What is it?

A two-component, solvent-free epoxy liquid that is roller- or squeegee-applied directly onto cementitious floors to form a surface damp-proof membrane and suppress residual construction moisture, accommodating substrate hygrometer readings up to 98% RH.

Where is it used?

Concrete floor slabs that lack an effective below-slab DPM, or that still hold high construction moisture, before laying vinyl, carpet, wood, screeds or resin floor finishes in warehouses, factories, retail, hospitals, schools and commercial fit-outs.

Why use it?

It removes the conventional drying-out wait, lets moisture-sensitive finishes be laid early without blistering or adhesive failure, and bonds reliably even to damp concrete, protecting both the programme and the finished floor.

How is it applied?

Applied over a clean, sound, mechanically prepared slab in one coat (250 microns) as a damp-tolerant primer, or two cross-applied coats in contrasting colours (500 microns) for a full surface DPM, then overcoated within the recoat window.

About Fosroc Nitoflor DPM

Fosroc Nitoflor DPM is a two-component, solvent-free, liquid-applied epoxy surface damp-proof membrane and residual-moisture suppressant. It belongs to the Nitoflor industrial flooring range and is engineered to solve one of the most common and expensive problems on Indian construction sites: a concrete slab that simply has not dried enough to receive its finished floor on schedule. Rather than waiting weeks or months for residual construction water to leave a slab, the contractor coats the surface with Nitoflor DPM, which seals the moisture in and presents a sound, dry, overcoatable surface. The product is supplied as a base and hardener in pre-weighed packs that are simply combined on site, mixed with a slow-speed drill, and applied by roller or rubber squeegee. It is available in oxide red and oxide yellow, the two colours being a deliberate visual aid so that the applicator can clearly see full, gap-free coverage and, in a two-coat system, confirm that the second coat fully crosses the first. Because it is solvent-free, it is low-odour and suited to enclosed or occupied environments where solvent-borne coatings would be impractical. In short, Nitoflor DPM is the bridge between a freshly cast or persistently damp slab and the floor finish the client actually wants, used either as a standalone surface DPM or as a damp-tolerant primer beneath Fosroc’s own resin flooring systems.

The technical insight

The defining capability of Nitoflor DPM is its tolerance of substrate hygrometer readings up to 98% relative humidity. Conventional resin primers and most floor-covering adhesives demand a slab below roughly 75% RH (or sub-screed moisture well under 5%), which on a thick power-floated slab in a humid Indian climate can mean waiting one to two months or longer per 25 mm of thickness. Nitoflor DPM works by forming a continuous, cured epoxy film that physically interrupts the upward passage of moisture vapour from the slab into the new finish, so the residual water that would otherwise osmotically push adhesives off or blister a resin coat is held back. As a damp-tolerant primer a single 250-micron coat is used; for a full surface damp-proof membrane two coats are applied at right angles to each other (90 degrees) in contrasting colours to a combined nominal 500 microns, the cross-application and colour change being the practical guarantee of pinhole-free continuity. Coverage runs at approximately 4 m2/kg per coat at 250 microns, or about 2 m2/kg for the 500-micron two-coat system, before allowing for substrate texture and porosity. Pot life is short, around 25 minutes at 20 degrees C, so the mixed material must be worked promptly, and the recoat/overcoat interval is in the order of 12 hours at 20 degrees C. Application temperature should be at least 5 degrees C and the substrate must be kept at least 3 degrees C above the dew point during application and cure. Surface preparation is critical: the slab should be mechanically prepared (captive-shot blasting or diamond grinding) to a sound, laitance-free, open-textured profile of adequate strength before the membrane goes down.

Where it is used

  • Surface damp-proof membrane on ground-bearing slabs cast without an effective below-slab DPM
  • Suppressing residual construction moisture so floor finishes can be laid early, ahead of natural drying
  • Damp-tolerant primer beneath Fosroc Nitoflor resin and self-levelling floor systems
  • Pre-treatment of slabs before vinyl, sheet, LVT, carpet and resilient floor coverings
  • Pre-treatment before timber, laminate and engineered-wood overlays sensitive to slab moisture
  • Moisture control under cementitious smoothing and levelling compounds in fit-out works
  • Remedial treatment of existing floors exhibiting rising residual moisture or adhesive failure
  • Fast-track flooring in warehouses, factories, retail units, hospitals, schools and offices

Key advantages

  • Accommodates substrate readings up to 98% RH, far above the limit of ordinary primers
  • Allows early overlaying with vinyl, carpet, wood and resin without the conventional drying-out wait
  • Solvent-free and low-odour, suitable for enclosed, sensitive or partially occupied interiors
  • Excellent adhesion to damp concrete, reducing the risk of blistering and bond failure
  • Two contrasting colours (oxide red, oxide yellow) give a clear visual check on coverage and coat continuity
  • Doubles as a damp-tolerant primer for Fosroc resin flooring, simplifying the build-up
  • Two-component pre-weighed packs remove site batching errors and speed up mixing
  • Protects programme and budget by collapsing slab-drying time on moisture-critical projects

Limitations & considerations

  • Not suitable for use over under-floor heating systems
  • Short pot life of about 25 minutes at 20 degrees C demands prompt application of mixed material
  • Requires thorough mechanical surface preparation; will not bond reliably over laitance, contamination or weak surfaces
  • Not designed as a wearing surface on its own; it must be overlaid with a finish or resin system
  • Application below 5 degrees C, or with the substrate within 3 degrees C of the dew point, is not permitted
  • Colours are functional, not decorative or colour-fast; final appearance depends on the overlay
  • Performance depends on correct combined film thickness; under-application compromises the moisture barrier
  • Substrate must be structurally sound and of adequate strength; it does not strengthen weak concrete

Selection & best practice

Begin with a moisture survey: take hygrometer (RH) readings across the slab and confirm they fall within the product’s working range and that the slab is structurally sound. Mechanically prepare the surface by captive-shot blasting or diamond grinding to remove laitance, curing compounds and contamination, leaving an open, sound profile; vacuum thoroughly. Mix the full base and hardener packs together with a slow-speed drill until uniform in colour, and never split packs by eye. For a damp-tolerant primer apply one coat at 250 microns; for a full surface DPM apply the second coat at 90 degrees to the first in the contrasting colour so any missed areas show immediately, targeting the combined 500 microns. Respect the short pot life by mixing only what can be applied in roughly 25 minutes and keep a wet edge. Maintain substrate and ambient temperature at or above 5 degrees C and at least 3 degrees C above the dew point throughout application and cure, and overcoat within the recommended interval (about 12 hours at 20 degrees C) so the overlay or resin system bonds properly. Confirm the chosen floor finish, adhesive and any levelling compound are compatible with an epoxy DPM, and do not specify it where under-floor heating is present. Always work to the current India-region technical data sheet and request a method statement from Space Arc Engineering before starting.

Industry use cases

Warehousing & logistics

Fast-track handover of large floor-plate distribution centres where the slab is still green; Nitoflor DPM lets resin or resilient finishes go down without waiting out the full natural drying period.

Healthcare

Hospitals and laboratories laying vinyl or seamless resin floors over damp slabs need a low-odour, solvent-free moisture barrier that protects hygienic finishes from blistering and adhesive failure.

Retail & commercial fit-out

Tight retail and office fit-out programmes use it under LVT, carpet and levelling compounds so that moisture-sensitive coverings can be installed on schedule in newly cast or refurbished units.

Manufacturing & industrial

Factory floors receiving Fosroc Nitoflor resin systems use it as a damp-tolerant primer, combining moisture suppression and priming in a single product within the flooring build-up.

Education & institutional

Schools, colleges and public buildings with persistent rising residual moisture in older slabs apply it as a remedial surface DPM before re-covering floors during refurbishment.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoflor DPM an epoxy product?
Yes. It is a two-component, solvent-free epoxy resin liquid that cures to a continuous film acting as a surface damp-proof membrane and residual-moisture suppressant on concrete floors.
What moisture level can Nitoflor DPM handle?
It can accommodate substrate hygrometer readings up to 98% relative humidity, well above the roughly 75% RH limit that conventional floor primers and covering adhesives typically require, which is what allows early overlaying.
How many coats do I need and what is the coverage?
As a damp-tolerant primer one coat at 250 microns is used (approx. 4 m2/kg). For a full surface DPM, apply two coats at right angles in contrasting colours to a combined 500 microns (approx. 2 m2/kg). Actual coverage depends on substrate texture and porosity.
Why is it supplied in red and yellow?
The two colours are a functional application aid, not decorative. Using a different colour for each coat and the resin overlay lets the applicator clearly confirm full, pinhole-free coverage and that the second coat fully crosses the first.
How soon can I lay the floor finish after applying it?
Once the membrane has cured and you are within the recommended overcoat window (around 12 hours at 20 degrees C, temperature-dependent), the slab can receive vinyl, carpet, wood, levelling compounds or Fosroc resin systems, subject to those products’ own compatibility and bonding requirements.
Can it be used over under-floor heating?
No. Fosroc states Nitoflor DPM is not suitable for use over under-floor heating systems. For heated slabs, discuss alternative moisture-control approaches with Space Arc Engineering and Fosroc technical services.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor DPM

Within the Fosroc flooring portfolio, Nitoflor DPM is the dedicated surface damp-proof membrane that pairs naturally with the rest of the Nitoflor resin range: it acts as the damp-tolerant primer beneath systems such as the Nitoflor FC and self-smoothing/screed grades, while general epoxy priming on dry slabs is handled by Nitoprime products and slab repair by the Renderoc range. There is also a closely related cementitious-modified variant, Nitoflor DPM CEM, for situations where a cement-based moisture suppressant is preferred, so specifiers should confirm which grade suits their slab and finish. Honestly assessed, Nitoflor DPM competes in a well-served epoxy surface-DPM category: credible alternatives that Indian consultants and contractors will recognise include Sika’s epoxy moisture-barrier primers (the Sikafloor EpoCem and epoxy DPM family), and high-RH epoxy DPMs from MBCC/Master Builders Solutions (formerly BASF, the MasterTop/MasterSeal lines). For lighter-duty or waterproofing-led contexts, Pidilite Dr. Fixit and STP (Shalimar) offer floor and damp-control products, though those are generally positioned differently from a true high-RH epoxy surface DPM. The right choice usually comes down to the verified slab RH, the floor finish to be laid, programme constraints and approved-vendor lists. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator covering Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can supply genuine Nitoflor DPM, advise on the correct grade and build-up against your finish, and provide method statements and the current India-region technical data sheet for specification.
