Fosroc Conbextra GV
Shrinkage-compensated, low-exotherm cementitious grout engineered for deep-section and high-volume precision pours above 70 mm.
What is it?
A single-component, pre-blended shrinkage-compensated cementitious grout (Portland cement, graded aggregates and expansion-controlling additives) formulated specifically for deep-section, high-volume free-flow grouting where pour depths exceed roughly 70 mm.
Where is it used?
Heavy machine base plates, turbine and compressor foundations, bridge and structural bearings, crane rails, anchor bolt pockets and deep void filling across industrial, power, infrastructure and precast projects.
Why use it?
Its low heat of hydration (low exotherm) controls the thermal-cracking risk that ordinary grouts face in thick lifts, while built-in expansion compensates for plastic shrinkage to maintain full bearing contact under load.
How is it applied?
Gauge a 25 kg bag with the specified clean water, mix to a free-flowing consistency with a slow-speed paddle, then pour or pump continuously from one side into a pre-soaked, formworked gap to expel air and avoid cold joints.
About Fosroc Conbextra GV
Fosroc Conbextra GV is a factory-blended, shrinkage-compensated cementitious grout from the well-established Conbextra family of precision grouts. It is supplied as a ready-to-use dry powder — a controlled blend of Portland cement, carefully graded fillers and proprietary chemical additives — that needs only the addition of clean water on site to produce a high-strength, free-flowing, self-levelling grout. The defining characteristic of the GV grade within the Conbextra range is that it is purpose-built for deep and high-volume pours, typically where the section thickness or gap depth is greater than about 70 mm, a band where general-purpose grades such as Conbextra GP (rated for roughly 10–75 mm) reach their practical limit.\n\nWhat makes thick-section grouting difficult is heat. As a cementitious grout cures it releases heat of hydration, and in a deep pour that heat cannot escape easily, building up an internal temperature peak that can cause differential expansion and thermal cracking once the mass cools. Conbextra GV is engineered with low exothermicity precisely to manage this — the formulation moderates peak temperatures so that large, monolithic lifts can be placed in a single operation without the cracking and loss of bearing that would otherwise force a contractor to pour in multiple thin layers. At the same time, the grout retains the excellent initial flow and flow retention of the Conbextra range, so it travels freely under and around base plates and into congested anchor pockets, displacing air and achieving close to full effective bearing area beneath the supported plant.\n\nThe grout is shrinkage-compensated: a controlled expansion while the material is still plastic offsets the natural drying and plastic shrinkage of cementitious systems, keeping the hardened grout in firm, positive contact with both the substrate and the underside of the bedded plate. It is chloride-free, which matters where the grout is in contact with reinforcement or pre-stressing steel, and it develops high early and ultimate strengths so that equipment can be commissioned quickly. For Indian contractors, consultants and procurement teams, GV is the grade to specify when the job involves a genuinely deep void rather than a thin bedding layer — the situations where reaching for a standard grout would invite heat and shrinkage problems.
The technical insight
The engineering value of Conbextra GV lies in how it reconciles two competing demands of deep-section grouting: it must flow freely enough to fill a large, often congested void in one continuous pour, yet cure without the thermal damage that thick cementitious masses are prone to. The graded filler system gives a cohesive, non-segregating, non-bleeding mix even at high water-to-powder consistencies, so a deep lift stays homogeneous from top to bottom rather than bleeding water to the surface and leaving a weak, porous zone under the plate. The low-exotherm chemistry then keeps the internal temperature rise in check, which is the single most important factor when you increase pour depth — a grout that performs perfectly at 30 mm can crack badly at 150 mm purely on thermal grounds. Expansion is delivered while the grout is plastic, so it compensates for settlement and plastic shrinkage and consolidates the mass against escape of air, helping achieve a high percentage of effective bearing area, which is the real load-transfer metric that machinery foundations are judged on. Because the product is pre-blended, site variability is minimised — the contractor controls only water dosage and mixing discipline, not the cement-aggregate ratio — making quality far more repeatable than a site-batched sand-cement grout.
Where it is used
- Deep grouting beneath heavy machine base plates where the gap exceeds ~70 mm
- Foundations for turbines, compressors, pumps, generators and reciprocating equipment that demand low-exotherm thick pours
- Bridge bearings and structural bearing seatings requiring full, void-free contact
- Crane rail and gantry rail bedding subject to dynamic and impact loads
- Anchor bolt pockets and holding-down bolt fixing in deep recesses
- Filling deep voids, recesses and pockets in concrete and precast elements
- Heavy-duty structural support and underpinning where high early strength shortens downtime
Key advantages
- Low exothermicity allows large, deep pours to be placed in a single lift without thermal cracking
- Excellent initial flow and flow retention for filling congested, deep voids by pour or pump
- Shrinkage-compensated — plastic expansion maintains positive bearing contact under the plate
- High early strength shortens the wait before equipment can be loaded and commissioned
- Pre-blended single component — only clean water added on site, giving consistent, repeatable quality
- Chloride-free, so safe in contact with embedded reinforcement and stressing steel
- Cohesive, non-segregating and non-bleeding mix maintains uniform strength through the full depth
- Self-levelling, reducing the labour and finishing effort needed on large bedding areas
Limitations & considerations
- Optimised for deep sections — for thin bedding layers below ~70 mm a general-purpose grade such as Conbextra GP is more appropriate
- As a cementitious grout it is not designed for aggressive chemical exposure, high-temperature service or heavy dynamic-fatigue duty where an epoxy grout (e.g. Conbextra EP / Nitogrout EP) would be specified
- Water dosage must be controlled strictly — over-watering reduces strength and can cause bleeding and segregation
- Requires leak-tight formwork and continuous single-direction placement to avoid air entrapment and cold joints
- Substrate and formwork should be saturated surface-dry beforehand to prevent the deep pour from losing water
- Cold or very hot ambient conditions affect flow, set and strength gain and call for standard hot/cold-weather grouting precautions
- Flow life is finite — once mixed it must be placed promptly before flow retention is lost
- Not a structural repair mortar or a free-standing concrete; it must be confined within a void or formwork
Selection & best practice
Confirm the void depth first: specify Conbextra GV only where the section is genuinely deep (roughly above 70 mm) — for shallower beddings choose Conbextra GP. Prepare the substrate to a sound, clean, roughened, saturated surface-dry condition and pre-soak it so the thick pour does not lose water to dry concrete. Build leak-tight formwork with a head box and an air-escape side, leaving generous clearance on the pour side. Add the powder to the measured clean water (not the reverse) and mix with a slow-speed drill and paddle for 4–5 minutes to a lump-free, free-flowing consistency, keeping strictly to the recommended water dosage. Pour or pump continuously from one side only so the grout advances as a single front and drives air ahead of it — never pour from opposite sides or in interrupted batches, which traps air and forms cold joints. Maintain a positive grout head throughout. Cure the exposed surfaces with wet hessian or a curing compound, and observe normal hot- and cold-weather grouting precautions. Always work to the current Fosroc Technical Data Sheet for the exact water content, flow and strength figures of the batch supplied.

How we position Fosroc Conbextra GV
Within the Fosroc Conbextra grout family, Conbextra GV is the deep-pour, low-exotherm specialist: where Conbextra GP covers everyday bedding gaps of roughly 10–75 mm, GV (and the closely related GV08 grade) is built for sections above ~70 mm that would otherwise crack from heat of hydration. Where corrosive chemicals, elevated temperatures or heavy dynamic fatigue rule out a cementitious grout, the natural step up is an epoxy grade such as Fosroc Conbextra EP; for free-flow general grouting and anchoring, Conbextra GP and the Nitogrout/Lokfix anchoring systems complete the range. Against the wider Indian market, Conbextra GV competes with Sika’s deep-pour grouts (the SikaGrout range), MBS/MYK grouts, Dr. Fixit’s Pidiproof/grout solutions and STP’s cementitious grouts — credible alternatives that a consultant may name in a specification. Conbextra GV earns its place on the strength of Fosroc’s long, well-documented track record on Indian power, bridge and industrial projects, its specific low-exotherm deep-pour engineering, and the assurance of a pre-blended product backed by local technical support. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Conbextra GV and the complete Fosroc grouting range across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, helping engineers, contractors and procurement teams match the correct grade — GP, GV, GV08 or an epoxy alternative — to the actual pour depth and service conditions.
