What is it?

A liquid-applied, cold-applied bituminous primer that prepares concrete and screed surfaces to receive Fosroc Proofex sheet and torch-on waterproofing membranes.

Where is it used?

Basement rafts and retaining walls, podium decks, terrace and roof slabs, water tanks, tunnels, car-park decks and foundations, anywhere a Proofex membrane is bonded to a cementitious substrate.

Why use it?

It seals surface dust and porosity, develops a tacky key, and gives the bituminous membrane a reliable, continuous bond so the waterproofing system performs as designed.

How is it applied?

Brush, roller or spray a single even coat onto a clean, dry, sound substrate at roughly 5-6 m2 per litre depending on porosity, then allow it to dry tack-free before torching or rolling the membrane onto it.

About Fosroc Proofex Tackcoat

Fosroc Proofex Tackcoat is the priming layer that makes a Proofex membrane waterproofing system work. On its own it does not waterproof anything; its job is to bind the loose surface of a concrete or screed substrate and to present a uniformly tacky bituminous film that the membrane can grip. Without a correctly primed surface, bituminous sheet membranes tend to debond, blister or channel water along the interface, so the tack coat is the small detail that decides whether the larger waterproofing investment lasts.

The material is a single-component, cold-applied bituminous primer. Solvent-borne and water-based (WB) versions exist across Fosroc regions, and both are simply brushed, rolled or sprayed straight from the container with no mixing, heating or catalysts. It is formulated to wet out and penetrate cementitious pores, lock down fine dust, and then flash off to a tack-free yet receptive film. Because it is applied cold, there is no kettle, no LPG flame at the priming stage and no hot-bitumen handling, which suits crowded urban basement sites and occupied buildings across Delhi NCR.

In an Indian construction sequence, Proofex Tackcoat sits between substrate preparation and membrane laying. The concrete is cured, dried and made good; the tack coat is applied at about 5-6 m2 per litre according to how porous and rough the surface is; and once it is touch-dry the crew lays the membrane, typically a Proofex Torchseal APP/SBS torch-on sheet or a self-adhesive Proofex sheet. The primer is compatible with the full Proofex sheet membrane range, which is why specifiers treat it as the default primer wherever a Proofex bituminous membrane is called up rather than mixing primers from different brands. For Space Arc Engineering clients this matters commercially as well as technically: keeping the primer, the membrane and the protection board within one warranted Fosroc system protects the single-point manufacturer backing that PMC and structural consultants increasingly demand on basement and podium packages.

The technical insight

The function of a tack coat is interfacial, not structural, so the key variable is the state of the film at the moment the membrane goes down. The primer must be dry enough that solvent or water has flashed off (a wet film traps volatiles that later blister under a torched membrane) yet still tacky enough to grip. This is the practical reason Fosroc instructs applicators to apply at roughly 5-6 m2 per litre and to let it dry tack-free before laying the membrane rather than working to a fixed clock time. Porosity drives consumption: a smooth power-floated slab may take well under one coat’s worth, while a rough or sand-screeded surface drinks the primer and needs the heavier end of the coverage band, or a second pass over the thirstiest patches. Drying time itself is governed by ambient temperature and humidity, so in a closed Delhi basement in monsoon the tack-free window stretches, whereas on an exposed summer roof it shortens; crews should test by touch rather than assume. The cold, single-component bituminous chemistry is also what makes the product compatible with torch-on membranes: the dried bitumen film softens and fuses with the molten underside of an APP or SBS sheet during torching, creating a continuous bituminous bond instead of a mechanical lap. Solvent-borne grades carry a flash point and demand ventilation and ignition control, which is precisely why the water-based WB grade exists for confined or fire-sensitive spaces.

Where it is used

  • Priming concrete basement rafts and retaining walls before Proofex torch-on or self-adhesive membranes
  • Podium decks and terrace/roof slabs ahead of bituminous sheet waterproofing
  • Priming screeds and renders to receive Proofex sheet membranes
  • Foundations, pile caps and below-grade structures requiring tanking
  • Water-retaining and water-excluding structures lined with Proofex membranes
  • Tunnels, subways and underground civil works
  • Car-park decks and bridge approach slabs prior to membrane application
  • Sealing porous and dusty cementitious surfaces to improve membrane adhesion

Key advantages

  • Cold-applied straight from the container, with no kettle, flame or hot bitumen at the priming stage
  • Single-component and ready to use, so no mixing, heating or catalyst errors on site
  • Develops a continuous bond between concrete and Proofex bituminous membranes, reducing debonding and blistering
  • Compatible with the full Proofex sheet and torch-on membrane range, keeping the system within one warranted Fosroc package
  • Penetrates and binds surface dust and porosity, stabilising the substrate for membrane laying
  • Applied by brush, roller or spray, allowing fast coverage of large decks and basements
  • Dries quickly to a tack-free film, accelerating the membrane installation sequence
  • Water-based (WB) grade available for confined or fire-sensitive interiors

Limitations & considerations

  • A primer only; it provides no waterproofing on its own and must be overlaid with a Proofex membrane
  • Coverage varies significantly with substrate porosity, so 5-6 m2/litre is a guide, not a fixed quantity
  • Substrate must be sound, clean and dry; it will not bond to laitance, dust, oil or visibly damp surfaces
  • Drying to tack-free depends on temperature and humidity, lengthening in closed monsoon basements
  • Solvent-borne grades are flammable and require ventilation and ignition control during application and drying
  • Not a crack-bridging or repair product; structural defects and active leaks must be addressed first
  • Performance is tied to correct membrane selection and detailing; the primer cannot compensate for a poorly laid membrane
  • Exact pack sizes, flash point and grade availability differ by region and must be confirmed against the local datasheet

Selection & best practice

Always confirm the substrate is structurally sound, fully cured, dust-free and surface-dry before priming; remove laitance by mechanical preparation and make good honeycombing with a Renderoc/Nitomortar repair mortar first. Apply Proofex Tackcoat in one even coat at the porosity-adjusted rate of roughly 5-6 m2/litre, working the primer into the surface and giving thirsty or rough areas a second pass. Let the film dry to tack-free, judged by touch rather than the clock, then lay the matching Proofex membrane the same day before fresh dust or moisture settles. For enclosed basements or interiors specify the water-based WB grade, ventilate the space and keep ignition sources away when using solvent grades. Treat the primer, membrane and protection board as one Fosroc system to retain the manufacturer warranty, and request the current India datasheet and SDS from Space Arc Engineering so coverage, drying and safety data match the exact grade supplied.

Frequently asked questions

Is Proofex Tackcoat a waterproofing product on its own?
No. It is a primer or tack coat only. Its purpose is to bond a Proofex sheet or torch-on membrane to the concrete substrate. The waterproofing is provided by the membrane laid over it, so the tack coat must always be overlaid with the appropriate Proofex membrane.
How much Proofex Tackcoat do I need per square metre?
Fosroc indicates a guide rate of about 5-6 m2 per litre, but actual consumption depends heavily on how porous and rough the surface is. Smooth power-floated slabs use less, while rough or screeded surfaces use more and may need a second pass on the thirstiest areas.
Is it solvent-based or water-based?
Both exist. Fosroc offers a conventional solvent-borne bituminous grade and a water-based grade, Proofex Tackcoat WB. The WB grade is preferred in confined basements and fire-sensitive interiors; confirm which grade Space Arc supplies and follow its specific datasheet and SDS.
How long does it take to dry before I can lay the membrane?
It should be allowed to dry to a tack-free state before the membrane is applied, judged by touch rather than a fixed time. Drying is faster in warm, dry, ventilated conditions and slower in closed monsoon basements, so always test the film before laying the membrane.
Which membranes is it compatible with?
It is designed for the full Fosroc Proofex sheet and torch-on membrane range, including the Proofex Torchseal APP/SBS membranes and self-adhesive Proofex sheets. Keeping the primer and membrane within one Fosroc system also protects the manufacturer warranty.
Can it be used on a damp surface?
No. The substrate must be sound, clean, dust-free and surface-dry. Priming over laitance, oil, dust or visibly damp concrete leads to poor adhesion and trapped moisture that can blister a torched membrane. Surfaces should be prepared and made good before priming.

How we position Fosroc Proofex Tackcoat

Proofex Tackcoat is the dedicated primer for Fosroc’s Proofex bituminous membrane systems, so on a Fosroc-specified basement or podium it is the natural first choice alongside Proofex Torchseal membranes and the Proofex Protection Board. Within Space Arc Engineering’s Fosroc range it pairs with the Proofex membrane family and Renderoc/Nitomortar repair mortars used to make good the substrate beforehand; for liquid-applied alternatives where a sheet membrane is not used, clients often look at Fosroc Brushbond or Polyseal. Against competitor ecosystems, the equivalent primers are Sika’s bituminous membrane primers used with SikaShield/SikaBit, the STP Shalimar bitumen primer paired with their membranes, MBS Mukesh Bitumen self-adhesive system primers, and Dr. Fixit’s bituminous primer used under their membrane range. The honest trade-off: a tack coat is a low-cost commodity layer, and most major bituminous primers perform similarly when applied correctly. The real reason to use Proofex Tackcoat is system integrity, choosing one manufacturer’s primer, membrane and protection board so that adhesion, compatibility and warranty all sit under a single Fosroc specification rather than mixing brands at the most critical interface.
