BrandFosrocCategoryIndustrial FlooringFormA solvent-free epoxy grouting compound that forms part of the Fosroc Nitoflor ETerrazzo decorative flooring system…

What is it?

A solvent-free epoxy grouting compound that forms part of the Fosroc Nitoflor ETerrazzo decorative flooring system. It is colour-matched to the terrazzo matrix and is applied after grinding to seal the surface and fill the pores and pinholes left in the ground epoxy-terrazzo screed.

Where is it used?

Internal high-traffic, high-aesthetic floors finished with Nitoflor ETerrazzo – airport lounges, railway terminals, hospitals, shopping malls, convention centres, educational institutions and prestige commercial or retail interiors.

Why use it?

Once an epoxy terrazzo screed is ground flat, the cut aggregate and binder leave microscopic voids. The grout fills these voids so the polished surface is dense, hygienic and free of pinholes – a step that cannot be skipped without compromising the finish and chemical resistance.

How is it applied?

After rough and medium grinding, the washed and vacuumed surface is grouted with the mixed compound using a spring-steel trowel or non-marking squeegee, worked into all voids, excess removed, and left to cure overnight before re-grinding, polishing and sealing.

About Fosroc Nitoflor ETerrazzo Grout

Fosroc Nitoflor ETerrazzo Grout is not a stand-alone floor product – it is a dedicated grouting compound within the Fosroc Nitoflor ETerrazzo system, a solvent-free epoxy terrazzo flooring package. The complete system comprises a Nitoprime 31 primer, an optional crack-bridging membrane (Nitoflor ETerrazzo Membrane plus Fiberglass mesh), the Nitoflor ETerrazzo terrazzo screed itself, the Nitoflor ETerrazzo Grout, a Nitoflor ETerrazzo Sealer top coat, and metal divider strips in zinc, aluminium or brass. Each component has a single job, and the grout’s job is to seal. Epoxy terrazzo is laid as a trowel-applied screed at 8 to 12 mm and then ground down by roughly 2 mm to expose the marble, granite, recycled-glass or mother-of-pearl aggregate and create the characteristic polished terrazzo face. Grinding inevitably opens up tiny pores and pinholes between the aggregate and the epoxy binder. Left open, these voids trap dirt, harbour bacteria and break the seamless, hygienic surface that makes epoxy terrazzo attractive for hospitals, food halls and transit buildings in the first place. The grout is troweled or squeegeed across the freshly ground floor, forced into every void, and the excess scraped back, so that after an overnight cure the floor can be re-ground and polished to a dense, pore-free finish. For Indian specifiers, architects and flooring contractors, the important point is that the grout is a consumable that is colour-matched to the terrazzo matrix and is ordered alongside the screed – it is part of the bill of quantities for any Nitoflor ETerrazzo installation, not an optional extra. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, supplies the grout as part of the full system and can advise on quantities against floor area and aggregate type.

The technical insight

The grout works because it is the same epoxy chemistry as the screed – a solvent-free, multi-component epoxy resin (epoxy base plus a modified polyamine hardener) – but formulated as a flowable, void-filling compound rather than a heavily aggregate-loaded screed. That chemical compatibility means the grout bonds monolithically into the ground terrazzo surface instead of sitting as a separate film, so the finished floor cures into a single continuous epoxy matrix. This is what lets the cured Nitoflor ETerrazzo system carry its headline performance figures – a neat-resin compressive strength of around 70 N/mm2 (ASTM C695), system compressive strength near 75 N/mm2 (ASTM C579), abrasion loss of only about 18 mg per 1000 cycles (ASTM D4060, CS17/1 kg), and water absorption of roughly 0.013% (ASTM D570). Two grout passes are usually specified: the first fills the bulk of the pores, and a second pass after inspection catches any pinholes that telegraphed through. Because the system is solvent-free, the grout itself is not flagged as flammable in the Fosroc TDS (unlike the Nitoprime 31 primer, the Sealer and Fosroc Solvent 102, which all have flash points in the 30-75 degC range), but it is still an epoxy and demands gloves, goggles and ventilation. Pot life is short – the parent ETerrazzo system has a pot life of about 60 minutes at 25 degC dropping to 30 minutes at 35 degC – so on an Indian summer site the grout must be mixed in workable batches and used quickly.

Where it is used

  • Grouting and sealing the ground surface of Nitoflor ETerrazzo epoxy terrazzo floors before final polishing
  • Filling pores, pinholes and micro-voids exposed during diamond grinding of the terrazzo screed
  • Decorative seamless flooring in airport lounges, railway and metro terminals and convention centres
  • Hygienic flooring in hospitals, laboratories, pharmaceutical and food-processing environments
  • High-aesthetic retail, mall, hotel-lobby and showroom floors where a polished terrazzo look is specified
  • Educational and institutional buildings requiring durable, easily cleaned decorative floors

Key advantages

  • Solvent-free epoxy – low odour and not classified as flammable in the Fosroc TDS, unlike the system’s primer, sealer and cleaning solvent
  • Chemically identical to the ETerrazzo screed, so it bonds into a single monolithic, seamless matrix rather than a separate skin
  • Seals pores and pinholes to give a dense, hygienic, easily cleaned surface essential for hospitals and food halls
  • Good coverage – approximately 6 to 8 m2 per kg over two applications, keeping consumable cost predictable
  • Colour-matched to the terrazzo matrix so grouting does not disturb the decorative design
  • Supplied in convenient 3 kg and 6 kg packs that suit phased grouting of large floor areas
  • Part of a fully engineered Fosroc system with primer, crack-bridging membrane, screed and sealer designed to work together

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a stand-alone product – it only performs as the grouting stage of the Nitoflor ETerrazzo system and is not a general-purpose floor grout or tile grout
  • For internal use only; the parent ETerrazzo system is not suitable for external exposure
  • Short pot life (the ETerrazzo system runs about 60 min at 25 degC and only 30 min at 35 degC), demanding small batches and quick application in Indian heat
  • Application, grinding, grouting and polishing is a highly skilled process that should be carried out only by experienced, trained terrazzo applicators
  • Requires a sound, dry substrate – not for floors with rising damp or relative humidity above 75% (BS 8203 Appendix A)
  • Must cure overnight before re-grinding and polishing, which extends programme time on fast-track jobs
  • Application outside the 10 to 35 degC range needs Fosroc technical sign-off; epoxy and hardener are skin and eye sensitisers requiring PPE

Selection & best practice

Grout only after the terrazzo screed has reached initial cure and the surface has been rough-ground (40 grit) then medium-ground (80 grit). Thoroughly wash and vacuum the floor so no slurry or dust remains before grouting. Mix only the quantity that can be applied within the pot life – in the Delhi NCR summer, work in small batches and keep material out of direct sun. Force the grout into every void with a spring-steel trowel or non-marking squeegee, scrape off all excess, and allow it to cure overnight. Inspect, and apply a second grout pass to fill any pinholes that remain before final fine-grit polishing. Always finish the floor with two coats of Nitoflor ETerrazzo Sealer to bring out the matrix colour and add a wearing layer, unless an unsealed aesthetic is deliberately specified. Clean tools immediately with Fosroc Solvent 102, and always work to the project method statement obtained from Fosroc.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nitoflor ETerrazzo Grout a standalone floor grout?
No. It is the grouting stage of the Fosroc Nitoflor ETerrazzo epoxy terrazzo system, used to seal and fill pores in a ground terrazzo screed. It is not a tile grout, a paver grout or a general floor-jointing product, and it only performs as part of the full system with Nitoprime 31 primer, the ETerrazzo screed and the ETerrazzo Sealer.
What is its coverage and how is it supplied?
Fosroc gives a guidance coverage of approximately 6 to 8 m2 per kg over two applications. It is supplied in 3 kg and 6 kg packs. Actual consumption depends on how porous the ground surface is, the aggregate type and site conditions, so order with a margin and confirm quantities against your floor area.
When in the process is the grout applied?
After the epoxy terrazzo screed has reached initial cure and been rough-ground (40 grit) and medium-ground (80 grit), the floor is washed and vacuumed, then grouted to fill the exposed pores and pinholes. It cures overnight, after which the floor is re-ground, polished and finally sealed with two coats of Nitoflor ETerrazzo Sealer.
Is it flammable, and what PPE is needed?
The grout is a solvent-free epoxy and is not flagged as flammable in the Fosroc TDS – unlike the Nitoprime 31 primer, the ETerrazzo Sealer and Fosroc Solvent 102, which are flammable with flash points of 75, 30 and 33 degC respectively. As an epoxy it can still sensitise skin and eyes, so gloves, goggles, barrier cream and good ventilation are required.
Can a contractor self-apply it?
Fosroc states that the application, grinding, grouting and polishing of Nitoflor ETerrazzo is a highly skilled process that should be left to experienced, trained terrazzo operatives. Space Arc Engineering, as a Fosroc distributor and applicator, can supply the material and provide or guide trained applicators for projects in Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
How should it be stored and what is the shelf life?
Store under cover in the original unopened packs, in a dry place below 35 degC. Shelf life is 12 months under these conditions; storage at high temperature or humidity will shorten it. In the Indian summer, keep stock and on-site material out of direct sun to protect both shelf life and working pot life.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor ETerrazzo Grout

Nitoflor ETerrazzo Grout should be specified strictly as a component of the Fosroc Nitoflor ETerrazzo decorative flooring system, not as a free-standing product – it is ordered alongside the Nitoprime 31 primer, the ETerrazzo screed, the crack-bridging Nitoflor ETerrazzo Membrane and Fiberglass, and the Nitoflor ETerrazzo Sealer, all of which Space Arc supplies. For projects that need an epoxy floor but not a decorative terrazzo finish, Fosroc’s broader Nitoflor range (such as the self-smoothing and screed grades) is the relevant family rather than this grout. On the wider Indian market, the closest competing decorative-terrazzo and resin-flooring systems come from Sika (Sikafloor terrazzo and decorative epoxy systems), MBCC/Master Builders Solutions (the former BASF MasterTop epoxy and terrazzo-effect floors), and STP Limited for industrial epoxy floors; for general epoxy and PU floor coatings, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) is also a credible Indian option, though it is positioned more at the construction-chemicals and waterproofing end than at architectural terrazzo. Each of those vendors sells the grouting/sealing stage only within its own proprietary terrazzo or resin system, so the practical decision for a specifier is which complete system to adopt; once Nitoflor ETerrazzo is chosen, this grout is the matched, non-substitutable grouting compound for it. Space Arc Engineering positions Fosroc Nitoflor ETerrazzo as the premium, NTMA-referenced epoxy terrazzo choice for prestige interiors and backs it with authorised-distributor supply and applicator support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
