STP ShaliDCT 101
STP’s solvent-free, zero-VOC dehydrated coal tar coating that shields buried steel, pipelines and concrete from corrosion with a smoother, blister-resistant finish.
What is it?
A single-component, solvent-free anti-corrosive coating made from processed dehydrated coal tar. It replaces the older ShaliKote CT 101 in STP’s range.
Where is it used?
On steel and concrete that faces moisture and aggressive ground or effluent conditions – buried pipelines, tank exteriors, structural steel and below-grade concrete.
Why use it?
It puts down a dense, water-resistant barrier that keeps oxygen and moisture off the substrate, and its dehydrated formulation gives a better surface finish with less blistering than ordinary coal tar.
How is it applied?
Applied by brush, roller or spray onto a clean, dry, well-prepared surface in the number of coats the job specifies, with each coat allowed to cure before the next.
About STP ShaliDCT 101
STP’s ShaliDCT 101 sits in the long line of coal tar protective coatings that Indian engineers have relied on for decades to keep steel and concrete alive in wet, buried and chemically loaded environments. What sets this grade apart is the “DCT” in its name: the coal tar is dehydrated and processed before formulation, so the water that normally sits inside raw coal tar is driven off. That single step changes how the coating behaves on site. The film flows out smoother, the tendency to blister and pinhole drops, and you get a more uniform anti-corrosive barrier than you would from an untreated coal tar. It is solvent-free and carries zero VOC during and after application, which matters on confined or occupied sites where solvent fumes are a genuine problem.
For the specifier, ShaliDCT 101 is a straightforward, economical barrier coat rather than a high-tech engineered system. It earns its place where you need reliable, long-service corrosion protection on surfaces that will spend their life against soil, water or mild chemical attack, and where a clean finish and low odour are worth having. Because it is a proven STP product with a published TDS and MSDS, it slots easily into tender specifications. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised STP distributor and can also apply it, so the same team that quotes the material can stand behind the surface preparation and film build that decide whether a coal tar coating actually lasts.
The technical insight
Corrosion on steel and reinforced concrete is an electrochemical process: it needs moisture and oxygen reaching the metal to keep the reaction going. A coal tar coating works by physically shutting that pathway. Coal tar pitch is naturally hydrophobic and chemically inert, so a continuous film of it forms a dense, water-repelling membrane that oxygen and dissolved ions struggle to cross. The catch with ordinary coal tar is the water trapped inside it – as the film cures and the coating warms in service, that moisture wants to escape, and it lifts the film into blisters and leaves weak spots. Dehydrating the tar before it is formulated removes most of that internal water, so ShaliDCT 101 cures into a tighter, more coherent film with fewer defects for corrosion to exploit. The result is the same fundamental barrier chemistry that has protected buried pipelines for generations, but delivered with a cleaner finish and a more dependable film – which is exactly why it is positioned for jobs “where a better surface finish is desired.”
Where it is used
- External protective coating for buried and above-ground steel pipelines
- Anti-corrosive coating on structural and fabricated steelwork
- Protection of steel tank exteriors and equipment bodies against moisture
- Barrier coating on below-grade and water-retaining concrete surfaces
- Coating of steel embedded in or in contact with damp soil
- Corrosion protection in mildly aggressive industrial and effluent environments
- Protection of concrete surfaces exposed to ground water and dampness
- General anti-corrosive duty where a smooth, low-odour coal tar finish is preferred
Key advantages
- Solvent-free formulation with zero VOC during and after application
- Dehydrated coal tar gives a noticeably smoother, more uniform finish
- Markedly reduced blistering compared with untreated coal tar
- Dense, hydrophobic film that blocks moisture and oxygen from the substrate
- Protects both steel and concrete, simplifying mixed-substrate jobs
- Low odour suits confined, occupied or poorly ventilated locations
- Economical barrier protection with a long service track record in India
- Backed by a published STP TDS and MSDS for easy specification
Limitations & considerations
- Coal tar chemistry is dark-coloured and cannot be tinted or used decoratively
- Not a topcoat for UV-exposed surfaces without a suitable overcoat, as coal tar can chalk and degrade in sunlight
- Performance depends heavily on thorough surface preparation – it will not bridge rust, scale or loose material
- Handling requires PPE and care, as coal tar products carry health and environmental cautions (refer to MSDS)
- Not intended for strong chemical immersion duty where an epoxy coal tar or engineered lining is required
- Adhesion and cure need a clean, dry substrate – it is unsuitable over damp or contaminated surfaces
Selection & best practice
The coating only performs as well as the surface under it. On steel, blast or mechanically clean to remove all rust, mill scale and old coating, then coat while the surface is still clean and dry – do not let flash rust form. On concrete, make sure the surface is sound, dry and free of laitance, dust and curing-compound residue. Apply ShaliDCT 101 in thin, even coats by brush, roller or spray, working the material well into the surface on the first coat, and always let each coat cure before applying the next so solvent-free films build without trapping. Aim for continuous, pinhole-free coverage over the whole area – corrosion starts at the gaps. Confirm the specified number of coats and total film thickness with the current STP TDS for your project, keep application off damp or rain-threatened surfaces, and use gloves, goggles and respiratory protection as set out in the MSDS. For UV-exposed steelwork, plan a compatible overcoat rather than leaving bare coal tar in sunlight.

How we position STP ShaliDCT 101
ShaliDCT 101 is the smoother-finish, general-duty grade in STP’s ShaliDCT dehydrated coal tar range. Where a job needs a different balance of properties, its stablemates are the natural next step – ShaliDCT 102 and 102A for other anti-corrosive solvent-free coal tar duties, and ShaliDCT 105 where a PU-compatible saturated tar with combined anti-corrosive and waterproofing behaviour is called for. For heavier chemical immersion or effluent exposure that outruns a plain coal tar barrier, step up to an epoxy coal tar system such as STP’s ShaliPoxy CTE range or Fosroc’s Nitocote ET402. Across our other brands, Dr. Fixit and Fosroc offer engineered protective coatings and rebar treatments where a fully warranted system is specified. Space Arc supplies and applies all of these, so we can match the coating to the exposure rather than pushing a single product.
Fosroc Nitocote ET402 — Choose the Fosroc option when the exposure is severe chemical or effluent immersion that outruns a plain coal tar barrier – ET402 is a solvent-free coal-tar-modified epoxy engineered for that duty.
