BrandFosrocCategoryIndustrial FlooringFormA solvent-free, three-component coal-tar modified epoxy slurry (resin base, amine hardener and graded mineral filler)…

What is it?

A solvent-free, three-component coal-tar modified epoxy slurry (resin base, amine hardener and graded mineral filler) that is poured, trowelled and then blinded with a hard silica/aggregate dressing to form an anti-skid wearing course.

Where is it used?

Bridge decks and foot/road bridges, RO-RO linkspans, loading jetties, helicopter and ship decks, airfield aprons, car parks, walkways and wet-work industrial floors across India.

Why use it?

It delivers a lightweight yet hard-wearing, flexible, chemically resistant and water-impermeable surface that stays non-slip even when wet, while adding minimal dead load to bridges and overlaid structures.

How is it applied?

Prepare and prime the substrate with Nitoprime 25, machine-mix the two liquids with the filler (15:15:70), pour and spread to design thickness in 2-3 m lanes, then broadcast aggregate into the wet slurry to saturation.

About Fosroc Nitoflor ET Slurry

Fosroc Nitoflor ET Slurry (formerly marketed as Fosroc Cicol ET Slurry) is a heavy-duty, anti-skid wearing course used wherever a thin, lightweight surfacing must survive constant traffic, water and aggressive chemicals. It is a solvent-free, three-component product built on a coal-tar modified epoxy resin, an amine curing agent and chemically inert graded mineral fillers. Mixed on site, these components form a fluid black slurry that is poured onto a primed substrate and then blinded with a selected hard-wearing silica-sand aggregate while still wet. The cured result is a flexible, durable, water-impermeable layer with a coarse non-slip texture. Because the base slurry is black, the finished colour and the degree of grip are governed by the dressing aggregate that is broadcast onto it. The slurry can be laid on steel, concrete, timber, aluminium and asphalt, which makes it unusually versatile for mixed-substrate infrastructure projects. For Indian contractors and consultants, ET Slurry sits in the family of Fosroc thin-bonded surfacings that are specified when a conventional epoxy screed would be too heavy or too brittle – particularly on bridge decks and steel structures where added dead load and movement are real engineering constraints. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

The technical insight

The defining technical trait of Nitoflor ET Slurry is the combination of coal-tar modification and a 15:15:70 resin-to-filler mix ratio. The coal-tar chemistry contributes water impermeability, chemical and corrosion resistance and a measure of flexibility, while the heavy mineral filler loading keeps the system at 100% volume solids and gives a placed density of roughly 1.78-1.85 g/cc – lightweight compared with a cementitious screed of equivalent durability. Mechanical performance is genuinely structural for a thin surfacing: tested to BS 6319, the system develops a compressive strength of about 35 N/mm2 (Part 2), tensile strength of around 8 N/mm2 (Part 7) and flexural strength of approximately 15 N/mm2 (Part 3) in the regional (India/Gulf) specification; the global heritage datasheet quotes higher figures (tensile 10 N/mm2, flexural 34 N/mm2, Shore-D 70). The flexural and tensile capacity is what lets a 3-4.5 mm layer accommodate deck movement without cracking. The anti-skid performance comes from the dressing aggregate, which has a Mohs hardness of about 9 (diamond being 10), producing a wet skid-resistance value above 90. Maximum service temperature is around 80 deg C. Designers should treat thickness as a function of traffic: typically 3.0-3.5 mm for light traffic and 4.0-4.5 mm for heavy traffic, with the finished surface including dressing sitting in the 5-8 mm range.

Where it is used

  • Anti-skid wearing course on concrete and steel bridge decks, foot bridges and flyovers
  • Waterproofing membrane laid beneath an asphalt layer on bridges and elevated structures
  • RO-RO linkspans, loading jetties and cargo-handling areas at ports
  • Helicopter decks, helipads and ship decks requiring non-slip safety surfacing
  • Airfield aprons, taxiway shoulders and aircraft refuelling zones exposed to jet fuel
  • Multi-storey and surface car park decks, ramps and access walkways
  • Wet-process and chemical-exposure industrial floors, work platforms and gantries

Key advantages

  • Lightweight – adds minimal dead load, a key advantage when overlaying existing bridges and old structures
  • Hard-wearing and abrasion-resistant under continuous foot and vehicular traffic
  • Flexible, with strong flexural and tensile strength to accommodate deck movement in a thin layer
  • Non-slip even when wet, with a wet skid-resistance value above 90 from the broadcast aggregate
  • Resistant to petrol, diesel, jet and lubricating fuels, de-icing salts and dilute mineral acids and alkalis
  • Solvent-free and 100% volume solids, so there is no shrinkage from solvent loss
  • Bonds to multiple substrates – steel, concrete, timber, aluminium and asphalt
  • Acts as a chemically corrosion-resistant, water-impermeable wearing course in one system

Limitations & considerations

  • Contains coal tar, which carries handling, odour and health-and-safety considerations and may be restricted on some food-contact or potable-water projects
  • Black base colour limits aesthetics; final appearance depends entirely on the dressing aggregate, so it is not a decorative finish
  • Short pot life of about 30 minutes means small batches and disciplined site logistics are essential
  • Application is temperature-sensitive – recommended range is roughly 15 deg C to 35 deg C with a minimum ambient of 15 deg C, which can constrain cold-season or high-humidity work
  • Steel substrates must be blast-cleaned to SA 2½ and coated quickly, demanding skilled surface preparation
  • Not a self-levelling decorative epoxy floor – it is a specialist anti-skid and waterproofing surfacing, not a clean-room or showroom finish
  • No thinners or solvents may be added to adjust workability, so consistency must be managed by temperature and timing

Selection & best practice

Begin with correct substrate preparation: blast-clean steel to a minimum SA 2½ standard and apply the slurry as quickly as possible, re-blasting if the surface deteriorates; for concrete, mechanically scarify to remove laitance and loose particles and ensure the surface is sound and dry. Prime with Nitoprime 25 by brush or lambswool roller at about 5.5-6.5 m2 per litre, and lay the slurry while the primer is still tacky to guarantee a chemical bond. Mix the two liquid components first with a paddle on a heavy-duty, slow-speed drill, then add filler to form the slurry consistency – do not add thinners or solvent. Work in 2-3 m wide lanes, masking off edges, spread with a steel trowel or squeegee to the design thickness gauge, and immediately broadcast aggregate vertically to saturation until no wet slurry shows; throwing aggregate at an angle causes ridges. Remove masking tape before the coating sets, and once cured sweep off excess aggregate. Respect the pot life and only batch what can be placed in the working window. Store material below 35 deg C and use within the 12-month shelf life, and always confirm current region-specific figures against the latest Fosroc TDS for the project location.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoflor ET Slurry a real Fosroc product?
Yes. It is a current Fosroc product (formerly sold as Fosroc Cicol ET Slurry) with an official datasheet on fosroc.com. It is a solvent-free, three-component coal-tar modified epoxy anti-skid wearing course. A related variant, Nitoflor ET Slurry R, is also listed by Fosroc.
What surfaces can Nitoflor ET Slurry be applied to?
It bonds to steel, concrete, timber, aluminium and asphalt. Steel must be blast-cleaned to a minimum SA 2½ standard and surfaced quickly, while concrete must be mechanically scarified to remove laitance and loose particles and be sound and dry before priming with Nitoprime 25.
How thick should the slurry be applied?
Thickness is matched to traffic. Typical design is 3.0-3.5 mm for light traffic and 4.0-4.5 mm for heavy traffic. With the broadcast aggregate dressing, the total finished surface usually falls between 5 and 8 mm depending on the system selected.
What primer and coverage should I plan for?
Prime with Nitoprime 25 applied by brush or lambswool roller at about 5.5-6.5 m2 per litre, supplied in 1 and 4 litre packs. The slurry is laid while the primer is still tacky. Slurry coverage runs roughly 2.0-3.5 m2 per pack depending on the chosen thickness; always do a project-specific take-off from the current TDS.
What chemicals does the cured system resist?
After full cure it resists petrol, kerosene, diesel, aircraft and lubricating fuels, de-icing salts, dilute mineral acids and alkalis, cleaning compositions and 10% urea solution, based on three-month continuous immersion testing at 30 deg C. For continuous aggressive immersion, confirm the specific exposure with Fosroc.
Does it contain coal tar, and does that limit where it can be used?
Yes – it is a coal-tar modified epoxy, which is part of why it is so chemically resistant and waterproof. Coal-tar systems carry handling and health-and-safety requirements (protective clothing, gloves, eye protection) and are generally avoided on potable-water or food-contact projects. For those, a coal-tar-free Fosroc flooring system should be specified instead.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor ET Slurry

Nitoflor ET Slurry occupies a specialist niche: it is the coal-tar epoxy anti-skid and waterproofing surfacing in Fosroc’s flooring range, chosen for bridge decks, marine and aviation structures rather than as a general workshop or showroom floor. Within the Fosroc portfolio it complements the broader Nitoflor line – Nitoflor NT Slurry and Nitoflor ET Slurry R are close relatives, while Nitoflor ET Screed offers a heavier screeded build-up, and decorative or chemically clean environments are better served by clear-pigmented systems such as Nitoflor FC150 or self-levelling epoxies; bonding and patch repair are typically handled with Nitobond and Nitomortar products. Where a coal-tar system is unsuitable – for example potable-water, food or aesthetic interiors – credible alternatives include Sika’s bridge-deck and anti-skid waterproofing systems (e.g. Sikafloor and Sikalastic ranges), MBS (MYK Arment) industrial flooring and waterproofing products, STP Limited deck and waterproofing membranes, and, for lighter-duty or repair-grade needs, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) coatings – though Dr. Fixit is generally positioned more for waterproofing than for heavy trafficked anti-skid decks. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator in Delhi NCR and Pan-India, can help consultants and contractors confirm the correct Fosroc system, verify current region-specific specifications and arrange supply and skilled application.
