BrandFosrocCategoryWaterproofingFormA chloride-free liquid integral admixture from Fosroc that gives concrete and mortar a water-repellent (hydrophobic)…

What is it?

A chloride-free liquid integral admixture from Fosroc that gives concrete and mortar a water-repellent (hydrophobic) character, reducing capillary water absorption through the mass of the mix.

Where is it used?

Water-retaining and water-contact structures across India: water tanks, sumps, basements, retaining and underground walls, channels, sewage works, hydraulic structures and precast elements.

Why use it?

It builds waterproofing into the concrete itself rather than relying only on a surface coating, keeps setting time unchanged, contains negligible chloride, and is forgiving of minor over-dosage.

How is it applied?

Dosed into the mixing water at 0.5-2.0% by weight of cement (trial-confirmed) and batched with the concrete or mortar at the mixer; no special surface treatment required.

About Fosroc Conplast WP410F

Fosroc Conplast WP410F is an integral (mass) waterproofing admixture supplied as a chloride-free liquid that is added to concrete and mortar at the time of mixing. Its job is to make the hardened matrix water-repellent: instead of sitting on the surface like a membrane or coating, the active chemistry is distributed throughout the mix, lining the capillary pore network so that liquid water is far less able to migrate into and through the concrete by capillary suction. The result is a denser-behaving, lower-absorption concrete that resists the slow ingress of moisture which, over time, drives efflorescence, dampness, reinforcement corrosion and freeze-thaw distress.

The product belongs to Fosroc’s Conplast range of concrete admixtures and is positioned specifically as a “WP” (water-proofing) grade rather than a plasticiser or set-modifier. Two characteristics matter most for the specifier. First, it does not alter setting time, so it can be introduced into an existing mix design without re-sequencing pours, slip-form schedules or precast de-moulding cycles. Second, its water-soluble chloride content is held at or below 0.10%, which is important for reinforced and prestressed work where chloride-induced corrosion is a primary durability risk. Fosroc also notes that over-dosing does not harm the final concrete properties, which gives site batching teams a useful margin against the dosing errors that are common with manual addition.

For Space Arc Engineering’s customers across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, WP410F is best understood as the “first line of defence” inside the concrete. In Indian conditions, where basements sit in fluctuating water tables, overhead and underground tanks are in permanent water contact, and the monsoon repeatedly saturates retaining structures, building water-repellency into the mix reduces the load placed on external membranes and tanking systems. It is a complement to good mix design, adequate cement content, low water-cement ratio and proper compaction and curing, not a substitute for them.

The technical insight

The mechanism is hydrophobic pore-lining rather than pore-blocking. Crystalline admixtures grow crystals to physically plug pores and need moisture to keep reacting; pore-blocking fillers densify the paste. Conplast WP410F instead deposits a water-repellent layer along the capillary walls, so the contact angle at the pore surface rises and capillary suction – the dominant transport path for water through sound concrete under low pressure – is suppressed. This is why the manufacturer frames the benefit as reducing capillary water absorption and giving a water-repellent (not fully pressure-tight) concrete.

Practically, that distinction sets the right expectation: a hydrophobic integral admixture is highly effective against rising damp, wind-driven rain, splash and low-head water contact, but it is not a standalone solution for sustained hydrostatic pressure through cracks. The admixture cannot waterproof a crack it does not fill, so crack control through reinforcement detailing, joint design and curing remains essential. The product complies with UNE-EN 934-2:2010 Table 9 (the European admixture standard clause for bulk/mass water-repellent admixtures), and its chloride content is capped at <=0.10%, both of which are the technically load-bearing claims a designer should rely on. Because performance is dosage- and mix-sensitive, the 0.5-2.0% by-weight-of-cement range is a trial starting point, not a fixed recipe – the optimum is confirmed by testing with the actual aggregates, cement and conditions of the job.

Where it is used

  • Water tanks, overhead and underground reservoirs, and sumps requiring low-absorption, water-repellent concrete
  • Basement rafts, retaining walls and underground walls subject to soil moisture and fluctuating water tables
  • Sewage and effluent treatment structures, channels and water-conveyance works
  • Hydraulic structures, power-plant water-contact concrete and pump houses
  • Precast and structural concrete elements where reduced water absorption improves durability
  • Water-repellent cement mortars and renders for plaster and masonry in damp-prone zones

Key advantages

  • Integral water-repellency distributed through the full concrete mass, not just the surface
  • Significantly reduces capillary water absorption, the main low-pressure water transport path
  • Setting time remains unchanged, so existing pour and de-moulding schedules are unaffected
  • Chloride-free (water-soluble chloride <=0.10%), suitable for reinforced concrete
  • Over-dosing does not adversely affect final concrete properties, giving a batching safety margin
  • Liquid form disperses easily via the mixing water for uniform distribution
  • Not flammable, simplifying storage and site handling
  • Complies with UNE-EN 934-2:2010 Table 9 as a bulk water-repellent admixture

Limitations & considerations

  • Reduces capillary absorption but does not make concrete fully pressure-tight against sustained hydrostatic head
  • Cannot bridge or seal cracks; crack control by detailing, curing and joint design is still required
  • Not a replacement for membranes/tanking where high or continuous water pressure is present
  • Optimum dosage must be established by site trials with the actual materials, not assumed
  • Liquid is alkaline and an irritant; skin, eye and ingestion precautions and PPE are needed
  • Limited storage life (about 6 months) in original sealed containers at 5-30 degrees C
  • Has a freezing point near -3 degrees C; if frozen it must be thawed slowly and re-agitated, relevant to cold-region/winter logistics

Selection & best practice

Always confirm the optimum dosage by trial mixes using the project’s own cement, aggregates and water before committing to production batching – take the 0.5-2.0% by weight of cement range as a starting point only. Add WP410F via the gauging water and mix thoroughly to distribute it evenly; never rely on it to compensate for a high water-cement ratio, poor compaction or inadequate curing. Treat it as the integral layer of a layered waterproofing strategy: pair it with a sound, dense mix design, proper construction-joint and movement-joint treatment, and an external membrane or coating wherever sustained hydrostatic pressure is expected. Store containers sealed in a dry place at 5-30 degrees C and use within the stated shelf life, and brief site teams on PPE because the liquid is alkaline and irritant.

Frequently asked questions

Is Conplast WP410F a coating or something I mix into the concrete?
It is an integral admixture, not a coating. It is added as a liquid to the mixing water and batched with the concrete or mortar so the water-repellent action is built into the whole mass, lining the capillary pores rather than sitting on the surface.
What dosage of WP410F should I use?
Fosroc gives a trial starting range of 0.5 to 2.0% by weight of cement. The exact optimum should be fixed by trial mixes using your actual cement, aggregates and site conditions. Helpfully, over-dosing does not adversely affect the final concrete properties.
Does it change the setting or curing time of concrete?
No. A key feature of WP410F is that it leaves the setting time unchanged, so it can be introduced into an existing mix design without disrupting pour sequencing or precast de-moulding schedules. Normal good curing practice still applies.
Is it safe for reinforced concrete?
Yes. It is chloride-free, with water-soluble chloride content held at or below 0.10%, which is important for reinforced and prestressed work because chloride is a primary driver of reinforcement corrosion.
Will WP410F alone stop water under pressure, like in a deep basement?
Not on its own. As a water-repellent integral admixture it strongly reduces capillary absorption and low-head water ingress, but it cannot seal cracks or resist sustained hydrostatic pressure by itself. For high or continuous water pressure, combine it with crack control and an external membrane or tanking system.
How should it be stored, and does it expire?
Keep it dry in original sealed containers at 5 to 30 degrees C; storage life is around 6 months. Its freezing point is near -3 degrees C, so in cold conditions protect it from freezing – if it does freeze, thaw slowly and re-agitate before use rather than thawing it directly.

How we position Fosroc Conplast WP410F

Within Fosroc’s own range, Conplast WP410F sits alongside integral waterproofing liquids such as Conplast WL (formerly Conplast X421IC) and Conplast WL Xtra, which are the more commonly specified India-market integral waterproofing admixtures, and the crystalline-action product Conplast Crystalline, which physically grows crystals to block pores and self-seal fine cracks where moisture is present. Choose a hydrophobic grade like WP410F when the priority is cutting capillary absorption in water-contact concrete and mortar with no change to set; consider Conplast Crystalline when self-sealing of microcracks under moisture is the goal. Against competitor systems, the integral-admixture approach competes with Sika’s Sika WT and Sika-1 lines, BASF/Master Builders Solutions MasterLife (formerly Rheomac) waterproofing admixtures, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) integral waterproofing compounds, and STP/MYK ranges. Honestly assessed, WP410F is one layer of a waterproofing strategy: it reduces water absorption from inside the concrete, but for structures under real hydrostatic head it should be paired with crack control, joint sealing and an external membrane.
