The service life of the Nitoflor Traffigard system depends on the traffic volume, the type of vehicles, the quality of the substrate preparation, the application quality, and the maintenance regime. In typical multi-storey car park conditions (passenger vehicles only, properly prepared and applied system), a service life of 8 to 15 years for the waterproofing system is achievable. The wear-resistant topcoat is the layer most exposed to abrasion and UV, and may require a maintenance re-coat of the topcoat at 5 to 8 years even if the underlying waterproofing membrane remains intact. Regular inspection for delamination, cracking, or loss of topcoat thickness will indicate when a full system replacement or maintenance re-coat is required.

Can Nitoflor Traffigard be applied to a car park deck that has existing waterproofing which has started to fail?

The approach to a car park deck with failing existing waterproofing depends on the type and extent of failure. If the existing coating is failing through delamination or blistering, it must typically be completely removed by mechanical means (grinding, shot blasting, or milling) back to the concrete substrate before the Nitoflor Traffigard system can be applied. If the existing coating is generally intact but the topcoat has worn through, it may be possible to apply a topcoat re-coat over the sound underlying waterproofing membrane after preparation — but this requires testing the existing membrane integrity (tap testing, pull-off adhesion testing) before proceeding. Applying a new waterproofing system over a failed existing system invariably fails — the new system will delaminate at the existing system-concrete interface.

Does Nitoflor Traffigard require a primer and is it compatible with the Fosroc Renderoc repair mortar system?

Yes. The Nitoflor Traffigard system begins with a primer coat applied to the prepared concrete substrate. This primer penetrates the concrete surface, consolidates any near-surface weak zones, and provides a chemically active bond for the subsequent waterproof membrane coat. The system is compatible with prior concrete repairs using the Fosroc Renderoc system — provided the repair mortars are fully cured (minimum 28 days for cementitious mortars, or per the repair mortar data sheet) before the Traffigard system is applied over them. Any areas of new repair mortar must be adequately cured and at the correct moisture content before coating — fresh mortar with high residual moisture will cause the waterproof membrane to blister.
