What is it?

A three-component, water-dispersed (water-based) pigmented epoxy resin coating and sealer that cures to a hard, flexible matt film on concrete and cementitious substrates.

Where is it used?

Hygiene-critical and protective-coating duties: breweries, dairies, kitchens, food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical and healthcare areas, laboratories, warehouses and light-traffic industrial floors and walls.

Why use it?

Zero-VOC and low-odour so it can be applied in occupied or enclosed spaces, gives an impervious, antifungal, easy-to-clean surface, and improves the chemical and abrasion resistance of bare concrete at modest cost.

How is it applied?

Site-mix the three pre-packed components (colour paste into hardener, then base), then apply by brush or lambswool roller in two coats over prepared, primed concrete at roughly 180 microns WFT per coat.

About Fosroc Nitocote EPW100

Fosroc Nitocote EPW100 is a water-based epoxy coating and sealer engineered to turn ordinary concrete into a sealed, hygienic and chemically more resistant surface. It is supplied as a three-component, pre-weighed kit (colour paste, hardener and base) that is dispersed in water rather than solvent, which is the defining feature of the product: it carries effectively zero VOC and very little odour, so applicators can work inside enclosed tanks, occupied food-processing halls, kitchens and laboratories without the ventilation and fire-risk constraints of solvent-borne epoxies. On Fosroc’s flooring range the same formulation is catalogued as Nitoflor EPW100, while in protective-coating specifications it appears as Nitocote EPW100; the chemistry, packaging and application are identical, and Indian distributors list both names for the one product. Once mixed and applied, the resin coalesces and cures to a hard yet flexible matt film that bonds tightly to concrete, screeds and other cementitious backgrounds. The cured coating is impervious, dust-proofs the surface, resists fungal and microbial attack, and stands up to splash and spillage from a range of industrial chemicals, oils and greases, all while remaining easy to wash down. For Indian contractors, consultants and facility owners it sits in a useful middle ground, more durable and hygienic than a cementitious dustproofer or acrylic floor paint, but lighter-duty, faster and cleaner to apply than a high-build solvent or 100% solids epoxy system. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Nitocote/Nitoflor EPW100 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

The technical insight

The performance of EPW100 comes from its waterborne epoxy-dispersion chemistry. Because the epoxy and hardener are carried in water, the film forms by a two-stage process of water evaporation followed by chemical cross-linking, which is why curing is sensitive to temperature and humidity and why the recommended minimum application temperature is about 20 degrees C. The three-part mix is deliberate: the colour paste is first stirred into the hardener for about three minutes, then the base is added and blended for a further two to three minutes, giving a uniform pigmented system with a workable pot life of roughly 2 hours at 20 degrees C, shortening to about 1 hour at 30 degrees C. At the recommended wet film thickness of around 180 microns per coat the product builds to about 100 microns dry film thickness (DFT), and two coats are normally specified to ensure a continuous, pinhole-free seal. Inter-coat timing matters: overcoat within about 24 hours at 20 degrees C (16 hours at 30 degrees C); the film reaches initial hardness in roughly 30 hours at 20 degrees C (24 hours at 30 degrees C) and develops full chemical and mechanical cure over about 21 days. Because it is a relatively thin-film coating rather than a self-levelling screed, it follows the texture of the substrate exactly, so the quality of surface preparation and priming directly governs the finished result.

Where it is used

  • Sealing and dust-proofing concrete floors in food and beverage plants, breweries and dairies
  • Hygienic wall and floor coating in commercial kitchens and catering areas
  • Protective, easily-cleaned finish in pharmaceutical, healthcare and laboratory spaces
  • General light-to-medium duty industrial floors, workshops and warehouse aisles
  • Coating to water-retaining and process structures such as tanks, reservoirs, ducts and silos where a low-odour waterborne system is required
  • Refurbishment of tired concrete where a quick-drying, low-odour hygienic re-coat is needed in occupied premises

Key advantages

  • Water-based and effectively zero-VOC, with low odour, allowing safe use in enclosed and occupied areas
  • Produces an impervious, hygienic, easy-to-clean matt surface that is dust-free
  • Antifungal and resistant to microbial and fungal attack, suiting food and pharma hygiene needs
  • Improves the resistance of concrete to many industrial chemicals, oils and greases
  • Pre-packed three-component kit removes site batching errors and gives consistent mixing
  • Available in a range of colours for zoning, demarcation and aesthetics
  • Simple brush or roller application with no specialist hot-works or solvent handling
  • Bonds well to concrete and cementitious substrates and remains flexible after cure

Limitations & considerations

  • A thin-film coating (approx. 100 microns DFT/coat), not a high-build screed; it will not level or repair uneven or damaged concrete
  • Suited to light-to-medium foot and light-trolley traffic, not heavy forklift or steel-wheel abrasion where a high-build or solids epoxy is needed
  • Application and cure are temperature/humidity sensitive; minimum about 20 degrees C and unsuitable in damp, condensing or rapidly cooling conditions
  • Substrate must be sound, dry and properly prepared and primed; poor preparation leads to delamination
  • Long full-cure period of about 21 days before maximum chemical resistance is achieved
  • Matt finish and waterborne build offer lower gloss and lower chemical resistance than solvent-borne or 100% solids epoxy coatings
  • Limited shelf life of around 6 months in unopened containers; protect from frost and direct sun in storage

Selection & best practice

Treat surface preparation as the most important step. The concrete must be fully cured, sound and dry, with all oil, grease, curing compounds, laitance and old coatings removed by mechanical preparation such as grinding or shot-blasting, or by acid etching with Fosroc Reebaklens followed by thorough washing and drying. Make good blowholes and defects and prime the surface as recommended before coating. Mix the three components in the correct sequence and only as much as can be used within the pot life. Apply two coats by brush or lambswool roller at the specified wet film thickness, working the material out evenly and avoiding ponding or thick build-up that can trap water and stay soft. Respect the overcoat window and do not apply below the minimum temperature or onto damp substrates. Allow the coating to develop initial hardness before foot traffic and to fully cure for around three weeks before exposing it to aggressive chemicals or wet wash-down. Frequently asked questions

Is Nitocote EPW100 the same as Nitoflor EPW100?
Yes. It is one product with two catalogue names. Fosroc lists the water-dispersed epoxy coating and sealer as Nitoflor EPW100 in its flooring range and as Nitocote EPW100 in protective-coating contexts. The chemistry, three-component pack and application are identical, and Indian distributors use both names interchangeably.
What is the coverage of EPW100 per pack?
Approximately 20-22 m² per 4 litre pack per coat at 180 microns wet film thickness, which builds to about 100 microns dry film thickness. Two coats are normally specified, so plan roughly half that area per pack for a full two-coat system, and add allowance for porous or rough concrete.
How many coats are needed and how thick is the film?
Two coats are normally recommended. Each coat is applied at about 180 microns wet, drying to about 100 microns DFT, giving a continuous, pinhole-free seal. It is a thin-film coating, not a self-levelling screed.
How long before the floor can be used and is fully cured?
The film reaches initial hardness in roughly 30 hours at 20°C (24 hours at 30°C), so light foot traffic can usually follow after that. Full chemical and mechanical cure develops over about 21 days, after which it can take aggressive chemicals and regular wet wash-down.
What surface preparation does EPW100 need?
The concrete must be sound, fully cured and dry. Remove oil, grease, curing compounds, laitance and old coatings by mechanical means (grinding/shot-blasting) or by acid etching with Fosroc Reebaklens, then wash and dry thoroughly, make good defects and prime before coating. Preparation quality directly determines adhesion and finish.
Does it have low odour and is it safe for occupied or enclosed areas?
Yes. EPW100 is water-dispersed, effectively zero-VOC and low in odour, which is its main advantage over solvent-borne epoxies. This makes it well suited to enclosed tanks, occupied food and pharma facilities and confined spaces, though normal PPE and adequate ventilation are still advised.

How we position Fosroc Nitocote EPW100

Nitocote EPW100 occupies the hygienic, low-odour end of Fosroc’s protective and flooring coatings range. It is the waterborne alternative to solvent-borne and high-build systems: where heavy chemical attack, thick build or forklift-grade abrasion is involved, specifiers move up to solvent or 100% solids epoxies such as Fosroc Nitoflor FC150 / Nitoflor TF or screeds in the Nitoflor SL range, and for high-build protective duties to coatings like Nitocote EP405 or the Dekguard anti-carbonation family. Within the waterborne niche it sits alongside Nitocote EPS, with EPW100 chosen specifically when zero-VOC, antifungal hygiene and easy application in occupied food, dairy, brewery, pharma and laboratory environments are the priority. For surface preparation it pairs with Fosroc Reebaklens etchant and the appropriate primer. Credible competitor products an Indian consultant might also evaluate include Sika’s Sikafloor waterborne epoxy coatings (e.g. Sikafloor-2530W / Garrison series), MBCC/Master Builders Solutions Ucrete and MasterTop waterborne epoxy floor coatings, Dr. Fixit’s industrial floor coating range, and STP/STP-branded epoxy floor systems. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator in Delhi NCR and Pan-India, can advise on whether EPW100 or a higher-duty alternative best fits your service conditions and supply the complete primer-plus-topcoat system.
