What is it?

An acrylic polymerised, water-based architectural primer from STP Limited, formulated as a white base coat under emulsion and acrylic wall finishes.

Where is it used?

Interior and exterior walls, RCC surfaces, cement plaster, brick and block masonry, drywall and gypsum board, before decorative or protective topcoats.

Why use it?

It builds a uniform, well-bonded foundation, resists the high alkalinity of new concrete, seals porosity and cuts down topcoat absorption for an even finish.

How is it applied?

Diluted roughly 1:0.5 with potable water, then brushed, rolled or sprayed onto a clean, sound, dry surface and left about 2 hours before overcoating.

About STP ShaliPrime WB

STP ShaliPrime WB is the workhorse primer that sits between the substrate and the finish on a painting job. It is an acrylic polymerised, water-based product designed to grip firmly on concrete and masonry while giving the topcoat a consistent surface to sit on. Because it carries the paint system rather than decorating on its own, its job is quiet but decisive: a wall primed properly holds its colour longer, flashes less and is far less likely to peel or blister down the line. For engineers and contractors working on new construction, the alkali resistance is the headline feature, since fresh cement and plaster stay chemically aggressive for weeks and can chew through an unprepared paint film.

Being water-based, the primer suits Indian site conditions where low odour, easy water clean-up and quick recoating matter on occupied or fast-track projects. It goes on white, dries to a thin, even film of around 30 microns and is ready for the next coat in roughly two hours under normal ambient conditions. Space Arc Engineering supplies ShaliPrime WB as an authorised STP distributor across Delhi NCR and pan-India, so specifiers get genuine material backed by the manufacturer’s data sheet rather than a look-alike substitute.

The technical insight

The performance comes down to the acrylic polymer binder and how it behaves once it hits a porous, alkaline surface. Cementitious substrates release calcium hydroxide and sit at a high pH, especially when green; ordinary oil-based or unmodified films saponify and lose adhesion under that attack. The acrylic system in ShaliPrime WB is chosen for its stability against alkali, so the film stays intact instead of breaking down at the interface. At the same time, the primer penetrates and partially seals the open pores of concrete and plaster. That does two useful things: it anchors the film mechanically into the surface, and it evens out suction so the emulsion topcoat is not drunk unevenly into dense and porous patches. The result is a more uniform sheen, truer colour and better hiding from the finish coat, using less topcoat to get there. With a solid content of around 56-58% and a specific gravity near 1.37, it lays down enough binder in a single thin coat to do this without loading the wall.

Where it is used

  • Priming interior walls before emulsion or acrylic decorative paint
  • Priming exterior facades ahead of architectural and weatherproof coatings
  • Sealing new RCC, cement plaster and rendered surfaces once cured
  • Priming brick, concrete block and stone masonry
  • Preparing drywall, gypsum board and POP surfaces for painting
  • Base coating repaired or patched plaster to even out surface suction
  • Priming previously painted, cleaned surfaces before repainting
  • Establishing a bonded base for water-based protective wall systems

Key advantages

  • Good alkali resistance suited to new, high-pH concrete and plaster
  • Strong acrylic adhesion that anchors the paint system to the substrate
  • Water-based, so low odour, low VOC and easy water clean-up
  • Fast recoat, typically ready for the topcoat in about 2 hours
  • Seals porosity and reduces uneven topcoat absorption
  • Improves finish uniformity, colour trueness and hiding of the paint
  • Economical coverage of roughly 8-10 m2 per litre when diluted
  • Works under a wide range of water-based architectural finishes

Limitations & considerations

  • It is a decorative wall primer, not a waterproofing membrane or crack bridger
  • Designed for water-based topcoats; confirm compatibility before overcoating with solvent systems
  • Substrate must be cured, clean, sound and dry; it cannot fix loose or friable surfaces
  • Not a substitute for an epoxy or PU primer under industrial floor coatings
  • Cannot cure active water ingress or rising damp on its own
  • Application in high humidity or low temperature will slow drying and recoat times

Selection & best practice

Start with surface preparation, which decides the outcome more than the primer itself. Let new concrete and plaster cure fully, then remove dust, laitance, oil, old flaking paint and any efflorescence so you are priming a clean, sound, dry base. Dilute ShaliPrime WB about 1 part primer to 0.5 parts clean potable water, mix well and apply one even coat by brush, roller or spray, working it into the surface rather than flooding it. Keep the film thin and continuous, aiming for the target dry film thickness of around 30 microns, and avoid over-application that can skin and trap moisture. Allow roughly two hours of drying under normal conditions before the topcoat, extending that time in cold or humid weather. On very porous or patchy walls a light second primer coat helps even out suction. Overcoat with a compatible water-based emulsion or architectural finish, and always confirm the specific topcoat system on the STP data sheet for the project.

Industry use cases

Residential and commercial buildings

Priming internal and external walls of apartments, offices and retail spaces before emulsion or acrylic decorative paint for a durable, even finish.

New construction

Sealing freshly cured RCC, plaster and blockwork where high surface alkalinity would otherwise attack an unprimed paint film.

Repair and repainting

Evening out suction over patched plaster and cleaned old paintwork so the fresh topcoat lays down uniformly without flashing.

Institutional and hospitality projects

Fast-track priming on schools, hospitals and hotels where low odour and quick two-hour recoat keep occupied areas workable.

Facade and weather-exposed masonry

Establishing a bonded base on exterior masonry ahead of architectural and weatherproof water-based coating systems.

Frequently asked questions

What surfaces can ShaliPrime WB be used on?
It is made for concrete, cement plaster, brick and block masonry, drywall, gypsum and POP surfaces that are cured, clean, sound and dry. It is a wall primer, not a floor or structural product.
How much do I need per square metre?
Theoretical coverage is about 8-10 m2 per litre when diluted 1:0.5 with potable water. Rough, porous or heavily textured walls consume more, so plan a practical allowance above the theoretical figure.
How long before I can apply the topcoat?
Under normal ambient conditions the primer is ready for overcoating in roughly two hours. Cold or humid weather extends this, so let the film dry fully before painting.
Does it make a wall waterproof?
No. ShaliPrime WB is an adhesion and sealing primer for the paint system, not a waterproofing membrane. For water ingress you need a dedicated STP waterproofing coating or membrane, applied as a separate system.
Why prime new concrete at all instead of painting directly?
New concrete and plaster are highly alkaline and porous. The alkali-resistant acrylic primer stops the fresh surface from attacking the paint and evens out suction, which protects adhesion and gives truer colour and better coverage.
Is the material genuine STP, and where can I buy it in India?
Yes. Space Arc Engineering is an authorised STP distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and pan-India, so you receive genuine ShaliPrime WB backed by the manufacturer’s data sheet and application support.

How we position STP ShaliPrime WB

ShaliPrime WB is the go-to primer when the finish is a water-based decorative or architectural paint on walls and masonry. Match the primer to the topcoat system, not the other way round. If the job is an epoxy floor coating rather than wall paint, move to STP ShaliPrime 2E, the two-component epoxy primer built for concrete and metal under industrial flooring. Where you are bedding polysulphide or polyurethane sealants, ShaliPrime S is the correct adhesion primer, and for deeply penetrating consolidation of weak or dusty substrates STP ShaliPrime PUM, the low-viscosity PU penetrating primer, is the better fit. On planter and landscaped waterproofing, ShaliPrime WP WB adds anti-root protection that the standard WB grade does not. Across our other brands, Space Arc also supplies water-based wall primers such as Asian Paints SmartCare and Dr. Fixit systems, so if a project is specified around a particular paint or waterproofing house we can align the primer to that ecosystem. Talk to our team with the topcoat, substrate and exposure and we will confirm the right primer for the specification.
