What is it?

A heavy-duty, flow-applied (self-smoothing) epoxy resin floor topping supplied as a four-component, pre-weighed system that cures to a dense, seamless, ~4 mm coloured surface.

Where is it used?

Heavy-traffic industrial floors: dry-food and pharma process areas, factory and warehouse traffic aisles, AGV tracks, and manufacturing plant floors carrying forklift and pallet-truck loads.

Why use it?

It delivers a jointless, impervious, high-strength wearing surface that resists abrasion, impact and a wide range of industrial chemicals, while remaining hygienic and easy to clean.

How is it applied?

Specialist applicators grit-blast/grind the slab, prime with Nitoprime 25, then mix the four packs and flow-apply the topping with a serrated trowel, de-aerating with a spiked roller to the nominal 4 mm thickness.

About Fosroc Nitoflor SL4000

Fosroc Nitoflor SL4000 is a heavy-duty, self-smoothing (flow-applied) epoxy resin floor topping designed for industrial floors that take a genuine beating. It belongs to Fosroc’s Nitoflor SL self-levelling family and sits at the upper end of that range: where Nitoflor SL3000 is typically laid at 3 mm for medium-to-heavy duty, SL4000 is built around a nominal 4 mm wearing layer for environments with higher abrasion, heavier point loads and more frequent hard-wheeled traffic. The product is supplied as a four-component, pre-weighed system: a pigmented epoxy resin base, a hardener, a graded-aggregate pack, and a separate colour pack. Mixing all four on site in the correct ratio is what gives the cured floor its density, strength and uniform colour, which is why Fosroc is explicit that part-mixing the packs is not acceptable. Once blended and poured onto a primed substrate, the material self-levels into a smooth, light-reflective, seamless surface that hardens into a dense, impervious topping. The absence of joints (other than where structural movement joints are carried through) is the practical advantage end-users notice most: there are no grout lines or tile edges to trap dirt, harbour bacteria or break down under cleaning regimes. For Indian specifiers, the SL4000 is a familiar, locally manufactured choice from Fosroc Chemicals (India), and the matching primer Nitoprime 25 and cleaning solvent Nitoflor Sol are part of the same system, so the whole build-up is sourced and supported as one package. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Nitoflor SL4000 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, including substrate assessment, priming and trained flow-application crews.

The technical insight

The performance of SL4000 comes from a high filler-to-resin ratio: graded aggregate carries the load and resists wear, while the epoxy binder locks it into a monolithic, void-free matrix. That is why the published mechanical figures are screed-like rather than coating-like. SL4000 develops a compressive strength above 65 N/mm2, a flexural strength above 27 N/mm2 and tensile strength around 13 N/mm2, with pull-off adhesion to a sound, primed slab in excess of 2.5 N/mm2 (in line with how Fosroc tests the SL range to ASTM C579, BS 6319 and ASTM D4541). Abrasion loss is low (around 0.10 g under a Taber-type test), which is the property that actually governs service life under forklift and trolley traffic. Two engineering points matter most. First, the topping is only ever as good as its bond, so the substrate must be a sound concrete slab — at least 28 days old, moisture content within Fosroc’s limits and relative humidity not exceeding 75% — mechanically prepared (grit-blasting, scabbling or grinding) to remove laitance and contamination, then primed with Nitoprime 25. Second, SL4000 is a chemical product with a finite pot life once the hardener and aggregate are in, so the crew must keep mixing and laying as one continuous operation. The epoxy chemistry also means the floor takes foot traffic and vehicular traffic in stages over roughly 24–48 hours and reaches full chemical resistance after about 7 days, and it must not be laid below about 10 C or above about 45 C ambient.

Where it is used

  • Dry-food processing and packing halls needing a hygienic, dust-free, easy-clean floor
  • Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical manufacturing and clean-process areas
  • Heavy-traffic aisles and gangways in factories and distribution warehouses
  • Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) tracks and defined forklift/pallet-truck routes
  • General manufacturing, assembly and engineering process floors
  • Production zones where seamless, jointless flooring is specified for cleanability
  • Areas exposed to intermittent spillage of a wide range of industrial chemicals
  • Refurbishment of worn concrete floors where a durable new wearing surface is needed

Key advantages

  • Heavy-duty 4 mm wearing layer engineered for high abrasion and impact loads
  • Self-smoothing flow application gives a level, light-reflective, seamless finish
  • Dense and impervious — no joints or grout lines to trap dirt or bacteria, so it is hygienic and easy to clean
  • High mechanical strength (compressive >65 N/mm2, flexural >27 N/mm2) suited to forklift and AGV traffic
  • Good resistance to a wide range of industrial chemicals at ambient temperatures
  • Pre-weighed four-component packs reduce on-site dosing errors and give consistent colour and performance
  • Available in a range of colours to zone areas and improve light levels in the workspace
  • Locally manufactured by Fosroc India with a matched primer (Nitoprime 25) and full technical support
  • Relatively fast staged return to service (foot then vehicular traffic) to limit plant downtime

Limitations & considerations

  • Must be installed by trained specialist applicators following the Fosroc Method Statement — not a DIY or general-trade product
  • Bond depends entirely on substrate quality: not suitable over asphalt, weak or friable concrete, unmodified sand/cement screeds, or PVC tiles/sheet
  • Should not be applied where rising damp, osmosis risk, or relative humidity above 75% exists without a suitable damp-proof membrane
  • Sensitive to ambient temperature — typically not applied below ~10 C or above ~45 C; consult Fosroc for thermal-shock areas
  • Finite pot life once mixed, so application must be continuous; mixing and laying cannot be paused mid-floor
  • As an epoxy, it can show minor long-term shade change under strong UV or adverse exposure (cosmetic, not structural)
  • Not the right choice where heavy thermal cycling, very aggressive chemical immersion, or thermal-shock cleaning is the main load — a PU/cementitious-urethane screed may be more appropriate
  • Spillages should be cleaned up promptly; chemicals left to evaporate can concentrate and attack the surface

Selection & best practice

Specify SL4000 at its nominal 4 mm thickness over a sound, fully cured concrete slab (28+ days, RH below 75%, moisture within Fosroc limits). Mechanically prepare the surface by grit-blasting, scabbling or grinding to remove all laitance and contamination, then prime with Nitoprime 25 — porous slabs may need a second prime coat, and the topping should be applied within the primer’s overcoating window (roughly 6–12 hours depending on temperature) while it is no longer tacky. Plan one pack (15 litres) to cover about 3.75 m2 at 4 mm; allow roughly 10% extra for wastage and surface irregularities, and order Nitoprime 25 at about 5.5–6.5 m2/litre. Mix all four packs in full — colour into base, then hardener, then aggregate — never part-mix, and lay continuously within the pot life using a serrated trowel, de-aerating with a spiked roller. Carry all existing structural movement joints through the new floor. Protect the fresh floor: foot traffic typically after ~24 hours, vehicular after ~48 hours, full chemical resistance after ~7 days. Maintain with regular soft mopping and a water-miscible cleaner; avoid harsh acids, metal-wheeled trolleys and dragged sharp loads.

Re-surfacing worn or dusting industrial slabs with a new high-strength 4 mm epoxy topping rather than demolishing and recasting the floor.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoflor SL4000 a real product, and is it available in India?
Yes. Nitoflor SL4000 is a genuine Fosroc industrial-flooring product with its own page on fosroc.com, and it is manufactured locally by Fosroc Chemicals (India). It is widely stocked by authorised Indian distributors. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies it across Delhi NCR and Pan-India as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator.
What thickness is Nitoflor SL4000 applied at, and how does it differ from SL3000?
SL4000 is a heavy-duty flow-applied epoxy topping laid at a nominal 4 mm. SL3000 is the medium-to-heavy-duty sibling laid at 3 mm. The extra build and aggregate loading in SL4000 give it more reserve against abrasion and impact, making it the better fit for the most demanding traffic aisles, AGV tracks and process floors.
What coverage should I plan, and what does a pack contain?
Each 15-litre pack (base, hardener, graded aggregate and colour pack) covers roughly 3.75 m2 at the 4 mm nominal thickness. Add around 10% for wastage and surface irregularities. The Nitoprime 25 primer covers about 5.5–6.5 m2 per litre, with porous slabs sometimes needing a second coat.
What substrate and surface preparation does it need?
A sound concrete or cementitious slab at least 28 days old, with relative humidity not exceeding 75% and no rising damp. The surface must be mechanically prepared — grit-blasting, scabbling or grinding — to remove laitance and contamination, then primed with Nitoprime 25 before the topping is laid. It must not be applied over asphalt, weak/friable concrete, unmodified screeds or PVC.
How long before the floor can be used after laying?
As a guide for the SL range, the floor typically accepts foot traffic after about 24 hours and vehicular traffic after about 48 hours, reaching full chemical resistance after roughly 7 days. Times lengthen in cold conditions; it should not be applied below about 10 C or above about 45 C. Confirm exact figures against the current SL4000 data sheet for your site temperature.
How does SL4000 compare to alternatives like Sikafloor or MasterTop/Ucrete?
SL4000 competes with self-levelling epoxy screeds such as Sika Sikafloor and BASF/MBS MasterTop epoxy systems, and within Fosroc’s own range with Nitoflor SL3000 and SL2000. For dry, heavy-traffic industrial floors it is an excellent choice. Where the main load is severe thermal shock, steam cleaning or aggressive chemical immersion, a polyurethane/cementitious-urethane screed such as Ucrete is usually more appropriate than any epoxy topping.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor SL4000

Nitoflor SL4000 sits at the heavy-duty end of Fosroc’s self-levelling epoxy family and is best understood alongside its siblings. Nitoflor SL3000 (3 mm) covers medium-to-heavy-duty floors, while SL2000 and the lighter SL/FC coatings suit lower-traffic or thin-film duties; step up to SL4000 when abrasion, impact and hard-wheeled traffic are the governing loads and you want a 4 mm wearing layer. Within the wider Fosroc flooring system it pairs with the Nitoprime 25 primer and Nitoflor Sol cleaner, and for specialist needs Fosroc offers conductive/dissipative (Nitoflor SL Conductive/Dissipative) and slip-resistant variants. Against the market, SL4000 competes directly with self-levelling epoxy screeds from Sika (Sikafloor self-smoothing systems) and BASF/Master Builders Solutions (MasterTop epoxy), all broadly comparable for dry, heavy-traffic industrial floors. The honest boundary is chemistry: epoxy toppings like SL4000 excel in dry, abrasion- and impact-led environments but are not the first choice where there is severe thermal shock, hot wash-down, steam cleaning or aggressive chemical immersion — there a polyurethane/cementitious-urethane screed such as Ucrete (MBS) or a Sikafloor PU system is the more durable specification. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering’s role is to match the right Nitoflor system to your actual service conditions rather than over- or under-specifying, and to supply trained crews for correct installation across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
