Fosroc Nitoflor Emeritop
Emery-aggregate dry-shake surface hardener that fuses monolithically with fresh concrete to deliver an extremely hard, skid-resistant, abrasion-proof industrial floor.
What is it?
A factory-blended dry-shake floor hardener built around graded emery (Corundite) aggregate, Portland cement and workability additives, broadcast onto fresh wet concrete to form an integral, ultra-hard wearing surface.
Where is it used?
Heavy-traffic industrial concrete floors: warehouses, factories, loading bays, machine and repair shops, ramps, distribution centres and logistics yards across India.
Why use it?
It raises the abrasion resistance of plain concrete by over 300%, resists polishing and remains skid-resistant even when wet, while curing monolithically to avoid the curling and cracking of thin granolithic toppings.
How is it applied?
Dry-shaken in two passes onto fresh concrete that has lost its surface water sheen, floated in, then power-trowelled to a dense finish and cured immediately.
About Fosroc Nitoflor Emeritop
Fosroc Nitoflor Emeritop is a premium dry-shake surface hardener engineered for concrete floors that take a genuine beating. It is supplied as a quality-controlled, factory-blended powder that is ready to use on site with no additional batching or admixtures. The blend combines selected, graded emery aggregate, Portland cement and proprietary additives that improve workability so the material can be floated and trowelled cleanly into the surface of fresh, wet concrete. The defining ingredient is emery, also known as Corundite, an extremely hard and chemically inert mineral aggregate. Because emery resists polishing as it wears, an Emeritop floor keeps its skid-resistant texture over years of service rather than burnishing smooth like a plain power-floated slab. For contractors, consultants and plant engineers in India who are specifying floors for warehouses, manufacturing sheds and logistics facilities, Emeritop sits at the premium, non-metallic end of the Fosroc Nitoflor dry-shake range. It is the product to reach for where wheeled traffic, hard-wheeled forklifts, steel-tracked movement and dragged loads would quickly chew through an ordinary concrete surface. Unlike metallic-aggregate hardeners, the non-metallic emery will never rust, stain or bleed, which keeps the floor clean in food, pharmaceutical and warehouse environments. The hardener cures monolithically with the parent slab, eliminating the bond-line and the shrinkage, curling and delamination problems that plague separately-laid granolithic screeds. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Nitoflor Emeritop as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India project sites.
The technical insight
The performance of Emeritop comes from the interaction of three things: aggregate hardness, monolithic bonding and finishing discipline. Emery (Corundite) sits high on the mineral hardness scale, well above the quartz sand and limestone fines that make up ordinary concrete, so the trafficked surface is armoured with particles that simply do not abrade at the same rate as the matrix around them. Because the hardener is broadcast onto plastic concrete and worked in before the slab takes its final set, the emery-rich layer becomes integral with the slab rather than a separate topping. This is why Fosroc describes the cure as monolithic, and it is the single most important advantage over a bonded granolithic screed: there is no weak interface to debond, and the curling, shrinkage and edge-cracking associated with thin toppings are designed out. Manufacturer comparative testing shows the treated surface improving the abrasion resistance of the base concrete by over 300%, and the non-porous finish also raises resistance to oils, grease and impact. The practical engineering caveat is that all of this depends on getting the timing right. The first shake must go down when the bleed water has gone but the concrete is still receptive, the second shake follows after initial floating, and final power-trowelling consolidates the layer. Add water to aid trowelling and you locally dilute the hardener and weaken the surface. Correct, prompt curing immediately after finishing is essential to develop strength and prevent plastic shrinkage cracking.
Where it is used
- Warehouse and distribution-centre floors carrying continuous forklift and pallet-truck traffic
- Manufacturing and engineering shop floors, machine shops and fabrication bays
- Loading bays, dock levellers and goods-inward areas subject to dragged and dropped loads
- Vehicle ramps and circulation aisles needing wet skid resistance
- Cold-store and food-grade warehouse floors where a non-rusting, non-staining hardener is required
- Heavy-engineering, automotive and ancillary plant floors with steel-wheeled trolley movement
- Logistics parks, 3PL hubs and e-commerce fulfilment centres being built across Indian industrial corridors
Key advantages
- Improves the abrasion resistance of the base concrete by over 300% for a long-service-life floor
- Emery (Corundite) aggregate resists polishing, so the surface stays skid-resistant even when worn and wet
- Cures monolithically with the slab, eliminating curling, shrinkage and cracking common to thin granolithic screeds
- Non-metallic: will never rust, stain or disintegrate, suitable for clean and food-grade environments
- Dense, non-porous finish resists penetration of oils and grease and improves impact resistance
- Factory-blended and ready to use on site, removing on-site batching errors
- Available in natural grey as standard with Brick Red, Green and Off-White for large orders to aid zoning and housekeeping
Limitations & considerations
- Can only be applied to fresh, plastic concrete by the dry-shake method, it is not a coating for existing or hardened floors
- Application timing is critical and demands an experienced power-float crew, poor timing weakens the surface
- Adding water to ease trowelling dilutes the hardener locally and reduces abrasion performance
- Provides surface hardening only, it does not increase the structural load capacity or flatness of the slab beyond good finishing practice
- Not a chemical-resistant topping, severe acid, solvent or aggressive chemical exposure needs a resin screed or coating instead
- Requires immediate, correct curing, neglecting this risks plastic shrinkage cracking and dusting
- Special colours are only economically available on larger orders, small jobs are effectively limited to natural grey
Selection & best practice
Specify Emeritop only on a well-designed, properly compacted concrete slab with adequate strength and a planned joint layout; surface hardeners cannot rescue a poor base. Place and level the concrete, then apply the hardener by dry shake once the bleed-water sheen has disappeared but the slab is still workable, typically in two passes with the first shake floated in before the second is broadcast. Power-float and power-trowel to consolidate the emery-rich layer to a dense, closed finish, and never add water at the surface to ease trowelling. Cure the finished floor immediately and thoroughly using a Fosroc curing compound such as Concure to prevent plastic shrinkage cracking and dusting. Use trained applicators, the dry-shake window is short and unforgiving, and protect the new floor from traffic until it has gained sufficient strength. How we position Fosroc Nitoflor Emeritop
Within the Fosroc Nitoflor dry-shake family, Emeritop is the premium non-metallic option, sitting above Nitoflor Hardtop and Hardtop Standard for floors facing the most severe abrasion, with Nitoflor Metaltop NF being the metallic-aggregate alternative where maximum surface toughness outranks the no-rust requirement. For existing or already-cured slabs that need hardening and dust-proofing rather than a fresh dry-shake, the right Fosroc partner product is the liquid Nitoflor Lithurin / Lithurin M, and finished Emeritop floors should be cured with Fosroc Concure. Honestly assessed against the wider Indian market, Emeritop competes with other reputable emery and non-metallic dry-shake hardeners such as Sika Chapdur and Sikafloor dry-shakes, MBS and similar mineral hardeners, STP and Dr. Fixit branded floor-hardening systems, and a wide range of generic local emery shakes. Emeritop’s draw is the proven Fosroc specification, consistent factory blending and genuine emery (Corundite) aggregate; where chemical resistance, jointless flatness or a decorative finish is the priority, a resin-based Nitoflor topping or a competitor epoxy/PU screed may be a better fit than any cement-based dry-shake. Space Arc Engineering can help specifiers in Delhi NCR and Pan-India select between these options and supply or apply the right system for the floor’s actual duty.
