What is it?

A quality-controlled, factory-blended dry-shake powder of graded quartz/silica aggregate, Portland cement and workability additives that is broadcast and trowelled into fresh, wet concrete to harden the wearing surface monolithically.

Where is it used?

Car parks, garages, warehouse and storage floors, loading bays, workshops and general light-to-medium-duty industrial and commercial concrete floors across India.

Why use it?

It raises the abrasion resistance and density of the top few millimetres of a concrete slab in a single operation, cuts dusting and surface wear, and avoids the curling, shrinkage and cracking associated with separately bonded thin screeds.

How is it applied?

Applied by the two-stage dry-shake method onto stiffening fresh concrete, then power-floated and trowelled by a trained applicator to lock the aggregate into the slab surface.

About Fosroc Nitoflor Quartztop

Fosroc Nitoflor Quartztop is a non-metallic, dry-shake surface hardener from Fosroc’s Nitoflor industrial-flooring range. It is supplied as a quality-controlled, factory-blended powder that is ready to use on site, requiring no on-site batching, mixing of liquids or additives. The blend combines selected and graded quartz/silica aggregate with Portland cement and workability additives, producing a material that is easy to trowel into the surface of fresh, wet concrete.\n\nThe principle behind Quartztop is monolithic hardening. Rather than laying a separate granolithic or screed topping that must bond to a cured slab, the powder is broadcast directly onto concrete that is still green and is worked into the surface paste while moisture from the slab hydrates the cement in the blend. The result is a wearing surface that is an integral part of the slab, not a layer sitting on top of it. Because there is no cold joint or applied film, the common failure modes of thin bonded toppings, curling at edges, drying-shrinkage cracking and debonding, are largely eliminated.\n\nOnce cured, the treated surface is dense, low in porosity and considerably more abrasion-resistant than untreated concrete. The quartz/silica aggregate is hard and chemically inert in normal service, and being non-metallic it will not rust or stain when the floor is wet, an important distinction from older iron-filing hardeners. For Space Arc Engineering’s clients in Delhi NCR and across India, Quartztop is a cost-effective way to upgrade the durability of a power-floated concrete floor at the point of casting, while leaving the option open to later overcoat the surface with a Fosroc epoxy or polyurethane system if a coloured or chemically resistant finish is needed.\n\nQuartztop sits in the middle of Fosroc’s dry-shake hardener ladder: above an unhardened trowelled slab, comparable in approach to Nitoflor Hardtop but using a quartz/silica rather than emery aggregate, and below the heavy-duty emery (Nitoflor Emeritop) and conductive/anti-spark (Nitoflor Armourtop) variants used for the most severe wear and special-hazard floors.

The technical insight

The performance of any dry-shake hardener is governed almost entirely by aggregate hardness, application rate and timing, not by the cement alone. Quartz/silica sits around 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, which is why it markedly out-performs ordinary concrete fines (typically Mohs 3-5) yet does not reach the abrasion resistance of emery/corundum-based hardeners such as Nitoflor Emeritop, whose aggregate is harder still and resists polishing as it wears. In Fosroc’s dry-shake range the gain in abrasion resistance over plain concrete is driven by coverage rate: heavier broadcast loadings build a thicker, denser hardened skin and a correspondingly larger improvement. The other decisive factor is timing, the powder must go down when the slab has stiffened just enough that light foot traffic leaves a 3-6 mm imprint and the bleed water has evaporated to a wet sheen; too early and trapped bleed water weakens the surface, too late and the powder cannot wet out and bond. Adding water to ‘help’ the shake is detrimental and is specifically discouraged. Because the hardened layer is only a few millimetres of cementitious matrix, it shares concrete’s chemistry: it resists oils, grease and physical wear well but is not a barrier to acids or aggressive chemicals, where a resin topping is the correct specification.

Where it is used

  • Multi-storey and basement car parks, ramps and garage floors
  • Warehouse and distribution floors, racking aisles and loading bays
  • Light and medium-duty manufacturing and assembly workshops
  • Storage areas and godowns subject to pallet, trolley and foot traffic
  • General commercial and institutional concrete floors requiring reduced dusting
  • As a hard, dense base that can later be overcoated with a Fosroc epoxy or PU floor system

Key advantages

  • Supplied ready to use as a factory-blended powder, no site additives or liquid mixing required
  • Bonds monolithically to fresh concrete, avoiding the curling, shrinkage and cracking of separate thin screeds
  • Produces a dense, low-porosity, hard-wearing and abrasion-resistant wearing surface
  • Non-metallic quartz/silica aggregate will not rust or stain when the floor is wet
  • Hard, dense finish is resistant to oils and grease in normal service
  • Reduces surface dusting and improves long-term cleanability of the slab
  • Economical, single-operation upgrade applied at the time of casting
  • Can be overcoated later with epoxy or polyurethane floor systems for colour or chemical resistance

Limitations & considerations

  • Not chemically resistant, must not be used in areas exposed to acids, their salts or other media that attack Portland-cement concrete; specify a resin topping instead
  • Performance depends on a correctly designed, compacted base slab and on accurate application timing, so it should be installed by a trained/approved applicator
  • Lower ultimate abrasion resistance than emery-based (Nitoflor Emeritop) hardeners for the most severe wear
  • Cannot rescue a poor or contaminated base concrete; the slab mix, slump and finishing all govern the result
  • Adding water during the shake, or applying too early over bleed water, degrades surface quality
  • As a thin cementitious wearing surface it offers no crack-bridging, decorative colour range or seamless hygienic finish that resin or PU systems provide
  • Proper curing of the treated slab is essential to develop the finished surface properties

Selection & best practice

Design the base slab for hardening: aim for a controlled mix with a low water:cement ratio, minimal segregation and only limited, controlled bleed so moisture is available to wet out the powder. Mark the floor into bays of known area and pre-position the correct quantity of Quartztop before placing concrete. Begin the dry shake only when the slab has stiffened to the point where light foot traffic leaves an imprint of roughly 3-6 mm and any bleed water has evaporated to a wet sheen. Apply in two broadcasts at right angles to each other, floating each pass (wooden float on small areas, power float on large floors) as it darkens by absorbing moisture, and avoid overworking the surface. Give bay edges, control joints and corners extra protection. Never add water to assist the shake. Cure the completed floor thoroughly; if a subsequent epoxy or PU coating is planned, confirm the compatible curing method with Fosroc/Space Arc first. For dry-shake hardeners of this class a typical overall coverage is in the region of 3-5 kg/m2 depending on the duty, and product is supplied in 25 kg bags, confirm the exact rate and pack for Nitoflor Quartztop against the current Fosroc India technical data sheet for your project.

Specified as a hardened, dense base on which a coloured or chemically resistant Fosroc epoxy/PU floor can later be installed, future-proofing the slab.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nitoflor Quartztop a real Fosroc product?
Yes. Nitoflor Quartztop is listed on Fosroc’s official website as part of the Nitoflor industrial-flooring range. It is a factory-blended, non-metallic dry-shake floor hardener based on graded quartz/silica aggregate, Portland cement and workability additives. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator.
How is Quartztop different from Nitoflor Hardtop and Emeritop?
All three are monolithic dry-shake hardeners applied the same way. Quartztop uses a quartz/silica aggregate, Hardtop uses special hard-wearing (emery-type) aggregate, and Emeritop uses graded emery/corundite, the hardest of the three, for the most severe abrasion and a skid-resistant surface. Quartztop typically suits light-to-medium duty floors, while Emeritop and the conductive Armourtop variant target heavy-duty and special-hazard floors.
What coverage and pack size should I plan for?
Dry-shake hardeners in this Fosroc range are generally applied at around 3-5 kg/m2 depending on the duty and are supplied in 25 kg bags. The exact published rate for Quartztop should be taken from the current Fosroc India technical data sheet for your project, contact Space Arc Engineering for the latest figures and a project-specific quantity estimate.
Can Quartztop be used in chemical or food-process areas?
No, not on its own. Like the slab it hardens, Quartztop is a cementitious surface and is not resistant to acids or aggressive chemicals. For chemical exposure, food and beverage, dairy or pharmaceutical floors, a resin topping such as Nitoflor SL3000 (epoxy) or a PU screed is the correct specification. Quartztop can, however, serve as a hardened base beneath such systems.
Can I apply it to an existing, already-cured concrete floor?
No. Quartztop is a dry-shake hardener that must be worked into fresh, wet concrete so it cures monolithically with the slab. It cannot be broadcast onto a hardened floor. To upgrade an existing slab, a bonded screed or a resin/epoxy coating system would be specified instead.
Does the floor need a coating afterwards?
Usually not, the high density and low porosity of the hardened surface mean further treatment is often unnecessary. Where colour, a seamless hygienic finish or chemical resistance is needed, the Quartztop floor can be overcoated with a compatible Fosroc epoxy or polyurethane system; confirm the curing and coating sequence with Space Arc beforehand.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor Quartztop

Within Fosroc’s own range, Nitoflor Quartztop is the quartz/silica option in the Nitoflor dry-shake hardener family. It is a practical step up from a plain trowelled slab and broadly comparable to Nitoflor Hardtop / Hardtop Standard, while Nitoflor Colortop adds a wide colour range, Nitoflor Emeritop offers a harder emery aggregate for severe abrasion and wet skid resistance, and Nitoflor Armourtop provides conductive, anti-spark performance for hazardous areas. Where a floor needs chemical resistance, seamless hygiene or decorative colour rather than just hardening, the right Fosroc choice is a resin topping such as the flow-applied epoxy Nitoflor SL3000 or a polyurethane screed instead of, or over, a dry-shake hardener. Among credible alternatives from other manufacturers, Sika’s Sikafloor and Sika Chapdur dry-shake hardeners, and BASF/MBCC MasterTop dry-shake hardeners (with Ucrete PU screeds for heavy chemical/thermal duty), occupy the equivalent positions. Space Arc Engineering specifies Quartztop where the objective is an economical, durable, dust-reduced hardened concrete floor for car parks, warehouses and light-to-medium industrial use, and steers clients toward emery hardeners or resin/PU systems when the duty, chemistry or aesthetics demand more.
