What is it?

A two-component (powder plus polymer liquid) cementitious undercoat that forms the base or build-up layer of the Fosroc Nitoflor Deco decorative coating system, applied in thicknesses up to 5 mm.

Where is it used?

Indoor decorative floors and surfaces in showrooms, retail, hospitality, residential and commercial fit-outs; a waterproof version is used in pools and fountains.

Why use it?

It bonds directly to concrete, mortar and tiles without a separate primer, levels and reinstates the surface, and gives the Nitoflor Deco topcoat a sound, uniform substrate for a defect-free finish.

How is it applied?

Mixed on site, then trowel- or float-applied over a clean, sound substrate to the required build-up thickness, allowed to cure, and overcoated with Nitoflor Deco and a protective sealer.

About Fosroc Nitoflor Deco BS

Fosroc Nitoflor Deco BS is the base-coat component of the Nitoflor Deco decorative flooring system. Where the visible Nitoflor Deco layer delivers the colour and the finish, Deco BS does the structural groundwork beneath it. It is supplied as a two-component, polymer-modified cementitious material: a cement-based powder blended with a liquid polymer, mixed on site to a workable trowel or float consistency. Cured, it forms a hard, well-adhered mineral layer that levels the substrate, makes good minor irregularities, and presents a consistent surface for the decorative coat to follow.

The standout practical feature for contractors is that Deco BS needs no separate priming step. It is formulated to develop strong adhesion directly onto a range of construction substrates, including concrete, cementitious screed and mortar, and even existing ceramic tiles. That last point matters for refurbishment work in India, where overlaying tired tiled floors without ripping them out is a common, cost-driven requirement. Being a base layer, it can be built up to thicknesses of up to 5 mm, which gives applicators room to absorb falls, level out worn surfaces and re-profile a floor before the thin decorative layer goes on.

The system is designed primarily for interior decorative work, the kind of seamless, designer cement-look floors and wall finishes increasingly specified in retail outlets, cafes and restaurants, hotel lobbies, offices and premium residences. Fosroc also offers a waterproof version of the Deco BS chemistry for wet and immersed environments such as swimming pools and fountains, where the base layer doubles as part of the waterproofing build-up. For Space Arc Engineering’s customers, Deco BS is best understood not as a stand-alone product but as one disciplined step in a layered build: a sound substrate, the Deco BS undercoat, the Nitoflor Deco coloured decorative coat, and a protective sealer to close the system and make it serviceable.

The technical insight

Nitoflor Deco BS belongs to the polymer-modified cementitious (PMC) family rather than the resin (epoxy or PU) families that dominate heavy industrial flooring. That distinction drives where it is appropriate. The liquid polymer co-reacts with and disperses through the hydrating cement matrix, raising flexural strength, adhesion and crack resistance well above a plain sand-cement mortar, while keeping the layer breathable and tolerant of residual substrate moisture in a way that solvent-free epoxies are not. Because it cures by cement hydration, it bonds tenaciously to mineral substrates, which is exactly why no primer is required, the fresh material keys mechanically and chemically into concrete, screed or scarified tile. The up-to-5 mm build is the working envelope of a base layer: thick enough to level and re-profile, thin enough to remain dimensionally stable and avoid the shrinkage and curling risk of a deep sand-cement topping. The decorative Nitoflor Deco coat applied over it is far thinner (the published guide for Deco is around 2.0 kg/m2 per mm, applied up to roughly 2 mm), so the quality of the Deco BS base directly governs the flatness and freedom-from-defects of the visible finish. Treat Deco BS as the load-spreading, bond-establishing, level-correcting layer and the resin or sealer topcoat as the wearing and aesthetic surface.

Where it is used

  • Base/levelling layer beneath Nitoflor Deco decorative cementitious finishes in interior fit-outs
  • Overlaying and reinstating existing ceramic-tiled floors without removal during refurbishment
  • Re-profiling and making good worn or uneven concrete and screed before a decorative topcoat
  • Seamless cement-look feature floors in retail showrooms, cafes, restaurants and hotel lobbies
  • Decorative floor and wall finishes in offices, residences and commercial interiors
  • Waterproof build-up layer (waterproof version) in swimming pools and fountains

Key advantages

  • No separate primer required, reducing material steps and saving time on site
  • Excellent adhesion to multiple substrates including concrete, mortar and existing tiles
  • Builds up to 5 mm to level, re-profile and make good uneven surfaces
  • Polymer modification gives higher strength, bond and crack resistance than plain sand-cement
  • Provides a uniform, sound base that improves the appearance and durability of the Nitoflor Deco topcoat
  • Waterproof version available for wet and immersed applications such as pools and fountains
  • Cement-based and breathable, more tolerant of residual substrate moisture than solvent-free epoxies

Limitations & considerations

  • A base/undercoat layer only, it is not the finished wearing surface and must be overcoated with Nitoflor Deco and a sealer
  • Specified for indoor decorative use (standard version), not for heavy-traffic industrial or chemical-attack floors, use resin Nitoflor systems there
  • Performance depends heavily on substrate preparation, soundness and correct site mixing
  • Being cement-based, it needs adequate moist curing and protection from rapid drying in hot Indian site conditions
  • Chemical and abrasion resistance comes from the decorative coat and sealer above, not from Deco BS itself
  • Published open-source data for exact coverage, pot life, cure schedule and pack sizes is limited, always confirm against the current India TDS before ordering

Selection & best practice

Treat Deco BS as one step in a system, never as a finish in itself. Prepare the substrate properly: it must be sound, clean and free of laitance, oil, curing compounds and loose tile glazing, mechanically scarify or grind smooth or tiled surfaces to create a key. Confirm substrate moisture is within the limits given in the current Fosroc India TDS. Mix only full units at the specified powder-to-liquid ratio using a slow-speed paddle to a lump-free consistency, do not split bags or add water. Apply by trowel or float to the planned build-up thickness within the working time, keeping total base build within the 5 mm envelope; build deeper sections in passes if required. Cure and protect the base layer fully before overcoating with Nitoflor Deco and the protective sealer, and never skip the sealer, it is what makes the decorative system cleanable and serviceable. Always order and apply against the latest product-specific Technical Data Sheet for the Indian market, which Space Arc Engineering can supply with the material.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nitoflor Deco BS an epoxy floor coating?
No. It is a two-component cementitious (polymer-modified cement) product, not an epoxy or polyurethane. It uses cement hydration to bond and cure, which is why it adheres to mineral substrates without a primer and tolerates residual substrate moisture better than solvent-free epoxies. For epoxy floors, look at Fosroc’s Nitoflor FC130/FC150 or self-levelling epoxy systems instead.
What does the BS in Nitoflor Deco BS mean and how is it different from Nitoflor Deco?
Deco BS is the base/undercoat layer of the system, while Nitoflor Deco is the coloured decorative topcoat applied over it. Deco BS levels and bonds to the substrate (up to 5 mm build), and Nitoflor Deco delivers the visible finish and colour. They are designed to be used together, not as alternatives.
Do I need a primer before applying Deco BS?
No. A key feature of Deco BS is that it develops strong adhesion directly onto concrete, mortar and tiles without a separate primer, provided the substrate is properly prepared, sound, clean and mechanically keyed where needed.
Can it be applied over existing tiles?
Yes. Deco BS is formulated to bond to ceramic tiles among other substrates, which makes it well suited to refurbishment where you want to overlay an old tiled floor rather than demolish it. The tile surface should be sound, degreased and abraded to create a key.
What is the maximum thickness I can build with Deco BS?
It is designed as a base layer applied in thicknesses up to 5 mm, which is enough to level, re-profile and make good most worn or uneven substrates before the thin decorative Nitoflor Deco coat goes on.
Is it suitable for heavy industrial or chemical-exposed floors?
Not on its own. Deco BS is a decorative-system base coat for interior use. For warehouses, factories and chemical-contact areas you need resin-based industrial floors, Fosroc Nitoflor epoxy or polyurethane systems, or comparable systems from Sika, MBCC/Master Builders Solutions or STP. Always match the product to the service condition.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor Deco BS

Nitoflor Deco BS sits firmly in the decorative cementitious flooring niche, not the heavy-duty industrial category, and it should be specified accordingly. Within the Fosroc range it is one layer of a system: Deco BS as the undercoat, Nitoflor Deco as the coloured decorative coat, and a protective sealer on top. It is not a substitute for Fosroc’s resin floors such as Nitoflor FC130 and FC150 (epoxy coatings), Nitoflor self-levelling epoxies, or the Nitoflor Floorcrete/PU polyurethane-cement screeds used in industrial and food-processing environments, those handle traffic, impact and chemical attack that a decorative system is not built for. Compared with the wider market, Deco BS competes in the same microcement/decorative-overlay space served by Sika’s decorative and microtopping ranges and Master Builders Solutions (MBS, formerly MBCC/BASF) decorative systems; for waterproofing-led tasks contractors may also weigh Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP (Sika-owned in India) waterproofing build-ups, though those are positioned around waterproofing rather than a designer decorative finish. The honest position: choose Nitoflor Deco BS when the goal is a seamless, decorative cement-look interior floor or feature surface, especially over existing tiles, and you want a primer-free, single-source Fosroc system. Choose a resin Nitoflor or an equivalent industrial system when wear, chemicals or wet processing dominate. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can supply the current India TDS, confirm the right system build for your substrate and use, and quote the full Deco system rather than the base coat in isolation.
