Fosroc Conbextra SS

A pre-packaged, non-shrink cementitious grout for bedding precast units, filling voids and routine grouting – mixed to a trowelable or flowable consistency on site, chloride-free and free of metallic iron.

BrandFosrocCategoryGrouts & AnchorsFormA factory pre-blended, non-shrink cementitious grout (cement, graded fillers and shrinkage-compensating additives)…

What is it?

A factory pre-blended, non-shrink cementitious grout (cement, graded fillers and shrinkage-compensating additives) that is mixed with water on site to either a trowelable or a flowable consistency.

Where is it used?

Bedding of precast concrete units, filling of voids and pockets, and general non-structural to lightly structural grouting on building, precast yard and civil sites across India.

Why use it?

It removes on-site batching error, compensates for plastic shrinkage so voids stay completely filled, and is chloride-free with no metallic iron – so there is no risk of corrosion-driven staining or expansion against embedded steel.

How is it applied?

Add the measured water, mix to the chosen consistency, then trowel, pour or pump into the prepared, pre-soaked gap or pocket within the working time and cure the exposed surface.

About Fosroc Conbextra SS

Fosroc Conbextra SS belongs to the long-established Conbextra family of grouts – the most widely specified grouting range in Indian civil and industrial construction. Unlike the high-strength structural members of that family (Conbextra GP, GP2, HF and the epoxy EP grades used under turbines, generators and heavy base plates), Conbextra SS is positioned as a general-purpose, non-shrink cementitious grout for everyday bedding and void-filling duties where a fully packed, dimensionally stable, non-staining fill matters more than ultimate machine-base strength.

It is supplied as a single-component, pre-weighed dry powder – a blend of cement, selected graded fillers and chemical additives that compensate for the plastic and drying shrinkage normally seen in site-batched sand-cement mortars. Because the proportions are fixed at the factory, the contractor only adds water, which eliminates the most common source of variability on Indian sites: inconsistent hand-gauging of cement, sand and water from one batch to the next. The same bag can be gauged with less water for a stiff, trowelable mortar (for bedding precast panels, dry-packing pockets or repairing voids overhead and vertically) or with more water for a flowable, self-levelling grout that finds its way into restricted gaps and around reinforcement.

Two formulation characteristics define its appeal for precast and finishing work. First, it contains no metallic iron (no iron-filing “expansion” system), so there is no risk of rust staining bleeding through a fair-faced or visible concrete surface. Second, it is chloride-free, which means it can be placed safely in contact with embedded steel, prestressed strand or galvanised fixings without introducing chloride-driven corrosion. The non-shrink additive package ensures the cured grout maintains intimate contact with the surrounding concrete and any embedded item, so load is transferred and water cannot track through a shrinkage gap.

For Space Arc clients in Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Conbextra SS is the practical choice when you need a reliable, repeatable, branded grout for the high-volume “filling and bedding” tasks on a project, while reserving the higher-cost GP, HF or epoxy grades for the comparatively few locations that carry genuine dynamic or heavy static load.

The technical insight

The engineering value of Conbextra SS lies in shrinkage compensation, not headline strength. Ordinary site-batched mortar shrinks as it sets and dries, opening a thin gap at the top of a pocket or under a bedded unit – exactly where you least want it, because that is the load-bearing or water-stopping interface. Conbextra SS uses a controlled-expansion additive system (gas/chemical type rather than metallic iron) so the plastic-state volume is maintained and the void stays packed. Two consistencies come from one bag purely by varying water: a lower water dose gives a cohesive, thixotropic mortar that stays put on vertical and overhead faces, while a higher water dose gives a pourable grout – but more water always means a weaker, more porous, higher-shrinkage result, so you should use the minimum water that achieves the placement you need. The chloride-free, iron-free chemistry is what separates it from cheap proprietary “grouting compounds”: it is genuinely safe against rebar, prestressing and visible concrete. Because exact compressive-strength, density and yield figures vary by region and revision, the current local Product Data Sheet (PDS) must be used for any structural calculation or method statement rather than assumed values – Space Arc supplies the correct India TDS with every order.

Where it is used

  • Bedding of precast concrete units – panels, planks, copings, kerbs and architectural elements onto a level, gap-filling mortar joint
  • Dry-pack and pocket filling – grouting holding-down bolt pockets, starter-bar pockets and connection sleeves in precast and cast-in-situ work
  • Filling voids and honeycomb pockets behind formwork, around penetrations and at construction joints where a non-shrink fill is required
  • Flowable grouting of narrow gaps and restricted sections where a self-levelling, pumpable consistency reaches areas a trowel cannot
  • General non-structural and lightly loaded grouting on building, finishing and civil sites where a chloride-free, non-staining grout is specified
  • Bedding of base plates, frames and fixtures for static, non-vibrating loads where premium machine-base grout is not warranted

Key advantages

  • Pre-packaged single-component powder – only water is added on site, eliminating batching and proportioning errors
  • Non-shrink: the additive system compensates for shrinkage so voids and gaps stay completely filled and load transfer is maintained
  • Chloride-free – safe in contact with embedded reinforcement, prestressing strand and galvanised fixings
  • Contains no metallic iron, so there is no rust staining on visible or fair-faced concrete surfaces
  • One product, two consistencies – mix trowelable for vertical/overhead and pockets, or flowable for self-levelling pours
  • Cement-based and water-mixed – low cost per litre, familiar handling, no special primers or multi-part mixing for routine work
  • Backed by Fosroc technical literature and supported locally by Space Arc with the correct India TDS, MSDS and site guidance

Limitations & considerations

  • General-purpose grade – not a substitute for high-strength structural machine grouts (Conbextra GP/GP2/HF) or epoxy grouts (Conbextra EP) under dynamic, vibrating or heavy static loads
  • Cementitious, so it is not chemically resistant – avoid for chemical-attack, fuel/oil or strong acid/alkali exposure where an epoxy grout is required
  • Performance is water-sensitive: over-watering to ease placement reduces strength and increases porosity and shrinkage
  • Suitable gap thickness is limited per layer – very wide gaps or large-volume pours may need an aggregate-extended or higher-flow grade (e.g. Conbextra TS) instead
  • Requires a clean, sound, saturated-surface-dry substrate and proper curing; placing on dry, dusty or contaminated surfaces compromises bond
  • Has a defined working time once gauged – the mixed material must be placed before stiffening, which shortens in Indian summer heat
  • Exact published values differ by region and revision; always confirm strength, density and yield against the current local PDS before structural use

Selection & best practice

Prepare the substrate first: the concrete must be sound, clean, free of laitance, oil and dust, and pre-soaked to a saturated-surface-dry (SSD) condition with no standing water in the pocket or gap. Build tight, leak-proof formwork where a flowable pour is used. Gauge with the minimum water that gives the consistency you need – measure the water, never judge by eye – and mix mechanically with a slow-speed drill and paddle to a uniform, lump-free mix; choose the trowelable dose for vertical, overhead and pocket work and the flowable dose only where self-levelling flow is genuinely required. Place within the working time in one continuous operation from one side to avoid trapping air, and for flowable pours maintain a positive grout head. Immediately on finishing, protect and cure the exposed surface (wet hessian, curing membrane or ponding) – cementitious grout that dries out early will craze and lose strength, a real risk in Delhi NCR summers. For any load-bearing or structural location, confirm the required gap thickness, strength and yield against the current Fosroc India PDS before writing the method statement.

Industry use cases

Precast concrete & building

Bedding precast panels, planks, copings and kerbs onto a non-shrink, non-staining mortar joint, and dry-packing connection pockets – high-volume work where repeatable, branded quality beats site-batched mortar.

Residential & commercial construction

Filling voids, honeycombing and bolt/starter-bar pockets, and bedding frames and fixtures for static loads, with a chloride-free grout that is safe near reinforcement and leaves no rust marks on finished surfaces.

Infrastructure & civil works

General grouting and gap-filling at construction joints and penetrations where a dependable non-shrink cementitious fill is specified, reserving GP/HF/epoxy grades for the genuinely heavy-duty locations.

Architectural & finishing trades

Bedding and void-filling adjacent to fair-faced and exposed concrete where the no-metallic-iron formulation prevents corrosion staining that would otherwise ruin the finish.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Conbextra SS a cementitious or an epoxy grout?
It is a cementitious grout – a pre-packaged powder of cement, graded fillers and shrinkage-compensating additives that you mix with water on site. It is not an epoxy or polyester resin grout. For chemical resistance or heavy dynamic loads you would instead use an epoxy grade such as the Conbextra EP series.
What is the difference between Conbextra SS and Conbextra GP / GP2?
Conbextra SS is a general-purpose, non-shrink grout aimed at bedding precast units, filling voids and routine grouting. Conbextra GP, GP2 and HF are higher-strength structural grouts engineered for machine bases, base plates and load-bearing duty. Choose SS for everyday filling and bedding, and the GP/HF grades where genuine dynamic or heavy static load is involved – confirm the required strength against the current PDS.
Can I use the same bag for both trowelling and pouring?
Yes. Conbextra SS is designed to be gauged to either a trowelable (stiff) consistency for vertical, overhead and pocket work, or a flowable (self-levelling) consistency for pours into restricted gaps, simply by adjusting the water added. Always use the minimum water that achieves the placement you need, because extra water reduces strength and increases shrinkage and porosity.
Will it stain or corrode reinforcement?
No. Conbextra SS contains no metallic iron, so it will not produce rust staining on visible concrete, and it is chloride-free, so it is safe in direct contact with embedded reinforcement, prestressing strand and galvanised fixings.
How should the surface be prepared before grouting?
The substrate must be sound, clean and free of laitance, oil, grease and dust, and pre-soaked to a saturated-surface-dry condition with no free-standing water in the pocket or gap. For flowable pours, set up tight, leak-proof formwork. Then place in one continuous operation and cure the exposed surface immediately.

How we position Fosroc Conbextra SS

Conbextra SS sits at the general-purpose end of the Fosroc Conbextra grout range. It is the right pick for high-volume bedding and void-filling, while its stablemates take the heavier duty: Conbextra GP and GP2 for high-strength non-shrink machine and base-plate grouting, Conbextra HF for high-flow precision grouting, Conbextra TS for large-gap and aggregate-extended pours, and the Conbextra EP epoxy grades (and Lokfix/Nitobond systems) where chemical resistance, dynamic load or resin anchoring is required – so a single project can be specified end-to-end within one trusted family. Against the wider Indian market, Conbextra SS competes with Sika’s non-shrink grouts (the SikaGrout line), MYK/MBS-type cementitious grouts, Dr. Fixit grouting compounds and STP/Pidilite construction-grout offerings; all deliver a non-shrink cementitious fill, but Conbextra’s advantage is the depth of the range, consistent factory pre-blending and the breadth of Fosroc field-technical support behind it. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator in Delhi NCR and Pan-India, helps clients match the exact Conbextra grade to the load case, supplies the correct India TDS and MSDS, and avoids the common mistake of over-specifying an expensive epoxy or high-strength grade where a dependable general-purpose grout like Conbextra SS is all the application needs.
