Fosroc Nitoflor FC500
A solvent-free, self-smoothing epoxy floor coating that delivers a seamless, hygienic, easy-to-clean finish between 0.25 and 1 mm for food processing, pharmaceutical, laboratory and healthcare floors.
What is it?
A two-part, solvent-free epoxy resin floor coating from Fosroc that self-smooths to a continuous, dust-free film. It is applied 0.25-1 mm thick in a single pass and supplied as a pre-weighed kit of resin, hardener, filler and a colour pack.
Where is it used?
Hygiene-critical and light-to-medium-duty interior concrete floors: food and beverage processing halls, clean rooms, pharmaceutical and laboratory areas, hospitals, packaging lines and light manufacturing or assembly zones.
Why use it?
It seals porous concrete into a jointless, chemically resistant, easy-to-clean surface that suppresses dusting, resists spillage and improves the working environment, at a lower thickness and cost than a full self-levelling screed.
How is it applied?
Concrete is prepared and primed with Nitoprime SP or Nitoprime 31 where needed, then the mixed FC500 is laid by trowel, squeegee or roller and de-aerated with a spiked roller; antislip grains can be broadcast for texture.
About Fosroc Nitoflor FC500
Fosroc Nitoflor FC500 is a high-performance, solvent-free epoxy floor coating engineered for interior concrete floors where a smooth, hygienic and easily cleaned surface is essential. Unlike a thin paint-grade coating, FC500 is a self-smoothing system: once mixed and spread, the resin flows out under its own weight to form a continuous, resin-rich film that levels minor surface texture and bridges the open porosity of the slab. It is laid between 0.25 mm and 1 mm in a single application, which positions it between a simple roller-applied floor paint and a full-bodied self-levelling epoxy screed. The product is supplied as a pre-weighed, multi-component kit comprising base resin, hardener, a fine aggregate filler and a Nitoflor colour pack, so the installer mixes only what is needed without site batching errors. Because it is solvent-free and taint-free, FC500 is suited to areas where odour and contamination are unacceptable during and after curing, such as food and pharmaceutical environments. For Indian projects, Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies FC500 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and on a Pan-India basis, pairing the material with the correct Nitoprime primer and antislip grain selection for each substrate and service condition.
The technical insight
FC500 cures to a hard, abrasion-resistant film with a Shore D hardness of 80 or more and abrasion loss of 0.03 g or less under a Taber-type 750 g / 500-revolution test, which is why it tolerates continuous foot traffic and light vehicular movement such as pallet trucks and trolleys. Its mechanical numbers, 60 MPa or more compressive strength and 25 MPa or more flexural strength at 7 days, refer to the cured resin matrix, not the concrete beneath, so substrate quality and preparation remain the controlling factor for real-world durability. The tensile bond strength of 3 MPa or more (and 2 MPa or more after water immersion), with failure occurring in the concrete rather than at the interface, confirms that a correctly primed, sound slab will fail in the concrete before the coating debonds, which is the outcome a specifier wants. Pot life is short, roughly 50 minutes at 25 degrees C and only 30 minutes at 35 degrees C, so in Indian summer conditions the mixed material must be placed quickly and in manageable batches. At 0.25-0.5 mm the filler is omitted; the filler is added to build 0.5-1 mm. Coverage is thickness-driven: about 4 m2/litre at 0.25 mm and about 2 m2/litre at 0.5 mm, before wastage. Note that FC500 is an interior product, is not UV-stable and may shade or yellow under direct sunlight without loss of performance, and must not be used over damp slabs, asphalt, friable concrete or moving substrates.
Where it is used
- Food and beverage processing halls, bottling and packaging lines requiring a washable, taint-free floor
- Pharmaceutical production suites and clean rooms where dust generation must be eliminated
- Laboratories and quality-control areas needing chemical-resistant, easily decontaminated floors
- Hospital and healthcare service areas, kitchens and ancillary spaces
- Light to medium manufacturing, assembly and electronics workshops with foot and light vehicular traffic
- Cold-store anterooms, dairies and commercial kitchens where hygiene and spill resistance matter
Key advantages
- Self-smoothing flow produces a seamless, jointless film that levels minor surface imperfections
- Hygienic, dust-free finish that is easy to clean with rotary scrubbers, water-soluble detergents or hot water up to 50 degrees C
- Solvent-free and taint-free, so it can be used in food, pharma and occupied interiors with minimal odour
- Good chemical resistance to a broad range of industrial acids, alkalis, oils and solvents, protecting the slab
- Hard-wearing: Shore D 80+ and very low abrasion loss withstand foot and light vehicular traffic
- Available in a range of standard colours and can be made slip-resistant with graded Nitoflor antislip grains
- Supplied as a pre-weighed kit, reducing on-site mixing errors and waste
- Applied at a controlled 0.25-1 mm, giving a cost-effective alternative to thicker self-levelling screeds for light-duty floors
Limitations & considerations
- Interior use only; not recommended for external exposure and not UV-stable, so it may shade or yellow under direct sunlight (cosmetic, not performance, change)
- Light-to-medium duty only; for heavy trucking, point loads or thermal-shock and wet-process areas a thicker SL epoxy or PU screed such as Nitoflor Floorcrete PU is more appropriate
- Short pot life (about 50 min at 25 degrees C, 30 min at 35 degrees C) demands quick placement, especially in hot Indian conditions
- Must not be applied to damp slabs, surfaces subject to rising damp or relative humidity above 75% (about 5% moisture), asphalt, friable or unsound concrete, PVC tiles/sheet, or moving substrates
- Do not apply below 5 degrees C, when temperature is falling toward 5 degrees C, or above 90% relative humidity; keep interior and floor above 10 degrees C during and for one week after application
- Performance depends heavily on correct surface preparation and priming; the cured film cannot mask defects in a poorly prepared slab
- Thin film (0.25-1 mm) offers limited crack-bridging and lower impact tolerance than a high-build screed
Selection & best practice
Allow new concrete to cure at least 28 days and confirm moisture content below 5% before coating. Mechanically prepare the slab (grinding or shot-blasting) to remove laitance, oil, curing compounds and contamination, then vacuum clean. Prime sound, non-porous concrete only where required, and always prime porous or doubtful slabs with Nitoprime SP or Nitoprime 31, allowing the primer to reach a tack-free state before coating. Mix the full pre-weighed kit, base into hardener, then the colour pack (and the filler for builds above 0.5 mm), using a slow-speed paddle for 2-3 minutes to a uniform consistency, and never add solvent thinners. Apply by trowel, squeegee or roller to a minimum 250 microns per pass and de-aerate with a spiked roller; for builds toward 1 mm add the filler component. Plan batch sizes to the short pot life, around 50 minutes at 25 degrees C and only 30 minutes at 35 degrees C, particularly in summer. For coverage, estimate roughly 4 m2/litre at 0.25 mm and 2 m2/litre at 0.5 mm and add about 10% for wastage and substrate irregularity. Allow about 24 hours before foot traffic and 7 days for full cure and chemical resistance. Carry existing expansion joints through the coating, and broadcast Nitoflor antislip grains into the wet film where a slip-resistant texture is needed.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor FC500
Within the Fosroc Nitoflor range, FC500 sits between the brush- and roller-applied high-build coatings such as Nitoflor FC150 (a 400-micron-plus, two-coat epoxy rated to roughly 70 MPa compressive strength for wet, chemically aggressive areas like dairies and workshops) and the thicker self-levelling and heavy-duty screeds. Choose FC500 when you want a genuinely self-smoothing, seamless, hygienic finish at 0.25-1 mm for food, pharma, lab and healthcare floors; step up to a full self-levelling epoxy or to Nitoflor Floorcrete PU (a polyurethane screed) when the floor faces thermal shock, heavy trucking, point loading or constant wet processing. For dry-shake hardened concrete floors, Fosroc’s Nitoflor Hardtop is the relevant alternative rather than a resin coating. Against competitors, FC500 is broadly comparable to Sika’s Sikafloor self-smoothing epoxy coatings and to BASF/Master Builders Solutions MasterTop epoxy systems for light-to-medium-duty hygienic floors; where extreme thermal and chemical duty is required, MBS Ucrete polyurethane-concrete floors are the recognised benchmark and align with the Floorcrete PU class rather than with FC500. Space Arc Engineering specifies FC500 only where its light-to-medium-duty profile fits, and recommends a heavier Nitoflor system honestly when the service conditions demand it.
