Sika SikaRapid-1
Chloride-free liquid hardening accelerator that pushes concrete to early strength faster, so forms strike sooner and precast beds turn around quicker.
What is it?
A ready-to-use liquid admixture from Sika that speeds up the hardening and early strength gain of concrete and mortar, without any chloride content that could corrode reinforcement.
Where is it used?
Precast yards, cold-weather pours, fast-track slabs, columns and beams, shotcrete and repair concrete that has to carry load within hours rather than days.
Why use it?
It lets contractors strip formwork earlier, cycle precast moulds faster and keep concreting through low temperatures, cutting the idle time that normally slows a programme.
How is it applied?
Dosed at 0.5 to 2.0 percent by weight of cement, added to the mixing water or during batching and mixed thoroughly; trial mixes fix the exact rate for the cement and target.
About Sika SikaRapid-1
SikaRapid-1 is Sika’s liquid hardening accelerator, formulated to give concrete a genuine head start on strength. On any site where the clock matters, curing time is dead time: formwork stays up, precast moulds stay occupied and follow-on trades wait. This admixture attacks that bottleneck by driving the early hydration of cement harder, so a mix reaches strippable and load-bearing strength in a fraction of the usual window while still developing its full strength over time. Importantly, it is completely free of chlorides and any other ingredient that promotes corrosion of steel, which is why it is trusted in reinforced and prestressed elements where an old-fashioned calcium-chloride accelerator would be unacceptable.
For Indian contractors and precasters, the appeal is practical rather than exotic. SikaRapid-1 works with ordinary Portland cement and the blended cements common on site, disperses cleanly through the mixing water and can be introduced through automatic dosing at a batching plant or added manually for smaller pours. Because it accelerates hardening chemistry rather than merely flash-setting the mix, it does not force you to work at unmanageable speed at the mixer, and the concrete keeps its expected long-term strength when the dosage is kept within the recommended band. It is the admixture reached for when winter mornings, tight precast cycles or a fast-track pour would otherwise stall a programme.
The technical insight
The mechanism is one of accelerated hydration, not false set. SikaRapid-1 is a balanced mixture of organic and inorganic complex agents that catalyse the early reaction of cement with water, so the calcium-silicate-hydrate gel that gives concrete its strength forms faster and denser in the first hours. That is what shows up on site as significantly higher one- to twenty-four-hour strengths compared with an untreated control at the same mix design. Because the acceleration is chemical rather than thermal, it remains effective in the cold, where hydration would otherwise crawl and freezing becomes a real risk. And because there is no chloride in the formulation, none of that early strength comes at the cost of passivating steel: the reinforcement stays protected, which is the whole reason a chloride-free accelerator exists. Keeping the dose within 0.5 to 2.0 percent by weight of cement is what preserves the balance between rapid early gain and normal ultimate strength; push far beyond it and you buy speed you do not need while disturbing the mix.
Where it is used
- Precast concrete production where mould turnaround and demoulding cycles drive output
- Cold-weather and early-morning concreting where low temperatures slow hydration
- Fast-track slabs, floors, columns and beams that must carry load or be stripped early
- Shotcrete and sprayed concrete for tunnel and slope support
- Concrete repairs that need to be reopened to traffic or service quickly
- Slip-form and continuous-pour construction requiring rapid strength behind the form
- In-situ elements where formwork must be struck and reused on a tight rotation
- Mortar and screed work needing accelerated early hardening
Key advantages
- Completely chloride-free, so it carries no reinforcement corrosion risk in RCC or prestressed work
- Delivers markedly higher early strength, freeing formwork and precast moulds sooner
- Keeps concreting viable through cold and low-temperature conditions
- Compatible with ordinary Portland and common blended cements
- Liquid form disperses readily and suits both automatic dosing and manual addition
- Maintains normal long-term strength when kept within the recommended dosage
- Complies with EN 934-2 and conforms to IS 9103 for admixtures
- Reduces programme delay by cutting the idle curing time between pours
Limitations & considerations
- It is an accelerator, not a plasticiser or water-reducer; pair it with a superplasticiser when workability or water reduction is also needed
- Overdosing beyond the recommended band can disturb the mix and is wasteful without adding useful benefit
- Optimum dosage varies with cement type, temperature and target strength, so trial mixes are essential rather than optional
- Accelerated early set shortens working and placing time, which must be planned for in hot conditions or long hauls
- It reduces but does not eliminate the need for cold-weather protection such as insulation against freezing
- Being a set/hardening accelerator, it is not a substitute for proper curing of the finished concrete
Selection & best practice
Fix the dosage by trial mix, not by habit: start within the 0.5 to 2.0 percent by weight of cement range and calibrate against your actual cement, ambient temperature and the strength you need at strike or demoulding. Add SikaRapid-1 to the mixing water or during batching rather than onto dry cement, and mix thoroughly to disperse it evenly through the batch. Where you are dosing 16 fl.oz per 100 lb (about 1040 ml per 100 kg) of cementitious material or higher, adjust the water content to keep the water-cement ratio in check. When you also need workability or water reduction, combine it with a compatible Sika superplasticiser rather than pushing the accelerator dose. In cold conditions, treat the accelerator as one layer of defence and still protect fresh concrete against freezing. Store the drums in cool, dry, shaded conditions, keep them sealed until use, and run a site trial whenever the cement source or mix design changes.

Industry use cases
Precast Concrete
Speeds demoulding so casting beds and moulds turn over more times per day, lifting yard output without extra formwork.
Cold-Weather Construction
Keeps hydration moving through winter mornings and low temperatures where untreated concrete would gain strength dangerously slowly.
Fast-Track Buildings
Lets floor slabs, columns and beams reach strip or load strength early, compressing the floor-to-floor cycle on tight programmes.
Tunnelling & Slope Support
Supports shotcrete and sprayed-concrete linings that must stiffen and gain strength quickly for ground support.
Repair & Reinstatement
Gets patch repairs and reinstated slabs back into service or traffic in hours, minimising disruption on live sites.

How we position Sika SikaRapid-1
SikaRapid-1 sits in the accelerator end of Sika’s admixture range and is the go-to when the priority is early strength and fast demoulding. If your mix also needs high workability or water reduction, pair it with a Sika superplasticiser from the Sika ViscoCrete or Sikament family rather than overdosing the accelerator, and where waterproofing of the concrete matters, look at Sika’s integral waterproofing admixtures. Across our other brands, Fosroc’s Conplast admixture range and MC-Bauchemie’s Muraplast line cover the complementary superplasticising and workability requirements on the same pour. For a like-for-like Sika alternative aimed at precast where an even more aggressive early cycle is needed, SikaRapid-2 is worth evaluating. Talk to Space Arc Engineering and we will match the accelerator, plasticiser and any waterproofing admixture to your cement, programme and site conditions.
