What is it?

A range of specially graded, chemically inert aggregates broadcast into or mixed with Fosroc Nitoflor epoxy, PU and polyaspartic floor coatings to build a controlled non-slip surface texture.

Where is it used?

Wet-process and high-traffic industrial floors — food and beverage plants, dairies, breweries, abattoirs, chemical and pharma units, loading bays, ramps, walkways and machine surrounds.

Why use it?

It converts a smooth resin floor into a safe, slip-resistant one without changing the coating system, with four texture grades to match the duty and a chemically inert grain that will not stain or react.

How is it applied?

Grades 1-3 are scattered (broadcast) vertically onto the first wet roller coat of Nitoflor resin to fully blind the surface; excess is reclaimed once dry and a sealing topcoat is applied. Fine grades are pre-mixed into thin-film coatings.

About Fosroc Nitoflor Anti Slip Grains

Fosroc Nitoflor Anti Slip Grains are a family of hard-wearing, chemically inert aggregates designed to be used with the Fosroc Nitoflor range of resin floor coatings and self-smoothing toppings to produce a defined non-slip industrial floor. Rather than being a coating in their own right, the grains are the texturing component of a flooring system: they are introduced into a Nitoflor epoxy, polyurethane or polyaspartic finish so that the cured floor presents a coarse, controlled profile that gives positive underfoot and wheeled-traffic traction even when wet, oily or contaminated.

The product is supplied in four grades that step from coarse to extra-fine, so the specifier can dial in exactly how aggressive the surface texture needs to be. Grain No. 1 is a road-stone-quality aggregate used with the Nitoflor SL self-smoothing toppings to give the coarsest, most aggressive finish; No. 2 is a medium-coarse grade for Nitoflor FC150 and the SL range; No. 3 is a finely graded aggregate for a lighter, fine-textured non-slip finish; and No. 4 is an extra-fine grade used with thin-film coatings such as Nitoflor FC140 to produce a fine texture only 0.3 to 0.6 mm thick. Regional Fosroc variants extend the family further — for example silica-sand grains (#16/30), angular calcined-bauxite grains for resinous PU floors, silicon-carbide grains for cementitious surfaces, and fine HDPE granules that disperse into roller-applied sealers.

For Indian contractors, consultants and facility owners this is a practical, low-cost way to upgrade an otherwise smooth Nitoflor floor to meet slip-resistance and workplace-safety expectations in factories, warehouses and processing areas. Because the grains are inert, non-hazardous and non-flammable, they suit hygiene-sensitive and chemically aggressive environments where the floor must be both safe and cleanable. Space Arc Engineering supplies Nitoflor Anti Slip Grains across Delhi NCR and Pan-India as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, and can recommend the correct grade and matching Nitoflor coating for a given duty.

The technical insight

The grains are not a binder — they are a graded filler whose job is purely geometric and tribological. Slip resistance on a resin floor is governed by the micro- and macro-texture that projects above the cured film, so the chosen grain size directly controls both the coefficient of friction and the final floor thickness. With Nitoflor FC150, for instance, the coarse No. 1 grade yields a finished floor of about 2.0-2.5 mm, the medium No. 2 grade 1.5-2.0 mm, and the fine No. 3 grade 0.75-1.5 mm; the extra-fine No. 4 grade in a thin-film FC140 system gives only 0.3-0.6 mm. The aggregate being chemically inert (silica, calcined bauxite, silicon carbide or HDPE depending on grade) means it does not react with the resin, does not stain, and resists the abrasion and chemical attack that would otherwise polish a floor smooth and reintroduce a slip hazard over time. The critical application principle is that the grain must fall vertically onto the wet first coat and fully blind it; throwing it laterally scours the film and creates ridges, while under-seeding leaves bald, slippery patches.

Where it is used

  • Broadcasting into the wet first roller coat of Nitoflor FC150 / FC130 / FC140 epoxy coatings to build a non-slip film
  • Texturing Nitoflor SL2000, SL3000 and SL4000 self-smoothing epoxy toppings (sealed with a final FC150 coat)
  • Adding traction to polyurethane cement floors such as Nitoflor PU200 / PU600 in wet-process areas
  • Creating fine-textured anti-slip finishes on thin-film coatings and polyaspartic sealers
  • Slip-resistant ramps, loading bays, walkways and stair treads in factories and warehouses
  • Wet zones requiring hot-water or steam cleaning (e.g. abattoirs, dairies) using the chemically and thermally resistant grades

Key advantages

  • Four texture grades (coarse to extra-fine) to precisely match the required slip resistance and floor thickness
  • Chemically inert aggregate that will not stain, react with the resin, or break down chemically
  • Hard-wearing, abrasion-resistant grains that hold their texture under heavy and wheeled traffic
  • Pre-packed and ready for immediate site use, with grading already matched to specific Nitoflor products
  • Non-hazardous and non-flammable, suiting food, dairy, pharma and chemical environments
  • Excess grain can be brushed or vacuumed off when dry and re-used if still clean, reducing waste
  • Upgrades an existing smooth Nitoflor floor to a safe, compliant non-slip surface without changing the coating system
  • Backed by Fosroc’s technical support and supplied with matching primers, coatings and sealers

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a standalone product — it only performs as part of a compatible Nitoflor resin floor system
  • Performance depends heavily on correct seeding technique; uneven or insufficient broadcast leaves slippery bald spots
  • The grains themselves provide no waterproofing, chemical resistance or bond — those come from the Nitoflor coating
  • Coarser grades create a more aggressive texture that is harder to clean and can trap soiling in hygiene-critical areas
  • The aggregate must be clean and dry before use; damp or contaminated grain will not bond into the film
  • Must be matched to the correct grade for the chosen Nitoflor product — using the wrong grade gives the wrong texture or thickness
  • Grade availability and exact composition (silica, bauxite, silicon carbide, HDPE) vary by Fosroc region, so the specified variant should be confirmed before ordering

Selection & best practice

Select the grain grade from the target slip resistance and the Nitoflor coating being used, then confirm coverage at roughly 2-4 kg/m² so the surface is fully blinded. Apply the first roller coat of Nitoflor resin to a clean, dry, properly primed substrate and, while it is still wet, let the grain fall vertically onto the film to completely cover it — never throw it across the surface, as this scours the coating and creates ridges. Once the coat has cured, brush or vacuum off the loose excess (which can be re-used if clean and dry) and apply the final sealing roller coat of Nitoflor FC to lock the texture in and deliver the chemical and abrasion resistance. Always store grains in their original unopened bags in dry conditions, and run a small site trial panel to verify the achieved texture and slip rating before committing to the full floor.

Industry use cases

Food & Beverage Processing

Wet-process floors in dairies, breweries and food plants where spillage of water, oils and product makes a smooth resin floor dangerous — coarse to medium grades broadcast into Nitoflor coatings restore safe traction.

Pharmaceutical & Chemical Plants

Production and wash-down areas needing a cleanable, chemically resistant floor with reliable slip resistance; inert grains avoid staining or reaction in aggressive environments.

Warehousing & Logistics

Loading bays, ramps and walkways subject to wheeled traffic and weather-tracked moisture, where a defined non-slip texture reduces slip-and-trip incidents.

Automotive & Engineering Workshops

Machine surrounds, oil-prone bays and circulation routes that need a hard-wearing, oil-resistant non-slip finish over Nitoflor epoxy or PU floors.

Abattoirs & Wet Industries

Floors regularly cleaned with hot water or steam, using thermally and chemically resistant grades to keep the surface safe and durable under constant wet conditions.

Commercial & Institutional

Kitchens, plant rooms, service corridors and stair treads in hospitals, hotels and institutions where a fine-textured, easily cleaned anti-slip finish is specified.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoflor Anti Slip Grains a coating or a floor on its own?
No. It is a graded aggregate additive, not a coating. The grains only perform when broadcast into or mixed with a compatible Nitoflor resin coating such as FC150, an SL topping or a PU cement system. The Nitoflor coating provides the bond, waterproofing and chemical resistance, while the grains provide the non-slip texture.
Which grade should I choose?
It depends on how aggressive a texture you need and which Nitoflor product you are using. Grade No.1 (coarse) gives the most aggressive finish with the SL toppings; No.2 is medium-coarse for FC150 and SL; No.3 is fine; and No.4 is extra-fine for thin-film coatings like FC140. As a rule, wetter and more slip-prone areas use coarser grades, while areas needing easy cleaning use finer grades.
How much do I need per square metre?
Approximate usage is 2-4 kg/m², which works out to roughly 8-16 m² per 25 kg bag. Coarser grades and full-blinding finishes sit at the higher end of that range. Always confirm against the current Fosroc TDS and a site trial panel.
How are the grains applied?
Grades 1-3 are scattered onto the first wet roller coat of Nitoflor resin and allowed to fall vertically so the surface is completely blinded. Once cured, loose excess is brushed or vacuumed off (and re-used if clean and dry), then a final sealing coat of Nitoflor FC is applied. The grain should never be thrown across the surface, as that scours the film and creates ridges.
Are the grains safe for food and chemical environments?
Yes. The grains are chemically inert, non-hazardous and non-flammable, so they suit food, dairy, pharmaceutical and chemical areas. The overall chemical and hygiene performance of the floor is determined by the Nitoflor coating used with them; always refer to the relevant Material Safety Data Sheet.
Can the texture wear smooth over time?
Because the aggregate is hard-wearing and abrasion-resistant, the texture holds up far better than an unfilled resin floor under heavy or wheeled traffic. However, like any floor it will eventually wear in high-use lanes and can be re-coated with a fresh broadcast layer as part of routine maintenance to restore slip resistance.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor Anti Slip Grains

Nitoflor Anti Slip Grains sit firmly within Fosroc’s Nitoflor flooring ecosystem rather than competing as a standalone product — they are the texturing partner to coatings like Nitoflor FC150, the self-smoothing Nitoflor SL toppings and the PU-cement Nitoflor PU200/PU600 systems, typically over a Nitoprime/Nitoflor primer and sealed with a Nitoflor FC topcoat. For specifiers, the honest comparison is therefore at system level. Sika offers a directly equivalent approach with broadcast quartz aggregates (e.g. Sika quartz sand) over Sikafloor epoxy and PU systems, and Sika Antislip additives for fine-textured finishes. MBCC / Master Builders Solutions (MBS) provides anti-slip aggregates and broadcast media within its Mastertop and Ucrete flooring ranges, with Ucrete being a particularly strong rival in heavy wet-process and thermal-shock areas. STP (Shalimar Tar Products) and other Indian flooring houses supply comparable epoxy floor systems with quartz broadcast options at competitive price points. Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) is better known for waterproofing than resin flooring, so it is a less direct alternative here. The practical takeaway for Indian projects: if the rest of the floor is being built with Nitoflor, the Nitoflor Anti Slip Grains are the correct, grading-matched choice; if specifying against a Sikafloor or Mastertop/Ucrete system, use that manufacturer’s matched aggregate instead of mixing brands, since grain grading is tuned to each coating. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, can supply the correct grade with its matching Nitoflor primer, coating and sealer as a single specified system.
