What is it?

A chloride-free, high-range water-reducing superplasticiser based on sulphonated naphthalene polymers, supplied as a ready-to-use brown liquid that disperses instantly in mixing water.

Where is it used?

Precast yards, RMC plants and structural concrete on infrastructure, high-rise, industrial and water-retaining projects where high early strength, low water:cement ratio or flowing/pumpable concrete is required.

Why use it?

It allows large reductions in water content (or a big jump in workability) without extra cement, lifting early and ultimate strength, reducing permeability and improving pumpability, while remaining safe for reinforced and prestressed members.

How is it applied?

Dosed by calibrated dispenser at roughly 0.7 to 2.0 litres per 100 kg of cementitious material, added with the gauging water at the mixer (or into the truck drum and mixed at high speed for at least two minutes) after establishing dosage by site trial.

About Fosroc Conplast SP430EX

Fosroc Conplast SP430EX is part of the long-established Conplast SP430 family of high-range water-reducing admixtures (superplasticisers) and is listed on Fosroc’s official product catalogue. The “EX” designation is a regional/export grade of the SP430 chemistry. Like the rest of the range, it is a chloride-free admixture based on selected sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde (SNF) polymers, supplied as a brown solution that disperses instantly in water. Functionally it does one core job extremely well: it deflocculates and disperses the fine cement particles in a concrete mix so the mixing water works far more efficiently. That dispersion is what lets a producer either strip large quantities of water out of the mix at constant workability, or hold the water constant and convert the mix into a flowing, self-levelling, easily pumped concrete. In Indian practice this places SP430EX in the category that BS 5075 Part 3 calls a superplasticiser and that ASTM C494 classifies as both a Type A water-reducing and a Type F high-range water-reducing admixture; the Indian-market SP430 grade additionally complies with IS 9103:1999. For contractors, consultants and precast manufacturers across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, SP430EX is a workhorse naphthalene-based superplasticiser positioned for high-early-strength precast, high-grade structural concrete (M30 and above), and high-workability pump mixes where a robust, economical SNF admixture is preferred over a more expensive polycarboxylate ether (PCE).

The technical insight

The performance of SP430EX comes from electrostatic dispersion. Cement grains carry surface charges that make them flocculate in water, trapping mixing water inside the clumps where it cannot lubricate the mix. The sulphonated naphthalene polymer adsorbs onto the cement particles and imparts a strong negative charge, so the grains repel each other and release that trapped water. The freed water becomes available for workability, which is why the same slump can be achieved at a much lower water:cement ratio. The published SP430 data shows the scale of this: in laboratory trials at 300 kg/m3 cement, dosing 1.8 litres/100 kg dropped the water:cement ratio from 0.69 to 0.52 at equal slump and lifted 1-day strength from 9.5 to 17.0 N/mm2 and 28-day strength from 36.0 to 49.0 N/mm2. With microsilica blends the effect is more dramatic still, with 28-day strengths above 90 N/mm2 reported. Two practical points follow from the SNF chemistry. First, slump retention is good for a naphthalene admixture (better than older sulphonated melamine types) but shorter than a modern PCE, so it suits mixes placed reasonably promptly rather than long-haul transit concrete in peak summer. Second, the admixture is mildly retarding and entrains typically less than 2% additional air at normal dosage; a double overdose noticeably increases retardation and air, an effect amplified by sulphate-resisting cement, PFA, GGBFS or microsilica. This is why Fosroc and Space Arc both insist dosage be fixed by trial mix with the actual project materials.

Where it is used

  • High-early-strength precast concrete allowing earlier mould stripping and faster bed turnaround
  • High-strength structural concrete (typically M30 and above) at low water:cement ratio without excessive cement
  • Flowing, self-levelling and pumpable concrete for congested reinforcement and tall pours
  • Ready-mix concrete requiring controlled water reduction and improved cohesion
  • Microsilica, PFA and GGBFS blended high-performance and durability concrete
  • Floor screeds and toppings where reduced water content gives faster drying
  • Water-retaining and marine structures where lower permeability improves durability

Key advantages

  • Chloride-free, so safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete
  • Large water reduction (above 12% over the reference mix) lifts early and ultimate strength without extra cement
  • Converts normal mixes into flowing, easily placed and pumped concrete at constant water content
  • Improved cement dispersion and cohesion reduces segregation and bleeding and improves pumpability
  • Better workability retention than older sulphonated melamine superplasticisers
  • Lower w/c ratio reduces permeability, improving durability of the hardened concrete
  • Compatible with all ordinary Portland cements and with PFA, GGBFS and silica fume
  • Economical SNF chemistry, generally lower in cost than polycarboxylate (PCE) admixtures
  • Ready-to-use liquid that disperses instantly in the gauging water

Limitations & considerations

  • Mildly retarding; a double overdose markedly increases set retardation and entrained air, worsened with SRC, PFA, GGBFS or microsilica
  • Slump life is shorter than modern polycarboxylate (PCE) admixtures, so less suited to long-haul or very hot-weather transit concrete
  • High dosage with no water reduction taken can cause excessive slump and risk of segregation
  • Contributes alkalis to the mix (typically under 72 g Na2O equivalent per litre), so seek advice where alkali-reactive aggregates are used
  • Optimum dosage must be established by site trial; it cannot simply be read off a chart
  • Must be added separately from other admixtures and never pre-mixed with them in the same container
  • Not an air-entrainer, integral waterproofer or set accelerator; pair with the correct Fosroc product for those functions

Selection & best practice

Always establish the working dosage by trial mix using the actual project cement, supplementary cementitious materials and aggregates rather than assuming a value, and start within the 0.7 to 2.0 litres/100 kg cementitious range. Add SP430EX with the final portion of gauging water through a calibrated dispenser; if upgrading workability of concrete already delivered to site, add into the truck drum and mix at high speed for at least two minutes for full blending. Keep it physically separate from any other admixture until each is dosed individually into the mix. Decide upfront whether each batch is taking the benefit as water reduction (for strength) or as added workability (for placing) and design the mix accordingly, since taking both fully invites segregation. Maintain good curing with water spray, wet hessian or a Fosroc Concure curing membrane, particularly if an overdose is suspected. Store between 2 C and 50 C, keep drums sealed, protect from frost (freezing point about minus 2 C) and use within the 12-month shelf life.

Frequently asked questions

Is Conplast SP430EX chloride-free and safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete?
Yes. SP430EX is a chloride-free SNF superplasticiser with nil chloride content to BS 5075, so it is safe for use in reinforced and prestressed concrete and does not promote reinforcement corrosion.
What is the recommended dosage of Conplast SP430EX?
The normal range is about 0.70 to 2.00 litres per 100 kg of cementitious material for high-strength water-reduced concrete, and around 0.70 to 1.30 litres per 100 kg for high-workability concrete. The optimum should always be fixed by a trial mix using the actual project materials, as overdosing increases retardation and air entrainment.
How is SP430EX different from a polycarboxylate (PCE) superplasticiser like Auramix or Structuro?
SP430EX is a naphthalene-based (SNF) admixture, which is robust, economical and gives strong water reduction with good slump life. PCE admixtures generally offer higher water reduction and much longer slump retention at lower dosage, which suits long transit times and very high-grade self-compacting concrete, but at higher cost. SP430EX is well suited to precast and prompt-placed high-strength mixes where an economical SNF performs well.
Which standards does Conplast SP430EX comply with?
The SP430 chemistry complies with BS 5075 Part 3 and with ASTM C494 as Type A and Type F, and meets EN 934-2 Tables 3.1/3.2 as a high-range water reducer/superplasticiser. The Indian-market grade additionally complies with IS 9103:1999. Confirm the exact certification on the EX grade datasheet for your supply for project specification.
What pack sizes are available and what is the shelf life?
It is supplied in 20 litre drums, with bulk supply and storage tanks available for larger users. Shelf life is a minimum of 12 months when stored between 2 C and 50 C in sealed containers, protected from frost.
Can SP430EX be used with microsilica, fly ash (PFA) or GGBFS?
Yes. It is compatible with all ordinary Portland cements and with PFA, GGBFS and silica fume, and is often used in such blends to reach very high strengths and low permeability. Bear in mind that these materials can increase the retardation effect at high admixture dosage, so trial mixes are essential.

How we position Fosroc Conplast SP430EX

Conplast SP430EX sits in the mid-of-range, naphthalene-based (SNF) superplasticiser tier of the Fosroc admixture portfolio. It is the natural choice when a project needs strong, economical water reduction and high early strength rather than the extended slump retention of a premium polycarbonate product. Within the Fosroc range itself, it relates closely to the rest of the SP430 family (SP430, SP430 DIS, SP430 G8, SP430SRV) and to the lighter-duty Conplast SP337/SP432 mid-range water reducers; where a project demands very long workability retention or self-compacting concrete, Fosroc’s polycarboxylate-ether (PCE) lines such as Auramix and Structuro are the better fit, and where retardation for long hauls or mass pours is the priority, a retarding plasticiser such as Conplast RP264 is more appropriate. Pair SP430EX with complementary Fosroc systems on the same job, for example Conbextra grouts, Renderoc repair mortars or Concure curing membranes. Among credible alternatives an Indian specifier will recognise, SNF-class equivalents include Sika Plastiment / Sikament grades, Master Builders Solutions (MBS) MasterRheobuild, and BASF-legacy SNF superplasticisers; for PCE-class upgrades the comparable products are Sika ViscoCrete and MasterGlenium. Dr. Fixit and STP (Pidilite) are strong in waterproofing and integral admixtures but are positioned more around their integral waterproofing and repair ranges than high-range SNF superplasticisers. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, supplies SP430EX with technical support on dosage trials, mix design and dispensing so the right admixture is matched to the actual project requirement.
