What is it?

A pre-bagged, single-component, non-shrink cementitious grout blended with selected graded aggregate, formulated by Fosroc for free-flow grouting of large areas and thick sections where ordinary fine-filled grouts would generate excessive heat or cost.

Where is it used?

Heavy machine foundations, large stanchion and column base plates, crane and transporter rails, turbine and compressor bases, bridge bearing seats, precast panel joints and other thick-gap, large-footprint grouting on industrial and infrastructure projects.

Why use it?

It fills wide gaps and large plan areas in a single controlled pour without shrinkage, segregation or bleed, develops high compressive strength, contains no chloride or metallic iron, and the coarse-aggregate blend curbs the exothermic heat and thermal-crack risk that affects neat grouts in thick sections.

How is it applied?

Mixed with a measured quantity of clean water using a forced-action or high-shear paddle mixer to a flowable consistency, then poured or pumped from one side into leak-proof formwork over a pre-soaked, saturated-surface-dry foundation, maintaining a continuous grout front and a hydrostatic head.

About Fosroc Conbextra GPA

Fosroc Conbextra GPA is part of the long-established Conbextra range of cementitious grouts, the most widely specified grout family in Indian civil and structural engineering. The “GPA” designation marks it out from the standard Conbextra GP grouts: where GP, GP1 and GP2 are fine-filled grouts intended for typical base-plate gaps, GPA is an aggregate-filled grout built specifically for large areas and thicker pours. It is supplied as a ready-to-use dry powder that is blended from Portland cement, carefully graded fillers, selected aggregate and chemical additives, and is brought to a free-flowing consistency on site by adding only clean water.

The defining feature of GPA is its graded coarse-aggregate content. In a large or deep grout pocket, a neat cement grout releases a great deal of heat of hydration as it sets; in sections much above 100 mm this can cause thermal gradients and micro-cracking, and it also makes the pour expensive because so much binder is consumed. By carrying a proportion of inert aggregate, GPA reduces the binder fraction per unit volume, lowers the peak exotherm, improves volume yield and economy, and still delivers a cohesive, non-segregating, non-bleeding grout. A controlled gaseous expansion system compensates for plastic shrinkage and settlement so the hardened grout maintains full, intimate contact across the whole bearing surface — which is what actually transfers load from a machine or column into the foundation.

For contractors, consultants and plant engineers in India, GPA sits in a clear niche. It is the grout you reach for when the area is too large or the section too thick for a standard GP grout to be sensible, but the loading does not justify the cost of an epoxy grout such as Conbextra EP10. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies Conbextra GPA together with the priming, formwork and curing ancillaries needed to place it correctly the first time.

The technical insight

The engineering logic of an aggregate-filled grout like Conbextra GPA is the same principle that distinguishes Fosroc’s own Conbextra TS (the company’s published large-gap aggregate grout, rated to BS EN 1504-3 Class R4, 75 to 500 mm). Adding graded aggregate to a cementitious grout does three things at once. First, it cuts the cement paste fraction, so the heat liberated during hydration per litre of placed grout drops sharply — critical when a pour is hundreds of millimetres deep, because a steep internal-to-surface temperature gradient is what cracks thick neat-grout sections. Second, the low water:powder ratio that aggregate grouts run at (Fosroc’s comparable TS grout is mixed at around 0.13, far below a neat grout’s ~0.18) keeps capillary porosity low, which is what underpins both high strength and durability. Third, the inert filler resists the segregation and bleed that would otherwise plague a highly fluid mix, so the grout stays homogeneous from the pour point to the far edge of a large plate. The trade-off engineers must respect is geometric: because it carries aggregate, GPA needs a minimum gap and is unsuitable for the thin 10–40 mm precision gaps where a fine grout such as Conbextra GP or a flowable EP epoxy belongs. Place it where the section is genuinely thick, keep the placement continuous to avoid cold joints, and always provide restraint — like every cementitious grout, its non-shrink behaviour depends on confinement and it must never be cast in a free, unrestrained condition.

Where it is used

  • Grouting large and heavy machine foundations such as compressors, crushers, mills, presses and generator sets
  • Filling thick gaps beneath large structural steel stanchion and column base plates
  • Bedding crane rails, transporter rails and gantry tracks subject to repetitive dynamic loading
  • Grouting turbine, pump and reciprocating-machinery bases in power and process plant
  • Filling wide joints between precast concrete panels and large void sections
  • Seating bridge bearings and other heavy infrastructure bearing plates
  • Large-area structural grouting on industrial floors, plinths and equipment rafts
  • First- and second-stage grouting of holding-down bolt pockets in sizeable foundations

Key advantages

  • Non-shrink: gaseous expansion in the plastic state compensates for shrinkage and settlement, maintaining full bearing contact
  • Aggregate-filled blend reduces heat of hydration and thermal-cracking risk in thick sections
  • Economical and high-yield for large pours because aggregate lowers binder content per unit volume
  • High compressive strength for sustained heavy and dynamic loads
  • Chloride-free and contains no metallic iron, so it will not stain or corrode embedded steel
  • Cohesive mix resists segregation and bleed even at flowable consistency
  • Pre-bagged single component eliminates site batching errors and gives consistent results
  • Can be poured or pumped, suiting large-footprint placements

Limitations & considerations

  • Not suitable for thin precision gaps — aggregate content requires a minimum section thickness; use Conbextra GP/GP2 or an epoxy grout for narrow gaps
  • Must be placed in a restrained/confined condition; never cast in a free, unrestrained situation or cracking can develop
  • Cementitious chemistry offers lower chemical resistance than epoxy grouts such as Conbextra EP10 in aggressive or solvent-exposed environments
  • Performance depends on correct water dosage — over-watering reduces strength and can cause bleed and segregation
  • Requires a pre-soaked, saturated-surface-dry substrate and leak-proof formwork; poor preparation compromises bond
  • Strength gain and working time are temperature sensitive and need hot- and cold-weather precautions on Indian sites
  • Large pours demand adequate mixing capacity and a continuous, well-organised placement to avoid cold joints

Selection & best practice

Mechanically scabble and clean the foundation to a sound, laitance-free surface, blow out all bolt pockets, then pre-soak the area with clean water for at least a few hours and remove standing water so the substrate is saturated-surface-dry before grouting. Build rigid, leak-proof formwork and add only the manufacturer-specified quantity of clean water, mixing with a forced-action or high-shear paddle mixer (not a colloidal impeller) until uniform; never add extra water to improve flow. Pour or pump from one side only, keeping a continuous grout front and a hydrostatic head so air is driven ahead of the grout and not trapped. Plan large pours so mixing keeps pace with placement and the whole area is filled in one continuous operation. Cure exposed surfaces with Fosroc Concure curing membrane or wet hessian, and apply hot- or cold-weather measures as required. Always confirm gap thickness, dosage and strength against the current region-specific Fosroc TDS for your market before specifying.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Conbextra GPA a cementitious or epoxy grout?
It is a cementitious grout. Per Fosroc’s product information it is a non-shrink, aggregate-filled, cement-based grout for large areas — not an epoxy. For chemically aggressive duty or thin high-strength gaps you would instead consider an epoxy grout such as Conbextra EP10.
How is Conbextra GPA different from Conbextra GP and GP2?
GP, GP1 and GP2 are fine-filled grouts for typical base-plate gaps and precision grouting. GPA carries selected graded aggregate, which makes it suited to large areas and thicker sections — it improves yield and economy on big pours and reduces the heat build-up and thermal-cracking risk that affects neat grouts in deep sections.
What gap thickness and area is GPA meant for?
It is intended for large-area and thick-section grouting rather than thin gaps. Because it contains aggregate it needs a minimum section depth; for narrow gaps (roughly 10–40 mm) use a fine grout like Conbextra GP/GP2 or an epoxy. Always confirm the exact minimum and maximum thickness on the current region-specific Fosroc TDS for your project.
How much water do I add and how is it mixed?
Add only the clean-water quantity specified on the product’s datasheet for the consistency you need, and mix with a forced-action or high-shear paddle mixer until uniform. Do not add extra water to ease flow — over-watering reduces strength and can cause bleed and segregation. Confirm the exact dosage per bag on the current TDS.
Does it stain or corrode embedded steel?
No. Conbextra GPA is chloride-free and contains no metallic iron, so it will not cause iron staining or chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement or embedded fixings — an important advantage over older iron-filing-based grouts.

How we position Fosroc Conbextra GPA

Within the Fosroc grout range, Conbextra GPA occupies the large-area, thick-section niche of the cementitious family. For standard base-plate and precision gaps you would specify Conbextra GP, GP1 or GP2; for the highest-strength flowable cementitious duty there is Conbextra GP2 / GP3; and the closest published sibling to GPA is Conbextra TS, Fosroc’s aggregate-filled grout rated to BS EN 1504-3 Class R4 for very wide 75–500 mm gaps. Where chemical resistance, ultra-thin gaps or extreme dynamic fatigue govern, the epoxy Conbextra EP grouts (such as EP10) are the step up, at higher cost. Against competitor systems commonly seen on Indian tenders, GPA competes with Sika’s non-shrink cementitious grouts (e.g. SikaGrout series), MYK Schomburg / MBS and BASF Master Builders Solutions (MasterFlow) grouts, STP and Dr. Fixit non-shrink grouts; these are credible equivalents and the right choice often comes down to availability, approved-vendor lists and the specific strength, gap and exotherm requirements of the pour. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering positions GPA where it genuinely fits — economical, low-exotherm, non-shrink grouting of large machine foundations and thick sections — and will recommend the correct alternative within the Conbextra range when the geometry or chemistry calls for it.
