Fosroc Nitoflor TF5000
A 3–6 mm trowel-applied, solvent-free epoxy screed that turns ordinary concrete into a seamless, chemical- and abrasion-resistant industrial floor built for steelworks, refineries, food plants and battery rooms.
What is it?
A three-part, solvent-free epoxy resin floor screed (resin + modified amine hardener + graded inert aggregate) laid by trowel at 3–6 mm to form a dense, seamless, heavy-duty topping over concrete or steel.
Where is it used?
Aggressive industrial environments across India — heavy engineering plants, steelworks, chemical process and handling areas, oil refineries, plating and paint workshops, battery and switch rooms, dairies, breweries, soft-drink and food/sugar factories.
Why use it?
It delivers far higher strength and chemical/abrasion resistance than bare concrete (>45 N/mm² compressive vs ~20 for concrete), is impervious and seamless, and provides a safe non-slip surface for foot and vehicular traffic with minimal build-up on existing levels.
How is it applied?
Prepare and prime the substrate (Nitoprime 25 on concrete, Nitoprime 28 on grit-blasted steel), then trowel-apply the pre-weighed TF5000 screed at the design thickness; an optional Nitoflor FC140 epoxy seal coat can be added where high cleanability is required.
About Fosroc Nitoflor TF5000
Fosroc Nitoflor TF5000 is a heavy-duty, trowel-applied epoxy resin floor screed designed for the most demanding industrial floors — places where ordinary concrete or thin coatings simply wear out, chemically degrade, or fail at joints. It is supplied as a three-part, solvent-free system: an epoxy resin base, a modified amine hardener, and a carefully graded blend of high-crushing-strength, chemically inert aggregates. When these pre-weighed components are mixed and laid by trowel at a nominal 3 to 6 mm thickness, they cure into a dense, impervious, monolithic topping that is bonded to the substrate and resistant to both mechanical wear and chemical spillage.\n\nThe product sits at the upper end of Fosroc’s Nitoflor industrial-flooring family. Where thinner self-smoothing or roller-coat systems (such as the Nitoflor FC range) are about appearance and light-to-medium duty, TF5000 is a workhorse screed engineered for abuse. The very careful selection of amine curing agent and aggregate grading is what gives it both its high compressive strength and its broad chemical resistance. The finished floor has a slightly granular texture of uniform colour that grips underfoot and under tyre, and where a smoother, more easily cleaned surface is needed, the screed can be sealed with a Nitoflor FC140 epoxy topcoat available in a range of colours.\n\nFor Indian projects, Nitoflor TF5000 is manufactured and supported locally by Fosroc Chemicals (India) Pvt. Ltd., and the system is backed by a full primer, sealer and technical-advisory ecosystem — making it a specifiable, repeatable solution rather than a one-off product. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies the complete TF5000 system across Delhi NCR and Pan-India as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator.
The technical insight
The performance of Nitoflor TF5000 comes from three deliberate design choices, and understanding them helps consultants specify it correctly. First, it is a filled epoxy screed, not a coating: the high crushing-strength inert aggregate carries the compressive and abrasion load (compressive strength >45 N/mm² to ASTM C579, more than double typical concrete, with a mixed density around 2.2 g/cc), while the epoxy binder locks the matrix together and seals it against chemicals. Second, chemical resistance is governed by the amine curing chemistry — fully cured blocks rate ‘excellent’ against dilute mineral acids (e.g. 10% sulphuric, 10% citric), urea, sugar and salt solutions, oils, xylene, white spirit, ammonia and bleach, ‘good’ against 18% hydrochloric and 50% sulphuric acid, but only suitable for occasional-spillage duty against strong oxidising acids such as nitric and concentrated phosphoric acid. Specifiers should always check the actual spill spectrum against the chemical-resistance table rather than assume blanket resistance. Third, bond is everything: TF5000 develops a pull-off adhesion of >2.5 N/mm² (ASTM D4541), but only when the substrate is sound, dry and correctly primed — Nitoprime 25 on concrete, and on steel a Sa 2½ blast finish followed by the solvent-based Nitoprime 28. With flexural strength >13 N/mm² (BS6319) and tensile strength >7 N/mm² (BS6319 Part 7) it behaves as a rigid topping, so movement and construction joints in the slab must be honoured through the screed, not bridged.
Where it is used
- Heavy engineering plants, fabrication shops and steelworks subject to dropped tools, dragged loads and forklift wear
- Chemical handling, decanting and process areas where spillage of acids, alkalis and solvents is routine
- Oil refineries, petrochemical plants and lube/oil handling bays exposed to hydrocarbons and oils
- Electroplating, anodising and paint workshops where corrosive chemicals and overspray attack the floor
- Battery charging rooms, switch rooms and electrical substations needing acid resistance and a robust surface
- Dairies, breweries, soft-drink, sugar and food-processing plants requiring an impervious, washable, hygienic floor
- Lighter-duty areas where above-average durability and low long-term maintenance cost justify a screed over a thin coating
Key advantages
- High compressive strength of >45 N/mm² (ASTM C579) — more than double that of typical industrial concrete
- Broad chemical resistance across dilute acids, alkalis, oils, solvents, salts, sugar and bleach from the engineered amine cure
- Excellent abrasion and impact resistance from graded high-crushing-strength inert aggregate
- Seamless, impervious finish that eliminates joints as failure points and resists liquid penetration
- Safe non-slip, slightly granular texture suitable for both pedestrian and vehicular (forklift) traffic
- Solvent-free formulation in the screed, reducing odour and fire risk during placement compared with solvented toppings
- Thin nominal build at 3–6 mm causes minimal interference with existing floor levels, thresholds and drainage falls
- Pre-weighed, factory-proportioned units that remove site batching errors and give consistent, repeatable results
- Fast return to service — accepts top-coating within 24 hours and light vehicular traffic at around 48 hours
- Locally manufactured and technically supported by Fosroc Chemicals (India), with a complete primer/sealer system
Limitations & considerations
- Trowel-applied screed requiring skilled, experienced applicators — not a DIY or general-purpose coating; finish quality depends heavily on workmanship
- Only suitable for occasional-spillage duty against strong oxidising acids such as nitric acid and concentrated phosphoric acid; not a universal acid-resistant floor
- As a rigid epoxy topping it does not bridge moving cracks or joints — slab movement and construction joints must be carried through and detailed
- Demands thorough substrate preparation: concrete at least 28 days old with moisture content below ~5%, laitance removed, and steel grit-blasted to Sa 2½ before priming
- Epoxy chemistry can chalk, discolour or lose gloss under prolonged direct UV/sunlight, so it is intended for interior/covered floors
- Limited service-temperature and thermal-shock tolerance compared with polyurethane (PU/Ucrete-type) screeds, making it less ideal for steam-cleaned wet areas with severe thermal cycling
- Some operatives are sensitive to epoxy resins and amine hardeners; gloves, eye protection and good ventilation are mandatory during mixing and laying
- Shelf life is limited to 12 months in unopened packs stored below ~35°C, so stock rotation matters in Indian summer conditions
Selection & best practice
Specify and lay Nitoflor TF5000 as a complete system, not just the screed. On concrete, confirm the slab is at least 28 days old with moisture content below about 5%, remove laitance by grit-blasting, scabbling or grinding (or acid-etch small areas with Reebaklens, then wash and dry), and prime with Nitoprime 25 while it is still tacky. On steel, blast to Sa 2½ and prime with Nitoprime 28. For thickness, the screed is laid at 3–6 mm depending on duty — use 5–6 mm for heavy-traffic and severe chemical zones and 3 mm only for lighter duty. For coverage, plan on roughly one 12-litre TF5000 pack per 2.4 m² at 5 mm thickness (scale proportionally for other thicknesses), with Nitoprime 25 covering about 5.5–6.5 m² per litre; always add a wastage allowance for porous or uneven substrates. Mix only full pre-weighed units, respect the >60-minute pot life at 27 °C (shorter when hot), and honour all movement and construction joints through the screed. Where high cleanliness is required, seal with a Nitoflor FC140 epoxy topcoat. Protect from traffic during cure — initial hardness develops in about 18 hours, top-coating after 24 hours, light vehicular traffic after 48 hours, and full cure at 7 days. How we position Fosroc Nitoflor TF5000
Within the Fosroc Nitoflor range, TF5000 is the heavy-duty screed of choice when bare concrete or a thin epoxy coating will not survive the chemical and mechanical abuse of an industrial floor. It pairs naturally with Fosroc’s own Nitoprime 25/28 primers and can be finished with a Nitoflor FC140 (or wider Nitoflor FC range) epoxy seal coat where a smoother, more cleanable, coloured surface is wanted — making FC-range coatings complementary rather than competing products. For lighter-duty or decorative floors, those thinner self-smoothing/roller systems are usually the more economical specification, while TF5000 earns its place where strength, abrasion and chemical resistance are the priority. Against competitor systems, credible alternatives in the Indian market include Sika’s Sikafloor heavy-duty epoxy mortar/screed systems and MBCC/Master Builders Solutions MasterTop epoxy screeds. Where the environment involves severe thermal shock, steam cleaning, or aggressive wet-process conditions, a polyurethane (PU) screed such as MasterTop Ucrete or a Sikafloor PU-cement system may outperform an epoxy screed like TF5000 on thermal and impact tolerance — so the right choice depends on the specific chemical spectrum, temperature regime and traffic. Space Arc Engineering can help consultants and procurement teams compare these options objectively and specify the most appropriate system for each area of a plant.
