What is it?

A chloride-free, ready-to-use water-reducing admixture (mid-range plasticiser) based on a blend of selected lignosulphonate and hydrolysed carbohydrate materials, supplied as a brown liquid that disperses instantly in the mixing water.

Where is it used?

Site-batched and ready-mix concrete (RMC) where moderate water reduction and reliable workability are needed — foundations, slabs, columns, beams, pavements and concrete containing fly ash (PFA) or slag (GGBS).

Why use it?

It deflocculates cement particles so the same water works harder: contractors can either reduce water at fixed slump to gain strength and durability, or hold water and gain workability and pumpability — while trimming cement content for the same grade.

How is it applied?

Dosed by liquid volume at roughly 0.2–0.5 litres per 100 kg of cementitious material, added with the gauging water (never to dry cement) and confirmed by site trials with the actual mix materials.

About Fosroc Conplast P509

Fosroc Conplast P509 is a normal water-reducing admixture — in plain site language, a mid-range plasticiser — engineered to make ordinary concrete behave better without changing how a crew already batches and places it. Chemically it is a chloride-free blend of selected lignosulphonate and hydrolysed carbohydrate materials, supplied as a brown solution that disperses instantly the moment it meets the mixing water. There is no powder to pre-dissolve and no separate activation step; it goes straight into the gauging water on a batching plant or into the mixer with the water on site.

The mechanism is electrostatic dispersion. Freshly mixed cement grains tend to clump (flocculate), trapping water between them and wasting it. Conplast P509 coats the particles and pushes them apart, freeing that trapped water to lubricate the mix instead. The practical result is a choice for the concrete producer: keep the slump and pull water out — which lifts compressive strength at every age and improves durability — or keep the water and bank the extra workability for easier placing and pumping. In many specifications, P509 lets the same strength grade be reached at a lower cement content, which is where the real cost saving sits.

For Indian conditions, the product earns its place in two situations engineers see daily. First, blended-cement and supplementary-cementitious-material (SCM) concrete: P509 is particularly effective in mixes carrying fly ash (PFA) or ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), which dominate RMC across Delhi NCR and the metros. Second, hot-weather work — Fosroc positions P509 in several markets as a high-performance plasticising admixture for hot climates, where its lignosulphonate base gives a measure of workability retention that bare OPC mixes lack. Because it is genuinely chloride-free, P509 is safe in reinforced and prestressed concrete with no risk of contributing to rebar corrosion.

Space Arc Engineering supplies Conplast P509 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with technical support on dosage trials, mix optimisation and compatibility checks for project teams.

The technical insight

Conplast P509 sits in the lignosulphonate family of water reducers, which behave differently from the polycarboxylate (PCE) chemistry used in modern high-range superplasticisers. The practical consequences matter on site. Water reduction from a lignosulphonate plasticiser is moderate — typically in the high single digits to low teens of percent depending on mix and dosage — not the 20–30% range a PCE superplasticiser delivers; P509 is for general-purpose plasticising, not for self-compacting or very-low-water high-performance concrete. Lignosulphonates also carry an inherent mild set-retarding and slight air-entraining tendency that grows with dosage. That retardation is usually an asset in hot weather, buying placing and finishing time, but it means overdosing is the classic field error: pushing dosage well above the recommended band to chase extra slump can cause noticeable retardation, bleeding or a soft surface, especially in cold conditions or in lean mixes. The correct discipline is to establish dosage by trial with the project’s own cement, aggregates and SCMs, and adjust seasonally rather than treating one figure as fixed. P509 is compatible with other Fosroc admixtures in the same mix — for example a Conplast retarder or an air-entrainer — but each product must be dispensed separately into the concrete and never pre-blended in the same container, because concentrated admixtures can react with one another before they reach the mix.

Where it is used

  • General structural concrete — foundations, footings, columns, beams and suspended slabs where moderate water reduction improves strength and durability
  • Ready-mixed concrete (RMC) production where consistent workability and reduced cement content are commercially important
  • Fly-ash (PFA) and slag (GGBS) blended concrete, where P509 is especially effective at dispersing the finer cementitious particles
  • Hot-weather concreting, using the admixture’s plasticising and mild workability-retention behaviour to ease placing in high ambient temperatures
  • Pumped and placed concrete that needs improved flow and cohesion without adding water at the point of discharge
  • Reinforced and prestressed concrete, taking advantage of the chloride-free formulation for corrosion safety
  • Pavement, raft and large-pour concrete where lower water/cement ratio at workable slump improves long-term performance

Key advantages

  • Chloride-free — safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete with no contribution to reinforcement corrosion
  • Increases compressive strength at all ages when used for water reduction at constant workability
  • Improves workability and placeability when used at constant water content, aiding pumping and finishing
  • Allows the same strength grade to be achieved at reduced cement content, lowering material cost and embodied carbon
  • Particularly effective in concrete containing PFA (fly ash) or GGBS (slag), the dominant blended mixes in India
  • Ready-to-use brown liquid that disperses instantly in the mixing water — no pre-mixing or activation required
  • Improves cohesion and reduces segregation/bleeding tendency at correct dosage, giving denser, more durable concrete
  • Compatible with other Fosroc admixtures (dosed separately) for tailored mix designs

Limitations & considerations

  • A normal (mid-range) water reducer — water-reduction capacity is moderate and well below what a polycarbonate-ether superplasticiser such as Conplast SP430 or Auramix provides
  • Not suitable for self-compacting concrete, very-low-w/c high-performance mixes, or where high slump retention over long haul times is required
  • Lignosulphonate base carries an inherent mild set-retardation that increases with dosage — overdosing can cause excessive retardation, bleeding or surface softness, particularly in cold weather or lean mixes
  • Tends to entrain a small amount of additional air; uncontrolled overdosing can reduce strength
  • Optimum dosage must be established by site trial with the actual cement, aggregates and SCMs — a single quoted figure should not be assumed across all mixes
  • Must be added to the mixing water, not to dry cement, and must not be pre-blended with other admixtures in the same container
  • Performance and set behaviour shift with ambient temperature, so seasonal dosage adjustment is needed

Selection & best practice

Always fix the dosage by laboratory or site trial using the project’s actual cement, fly ash/slag and aggregates before bulk use, starting near the lower end of the 0.2–0.5 litres per 100 kg cementitious band and adjusting to hit the target slump and strength. Add Conplast P509 to the gauging water or into the mixer with the water — never onto dry cement — and dispense it separately from any other admixture rather than pre-mixing them. Use a calibrated dispenser so the liquid dose is accurate batch to batch, and re-check dosage seasonally because the set-retarding effect is stronger in cold weather and weaker in heat. Keep the drums sealed, stored in shade above freezing, and stir or roll any product that has been standing before use. For mixes needing more than moderate water reduction, high slump retention or self-compacting flow, step up to a polycarboxylate superplasticiser (e.g. Conplast SP430 / Auramix range) rather than overdosing P509.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Conplast P509 a superplasticiser?
No. It is a normal (mid-range) water-reducing admixture, or plasticiser, based on lignosulphonate chemistry. It delivers moderate water reduction and improved workability. For high water reduction, high slump retention or self-compacting concrete, a polycarboxylate superplasticiser such as Conplast SP430 is the right choice.
What is the correct dosage of Conplast P509?
A typical starting range is 0.2–0.5 litres per 100 kg of cementitious material (cement plus any fly ash, slag or microsilica), with trials extending up to about 0.6 litres. The exact figure must be confirmed by trial mix with your actual cement, SCMs and aggregates, because dispersion and set behaviour vary by mix and temperature.
Is Conplast P509 safe for reinforced concrete?
Yes. It is genuinely chloride-free, so it does not contribute to reinforcement corrosion and is suitable for both reinforced and prestressed concrete.
Does Conplast P509 retard the setting of concrete?
Lignosulphonate-based plasticisers carry a mild inherent set-retardation that grows with dosage. At correct dosage this is slight and is often useful in hot weather. Overdosing can cause excessive retardation, bleeding or a soft surface, especially in cold conditions, so dosage discipline matters.
Can Conplast P509 be used with other Fosroc admixtures?
Yes — it is compatible with other Fosroc admixtures in the same concrete, for example a separate retarder or air-entrainer. However, each admixture must be dispensed separately into the mix and never pre-blended in the same container.
How is Conplast P509 added to the mix?
Add it to the gauging/mixing water, or into the mixer at the same time as the water — never directly onto dry cement. Use a calibrated dispenser for batch-to-batch accuracy.

How we position Fosroc Conplast P509

Conplast P509 is Fosroc’s general-purpose, chloride-free water-reducing plasticiser — the workhorse for everyday structural and ready-mix concrete where moderate water reduction, dependable workability and lower cement content are the goals, rather than the extreme performance of high-range products. Within the Fosroc range it sits below the polycarboxylate superplasticisers: when a project needs higher water reduction, long slump retention or self-compacting flow, step up to Conplast SP430 or the Auramix PCE range; for purely extended setting time use a Conplast retarder; for air-entrained concrete pair with a Conplast PA-series air-entrainer (dosed separately). It is closely related to its siblings P505 and P510 in the same plasticiser family, differentiated by formulation and climate positioning. Against competitor chemistry, the equivalent normal water reducers in India include Sika’s Plastiment / Plastocrete lignosulphonate plasticisers, MBS (MC-Bauchemie / formerly BASF Master Builders) Pozzolith and MasterPozzolith plasticisers, Dr. Fixit’s Pidicrete admixture line, and STP’s water-reducing admixtures — all credible alternatives for routine mid-range plasticising. P509’s advantages are Fosroc’s TDS-backed consistency, proven behaviour in PFA/GGBS blends, hot-climate positioning and Space Arc Engineering’s authorised supply plus on-site dosage and mix-design support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
