and inter-coat flexibility with STP water-based liquid membranes
- Fast handling, tack-free in about 30 minutes at 30 degrees C so the membrane can follow the same day
- Economical single-coat consumption of roughly 200 g/m and simple brush, roller or spray application
Limitations & considerations
- A primer only, it provides no standalone waterproofing and must be overcoated with a compatible liquid membrane
- Formulated for water-based liquid membranes, confirm compatibility before pairing with solvent-based or bituminous systems
- Cannot bridge structural or moving cracks, active cracks and joints need proper crack treatment or a joint sealant
- The substrate must be sound and clean, it will not compensate for laitance, oil, grease or loose, friable concrete
- Application temperature is limited to 10 to 50 degrees C, avoid priming in the rain or on ponded surfaces
- Short 6-month shelf life in the sealed pack means stock should be rotated and used fresh
Selection & best practice
Start with the surface, not the primer. Remove all loose gravel, dirt, oil, grease and laitance, blow the deck clean with dry compressed air, and grind or mechanically abrade to a smooth, sound base. Stir the pail with a slow-speed paddle to a homogeneous mix, then pause to let entrapped air escape before decanting, this prevents air streaks and pinholes in the primed film. Apply one even coat by brush, roller or spray at about 200 g/m; increase slightly on very porous or rough concrete but do not flood it. Watch the interval rather than the clock: overcoat with the water-based liquid membrane once the primer is genuinely tack-free (about 30 minutes at 30 degrees C, longer in cool or humid weather) and before airborne dust can settle on it. Prime and membrane the same day where possible so no contamination film builds up. Keep off the work in rain, on ponded water, or when the surface temperature is outside 10 to 50 degrees C, and always mock up a small area first to confirm coverage and adhesion on the specific substrate.

How we position STP ShaliPrime WP WB
ShaliPrime WP WB is the correct first step whenever the finish is one of STP’s water-based liquid membranes, and within the STP family it pairs naturally with those systems where a penetrative, anti-root primer is called for. Where the specification instead calls for a bituminous or torch-applied build-up, the bitumen-based ShaliTex Primer is the matching STP primer rather than this water-based grade, so choose the primer to suit the membrane chemistry. Across our other brands, teams standardising on a single-supplier acrylic-cementitious solution often move to Fosroc Brushbond RFX, a self-priming coating that can replace the separate primer-plus-membrane route on many terraces and wet areas; for resin flooring interfaces, note that flooring primers such as Fosroc Nitoprime 31 are a different, epoxy-based product and are not interchangeable with a waterproofing primer. Space Arc can specify and supply the full STP waterproofing stack, and cross-map it to Fosroc, Dr. Fixit, Sika or MC-Bauchemie equivalents where a project standard or approved-vendor list requires it.
Fosroc Brushbond RFX — A specifier may prefer Brushbond RFX when they want one Fosroc-branded, self-priming acrylic-cementitious coating that does the priming and waterproofing in a single system rather than a separate primer plus a liquid membrane.
