STP ShaliProtek 2AC PU TC
A tough, glossy PU topcoat that keeps steel and concrete looking new long after the sun, salt and plant chemicals have had their say.
What is it?
A two-component, isocyanate-cured aliphatic acrylic polyurethane topcoat that cures into a hard, flexible, high-gloss finish resistant to UV, abrasion and mild chemical attack.
Where is it used?
Exterior structural steel and concrete in coastal plants, refineries, power stations, cement and steel mills, marine structures, and rail or chemical-wagon exteriors — anywhere sun and industrial exposure wear coatings down fast.
Why use it?
Standard enamel and even many PU finishes chalk, yellow or lose gloss within a couple of Indian summers. The aliphatic backbone in this one is chosen specifically so it doesn’t.
How is it applied?
Mixed 9:1 by volume from factory pre-weighed packs, then brushed, rolled or sprayed over a primed, properly prepared substrate as the final coat of a protective system.
About STP ShaliProtek 2AC PU TC
Most site engineers have watched a freshly painted steel structure turn dull and chalky within a year of monsoon and sun. That’s usually an aromatic polyurethane or an ordinary enamel doing exactly what its chemistry allows — UV light breaks down its molecular backbone and the colour goes with it. ShaliProtek 2AC PU TC is STP Limited’s answer to that problem: a two-component, isocyanate-cured aliphatic acrylic polyurethane topcoat built to sit on the outside of a coating system and take the weather so the layers underneath don’t have to. STP has been making construction chemicals in India long enough to put ’85 years of trust’ on its own literature, and this topcoat reads like a product refined over that time rather than a lab exercise — it cures to a tough, flexible film that stays glossy and holds colour, and it comes both clear and pigmented depending on whether the job calls for a protective clear coat or a full colour finish.
It isn’t meant to work alone, and STP is upfront about that in its own documentation. On concrete it’s specified over a primer such as ShaliPrime PUM; on metal it can follow a primer like ShaliPrime 2E, or in some cases go direct onto correctly blasted steel where the specification allows it. Think of it as the last, most exposed layer in a protective coating build-up, or as the UV-protective cap sitting over an epoxy or waterproofing coating that would otherwise degrade the moment it sees daylight. That’s where it earns its keep — refineries, offshore platforms, cement plants, port structures, rail wagons — anywhere a coating has to survive direct sun and an aggressive atmosphere for years, not months, and where scaffolding and shutdown time make a premature recoat an expensive mistake.
The technical insight
The word that matters here is aliphatic. Most tough, cheap polyurethanes are built on aromatic isocyanates, which cross-link fast and cure hard but contain ring structures that UV light attacks, breaking bonds and yellowing the film from day one outdoors. Aliphatic isocyanates don’t have that weak point, so the cured polymer holds its gloss and colour far longer — STP’s own accelerated weathering data shows under 25% gloss loss and under 2 ΔE colour change after 1000+ hours of exposure, figures most ordinary exterior enamels can’t get close to. The trade-off is a slower, more controlled cure: components mixed 9:1 need 4-5 hours of pot life, reach touch-dry in 1-2 hours, and only hit full cure at 7 days, by which point the film has settled into 57±2% volume solids locked in as a dense, cross-linked barrier with genuine impact and abrasion resistance rather than just surface hardness. In practice that means the coating rewards patience — pushing the recoat window or putting the structure back into service before hard-dry undermines the very durability you paid the aliphatic premium for.
Where it is used
- Exterior finish coat for structural steel in coastal and chemically aggressive environments
- Topcoat over anti-corrosive systems on power, oil and gas plant structures and offshore installations
- Petrochemical, pharmaceutical and chemical plant steelwork and equipment
- Cement and steel plant structures exposed to dust, heat and chemical fallout
- Marine structures and port infrastructure
- Rail coach and chemical wagon exteriors
- Protective UV topcoat over epoxy or waterproofing membrane systems
- General industrial steel and concrete needing a hard, glossy, weather-stable finish
Key advantages
- Aliphatic PU chemistry resists UV and weathering with minimal yellowing or gloss loss over years of outdoor exposure
- High impact resistance (150 kg-inch) and abrasion resistance suit exposed, high-traffic and industrial settings
- Holds up to industrial corrosive atmospheres — chemical splash, fumes and mild acid or alkali exposure
- Strong pull-off adhesion (1.5-2 MPa, failing in the concrete rather than the coating) with enough flexibility to move with the substrate instead of cracking
- Can be applied directly to properly blasted metal where the specification allows, simplifying the coating schedule
- Available in gloss transparent and pigmented options for either a clear protective coat or a full colour finish
- 4-5 hour pot life gives applicators real working time without rushing the mix
- Occasional dry-heat resistance up to 120°C for plant areas that see periodic high temperatures
Limitations & considerations
- It’s a topcoat, not a standalone protective system — needs the correct primer (ShaliPrime PUM on concrete, ShaliPrime 2E on metal) beneath it for full performance
- Contains isocyanate, so applicators need proper PPE — goggles, gloves, dust mask — and good ventilation on site
- Hard dry takes 70-75 hours and full cure 7 days, so early trafficking, rain or water contact before that can spoil the finish
- Application is weather-sensitive — low temperature, high humidity, rain or water ponding during or after coating can cause blistering or incomplete cure
- Concrete must be cured at least 28 days before coating, which needs to be built into the project schedule
- Solvent-borne and flammable, so storage and site handling call for standard fire precautions
Selection & best practice
Surface preparation decides most of the outcome here. On concrete, grind mechanically, strip old paint with a surface grinder, and clear dust, oil and grease by sandblasting, wire brush or compressed air — and don’t coat concrete younger than 28 days. On steel, remove mill scale, oil and grease with wire brush and solvent, then abrasive-blast to Sa 2 or Sa 2.5 depending on how aggressive the service environment is. Prime before topcoating: ShaliPrime PUM on concrete, ShaliPrime 2E on metal (optional but recommended), and let the primer touch-dry for 6-8 hours before proceeding. Mix Component A on a slow-speed drill (300-400 rpm) with a spiral blade until uniform, then add the full, factory pre-weighed Component B and stir again — the 9:1 ratio is fixed, so never eyeball it or split a pack. Let the mixed material stand 5 minutes to release entrapped air before application. Apply by brush, roller or airless/conventional spray, thinning 2-5% for brush/roller, 5-15% for conventional spray, or 1-2% max for airless spray, aiming for a minimum 50-micron DFT and keeping substrate and ambient temperature between +10°C and +40°C with substrate moisture under 2%. Check wet and dry film thickness with a gauge rather than by eye — the theoretical 9-11 m²/L coverage assumes a smooth, non-porous surface, and real steel or shuttered concrete rarely is. Budget for multiple coats where a higher DFT is specified, avoid coating in the hours before rain or in high humidity, and clean tools immediately with STP thinner before the material sets — once it hardens in a brush or spray gun, it’s not coming out.

How we position STP ShaliProtek 2AC PU TC
ShaliProtek 2AC PU TC is one piece of a system, not a one-product fix — pair it with ShaliPrime PUM on concrete or ShaliPrime 2E on metal, and buy them together rather than mixing an unrelated primer under it, since STP’s own performance data is generated against that combination. For factory floors rather than exterior steel, STP’s own ShaliFloor 2AC PU TC covers the flooring version of the same aliphatic PU chemistry. Where the job is protecting exposed liquid-applied waterproofing membranes on roofs and terraces rather than structural steel or marine assets, Fosroc’s Nitoproof UVR Topcoat is the closer fit from Space Arc’s other major brand line — same broad idea of a UV-stable PU topcoat, but built for a different substrate and use case, so the choice comes down to what’s underneath it. Either way, buying the primer, topcoat and technical backup from one supplier through Space Arc keeps the warranty and application advice consistent, which matters more on a coating system than on almost any other product category.
Fosroc Fosroc Nitoproof UVR Topcoat — Not a direct swap — Nitoproof UVR Topcoat is built as the protective finish coat over Fosroc’s liquid-applied waterproofing membranes on terraces and roofs, while ShaliProtek 2AC PU TC is aimed at structural steel and concrete in industrial, marine and coastal settings. Both are UV-resistant, colour-stable PU topcoats, so which one applies depends on what’s underneath — a waterproofing membrane or a primed structural substrate.
