What is it?

A multifunctional, chloride-free water-reducing plasticiser based on a blend of natural and synthetic polymers, part of Fosroc’s Conplast MR (multi-range) series for concrete.

Where is it used?

Ready-mix concrete plants, RCC structural works, pumped and mass concrete, precast and general site batching across building, infrastructure and water-retaining projects.

Why use it?

Cuts mix water by roughly 10-15% at equal workability, raising compressive strength and durability while improving cohesion and pumpability — without changing aggregate or cement proportions.

How is it applied?

Dosed into the concrete at the batching plant or mixer with the gauging water, typically around 0.3-1.0 litre per 100 kg of cementitious material, established by site trials.

About Fosroc Conplast MR320

Fosroc Conplast MR320 is a liquid concrete admixture from the Conplast MR (multi-range) family, formulated as a multifunctional water-reducing plasticiser based on a blend of natural and synthetic polymers. It is engineered for the manufacture of all types of concrete, with a particular focus on ready-mix and structural applications where consistent quality, workability and strength gain matter. Rather than acting purely as a flow aid, MR320 reduces the water demand of the mix so the same workability is achieved with less water — and a lower water/cement ratio is the single most reliable lever for higher strength and lower permeability in concrete.

In practical terms, MR320 lets a producer take one of three routes from the same mix design. Hold the water constant and the concrete becomes more workable and easier to pump and place. Hold the workability constant and reduce the water, and the concrete gains strength and durability. Or trim both water and cement together to cut binder cost while holding strength — the classic ready-mix economy play. Fosroc positions the MR320 grade for a water reduction in the region of 10-15% depending on dosage, mix richness and the fines content of the sand, placing it firmly in the mid-range plasticiser bracket rather than the high-range superplasticiser bracket occupied by the Conplast SP series.

Because it is chloride-free, MR320 is suitable for reinforced, pre-stressed and mass concrete without introducing a corrosion risk to embedded steel — an important point for Indian infrastructure and water-retaining structures. It is also formulated to be compatible with PCE (polycarboxylate ether) based superplasticisers, so producers running mixed admixture regimes can use MR320 as the workhorse plasticiser alongside a high-range PCE for slump retention or very low w/c work, instead of being locked into a single chemistry. For Space Arc Engineering’s clients in Delhi NCR and across India, MR320 is a sensible default plasticiser for everyday structural concrete where the demands of a full superplasticiser are not warranted but the benefits of genuine water reduction clearly are.

The technical insight

The “MR” in Conplast MR320 stands for multi-range, and that label is the real story. A conventional plasticiser conforming to BS EN 934-2 Table 2 only has to deliver a fixed minimum water reduction; a multi-range product is designed so that its performance scales meaningfully with dosage. At a low dose MR320 behaves as an ordinary plasticiser improving workability; pushed to a higher dose it approaches the water-reduction territory of a light superplasticiser. This dosage elasticity is why a single drum can serve several mix designs in a busy ready-mix plant — the operator changes only the admixture rate, not the aggregate or cement. The polymer dispersants work by adsorbing onto cement grains and neutralising the surface charges that cause flocculation; deflocculated cement releases trapped water, so the freed water lubricates the mix and the binder hydrates more completely. The practical consequence engineers should note is that MR320 reduces plastic viscosity as well as yield, which is precisely what makes concrete easier to pump and finish — a viscosity reduction is harder to achieve with older lignosulphonate-only plasticisers. Because it is chloride-free, the water-soluble chloride content is negligible (typically not more than 0.10% for the Conplast plasticiser range), so it does not compromise the durability calculations on which reinforced and pre-stressed members depend.

Where it is used

  • Ready-mixed concrete production where one plasticiser must serve several grades by varying only the dosage
  • Reinforced cement concrete (RCC) for columns, beams, slabs and rafts requiring controlled water/cement ratio
  • Pumped concrete for high-rise and long-distance placement, where reduced viscosity eases pumping
  • Mass concrete pours such as foundations and rafts where chloride-free chemistry and cohesion are important
  • Pre-stressed and post-tensioned elements where chloride-free admixtures are mandatory
  • Water-retaining and water-excluding structures (tanks, basements, treatment works) needing low-permeability concrete
  • Mix designs run alongside a PCE superplasticiser, with MR320 as the base water-reducer for cost and cohesion control

Key advantages

  • Genuine water reduction of around 10-15% lifts compressive strength and lowers permeability without redesigning the mix
  • Multi-range behaviour — one product covers plasticiser to light-superplasticiser duty simply by changing the dose
  • Chloride-free, so safe for reinforced, pre-stressed and mass concrete with no corrosion penalty
  • Reduces plastic viscosity, making concrete markedly easier to pump, place and finish
  • Compatible with PCE-based superplasticisers, allowing flexible dual-admixture regimes
  • Improves cohesion and reduces bleed and segregation, giving a denser, more uniform surface
  • Lets producers cut cement content at constant strength, reducing cost and embodied carbon
  • Conforms to recognised admixture standards (IS 9103, ASTM C494, BS EN 934-2), easing specification approval

Limitations & considerations

  • It is a mid-range plasticiser, not a high-range superplasticiser — for very low w/c (below about 0.40) or self-compacting concrete, pair it with or switch to a Conplast SP/PCE grade
  • Overdosing can cause excessive retardation, bleeding or segregation; the optimum dose must be fixed by trial with the actual job materials
  • Performance varies with cement type, fly ash/GGBS content and sand fines, so a fresh trial mix is needed when materials change
  • Being water-based, it must be protected from freezing in storage and reconstituted per Fosroc guidance if it freezes
  • It does not waterproof concrete by itself — for integral waterproofing use a dedicated product such as Conplast WP or Conplast Crystalline
  • Exact specific gravity, colour and pack data should be read from the current country-specific TDS, as values differ slightly by region and revision

Selection & best practice

Always establish the working dosage by trial mixes using the actual cement, supplementary materials, aggregates and sand for the job, starting near the lower end of the 0.3-1.0 litre per 100 kg of cementitious material range and adjusting to target slump and strength. Add MR320 to the concrete with the final portion of the gauging water — never to dry cement or aggregate — and ensure adequate mixing time for uniform dispersion. Do not exceed the trial-validated dose to chase extra slump, as over-dosing risks retardation and bleeding; for higher water reduction, step up to a Conplast SP superplasticiser instead. Store drums under cover, off the ground and out of direct sun and frost, and stir or recirculate if separation is suspected before use. Keep the current country-specific Fosroc TDS and Declaration of Performance on file for QA and consultant approval.

Industry use cases

Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC)

A single Conplast MR320 supply serves M20 through M40 grades by varying only the admixture dose, simplifying inventory and giving consistent slump and strength across a plant’s daily output.

High-Rise & Pumped Concrete

The viscosity-reducing action eases long vertical and horizontal pumping runs on residential and commercial towers across Delhi NCR, reducing pump pressure and line blockages.

Infrastructure & Foundations

Chloride-free chemistry suits large RCC rafts, pile caps and mass pours where corrosion protection of reinforcement and good cohesion in deep sections are essential.

Water-Retaining Structures

Lowering the water/cement ratio produces denser, less permeable concrete for tanks, STP/ETP structures and basements where water-tightness is specified.

Precast & Structural Elements

Improved cohesion and reduced bleed give cleaner, denser surfaces on precast units and cast-in-situ columns and beams, with strength gain from water reduction.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Conplast MR320 a plasticiser or a superplasticiser?
It is a multi-range water-reducing plasticiser. Its dosage elasticity lets it act as a normal plasticiser at low doses and approach light-superplasticiser water reduction (around 10-15%) at higher doses. For very low water/cement ratios or self-compacting concrete you should use or add a high-range Conplast SP / PCE superplasticiser.
What dosage of Conplast MR320 should I use?
As a starting point for the Conplast MR plasticiser range, trials typically begin around 0.3-1.0 litre per 100 kg of cementitious material. The optimum must be established by trial mixes with your actual cement, additions, aggregate and sand, because performance varies with materials. Always confirm against the current Fosroc TDS for your region.
Is Conplast MR320 chloride-free and safe for reinforced concrete?
Yes. Like the rest of the Conplast MR series it is chloride-free, so it is suitable for reinforced, pre-stressed and mass concrete without introducing a corrosion risk to embedded steel. Water-soluble chloride content for the range is typically not more than 0.10%.
Which standards does Conplast MR320 comply with?
Fosroc’s Conplast admixtures are formulated to recognised standards including IS 9103, ASTM C494 and BS EN 934-2, and a Declaration of Performance (DoP) has been issued specifically for Conplast MR320. For project approval, request the current country-specific TDS and DoP, which state the exact clauses met.
How is Conplast MR320 added to concrete?
It is a liquid admixture dosed into the mix with the final portion of the gauging water, at the batching plant or mixer — never added to dry cement or aggregate. Adequate mixing time ensures uniform dispersion. It must not be used to chase extra slump beyond the trial-validated dose.
Can Conplast MR320 be used with a PCE superplasticiser?
Yes. It is formulated to be compatible with PCE (polycarboxylate ether) based superplasticisers, so it can serve as the base water-reducer in a dual-admixture regime, with a PCE added for slump retention or very low water/cement work. Compatibility should still be verified by trial.
Does Conplast MR320 waterproof concrete?
Not on its own. By reducing the water/cement ratio it produces denser, lower-permeability concrete, which improves water resistance, but it is not an integral waterproofing admixture. For integral waterproofing use a dedicated Fosroc product such as Conplast WP or Conplast Crystalline.

How we position Fosroc Conplast MR320

Within Fosroc’s own range, Conplast MR320 sits in the mid-range of the Conplast MR (multi-range) plasticiser family — a step up in convenience from older Conplast P-series plasticisers and a sibling to grades such as Conplast MR260, MR285 and MR289, while the Conplast SP series (for example SP430, SP500/550) covers true high-range superplasticiser duty for very low water/cement and high-early-strength work. Producers who need integral waterproofing rather than water reduction should look to Conplast WP320, Conplast WL or Conplast Crystalline instead, and corrosion-prone environments may call for Conplast CN. Against competitor products, MR320 competes most directly with mid-range water-reducers such as Sika’s Sikament / Plastiment plasticisers, the MBS (Master Builders / MBS) MasterPozzolith and MasterPolyheed lines, and BASF-lineage plasticisers; for integral or surface waterproofing, brands like Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP are the more common Indian references, though those are a different product category. The honest positioning is that MR320 is an excellent default plasticiser for everyday RCC and ready-mix where genuine water reduction, cohesion and pumpability are wanted and a full superplasticiser would be over-specified — but for self-compacting concrete, very low w/c high-performance mixes, or dedicated waterproofing, it should be paired with or replaced by the appropriate specialist product. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator in Delhi NCR and Pan-India, can supply MR320 alongside the matching SP superplasticiser or Conplast waterproofing grade and advise on trial dosing for the specific mix.
