What is it?

A single-component, solvent-borne PMMA co-polymer lacquer that dries to a clear, glossy, water-repellent film on mineral and metal surfaces.

Where is it used?

Stone facades and cladding, exposed architectural concrete, terracotta and tile work, and ornamental metal exposed to weather.

Why use it?

It locks out water, salt and mild chemicals while staying fully transparent, so the substrate keeps its natural colour, grain and texture.

How is it applied?

Stirred and laid down in a single uniform coat by brush, roller or spray on a clean, completely dry surface; touch dry in about 10 minutes.

About STP ShaliLacquer

ShaliLacquer is STP Limited’s clear protective lacquer, built on a PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) co-polymer carried in a fast-evaporating solvent. Applied as a single thin coat, it dries within about ten minutes to a transparent, glossy film that repels water, resists salt and mild chemical attack, and holds up under strong sunlight — exactly what exposed stone, concrete, tile and metal surfaces face through an Indian summer and monsoon. Because the film is clear, the surface keeps its natural character; the coating protects without repainting.

Space Arc Engineering supplies ShaliLacquer in 20-litre packs across Delhi NCR and pan-India, with application support where needed. It answers a common site problem: a stone facade or fair-faced concrete element that darkens with absorbed rainwater, stains from pollution or throws salt bloom, where the client wants protection but refuses to lose the as-built look. One stirred coat by brush, roller or spray, and the surface sheds water instead of drinking it.

The technical insight

PMMA is among the most UV-stable resins in coatings chemistry — the same polymer family as acrylic glazing that stays clear outdoors for years. In ShaliLacquer, the co-polymer is dissolved at 10 ± 2% solids in a solvent that flashes off within minutes, leaving a thin, continuous film that closes the surface pores. Rain, dissolved chlorides and airborne salts are stopped at the film instead of being pulled into the substrate by capillary suction, which is what causes darkening, staining and efflorescence on unsealed masonry. Because the acrylic backbone absorbs very little UV, the film resists the chalking and yellowing that quickly degrade cheaper aromatic clear coats. The low solids content is a deliberate trade-off: a thin film follows the surface profile closely for even gloss and economical coverage of 8–10 m²/L, but it remains a surface film — protection lasts as long as the film does, and renewal is a quick single-coat job.

Where it is used

  • Clear protection of natural stone facades and cladding — sandstone, granite, slate — against rain absorption and staining
  • Sealing exposed architectural and fair-faced concrete walls against water and dust pickup
  • Glossy protective coat on precast elements, jaalis, planters and decorative concrete features
  • Protection of terracotta, clay and concrete tiles on walls and roofs
  • Anti-stain sealing of natural stone in low-traffic decorative floor areas
  • Clear weather-resistant finish on ornamental metalwork, sculptures, gates and railings
  • Salt and atmospheric protection for parapets and masonry in coastal or industrial environments

Key advantages

  • Touch dry within about 10 minutes, so surfaces return to service quickly with minimal dust pickup during drying
  • Strong water repellency — rain sheets off instead of soaking into porous stone and concrete
  • Resists salts and mild chemicals, limiting efflorescence and atmospheric staining
  • Very good adhesion to stone, concrete, tile and metal from one product
  • Fully transparent gloss finish keeps the substrate’s natural colour and grain visible
  • Single-coat application by brush, roller or spray keeps labour time and cost low
  • Economical theoretical coverage of 8–10 m² per litre
  • Genuine UV resistance from PMMA chemistry — the film does not rapidly yellow or chalk outdoors

Limitations & considerations

  • It is a film-forming lacquer, not a penetrating impregnation — protection lasts only as long as the surface film, and scratching or abrasion exposes the substrate
  • The glossy finish changes surface sheen: matte stone will read slightly ‘wet’, so approve a sample panel with the architect before full application
  • Low solids (10 ± 2%) give a thin film — it is not an abrasion-resistant coating for trafficked floors or industrial wear
  • Solvent-borne and flammable (flash point above 30 °C): needs ventilation, no hot work nearby, and care when used indoors
  • The substrate must be completely dry — moisture trapped under the film shows up as clouding and can break adhesion
  • Not to be applied when ambient temperature exceeds 50 °C, as over-fast solvent flash-off spoils film formation

Selection & best practice

Get the surface genuinely clean and genuinely dry: blow off dust and loose particles with a jet of dry air and remove all oil and grease — any dampness left in the substrate will appear later as clouding under the clear film. Stir the lacquer to full homogeneity, then lay down one uniform coat by brush, roller or spray without over-working it; the solvent flashes quickly, so coat in manageable panels and keep a wet edge. Do not apply above 50 °C ambient or onto sun-baked surfaces. Clean tools immediately with STP Thinner only — hardened lacquer will not come off equipment. On any visible facade, coat a trial patch and have the gloss level approved before committing to the full area, and always work with gloves, eye protection and good ventilation.

Industry use cases

Commercial Facades

Stone-clad office and retail frontages in NCR take dust, monsoon rain and pollution; a clear coat keeps sandstone and granite panels from darkening and staining between cleans.

Architectural & Precast Concrete

Exposed concrete fins, jaalis and precast features hold their as-cast look because rainwater and airborne salts stop at the film instead of soaking in.

Institutional Masonry

Boundary walls, murals and sandstone features at campuses and public buildings get anti-stain protection with no colour change to the original work.

Roofing & Tile Work

Terracotta and clay tiles stay water-repellent and easier to clean, with the fired-clay colour lightly enhanced by the gloss.

Ornamental Metal

Sculptures, gates and railings get a clear weather barrier that shows off the metal instead of hiding it under paint.

Frequently asked questions

Will ShaliLacquer change the appearance of my stone or concrete?
It stays transparent, so colour and grain remain visible, but it dries glossy and can slightly deepen the tone — a lightly ‘wetted’ look. Approve a sample panel before coating a full facade.
What is the coverage, and how much area does one pack do?
Theoretical coverage is 8–10 m² per litre in a single coat, so a 20 L pack covers roughly 160–200 m². Porous, rough surfaces absorb more, so budget towards the lower figure on sandstone and open-textured concrete.
How is this different from a silane-siloxane water repellent?
ShaliLacquer forms a visible glossy film on the surface; silane-siloxane products penetrate the pores and leave no film. Choose the lacquer for gloss, stain resistance and a wipeable surface; choose an impregnation when the finish must stay completely unchanged and breathable.
How quickly does it dry, and when can it take rain?
Touch dry is within about 10 minutes at 27 °C. Do not apply if rain is imminent — the substrate must be dry going in — and as good practice give the film a few hours before washdown or heavy wetting.
Can I spray it, and what do I clean equipment with?
Yes — brush, roller and spray all work. Clean tools immediately after use with STP Thinner only; once the lacquer hardens on equipment it will not come off.
Is it suitable for floors?
Only decorative, low-traffic stone areas. At 10 ± 2% solids the film is thin and will wear under regular foot or vehicle traffic. Use a purpose-made floor coating for trafficked areas and keep ShaliLacquer for walls, facades and features.

How we position STP ShaliLacquer

ShaliLacquer is the clear, film-forming option in STP Limited’s surface-protection range: fast, economical, single-coat protection where the client wants gloss and stain resistance without losing the natural finish. Keep STP Thinner on hand for tool cleaning, and where the project needs a pigmented waterproof coating rather than a clear seal, look at STP’s ShaliCryl acrylic coating range. From our Fosroc line, Nitocote SN502 is the penetrating silane-siloxane alternative when the specification calls for invisible, breathable protection with no surface film, while Dekguard S covers pigmented anti-carbonation protection for reinforced concrete. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies all of these across Delhi NCR and pan-India, and can help match the chemistry to the exposure.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Nitocote SN502 — Specifiers choose Nitocote SN502 when the protection must be invisible and breathable — it impregnates the pore structure instead of forming a gloss film, so it cannot peel and leaves the surface appearance untouched.
