What is it?

A three-part, solvent-free trowel-applied epoxy resin screed (epoxy resin + modified amine hardener + graded inert aggregate) laid 3-6 mm thick as a heavy-duty industrial floor topping. The cured TF5000 E surface has a decorative mottled, slightly granular non-slip finish of uniform colour.

Where is it used?

Heavy engineering plants, chemical handling and process areas, steelworks, dairies, breweries, oil refineries, paint workshops, battery rooms, plating factories, and sugar and food industries, plus lighter-duty zones such as warehouses and trucking lanes that need high durability and low maintenance.

Why use it?

It delivers an extremely high-strength, seamless, impervious floor (compressive strength >45 N/mm2) with exceptional resistance to abrasion and a wide range of chemicals, while keeping a safe non-slip finish for foot and vehicular traffic.

How is it applied?

Sound, dry concrete is prepared by grit-blasting or grinding, primed with Nitoprime 25 (or Nitoprime 28 on steel), then the pre-weighed resin, hardener and aggregate are mixed and trowel-applied to a compacted 3-6 mm thickness. It accepts top coating within 24 hours and light vehicular traffic at 48 hours.

About Fosroc Nitoflor TF5000 E

Fosroc Nitoflor TF5000 E is the decorative-finish variant of Fosroc’s well-established Nitoflor TF5000 heavy-duty epoxy screed system. It is a three-part, solvent-free combination of epoxy resin, modified amine hardeners and specially graded, high-crushing-strength chemically inert aggregates, supplied in pre-weighed units ready for on-site mixing. Laid by trowel at a nominal 3 to 6 mm thickness, it forms a dense, impervious, seamless topping that bonds permanently to a properly prepared concrete substrate.

The product is engineered for environments where an ordinary power-floated concrete or thin-film coating would not survive. The graded aggregate gives it the body and crushing strength to take point loads, forklift wheels and dropped tooling, while the carefully selected amine curing agent gives broad chemical resistance against acids, alkalis, oils, solvents and process spillages. Because it is laid as a monolithic screed rather than a tiled or jointed system, it removes the grout lines and lap joints that are the usual points of failure and bacterial ingress in industrial floors. For Indian projects this is supplied through Space Arc Engineering, an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator covering Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with the system completed using the matching Nitoprime 25 primer and, where a sealed hygienic finish is wanted, a Nitoflor FC-range epoxy seal coat.

The technical insight

The performance of TF5000 E comes from being a filled trowel screed rather than a self-smoothing coating. Unlike a 2-3 mm self-levelling epoxy that is essentially resin plus fine filler, TF5000 is heavily loaded with high-crushing-strength inert aggregate, so the wear surface is carried largely by hard mineral particles rather than soft resin. This is why it achieves a compressive strength above 45 N/mm2 (ASTM C579) against roughly 20 N/mm2 for typical floor concrete, and a flexural strength above 13 N/mm2 (BS6319) against about 6 N/mm2 for concrete. The 3-6 mm build also matters mechanically: at this thickness the screed behaves as a structural wearing layer that distributes impact and rolling loads into the slab, whereas a thin coating simply telegraphs and chips. Bond is the critical design factor: pull-off adhesion is specified above 2.5 N/mm2 (ASTM D4541), which generally exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete itself, meaning the substrate fails before the bond line. That bond is only realised on a sound, dry (moisture below 5 percent), mechanically prepared and Nitoprime 25-primed surface applied while the primer is still tacky, so surface preparation, not the screed chemistry, is where most failures originate.

Where it is used

  • Heavy engineering plant and machine-shop floors subject to point loads and dropped tooling
  • Chemical handling, process and plating areas exposed to acid and alkali spillage
  • Steelworks, foundries and battery rooms requiring abrasion and corrosion resistance
  • Dairies, breweries, sugar, beverage and food-processing floors needing a seamless impervious surface
  • Oil refineries and paint workshops facing solvent and oil contamination
  • Warehouse aisles, trucking lanes and forklift routes needing above-average durability and low maintenance
  • Perimeter edge coving up to 150 mm formed in the same material for hygienic floor-to-wall junctions

Key advantages

  • Extremely high strength: compressive strength >45 N/mm2 and flexural strength >13 N/mm2, well above ordinary floor concrete
  • Seamless and impervious, eliminating joints and grout lines that are typical sources of failure and contamination
  • Broad chemical resistance: rated Excellent against dilute sulphuric and citric acid, oils, solvents, salt and bleach on constant immersion
  • Excellent abrasion and wear resistance for heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic
  • Safe non-slip, slightly granular textured finish with a decorative mottled uniform-colour appearance
  • Solvent-free formulation supplied in pre-weighed units for consistent, controlled on-site mixing
  • Fast turnaround: accepts top coating within ~24 hours and light vehicular traffic at ~48 hours
  • Can form integral coving up to 150 mm and be over-sealed with Nitoflor FC-range coatings for hygienic areas

Limitations & considerations

  • Performance depends entirely on substrate preparation: concrete must be at least 28 days old, sound, and below 5% moisture, with mechanical prep (grit-blast/grind) and Nitoprime 25 priming
  • Trowel-applied screed requires skilled applicators; finish quality and compaction are operator-dependent
  • Phosphoric acid 50% causes only a slight colour change (Grade C) and strong nitric/sulphuric acid (25% and above) are rated only for occasional spillage with good housekeeping, not constant immersion
  • Not for permanent exposure above 60 C; high heat, hot welding activity and dragged metal-wheeled trolleys can damage the floor
  • Pot life is limited (>60 minutes at 27 C) so mixed material must be placed promptly; epoxy cure slows in cold conditions
  • Steel substrates require separate treatment: shot-blasting to SA 2.5 and priming with Nitoprime 28
  • Drilling or core-cutting through the floor should not be done without confirmation from the manufacturer

Selection & best practice

Treat surface preparation as the make-or-break step. New concrete should be at least 28 days old with moisture content below 5 percent; remove laitance by light grit-blasting, scabbling or grinding, and on old floors mechanically remove all oil, grease and existing coatings, which may have penetrated several millimetres. Prime with Nitoprime 25 (two coats on porous floors) and lay the TF5000 E while the primer is still tacky to achieve maximum bond. Mix the full hardener into the base, then add the aggregate and continue mechanical mixing for 2-3 minutes until homogeneous, and place within the pot life. Spread with a steel trowel, tamp with a wooden float for full compaction, and use screeding rods to hold a minimum compacted thickness of 5 mm. Carry existing substrate expansion joints up through the topping. Where a sealed hygienic finish is required, allow the screed to cure at least one day, rub down high spots, and seal with a Nitoflor FC-range epoxy coating.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nitoflor TF5000 E an epoxy or a cementitious floor?
It is a three-part, solvent-free epoxy resin screed. It combines epoxy resin, a modified amine hardener and specially graded high-crushing-strength inert aggregate, trowel-applied at 3-6 mm. It is not a cementitious screed, so it cures by chemical reaction rather than hydration and gives far higher chemical and abrasion resistance than concrete.
How thick is it applied and what coverage should I expect?
It is laid at a nominal 3 to 6 mm, with a recommended minimum compacted thickness of 5 mm. As a guide, one 12 litre pack of TF5000 covers about 2.4 m2 at 5 mm. The Nitoprime 25 primer covers roughly 5.5-6.5 m2 per litre. Actual usage varies with substrate texture and porosity.
How strong and chemical-resistant is it?
Compressive strength is above 45 N/mm2 (ASTM C579) and flexural strength above 13 N/mm2 (BS6319), well beyond typical floor concrete. It is rated Excellent on constant immersion against dilute sulphuric and citric acid, oils, solvents, salt and bleach. Strong nitric and concentrated sulphuric acid are suitable only for occasional spillage with good housekeeping.
How long before the floor can be used after laying?
At 27 C it reaches initial hardness in about 18 hours, can accept top coating within roughly 24 hours, takes light vehicular traffic at about 48 hours, and reaches full cure in 7 days. Lower temperatures slow these times, so cold-weather projects should allow longer.
What surface preparation and priming does it need?
Concrete must be sound, dry (moisture below 5 percent) and at least 28 days old. Remove laitance and contamination by grit-blasting, scabbling or grinding, then prime with Nitoprime 25 and lay the screed while the primer is tacky. Steel must be shot-blasted to SA 2.5 and primed with Nitoprime 28. Good preparation is the single biggest factor in long-term performance.
Can it be made hygienic and cleanable for food or pharma areas?
Yes. It can be coved at floor-to-wall junctions up to 150 mm in the same material, and once at least one day old it can be sealed with a Nitoflor FC-range epoxy floor coating to give a smooth, easy-clean, sealed finish suited to wet-process and high-cleanliness environments.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor TF5000 E

Within the Fosroc Nitoflor flooring range, TF5000 E sits at the heavy-duty end as a trowel-applied screed and should not be confused with thinner self-smoothing systems such as the Nitoflor self-levelling epoxies or thin-film coatings like the Nitoflor FC range, which are in fact used as the optional seal coat over TF5000 E. It is paired in use with Nitoprime 25 and Nitoprime 28 primers, and Reebaklens for acid etching, all from the same Fosroc system, which is the most reliable way to specify it. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering recommends keeping the whole stack Fosroc for warranty and compatibility. For comparison and tender flexibility, credible competing heavy-duty epoxy screeds in the Indian market include Sika’s Sikafloor epoxy mortar screeds (e.g. Sikafloor-263/264 build-ups), MBCC/Master Builders Solutions MasterTop epoxy screed systems, STP Limited’s epoxy flooring range, and for lighter-duty industrial floor coatings Pidilite Dr. Fixit Roffe epoxy floor products. TF5000 E is most competitive where a thick, aggregate-filled, chemical- and abrasion-resistant screed is genuinely required rather than a thin decorative coating; for very thin or fast-track jobs a self-levelling or coating system from these ranges may be more economical.
