What is it?

A solvent-free, self-smoothing (flow-applied) epoxy resin floor topping laid at 2-4 mm thickness that cures to a dense, seamless, coloured and chemically resistant surface.

Where is it used?

Clean rooms, pharmaceutical and laboratory areas, food and beverage processing, light-to-medium industrial plants, warehouses, exhibition halls, hospitals and showrooms where a hygienic, easy-clean floor is required.

Why use it?

It delivers a jointless, impervious, easy-to-clean finish with high compressive strength (around 90 MPa) and good chemical and abrasion resistance, with no solvent odour and very low VOC during application.

How is it applied?

Prepared and primed concrete is coated by trained applicators: components are mixed, poured, spread with a steel trowel to 2-4 mm, then deaerated with a spiked roller and allowed to cure – foot traffic in about 24 hours, vehicular in about 48 hours.

About Fosroc Nitoflor SL234

Fosroc Nitoflor SL234 is a self-smoothing, solvent-free epoxy resin floor topping from the Fosroc Nitoflor range, supplied as a pre-weighed, multi-component kit that is mixed and laid on site by trained applicators. Applied at a nominal 2-4 mm, it flows out to a smooth, jointless, impervious surface that is dense enough to resist abrasion, hard-wearing enough for trolley and light vehicle traffic, and chemically resistant enough for spillage-prone production environments. It belongs to the same self-smoothing epoxy screed family that Fosroc markets internationally simply as Nitoflor SL (previously branded Durafloor SL), so its chemistry, thickness band and performance envelope mirror that established system. For specifiers in India, SL234 sits in the mid-range of the Fosroc flooring portfolio: thicker and tougher than a thin-film roller-applied coating such as Nitoflor FC150, but lighter-duty than the heavy-duty 3 mm-plus toppings like Nitoflor SL3000 that are aimed at aggressive food, dairy and chemical process floors. Because it is solvent-free, there is no application odour and no fire hazard from the topping itself, which makes it practical inside occupied or sensitive buildings such as hospitals, laboratories and clean rooms. The finished floor is seamless and non-porous, eliminating the grout lines and joints where dirt, bacteria and moisture collect in tiled floors, so it is a natural fit wherever hygiene and cleanability drive the specification. It is available in a range of standard colours, allowing zoning, safety demarcation and a clean architectural finish, and can be overcoated with a Fosroc anti-slip floor coating where slip resistance or a renewable wearing layer is needed. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies SL234 alongside the correct Fosroc primer and the technical and applicator support needed to install it to specification.

The technical insight

Nitoflor SL234 works as a self-levelling epoxy screed: a low-viscosity, pigmented epoxy base and amine-type hardener are mixed with a graded aggregate or filler pack, then poured and spread so that the resin flows out under its own weight and surface tension to a smooth, near-level finish before it gels. A spiked roller is run over the wet topping to release entrapped air and avoid pinholes. The system is solvent-free with a very low VOC content (around 9 g/litre), so it cures by chemical cross-linking rather than solvent evaporation, which is what allows it to be laid in one pass at 2-4 mm without sagging or shrinkage cracking. The cured topping develops high compressive strength – in the region of 90 MPa – and a flexural strength of about 30 MPa at 7 days, giving it the impact and load resistance expected of an industrial floor. The bond to the substrate is the critical success factor: the concrete must be sound, dry (relative humidity below 75%), and mechanically prepared by grinding or captive shot-blasting, then sealed with a Fosroc epoxy primer so the topping keys to the slab rather than to laitance. Cure is temperature-dependent; at around 23°C the floor takes foot traffic in roughly 24 hours, vehicular traffic in about 48 hours, and reaches full chemical resistance in about 7 days, with cooler Indian winter sites curing more slowly. One important property note: like most aromatic epoxies it is not UV-stable, so colour and gloss can shift under sunlight – it is intended for internal floors.

Where it is used

  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing, formulation and packaging areas requiring a hygienic, washable floor
  • Clean rooms and controlled environments where a seamless, non-shedding surface is mandatory
  • Hospital, laboratory and medical facility floors needing easy disinfection
  • Food, beverage and dairy processing and packing areas (non-taint, light to medium duty)
  • Electronics, light engineering and general light-to-medium industrial production floors
  • Warehouses, storage and maintenance areas with trolley and light forklift movement
  • Exhibition halls, showrooms, supermarkets and retail back-of-house floors
  • Garages and traffic decking for light to medium duty vehicles

Key advantages

  • Solvent-free with very low VOC – no application odour and no fire hazard from the topping, suitable for occupied and sensitive buildings
  • Self-smoothing flow application gives a seamless, jointless finish with no grout lines for dirt or bacteria to collect
  • High compressive strength (around 90 MPa) and flexural strength (around 30 MPa) for industrial impact and load resistance
  • Good chemical resistance to a wide range of industrial chemicals and good abrasion/wear resistance
  • Dense, impervious and hygienic – easy to clean and disinfect, ideal for pharma, food and healthcare
  • Fast installation that minimises downtime; foot traffic in about 24 hours and vehicular in about 48 hours at 23°C
  • Available in a range of colours for zoning, safety demarcation and an attractive finish
  • Can be overcoated with a Fosroc anti-slip coating to add slip resistance or a renewable wear layer

Limitations & considerations

  • Not UV-stable – colour and gloss can change under sunlight, so it is for internal use only
  • Not a floor-levelling product; it follows the contours of the sub-floor and will reflect defects in the concrete below
  • Substrate-sensitive – must not be applied over surfaces subject to rising damp or with relative humidity above 75%, or over asphalt, weak/friable concrete, unmodified sand-cement screeds, PVC tiles or sheet
  • Requires proper mechanical surface preparation (grinding/blasting) and the correct Fosroc epoxy primer to achieve bond
  • Application temperature must be above about 10°C; cooler conditions slow cure and very high temperatures shorten pot life
  • Does not give a flawless ‘mirror finish’ – minor imperfections and, on darker shades, slight dimpling can occur
  • Must be kept away from water/moisture until fully cured to avoid surface blooming
  • Light to medium duty rated – very aggressive chemical or heavy-impact process floors call for a heavier Nitoflor topping or a polyurethane system

Selection & best practice

Treat substrate preparation and priming as the make-or-break step. Confirm the concrete is at least 28 days old, sound, and has a moisture content and relative humidity within Fosroc limits (RH below 75%) using a hygrometer before any product arrives on site; where rising damp is possible, install a damp-proof membrane first. Mechanically prepare the slab by grinding or captive shot-blasting to remove laitance, then make good defects with a Fosroc epoxy repair mortar and apply the specified Fosroc epoxy primer, allowing the correct overcoating window. Mix only full, pre-weighed kits with matching batch numbers – never part-mix – using a slow-speed paddle, and work within the pot life, planning labour and materials so a given bay is laid in one continuous pour. Spread to a uniform 2-4 mm with a notched trowel and deaerate with a spiked roller. Carry existing movement and expansion joints through the new floor. Protect the fresh floor from water and traffic until cured, and engage trained Fosroc-recognised applicators – Space Arc Engineering can supply both the material and approved applicator support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoflor SL234 a real Fosroc product?
Yes. Nitoflor SL234 is listed on the official Fosroc website as a flow-applied, 2-4 mm epoxy resin floor topping for industrial environments. It is part of the Fosroc Nitoflor SL self-smoothing epoxy screed family, which Fosroc markets internationally as Nitoflor SL.
What thickness is Nitoflor SL234 applied at?
It is a self-smoothing epoxy topping applied at a nominal 2 to 4 mm. Thicker applications give greater impact resistance, while 2 mm is typical where the slab is good and duty is lighter. It is not a levelling product, so the concrete must already be reasonably flat and sound.
How long before the floor can be used after laying SL234?
At around 23°C the floor typically takes foot traffic in about 24 hours, light vehicular traffic in about 48 hours, and reaches full chemical resistance at about 7 days. Cooler Indian winter sites cure more slowly, so allow extra time in low temperatures and never trafficking before the topping has set.
What surface preparation and primer does it need?
The concrete must be sound, at least 28 days old, dry (relative humidity below 75%) and mechanically prepared by grinding or shot-blasting to remove laitance. It is then sealed with the appropriate Fosroc epoxy primer before the topping is laid. Skipping preparation or priming is the most common cause of debonding.
Can Nitoflor SL234 be used outdoors or in sunlight?
No. Like most epoxy floor systems it is not UV-stable, so colour and gloss can change under sunlight, including light through windows. It is intended for internal floors. Where UV exposure or external use is involved, a UV-stable polyurethane topcoat or a different system should be specified.
How does SL234 compare with other Fosroc Nitoflor floors?
SL234 is a mid-duty, self-smoothing 2-4 mm epoxy floor: tougher than thin-film roller coatings such as Nitoflor FC150, but lighter-duty than heavy 3 mm-plus toppings like Nitoflor SL3000 used for aggressive food, dairy and chemical process floors. For wet, thermally cycled or very aggressive areas a Fosroc polyurethane screed is usually a better fit.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor SL234

Nitoflor SL234 is best understood as Fosroc’s mid-range self-smoothing epoxy floor: a hygienic, seamless 2-4 mm topping for pharma, healthcare, food and light-to-medium industry, sitting above thin-film roller coatings like Fosroc Nitoflor FC150 and below heavy-duty process toppings such as Fosroc Nitoflor SL3000 and the UV/thermal-shock-resistant polyurethane Nitoflor lines. Within the Fosroc system it is typically paired with a Fosroc epoxy primer (Nitoprime / Nitomortar 903 family), an epoxy repair mortar for making good, and an optional Fosroc anti-slip overcoat for slip resistance. Honestly assessed, it is not the only credible option in India: Sika offers comparable self-smoothing epoxy screeds in its Sikafloor range (for example Sikafloor self-levelling epoxy systems), MBCC/Master Builders Solutions (formerly BASF, often referenced as MBS) offers the Mastertop epoxy and PU flooring range, STP and Dr. Fixit also supply epoxy flooring systems for the Indian market, and Dr. Fixit/Pidilite is a strong choice where the same contractor is bundling waterproofing. For wet-process, steam-cleaned or thermally cycled floors, a polyurethane (PU) screed – whether from Fosroc, Sika or Master Builders – will usually outperform any aromatic epoxy including SL234. Where the priority is a proven, solvent-free, hygienic internal epoxy floor backed by local Fosroc distributor and applicator support, SL234 is a sound, specification-friendly choice, and Space Arc Engineering can advise on the right Fosroc build-up versus these alternatives for a given site.
