About STP ShaliProtek 2E 150

ShaliProtek 2E 150 is STP’s workhorse anti-corrosive epoxy for structures that live in hostile conditions. It is a two-pack system: a pigmented epoxy base (Component A) and a polyamide hardener (Component B) that are combined at a 3:1 volume ratio on site and cure at ambient temperature. Because the binder is a high-molecular-weight epoxy cured with polyamide rather than a rigid amine, the dried film keeps a degree of flexibility, which matters on steelwork and concrete that flex, expand and take impact in service. It bonds directly to a properly prepared metal surface or over a recommended primer, and doubles as a durable, abrasion-resistant coat in its own right.

In practice this is the coat that asset owners in Delhi NCR and across India reach for when a structure is in continuous contact with water or a corrosive medium and repainting is expensive to schedule. Space Arc supplies the genuine STP material and, as an applicator, handles surface preparation, priming and spray application so the achieved dry film thickness and adhesion match the data sheet rather than falling short on site. It is equally at home lining a water pipeline, protecting a barrage gate, or coating the concrete and steel inside a sewage treatment plant.

The technical insight

Corrosion protection from a coating comes down to two things: keeping water and ions away from the substrate, and staying intact while the structure moves. ShaliProtek 2E 150 addresses both through its polyamide-cured high-molecular-weight epoxy network. The epoxy backbone gives a dense, chemically resistant film with low water absorption (under 0.6 percent), so the electrolyte that drives rusting struggles to reach the steel. Curing with a polyamide hardener, rather than a brittle amine adduct, leaves the film tougher and more flexible – it reaches roughly Shore D 60 hardness yet tolerates impact, thermal shock and the flexing of the underlying member without cracking. At around 76 percent volume solids it builds a genuine 100-150 micron dry film in a single application, and the pigmentation and cross-link density together let it pass 300 hours of salt-spray testing at 200 micron DFT. The trade-off inherent to all epoxies is UV sensitivity, which is why STP positions it as an intermediate or topcoat in sheltered service and pairs it with a polyurethane finish where sunlight is a factor.

Where it is used

  • Anti-corrosive coating for metal and steel structures in industrial plants
  • Internal lining of water pipelines and steel penstocks
  • Protection of dams, barrage gates and sheet or pipe piling
  • Coating of crude-oil and effluent storage tanks
  • Steel and concrete surfaces inside sewage and effluent treatment plants
  • Chemical plant structures exposed to acids, alkalis and solvents
  • Foundation walls, sumps and underground structures
  • Abrasion-resistant intermediate coat over zinc-rich or epoxy primer

Key advantages

  • Flexible film that resists cracking even where the structure stays in continuous contact with water
  • Strong chemical resistance to sea and salt water, oils, acids, alkalis, crude oil and minerals
  • High build – reaches 100-150 micron DFT per application, cutting coats and labour
  • Low water absorption (under 0.6 percent) for durable barrier protection
  • USFDA 175.300 clearance for contact with potable water
  • Excellent impact, thermal-shock and abrasion resistance (Shore D 60 hardness)
  • Bonds directly to prepared steel or over primer, and works on concrete and timber too
  • Passes 300-hour salt-spray at 200 micron DFT for proven corrosion performance

Limitations & considerations

  • Like all epoxies it chalks on prolonged sunlight exposure, so it needs a PU topcoat for permanent UV service
  • Application is limited to substrate and ambient temperatures between +10C and +40C
  • Substrate moisture must stay below 5 percent, and new concrete must be at least 28 days old
  • Short pot life of 1-2 hours after mixing demands disciplined batching on site
  • Cold, humid, rainy or ponding conditions during cure can leave the film incompletely cured
  • Thinner addition to ease application reduces sag resistance, volume solids and final DFT

Selection & best practice

Success starts with surface preparation. Steel should be cleaned to a NACE or SSPC standard and freed of dust, flakes, oil and grease; concrete must be at least 28 days old and below 5 percent moisture. Prime first – STP recommends ShaliPrime Zn Ph 60 on metal and ShaliPrime 2E on concrete – and let the primer surface-dry. Mix Component A and B at 3:1 by volume with a slow-speed paddle (400-500 rpm) for 3-5 minutes until the colour is uniform, keeping the paddle submerged to avoid entrapping air; never mix by hand and never split packs. Apply as supplied without thinning. Because pot life is only 1-2 hours, mix only what the crew can lay in that window. Overcoat the first coat after 10-15 hours at 30C; if more than 16 hours pass, wipe with a suitable solvent before the next coat. For airless spray use a 60:1 or higher pump, a 23-thou tip and 2200-2400 psi. Clean tools immediately with STP Thinner before the material hardens.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is ShaliProtek 2E 150 made of?
It is a two-component epoxy coating – a high-molecular-weight epoxy base cured with a polyamide hardener. You mix Component A and B at 3 parts to 1 by volume and it cures at ambient temperature to a grey, hard yet flexible film.
How much area does one pack cover?
Theoretical coverage is 5-8 m2 per litre to reach a 100-150 micron dry film. A standard 20 L pack (15 L base plus 5 L hardener) therefore covers roughly 100-160 m2 per coat before wastage, surface profile and site losses are deducted.
Can it be used inside potable-water tanks and pipelines?
Yes. It carries USFDA 175.300 clearance for contact with potable water, which is why it is specified for internal linings of water pipelines and reservoirs. Confirm the exact service and any local approvals with us before specifying.
Does it need a primer?
For best results, yes. STP recommends ShaliPrime Zn Ph 60 over metal and ShaliPrime 2E over concrete. It can be applied directly to well-prepared steel, but a primer improves adhesion and long-term corrosion protection.
Can it be exposed to direct sunlight?
Not as a permanent finish. Like all epoxies it chalks under prolonged UV, which is cosmetic rather than structural. For sun-exposed surfaces, overcoat it with an aliphatic polyurethane topcoat and use the 2E 150 as the intermediate build coat.
How long is the pot life and overcoat window?
Pot life is about 1-2 hours for 100 g of mix at 27C, so mix only what you can apply in that time. The second coat should follow 10-15 hours after the first at 30C; if more than 16 hours pass, wipe with solvent before recoating.

How we position STP ShaliProtek 2E 150

Within the STP range, ShaliProtek 2E 150 sits alongside its siblings – the flexible polyamide ShaliProtek 2E PA 80 and PA 120 for heavier-duty immersion, the ShaliProtek 2E MIO 40/60 micaceous iron oxide intermediates, and the moisture-insensitive 2E 65/80 MI phenolics for damp substrates. Pair it with ShaliPrime Zn Ph 60 on steel or ShaliPrime 2E on concrete, and finish with an STP aliphatic PU topcoat for UV-exposed work. Where a client’s specification calls for a Fosroc system instead, Space Arc supplies genuine Fosroc protective coatings too – Nitocote EP405 for potable-water and food-contact linings, or Nitocote EN901 novolac for extreme chemical immersion. We stock and apply both brand families across Delhi NCR and pan-India, so the choice can follow the specification rather than the shelf.
