Fosroc Conplast WP421
Chloride-free integral waterproofing and plasticising liquid admixture that builds water resistance into the body of the concrete itself.
What is it?
A brown, water-dispersible liquid admixture that combines an integral waterproofing agent, a non-air-entraining plasticiser and an antifoam package to reduce the permeability of mass and structural concrete from the inside out.
Where is it used?
Basements, lift pits, water-retaining tanks, reservoirs, swimming pools, foundations, retaining walls and other below-ground or water-contact RCC across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
Why use it?
It densifies the cement matrix and cuts capillary water absorption while improving compaction, so the concrete itself resists water rather than relying only on an external membrane that can be punctured or debonded.
How is it applied?
Dispensed into the gauging water or concrete during batching at 1.5-4.0 litres per cubic metre (optimum 1.5-2 L/m3 by site trial), never directly onto dry cement; the mix is then placed, compacted and cured normally.
About Fosroc Conplast WP421
Fosroc Conplast WP421 is an integral, liquid waterproofing admixture engineered to make in-situ concrete watertight by acting within the body of the concrete rather than as a surface coating. Supplied as a brown liquid that is instantly dispersible in water, it is dosed at the batching plant or mixer along with the gauging water. Because the protection is built into the matrix, it is not lost if the concrete face is later chipped, drilled or otherwise damaged, which is the central advantage of integral systems over membranes and surface films.
The product works on two fronts. First, a carefully selected pore-blocking and water-repelling action reduces the capillary network through which water normally migrates into hardened concrete, lowering permeability and water absorption. Second, Conplast WP421 contains a non-air-entraining plasticiser that improves the workability of the fresh mix, allowing the same placeability at a lower water-cement ratio. Since uncontrolled mixing water is the single biggest cause of porous, leaky concrete, reducing the w/c ratio while keeping the mix workable is itself a powerful waterproofing mechanism. A specific antifoam component prevents unwanted air voids, keeping the hardened concrete dense.
For Space Arc Engineering clients across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Conplast WP421 is positioned as a workhorse for water-resisting structural concrete, basements, water tanks, reservoirs, swimming pools and similar elements where dense, low-permeability concrete is required as the first line of defence. It is chloride-free, so it is suitable for reinforced and pre-stressed concrete without introducing a corrosion risk to embedded steel. As an authorised Fosroc distributor, Space Arc supplies genuine, batch-traceable material with technical support on dosage trials, mix design and integration with the wider Fosroc waterproofing system.
The technical insight
Integral admixtures like Conplast WP421 do not make concrete impermeable on their own. Their performance is inseparable from mix design and workmanship. The largest gain comes from the plasticising effect: by allowing the water-cement ratio to be held at or below 0.45 while retaining a workable 140-200 mm final slump, the admixture forces a denser, less interconnected pore structure during hydration. The hydrophobic and pore-refining action then reduces residual capillary suction. This is why Fosroc specifies a minimum cement content (350 kg/m3) and a capped w/c ratio alongside the dosage: the admixture amplifies a good mix, it cannot rescue a bad one. As a non-air-entraining product with an antifoam package, WP421 avoids the strength penalty associated with entrained air, so compressive strength is maintained or improved at equal workability. Crucially, it is a permeability-reducing admixture for non-hydrostatic conditions (PRAN-class behaviour), not a crystalline self-healing system; it does not seal cracks that form after casting, so crack control through reinforcement detailing, joint design and curing remains essential.
Where it is used
- Reinforced concrete basements, lift pits and underground car parks
- Water-retaining structures: overhead and underground water tanks, reservoirs, sumps
- Swimming pools and water features
- Foundations, raft slabs, pile caps and footings in high water-table areas
- Retaining walls, box culverts and below-ground RCC
- Roof slabs and chajjas where dense, low-permeability concrete is specified
- General structural concrete requiring improved compaction and reduced permeability
Key advantages
- Integral protection that is retained even if the concrete surface is damaged, unlike membranes and surface films
- Chloride-free to BS 5075, so safe for reinforced and pre-stressed concrete with no added corrosion risk to steel
- Built-in non-air-entraining plasticiser allows water reduction, giving denser, less permeable concrete at equal workability
- Reduces capillary water penetration and absorption into hardened concrete
- Maintains or improves compressive strength because no air is deliberately entrained
- Single liquid product that disperses instantly in the gauging water for easy, accurate plant or site dosing
- Improves compaction and finish, reducing honeycombing and surface defects
- Compatible with ordinary Portland and most blended cements used in Indian construction
Limitations & considerations
- Not a crack-bridging or self-healing system; it will not seal cracks, cold joints or honeycombs that form after casting
- Performance depends on correct mix design, cement content and a low water-cement ratio, plus proper compaction and curing
- Should not be relied on alone for structures under significant hydrostatic head; combine with membranes or crystalline systems where specified
- Must be added to the gauging water or mix, never sprinkled directly onto dry cement or aggregate
- Optimum dosage must be confirmed by site trials with the actual materials; overdosing can affect set and workability
- Does not waterproof joints, service penetrations or construction joints, which need dedicated waterstops and sealants
- Liquid admixture requires protection from frost and should be stirred if storage causes any settlement
Selection & best practice
Establish the optimum dosage within the 1.5-4.0 L/m3 range by trial mixes using the actual cement and aggregates, then lock the water-cement ratio at 0.45 maximum with a minimum cement content of 350 kg/m3. Dispense WP421 into the gauging water (or the wet mix), never onto dry cement, and mix thoroughly to ensure even dispersion. Place, vibrate and compact the concrete fully to eliminate voids, then cure continuously by water spray or a Fosroc curing membrane for at least seven days. Treat WP421 as the concrete-densifying core of a layered waterproofing strategy: detail and seal all construction joints with waterstops, protect joints and penetrations with appropriate Fosroc sealants, and add an external membrane or crystalline coating where hydrostatic pressure is present.

How we position Fosroc Conplast WP421
Conplast WP421 sits in Fosroc’s integral waterproofing admixture range alongside Conplast WL and Conplast X421, with the key distinction that WP421 pairs the waterproofing action with a non-air-entraining plasticiser for water reduction. For projects needing self-healing crack sealing, Fosroc Conplast Crystalline or Conplast X421IC is more appropriate, while surface-applied protection is handled by Fosroc’s Brushbond and Nitoproof membranes. Within the wider Indian market it competes with integral waterproofers such as Sika WT-200P / Sika-1, MBS (Master Builders) MasterLife and similar admixtures, Dr. Fixit Pidiproof LW+ and STP-class additives. WP421’s honest position is as a reliable, chloride-free concrete-densifying admixture best specified as part of a layered waterproofing system rather than as a standalone hydrostatic barrier. Space Arc Engineering advises clients on whether WP421, a crystalline product, or a membrane combination is the right fit for the specific water exposure.
