Fosroc Proofex 3000
Cold-applied, self-adhesive HDPE cross-laminated tanking membrane for basements, substructures and buried decks — Type A barrier protection to BS 8102 with built-in radon and ground-salt defence.
What is it?
A 1.5 mm thick, cold-applied self-adhesive waterproofing membrane built from a cross-laminated HDPE carrier film bonded to a polymer-modified bitumen compound. It is a Type A (barrier) tanking sheet to BS 8102:2009.
Where is it used?
Basement walls and floors, retaining structures, foundations, pile caps, podium and buried roof decks, and sub-structures exposed to groundwater, soluble sulphates and chlorides.
Why use it?
Self-adhesive lamination means no torching or hot works, fast and reliable laps, full bond to primed concrete (no lateral water tracking), plus vapour, radon and aggressive-salt protection in a single sheet.
How is it applied?
Prime the substrate with Proofex Primer, peel the release film and roll the membrane onto walls or slabs, overlapping side laps 75 mm and end laps 150 mm, then roller down and protect before backfilling or pouring.
About Fosroc Proofex 3000
Fosroc Proofex 3000 is a high-performance, cold-applied tanking membrane engineered for structures that must keep groundwater out for their entire service life. Each sheet pairs a tough cross-laminated high-density polyethylene (HDPE) carrier film with a self-adhesive polymer-modified bitumen compound. The HDPE face gives the membrane its puncture resistance, dimensional stability and resistance to aggressive ground chemistry, while the bitumen layer forms a continuous, fully-bonded seal to a primed concrete substrate. Because the system is cold-applied and self-adhesive, there is no naked flame, no torch and no hot bitumen on site — a meaningful safety and programme advantage on occupied or confined basement excavations. Within the classification of BS 8102:2009 (Protection of Structures Against Water from the Ground), Proofex 3000 is a Type A — barrier — waterproofing system, and it is recognised as suitable for basements of Grade 2 and Grade 3 usage. Alongside its waterproofing duty it acts as a vapour barrier and a radon barrier (in line with BRE Report 211), and it shields the concrete it protects from attack by soluble sulphates and chlorides commonly found in Indian ground conditions. For Indian projects — deep basements in Delhi NCR, metro and infrastructure substructures, podium decks and water-retaining shells — Space Arc Engineering supplies Proofex 3000 as part of a complete, specified tanking package with the correct primer, detailing accessories and protection boards. For sites where methane gas resistance is also required, the sister grade Proofex 3000MR carries the same installation logic with added methane and radon performance.
The technical insight
The defining feature of Proofex 3000 is its dual-layer architecture: a cross-laminated HDPE film, not a single-direction polythene, sits over a self-adhesive polymer-modified bitumen. Cross-lamination orients the polymer in two directions, which is why the sheet resists tearing and puncture from backfill and rebar while still flexing around corners and upstands. The full-surface self-adhesive bond is the second key idea — unlike a loose-laid or spot-bonded sheet, a fully bonded membrane denies water a path to migrate laterally between membrane and concrete, so even a minor breach cannot ‘feed’ a leak across the structure. Independent testing recorded by Fosroc shows tensile strength of roughly 215 N/50 mm (longitudinal) and 220 N/50 mm (transverse), elongation at break in the 230–325% range, and tear resistance of 65–125 N depending on direction. Adhesion to primed concrete is about 4.9 N/mm, the radon permeability is 5.7 x 10⁻¹² m²/s, and the sheet is rated vapour-impermeable. The practical window for the installer is an application temperature of +5°C to +45°C and a service temperature band of −40°C to +80°C, which comfortably covers Indian climatic extremes. The non-negotiable step is priming: Proofex Primer must be applied so the bitumen develops its full bond — skipping or under-curing the primer is the single most common cause of disbondment.
Where it is used
- Tanking of basement walls and floors (Type A barrier protection to BS 8102:2009, Grades 2 and 3)
- Waterproofing of retaining walls, foundations, pile caps and raft slabs against groundwater and hydrostatic pressure
- Protection of concrete against soluble sulphates and chlorides in aggressive ground
- Radon barrier to BRE Report 211 in affected ground
- Vapour barrier / damp-proof membrane (DPM) with continuity to wall DPCs
- Buried roof decks, podium slabs and planter areas requiring a fully-bonded membrane
- Sub-structures of metro, tunnel and infrastructure works exposed to standing water
Key advantages
- Cold-applied and self-adhesive — no torch, naked flame or hot works on site
- Fully bonded to primed concrete, preventing lateral water tracking behind the membrane
- Cross-laminated HDPE carrier delivers high puncture, tear and impact resistance
- Single sheet provides waterproofing plus vapour and radon (BRE 211) protection
- Protects concrete from soluble sulphate and chloride attack in aggressive ground
- Recognised Type A barrier system under BS 8102:2009 for Grade 2 and 3 basements
- Consistent factory thickness (1.5 mm) and quality versus site-mixed coatings
- Fast, repeatable laps (75 mm side / 150 mm end) for predictable productivity
- Wide service temperature tolerance (−40°C to +80°C) suited to Indian climates
Limitations & considerations
- Requires Proofex Primer and a fully cured, dry, sound substrate — poor priming causes disbondment
- Application temperature limited to +5°C to +45°C; not for rain-wet or frozen surfaces
- Standard grade is not methane-resistant — specify Proofex 3000MR where ground gas (methane) is present
- As a Type A external barrier, it must be installed correctly and protected before backfill; defects are hard to access once buried
- Needs a protection board / screed and careful detailing at penetrations, corners and construction joints
- Substrate must be free of voids, fins, laitance and sharp projections that could puncture the sheet
- Not a substitute for site investigation — a methane/radon survey should precede grade selection
Selection & best practice
Always begin with a substrate that is structurally sound, cured, dry and free of laitance, dust and sharp projections; grind or fill defects before priming. Apply Proofex Primer at the specified rate and allow it to become tacky-dry before laying the membrane — this is the most critical step for adhesion. Lay sheets with firm roller pressure to expel air, maintaining minimum 75 mm side laps and 150 mm end laps, and stagger end joints. Detail all internal and external corners, upstands, pipe penetrations and construction joints first using reinforcing strips or matching detailing tape so the field membrane laps onto sound, pre-formed corners. Maintain continuity between floor and wall membranes and tie into wall DPCs and adjacent DPMs. Protect the completed membrane immediately with a protection board or screed before backfilling or fixing reinforcement, and never leave it exposed to traffic or UV longer than necessary. Where ground gas is suspected, confirm with a survey and switch to Proofex 3000MR rather than relying on the standard grade.

How we position Fosroc Proofex 3000
Proofex 3000 sits in the self-adhesive, cold-applied tanking tier of the Fosroc waterproofing range — a step up in installation safety and speed from brush-applied coatings, and the natural pre-applied alternative for Type A barrier work. Within the Fosroc family it cross-links closely to Proofex 3000MR (the methane- and radon-resistant grade for gas-affected ground), Proofex Engage (a pre-applied HDPE membrane that bonds to subsequently poured concrete, ideal for blinding-level and zero-clearance applications), and liquid systems such as Nitoproof and the Brushbond range where a seamless coating suits complex geometry. Specifiers typically pair it with Proofex Primer and Fosroc protection boards, and with Conbextra grouts and Nitobond bonding aids at construction-joint and repair interfaces. Against the wider Indian market, credible alternatives a consultant may evaluate include Sika’s self-adhesive and pre-applied membranes (e.g. the SikaProof and Sikaplan lines), Dr. Fixit’s torch-on and self-adhesive bituminous membranes, STP’s HDPE and APP membrane systems, and MBS (MB Sealants/MYK) tanking products. Proofex 3000’s differentiators are the cross-laminated HDPE construction, the fully-bonded self-adhesive seal that blocks lateral water tracking, recognised BS 8102 Type A and BRE 211 radon credentials, and BBA certification. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can supply the membrane with the matched primer and accessories, and advise on grade selection (standard vs 3000MR vs Proofex Engage) based on your ground investigation.
