What is it?

A 2 mm, flow-applied epoxy floor topping that builds a controlled conductive path to earth, holding surface resistance in the static-dissipative band of 1 x 10^6 to 1 x 10^9 ohms (BS 2050). It is the dissipative variant of the Fosroc Nitoflor SL Conductive/Dissipative system.

Where is it used?

Electronics manufacturing and assembly lines, clean rooms, server and computer rooms, hospital operating theatres, and hazardous dust, solvent or chemical environments where static charge must be safely bled away.

Why use it?

It prevents the build-up and sudden discharge of static electricity that can destroy sensitive electronic components, trigger ignition in flammable atmospheres, or interfere with precision equipment, while also giving a seamless, hygienic, chemical-resistant floor.

How is it applied?

Over a sound, dry, primed concrete or steel substrate: one coat of Nitoprime 25, a dissipative undercoat that forms the earthing layer (with earthing connections), then a 2 mm self-smoothing dissipative topcoat trowel-applied and spiked-roller de-aerated.

About Fosroc Nitoflor Dissipative

Fosroc Nitoflor Dissipative is the static-dissipative member of Fosroc’s Nitoflor SL Conductive/Dissipative range, a high-performance industrial flooring system engineered to control electrostatic discharge (ESD) on factory and facility floors. Chemically it is a solvent-free epoxy system built from blended epoxy resins, curing agents and graded inert aggregates, flow-applied as a self-smoothing topping at a nominal 2 mm thickness. When laid it produces a seamless, smooth, light-reflective and coloured surface that is dense, impervious, easy to clean and resistant to a wide range of chemicals.

What sets a dissipative floor apart from an ordinary epoxy is the deliberate, measured electrical resistance of the finished surface. Static electricity generated by friction, foot traffic, trolleys or process equipment must be drained to earth at a controlled rate, neither so fast that it sparks (as a fully conductive floor might) nor so slow that charge accumulates. Nitoflor Dissipative is formulated to keep the topping plus undercoat within a surface resistance of 1 x 10^6 to 1 x 10^9 ohms when measured to BS 2050:1978 and DIN EN 1081, the recognised window for static-dissipative flooring. The companion conductive grade sits lower at 5 x 10^4 to 1 x 10^6 ohms; Space Arc Engineering can advise which band suits a given specification.

The system is a three-part build-up rather than a single product. A coat of Nitoprime 25 epoxy primer seals and bonds to the substrate; a dissipative undercoat is then applied to create a continuous earthing plane, tied to physical earthing connections placed in consultation with Fosroc; finally the pigmented 2 mm topcoat is poured, spread with a steel trowel or float, and spike-rolled to release entrapped air. Because the undercoat carries the charge to earth, strict adherence to its coverage rate is critical to the final electrical performance, which is why this is a system best installed by trained applicators. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies the full Fosroc Nitoflor Dissipative system across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

The technical insight

The electrical behaviour of Nitoflor Dissipative is built in layers, not in a single coat, and that is the detail specifiers most often miss. The dissipative undercoat is the working earthing layer: its own surface resistance must read approximately 3 x 10^4 to 8 x 10^4 ohms and must be measured and verified before the topcoat goes down, because once buried it cannot be corrected. The 2 mm topcoat then raises the finished system resistance into the target 1 x 10^6 to 1 x 10^9 ohm dissipative band (BS 2050:1978 / DIN EN 1081). Earthing connections must be physically placed and thoroughly covered, and every expansion or movement joint must be bridged with an earthing link so conductivity is continuous across the slab. Because the topping is only 2 mm, the substrate must be even-textured, dry (moisture below 5 percent on a fully cured 28-day slab) and protected by a damp-proof membrane to avoid osmotic blistering. The system is solvent-free at 100 percent volume solids; adding solvent during mixing will compromise both the cure and the electrical properties, so forced-action or slow-speed paddle mixing of fully proportioned base and hardener is mandatory.

Where it is used

  • Static-dissipative flooring for electronics manufacturing and PCB assembly halls
  • Clean rooms, server rooms and computer/data-processing rooms
  • Hospital operating theatres and critical-care suites requiring static control
  • Solvent, paint and chemical stores with low-flash-point materials
  • Ammunition depots, explosive handling and ordnance facilities
  • Pharmaceutical and precision-instrument production areas
  • Telecom and ATC (air traffic control) equipment rooms
  • Hazardous dust environments where charge build-up is an ignition risk

Key advantages

  • Controlled static dissipation: provides an effective, measured passage of static electricity to earth in the 1 x 10^6 – 1 x 10^9 ohm band
  • Seamless and hygienic: dense, impervious, jointless surface that is easy to clean and suits clean-room standards
  • Durable: good abrasion resistance and high mechanical strength (50 N/mm2 compressive)
  • Chemical resistant: withstands petrol, oils, fats, detergents, some aliphatic hydrocarbons and dilute alkalis
  • Aesthetic: available in a range of colours with a smooth, light-reflective finish
  • Solvent-free, 100% volume solids epoxy with low odour during cure
  • CPRI-certified electrical performance, giving specifiers third-party assurance

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a DIY product: electrical performance depends on correct undercoat coverage and earthing, so trained applicators are essential
  • Must not be applied below 15 degrees C ambient/substrate temperature
  • Must not be applied to asphalt, unmodified sand/cement screeds, PVC tiles or vinyl substrates
  • Requires a sound, dry substrate (moisture below 5%, minimum 28-day cure) protected by a damp-proof membrane
  • At only 2 mm, it will telegraph major substrate unevenness; substrate must be repaired and level
  • Continuous earthing connections and joint bridging are mandatory, adding to programme and cost
  • Temperature resistance is limited to about 80 degrees C; not for high-heat process floors
  • Chemical resistance is good but not universal; aggressive acids/solvents need Fosroc confirmation

Selection & best practice

Treat the floor as an electrical system, not just a coating. Verify the slab is at least 28 days old with moisture below 5 percent (checked with a thermo-hygrometer) over a damp-proof membrane, and mechanically prepare it to a sound, even, contamination-free profile. Prime with Nitoprime 25 (two coats on porous floors) and let it go tack-free. Apply the dissipative undercoat strictly to the 6.7-7.8 m2/litre rate, fully encapsulating the earthing connections, then measure undercoat resistance (target ~3 x 10^4 – 8 x 10^4 ohms) before proceeding. Pour the 2 mm topcoat, spread by trowel and spike-roll to de-aerate. Keep ambient temperature above 15 degrees C, never add solvent, and allow 24 hours before foot traffic and 5 days before full traffic. Always commission the finished floor with a calibrated surface-resistance test to BS 2050 / DIN EN 1081 and retain the readings for QA records.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nitoflor Dissipative the same as Nitoflor SL Dissipative?
Yes. Nitoflor Dissipative is the static-dissipative grade within Fosroc’s Nitoflor SL Conductive/Dissipative system. It uses the same Nitoprime 25 primer, a dissipative undercoat and a 2 mm dissipative topcoat, and is tuned to a surface resistance of 1 x 10^6 to 1 x 10^9 ohms.
What is the difference between dissipative and conductive Nitoflor?
They differ in target surface resistance. The conductive grade reads 5 x 10^4 to 1 x 10^6 ohms (charge drains very fast to earth), while the dissipative grade reads 1 x 10^6 to 1 x 10^9 ohms (charge drains in a slower, controlled manner). Dissipative is chosen where you want to avoid both charge build-up and rapid-discharge sparking; conductive is specified where the standard demands the lower band.
How thick is the finished floor and how much does it cover?
The topcoat is applied at a nominal 2 mm. One 15-litre topcoat pack covers about 7.5 m2 at 2 mm. The dissipative undercoat covers 6.7-7.8 m2 per litre and Nitoprime 25 primer 5.5-6.5 m2 per litre. Hitting the undercoat coverage exactly is critical because it sets the floor’s electrical performance.
What standards and certification does it meet?
Surface resistance is measured to BS 2050:1978 and DIN EN 1081, static decay to Federal Test Method 101B, Method 4046, and the Fosroc India system carries Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) certification for charge dissipation to earth.
What substrates is it suitable for, and what preparation is needed?
It is applied over sound concrete or steel. Concrete should be at least 28 days old, have a moisture content below 5 percent, sit over a damp-proof membrane, and be mechanically prepared free of laitance, oil and contamination. It must not be applied to asphalt, unmodified sand/cement screeds, PVC tiles or vinyl, and never below 15 degrees C.
How soon can the floor be used after installation?
At around 30 degrees C the floor takes foot traffic after about 24 hours and full traffic after 5 days. Pot life of the mixed material is about 30 minutes, so it must be worked promptly. Lower temperatures extend these times.
Can Space Arc Engineering supply and install it in India?
Yes. Space Arc Engineering is an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator covering Delhi NCR and Pan-India. We supply the complete system (Nitoprime 25, dissipative undercoat and topcoat), install with trained crews, set the earthing connections, and commission the floor with surface-resistance testing to BS 2050 / DIN EN 1081.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor Dissipative

Nitoflor Dissipative sits in the ESD-control tier of Fosroc’s industrial flooring portfolio, between standard self-levelling epoxies (such as Nitoflor SL2000 / FC range) and the fully conductive Nitoflor SL Conductive grade. Within the Fosroc family it pairs naturally with Nitoprime 25 (primer), Nitomortar S (substrate repair) and Nitoflor Sol (tool cleaner), and where polyurethane chemistry or higher thermal/chemical duty is needed Fosroc also offers Nitoflor EPU Conductive & Dissipative and the newer Nitoflor SL3000 U ESD. For consultants comparing brands, credible static-dissipative alternatives in the Indian market include Sika (Sikafloor ESD/conductive systems such as Sikafloor-235 ESD / Sikafloor-2350 ESD), MBCC/Master Builders Solutions (formerly BASF, Mastertop ESD ranges), STP, and broadly positioned waterproofing/flooring brands such as Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) for general epoxy floors, though Dr. Fixit is less focused on certified ESD systems. The honest positioning: Nitoflor Dissipative is a proven, CPRI-certified, well-supported choice for dissipative requirements in electronics, defence and healthcare, but it is a specialist installed system, not a general-purpose floor coating. Specify it where measured static control to BS 2050 / DIN EN 1081 is a genuine requirement; for ordinary durable factory floors a standard Nitoflor self-levelling epoxy is more economical. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, can advise on the right grade and provide commissioning test data.
