About Fosroc Proofex Torchseal 3PI Standard

Fosroc Proofex Torchseal 3PI Standard is a factory-made, torch-applied bituminous waterproofing membrane from the wider Proofex Torchseal range. It is manufactured from premium-grade, heavily modified bitumen using APP (atactic polypropylene) polymer modification, and is reinforced internally with a non-woven polyester fabric carrier. The “3P” denotes the 3 mm polyester-reinforced grade, “I” the India specification, and “Standard” the plain-finish option supplied without a mineral, slate or foil top surface. The polyester core is the heart of the product — it gives the membrane its dimensional stability, high tensile and tear strength, generous elongation and resistance to piercing, while the APP-modified bitumen compound provides the actual waterproofing mass and broad thermal stability.

In Indian construction, prefabricated torch-on membranes occupy a distinct niche from liquid-applied and crystalline systems. Because the membrane arrives at a controlled, factory-set thickness, a 3 mm Proofex Torchseal 3PI Standard sheet guarantees a consistent waterproof film thickness across the whole area — something brush- or spray-applied coatings struggle to ensure on large slabs, especially on site in monsoon conditions. This makes 3PI Standard a workhorse choice for repetitive, large-area horizontal waterproofing: terrace roofs, sunken slabs, stilt and basement rafts, sewage and water-retaining structures, and infrastructure such as ROBs, tunnels and metro subways where buried concrete must be protected from ingress and from aggressive sulphate or chloride-laden ground water.

The “Standard” plain variant is intended to receive a protective screed, board or backfill, so it is normally used where the membrane is sandwiched or buried rather than left permanently UV-exposed. For permanently exposed roofs, mineral- or aluminium-faced grades from the same Torchseal family are preferred. Space Arc Engineering supplies Proofex Torchseal 3PI Standard as an authorised Fosroc distributor, with applicator support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

The technical insight

The performance distinction between an APP membrane like Proofex Torchseal 3PI and an SBS membrane lies in the polymer used to modify the bitumen. APP (atactic polypropylene) is a plastomeric modifier — it raises the softening point (around 150 degrees C per ASTM D36) and gives excellent heat and UV stability, making the compound well suited to hot Indian climates and to torch application, where the surface bitumen is melted to bond the sheet. The trade-off is lower low-temperature flexibility than elastomeric SBS membranes; 3PI Standard is rated for no cracking down to 0 degrees C, which is comfortable for almost all of India’s plains but is why pure APP grades are less favoured in genuinely sub-zero hill climates. The non-woven polyester reinforcement (a spunbond carrier, typically around 160 GSM for this grade) is deliberately chosen over glass fibre because polyester elongates with the bitumen rather than fracturing, allowing the membrane to bridge minor shrinkage cracks and accommodate substrate movement. This combination — high softening point, plastomeric heat resistance and an extensible polyester core — is what makes the sheet a durable buried-tanking membrane in aggressive ground-water conditions.

Where it is used

  • Waterproofing of concrete terrace and roof slabs under protective screed
  • Sunken slabs of toilets, bathrooms and utility areas
  • Shallow basement and raft tanking (horizontal and turned-up vertical faces)
  • Car park, podium and plaza deck slabs prior to wearing course
  • Water-retaining and below-ground retaining structures
  • Sewage treatment plant and effluent tank external tanking
  • Tunnels, subways, underpasses and ROB/RUB buried decks
  • Foundations and grade slabs in sulphate- or chloride-bearing soils

Key advantages

  • Factory-controlled 3 mm thickness ensures a uniform waterproof film over the whole area
  • High-strength non-woven polyester core gives excellent puncture, tear and stress resistance
  • Good elongation allows the membrane to bridge minor shrinkage cracks and follow contours
  • High softening point (~150 deg C) suits hot Indian climates and resists summer-slab temperatures
  • Proven chemical resistance, suitable for tanking in aggressive ground-water conditions
  • Fully torch-bonded to the substrate, eliminating lateral water tracking behind the membrane
  • Fast, repeatable application on large flat areas with predictable coverage and cost
  • Rot-proof polyester reinforcement resists biological degradation in buried service

Limitations & considerations

  • Plain ‘Standard’ finish is not UV-stable; it must be screeded, boarded or backfilled and is not for permanent exposure
  • Requires open-flame torching — needs skilled applicators, fire precautions and is unsuitable near flammable materials or in confined unventilated spaces
  • Lower low-temperature flexibility than SBS membranes (rated to ~0 deg C), so less ideal for genuinely sub-zero hill regions
  • Substrate must be sound, dry, primed and properly prepared; poor surface prep causes debonding and blisters
  • Detailing at upstands, drains, pipe penetrations and corners is labour-intensive and must be done correctly to avoid leaks
  • Cannot be applied during rain or on damp/green concrete; weather-window dependent
  • Overlaps and seams are the most vulnerable points and demand careful melt-welding and inspection

Selection & best practice

Prime the cured, dry, dust-free concrete with a compatible bitumen primer (such as Fosroc Proofex Primer) and allow it to become touch-dry before torching. Lay membranes shingle-fashion working to falls, with minimum 100 mm side laps and 150 mm end laps, staggering end joints. Heat the underside of the roll and the substrate together until a small bead of molten bitumen flows ahead of the roll, then press the sheet firmly to exclude air. Seal all laps until bitumen visibly exudes, then trowel-seal the edge. Turn the membrane up adjoining vertical faces and terminate into a chase or with a metal flashing. Always protect the finished ‘Standard’ membrane promptly with a screed, protection board or backfill, and carry out a flood test on horizontal areas before covering.

Frequently asked questions

Is Proofex Torchseal 3PI Standard an APP or SBS membrane?
It is an APP (atactic polypropylene) modified bitumen membrane. APP modification gives a high softening point (around 150 degrees C) and strong heat and UV stability, which suits hot Indian climates and torch application. If you specifically need very low-temperature flexibility for a cold hill region, discuss SBS-modified alternatives with our team.
What does ‘3PI Standard’ mean and how is it different from mineral or foil-faced Torchseal?
‘3P’ is the 3 mm polyester-reinforced grade, ‘I’ is the India specification and ‘Standard’ is the plain-finish version with no top surfacing. Because it is unfaced it is not UV-stable and must be covered by a screed, protection board or backfill. Mineral- or aluminium-faced grades in the same range are used where the membrane stays permanently exposed.
Can it be used for basement and below-ground tanking?
Yes. The polyester core gives high puncture resistance and the APP compound offers chemical resistance, making 3PI Standard suitable for shallow basement tanking and buried structures, including sites with aggressive ground water. It must be properly lapped, turned up vertical faces and protected before backfilling.
What is the coverage and roll size?
It is supplied in rolls 10 m long by 1 m wide. After deducting side laps (minimum 100 mm) and end laps (minimum 150 mm), the effective coverage is slightly less than the 10 square metres of nominal roll area, so allow for laps and wastage when estimating quantities.
Does the surface need priming before torch application?
Yes. The concrete must be sound, cured, dry and dust-free, and primed with a compatible bitumen primer such as Fosroc Proofex Primer. Priming improves adhesion and reduces the risk of blistering and debonding. The membrane should never be torched onto damp or green concrete or during rain.
How does it compare with liquid-applied membranes like Dr. Fixit or Sika coatings?
Torch-on sheets give a guaranteed factory thickness and are very economical on large flat areas, whereas liquid coatings (Dr. Fixit, Sika, STP) are seamless and easier around complex detailing. Many projects use both — torch-on for big horizontal expanses and a liquid system at intricate junctions. We can advise on the most cost-effective combination for your project.
Is Space Arc an authorised Fosroc supplier for this product?
Yes. Space Arc Engineering is an authorised Fosroc distributor supplying genuine Proofex Torchseal 3PI Standard with batch traceability, technical data sheets and applicator support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

How we position Fosroc Proofex Torchseal 3PI Standard

Within the Fosroc Proofex Torchseal family, the 3PI Standard sits as the entry plain-finish 3 mm polyester grade. Step up to the 4 mm 4P grade for heavier-duty buried tanking and greater puncture margin, or to mineral/slate (3S/4S) and aluminium-faced variants where the membrane stays permanently exposed; the 3PV is a glass-tissue variant for lighter duty. Pair it with Fosroc Proofex Primer for adhesion and Fosroc Nitoproof or Brushbond liquid systems for complex detailing. Against the wider market, APP torch-on sheets compete with self-adhesive and SBS membranes from Sika (Sikaplan / SikaBit), STP (Insuboard / torch-on lines), MBS, and with liquid systems such as Dr. Fixit and Sika’s acrylic/PU coatings. The honest positioning: Proofex Torchseal 3PI Standard is a proven, cost-effective choice for large-area horizontal and buried waterproofing in hot climates, but for genuinely sub-zero regions an SBS membrane, and for highly detailed or thin sections a liquid-applied system, may serve better. Space Arc can specify the right system per application rather than forcing a single product across the whole job.
