BrandFosrocCategoryIndustrial FlooringFormA three-component (resin base + hardener + graded fillers) self-smoothing epoxy underlay from Fosroc’s Nitoflor EU…

What is it?

A three-component (resin base + hardener + graded fillers) self-smoothing epoxy underlay from Fosroc’s Nitoflor EU family, used to level and regularise concrete floors before laying high-build epoxy or PU toppings.

Where is it used?

Industrial, warehouse, pharma, food-processing and commercial concrete floors across India that are uneven, gritty or out of level and must be brought to tolerance before a final Fosroc coating system is applied.

Why use it?

It corrects surface profile economically in a thin section, develops high compressive and bond strength, cures seamless and durable, and gives the topping a uniform, predictable substrate so the finished floor performs as designed.

How is it applied?

Mix the hardener into the base, blend in the fillers, then spread to a uniform thickness with a squeegee or notched trowel and de-aerate with a spiked roller; overcoat with the chosen Fosroc topping within the stated window.

About Fosroc Nitoflor EU1

Fosroc Nitoflor EU1 belongs to the Nitoflor EU range of self-smoothing epoxy underlays — the preparatory layer that sits between a real-world concrete slab and a high-specification floor finish. On most industrial projects in India the slab as cast is rarely flat enough, smooth enough or consistent enough to receive a thin epoxy or polyurethane topping directly. Surface laitance, trowel marks, fall corrections, minor undulations and blowholes all telegraph through a thin coating. Nitoflor EU1 is formulated to bridge that gap: it is a filled epoxy mortar/underlay that flows out to a smooth, monolithic plane, fills the profile, and develops a hard, chemically resistant surface that subsequent Fosroc systems can key to. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator covering Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering positions Nitoflor EU1 as a value-engineered base layer — you spend on a relatively economical underlay to protect the performance and appearance of a more expensive top coat. Per Fosroc’s literature, the EU underlays are described as a cost-effective, high-strength, quick-and-easy-to-lay, seamless and durable method of levelling floors prior to laying epoxy screeds, toppings or coatings such as the Nitoflor FC and SL series. The grade designation within the EU family (EU1, EU5, EU10, EU50) reflects the build thickness band each product is engineered for, with EU1 sitting at the thin-section end of the range for shallow regularising work where only a few millimetres of correction are needed and the slab is already broadly sound.

The technical insight

The EU underlays are supplied as a three-component system — resin base, resin hardener and a separately bagged graded-aggregate filler — rather than a simple two-pack liquid. That architecture is what lets the product carry load in a thin section: the fillers give it body, abrasion and impact resistance, and a tight modulus match to concrete, while the epoxy binder delivers chemical resistance and a bond to the substrate that, per Fosroc’s specification clause, exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete itself (so a pull-off failure occurs in the slab, not at the interface). For the EU5 grade Fosroc publishes representative laboratory figures of minimum 60 N/mm² compressive strength, 12 N/mm² tensile and 25 N/mm² flexural at 7 days, with nil water absorption (BS 1881 Part 122) — values that frame the strength class of the EU family and explain why these underlays tolerate forklift and impact loads that would crush a weaker cementitious screed. The practical engineering point for a thin grade like EU1 is moisture and soundness of the base: the substrate must be at least 21 days old, surface-dry, free of laitance (removed by grit blasting, scabbling or grinding), and below 5% moisture content. Priming with Nitoprime 25 is only needed on highly absorbent or doubtful concrete. Get the substrate right and EU1 becomes a forgiving, self-levelling correction layer; get it wrong and no underlay can compensate.

Where it is used

  • Regularising and smoothing concrete slabs before high-build Nitoflor FC150, FC140 or SL2000 epoxy toppings
  • Bringing out-of-tolerance industrial and warehouse floors to an acceptable flatness/profile before a thin coating
  • Filling minor surface defects, trowel ridges and shallow undulations on otherwise sound concrete
  • Creating a seamless, dense base for pharmaceutical, food-processing and electronics cleanroom floors
  • Preparing loading bays, production halls and storage areas to receive abrasion- and chemical-resistant finishes
  • Renovating old concrete floors after laitance, oil and previous coatings have been mechanically removed and degreased

Key advantages

  • High-strength filled epoxy system that carries impact and abrasion loads in a thin section
  • Self-smoothing flow gives a seamless, monolithic levelling layer with no joints introduced by the underlay
  • Bond strength greater than the tensile strength of the parent concrete when correctly applied
  • Economical way to correct slab profile, protecting the performance of a costlier top coat
  • Chemical and water resistant — nil water absorption per BS 1881 Part 122
  • Fast turnaround: hardens enough to overcoat within roughly a day, supporting tight site programmes
  • Compatible base for the wider Fosroc Nitoflor epoxy and PU flooring family

Limitations & considerations

  • A levelling and preparatory underlay, not a finished wearing surface — it must be overcoated with a Fosroc topping for chemical/UV/abrasion duty
  • Will not tolerate rising damp or substrate moisture above 5%; a damp-proof membrane is needed where ground moisture is a risk
  • Requires sound, clean, laitance-free concrete at least 21 days old — poor surface prep cannot be corrected by the underlay
  • Limited pot life once mixed (the EU5 grade is about 70 minutes at 35 C); material must be placed quickly and unused material discarded
  • Overcoating must occur within the stated window — typically after about 18 hours but not later than 48 hours — or re-preparation is needed
  • Strength and cure are temperature-dependent; very high ambient temperatures shorten working time and shelf life
  • Epoxy components are skin/eye sensitisers and require gloves, goggles, ventilation and correct handling

Selection & best practice

Treat the substrate, not the product, as the critical variable. Confirm the slab is at least 21 days old and below 5% moisture (use a moisture meter; install a DPM if rising damp is possible), then remove all laitance and contamination by grit blasting, scabbling or grinding and degrease oil-affected areas. Prime highly absorbent concrete with Nitoprime 25. Mix strictly in sequence — hardener fully into base until homogeneous, then add the graded filler under power mixing for a further 3–5 minutes — and never split packs by eye. Place within the pot life, spread to a uniform thickness with a notched trowel or squeegee and de-aerate with a spiked roller to avoid pinholing. Continue any existing expansion joints up through the underlay and the final topping. Plan the programme so the chosen Fosroc top coat goes on inside the overcoating window, and clean tools immediately with Nitoflor Sol. For thin-section EU1 work, getting the correction thickness right in one pass matters — for deeper build-ups, step up to a higher EU grade rather than over-applying EU1.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nitoflor EU1 a finished floor or a base layer?
It is a base layer. Nitoflor EU1 is a self-smoothing epoxy underlay used to level and regularise concrete; it is designed to be overcoated with a Fosroc topping such as Nitoflor FC150, FC140 or SL2000 that provides the final wearing, chemical and decorative properties. It should not be left as the exposed wearing surface.
How is Nitoflor EU1 different from the other EU grades (EU5, EU10, EU50)?
All EU underlays share the same three-component epoxy chemistry and purpose; they differ by the build thickness band each is engineered for. EU1 is the thin-section grade for shallow correction on broadly sound slabs, while higher numbers in the range cover progressively greater thicknesses. Where deeper build-up is needed, Fosroc recommends stepping up to a higher EU grade rather than over-applying a thin one — your Space Arc technical contact can specify the correct grade for the measured correction.
What surface preparation does it need?
The concrete must be at least 21 days old, surface-dry and below 5% moisture content, with all laitance, dust, oil and old coatings removed by grit blasting, mechanical scabbling or grinding and, where contaminated, degreased. Highly absorbent concrete should be primed with Nitoprime 25. Sound preparation is the single biggest factor in performance.
Can it be used where there is dampness or rising moisture?
No. The EU underlays require a dry substrate with moisture content not exceeding 5%, and must not be applied where rising dampness exists or is likely. If ground moisture is a risk, a suitable damp-proof membrane must be installed first. Applying over a damp slab risks debonding and blistering of the whole floor system.
How soon can the topping be applied after the underlay?
For the EU range, overcoating with the chosen Fosroc floor system should not begin until the underlay is around 18 hours old, and should be completed within about 48 hours. Miss that window and the surface will need re-preparation to ensure the topping bonds. Exact timings depend on ambient temperature, so plan the programme accordingly.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor EU1

Within Fosroc’s own catalogue, Nitoflor EU1 is the thin-build member of the Nitoflor EU underlay family (alongside EU5, EU10 and EU50) and is almost always specified as the partner layer beneath a high-build topping such as Nitoflor FC150, Nitoflor FC140, Nitoflor SL2000 or a Nitoflor PU/floorcrete system; complementary Fosroc products in the same workflow include Nitoprime 25 (primer for absorbent substrates) and Nitoflor Sol (tool cleaner). Where a project calls for a cementitious rather than epoxy levelling approach, Fosroc’s Nitoflor Levelcrete is the comparable in-house option. Against the wider Indian market, the closest competitor underlays and self-smoothing epoxy levellers come from Sika (the Sikafloor levelling and screed range), MBCC/Master Builders Solutions (MasterTop epoxy and self-levelling systems), STP Limited and Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) for the broader industrial-flooring and waterproofing-adjacent segment. The honest positioning: EU1 is not a hero product on its own — its value is as a dependable, strength-rated base that lets a premium Fosroc top coat reach its specified flatness and performance. Specify it when the slab needs only a few millimetres of epoxy correction and you want a single, compatible Fosroc system from substrate to finish; if the correction is deeper, move up the EU range or consider a cementitious leveller.
