Fosroc Conbextra BB90
High early strength, non-shrink cementitious grout engineered for fast-track bridge foundations, piling and precast jointing — even in cold-weather pours.
What is it?
A factory-blended, cement-based, non-shrink fluid grout that gains very high strength within the first 24 hours (50 N/mm2 at 1 day) and stays dimensionally stable as it cures.
Where is it used?
Bridge and viaduct foundations, pile caps, column base plates and the filling of joints between precast bridge segments — wherever an early-strength, free-flowing grout is needed, including low-temperature sites.
Why use it?
It lets contractors strip formwork and load structures sooner, eliminates settlement gaps under bearing surfaces, and performs reliably in cold weather where ordinary grouts gain strength too slowly.
How is it applied?
Mixed with a measured quantity of clean water to a flowable consistency in a forced-action or drill-paddle mixer, then poured or pumped continuously into the gap from one side to avoid air entrapment.
About Fosroc Conbextra BB90
Fosroc Conbextra BB90 belongs to the well-known Conbextra family of cementitious and epoxy grouts and sits at the high-performance end of that range. It is a ready-to-use, single-component powder based on Portland cement, carefully graded fillers and a balanced package of chemical additives. Two characteristics define the product: it develops very high compressive strength extremely early in its life, and it does not shrink as it sets and hardens. The combination makes it a specialist grout rather than a general-purpose one — it is chosen specifically where time on site is critical or where the ambient temperature is too low for a conventional grout to perform.
In Indian infrastructure work the product is most associated with bridge and flyover construction. Conbextra BB90 is used to grout the foundations of bridge piers, to fill the annulus around piles and columns, and to fill the joints between precast bridge deck and girder segments. On metro viaducts, expressway interchanges and railway bridge projects across Delhi NCR and the wider country, the ability to grout a connection in the evening and load it the following morning translates directly into faster construction cycles and earlier handover.
The “non-shrink” behaviour is the second pillar of its performance. When an ordinary cement grout dries it tends to shrink and pull away from the surfaces it was meant to bond, leaving voids that concentrate stress and let water in. Conbextra BB90 uses a shrinkage-compensation system so that the hardened grout remains in full, intimate contact with the substrate and the embedded steel. That positive contact is what allows load to transfer cleanly from a base plate or a precast joint into the foundation below.
A third, very practical advantage is cold-weather workability. Fosroc positions BB90 explicitly for sites where high early strength is required “even at low temperatures,” and its good fluidity at low temperature is called out as a benefit. For winter pours in North India, hill-state projects and night-time concreting, this widens the working window considerably compared with standard grouts that stall in the cold.
Conbextra BB90 is supplied with a European Declaration of Performance, reflecting that it is a CE-marked structural product manufactured to a defined, audited specification. For specifiers this means the strength and durability claims are backed by a documented conformity route rather than by marketing alone.
The technical insight
The engineering logic of Conbextra BB90 is built around the relationship between early strength, dimensional stability and pourability. A high one-day compressive strength of 50 N/mm2 is achieved through a low water demand and a reactive cement system — the grout is mixed at a tightly controlled water-to-powder ratio so that excess water, which would dilute strength and cause bleed, is kept out. Its relatively high fresh wet density of 2.25-2.30 kg/l reflects the dense, well-graded aggregate packing that gives the hardened grout low permeability and therefore good long-term durability against water and chloride ingress. The non-shrink action comes from a controlled expansion mechanism in the plastic and early-hardening phase, which offsets the natural drying shrinkage of cement so the net dimensional change stays positive against the confining surfaces. Because the product is engineered to stay fluid even when cold, it can be placed continuously without the cold-joint risk that arises when a stiffening grout has to be worked in stages — and continuous, single-direction placement is itself the key to expelling air and achieving full contact under a base plate or inside a precast joint.
Where it is used
- Grouting the foundations of bridge and flyover piers
- Filling the annular gap around piles and structural columns
- Filling joints between precast bridge deck, girder and segmental units
- Cold-weather and night-time grouting where early strength is required at low temperature
- Base-plate and bearing-plate grouting on heavily loaded structural supports
- Fast-track infrastructure where early form-stripping and loading shorten the programme
Key advantages
- Very high early compressive strength of 50 N/mm2 at just 1 day, enabling rapid loading
- Non-shrink behaviour keeps the grout in full contact with the substrate and steel
- Performs and gains strength even at low ambient temperatures
- Good fluidity, particularly in cold conditions, for easy continuous placement
- Low permeability gives durable, long-service performance against water ingress
- Flexible placement — can be poured or pumped at varying consistencies
- Factory-blended single-component powder; only clean water is added on site
- Supplied with a CE Declaration of Performance for documented conformity
Limitations & considerations
- A specialist high-early-strength grout — for routine base-plate grouting a general grade such as Conbextra GP is more economical
- Cementitious, not epoxy: not suited to aggressive chemical exposure or where very thin (a few mm) sections are needed — an epoxy grout fits those cases
- Final strength and flow depend on strict water control; over-watering to ease placement sharply reduces strength and causes bleed
- Single-pour thickness is bounded by the product’s stated range; very deep gaps may need a specified aggregate extension or staged pours
- Like all cementitious grouts it requires proper curing to develop and retain durability
- Shelf life is limited and the powder must be kept dry and sealed; damp or lumpy material must not be used
Selection & best practice
Pre-soak the concrete substrate so it is saturated but surface-dry, and confine the grout with leak-tight, well-braced formwork that allows pouring from one side only. Add the powder to the pre-measured clean water (never the reverse) and mix mechanically for the full specified time to a uniform, lump-free, flowable consistency — resist the temptation to add extra water to make it flow more easily, as this is the single most common cause of low strength and bleed on Indian sites. Pour or pump continuously and steadily from one end so the advancing grout front pushes air out ahead of it, maintaining a constant head until the gap is full and the grout rises on the far side. In hot weather use chilled water and shade the materials; even though BB90 is cold-tolerant, protect fresh grout and cure the exposed surfaces with wet hessian or a curing membrane to lock in durability.

How we position Fosroc Conbextra BB90
Within the Fosroc Conbextra range, BB90 is the high-early-strength, cold-tolerant specialist. For routine, cost-sensitive base-plate and pocket grouting, Fosroc Conbextra GP is the standard choice, while Conbextra HF offers high flow over longer distances and Conbextra EP / epoxy grades handle chemical exposure and very thin sections that a cementitious grout cannot. Against competitors, BB90 competes with Sika’s non-shrink grouts such as SikaGrout-214/HES, BASF/MBS Master Builders Solutions MasterFlow (formerly Masterflow 928/648), Dr. Fixit’s Pidicrete/precision-grout offerings and STP’s structural grout range. The honest distinction is that BB90 is bought for its day-one strength and its dependable behaviour in the cold rather than on price — for ordinary ambient-temperature grouting a buyer may find a general-purpose grade from any of these brands more economical. Where the programme cannot wait for strength or where the pour is happening in winter, BB90 earns its premium. Space Arc Engineering can supply BB90 alongside the wider Fosroc system and advise objectively on when an alternative grade or brand is the better technical and commercial fit.
