What is it?

Conplast WP500 is a Fosroc integral waterproofing admixture supplied as a brown organic liquid. It is dosed into the concrete mix at the batching plant, where it reacts with the products of cement hydration to form a water-repellent (hydrophobic) material that lines the pore structure and drastically cuts capillary water absorption.

Where is it used?

It is specified for water-retaining and water-excluding reinforced concrete: multi-storey basements, tunnels, lift pits, retaining walls, water tanks, sumps, bridge decks and similar structures across Delhi NCR and Pan-India projects where long-term protection against water ingress is required.

Why use it?

Because the protection is integral, it works through the entire cross-section and is not lost if the surface is later chipped, drilled or abraded. As a chloride-free admixture it is safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete, and it also reduces the water:cement ratio to lift strength and durability.

How is it applied?

It is added to the mix water or directly to the concrete during batching at a typical dosage of 1.0 to 1.5 litres per 100 kg of cement, never to dry aggregate. Optimum dosage is fixed by trial mixes using the actual site materials, and it must be dispensed separately from other admixtures.

About Fosroc Conplast WP500

Conplast WP500 is part of Fosroc’s Conplast range of concrete admixtures and sits firmly in the integral waterproofing family. Rather than coating the finished surface, it is engineered to make the concrete itself resist water. In Indian construction, where structures routinely face high water tables, monsoon saturation and aggressive ground conditions, this distinction matters: surface membranes can fail at joints, get punctured during backfilling, or wear away over time, whereas an integral admixture defends the concrete from within.

Supplied as a brown liquid that disperses instantly in water, Conplast WP500 is an organic compound that reacts chemically with the calcium-bearing products of cement hydration. The reaction generates a hydrophobic material that is deposited within the capillary pores of the hardened matrix. These water-repelling deposits break the continuity of the capillary network, so the concrete no longer wicks external water inward. The result is a marked reduction in water absorption and a more durable, lower-permeability structure.

A defining feature of WP500 is that it is dual-acting. Beyond its hydrophobic function, it also behaves as a water-reducing admixture, allowing the mix to achieve the same workability at a lower water:cement ratio. Lowering the w/c ratio is one of the most reliable ways to improve concrete: it raises compressive strength and tightens the pore structure, which compounds the waterproofing benefit. The product is chloride-free and bitumen-free, making it appropriate for reinforced and prestressed elements where chloride-induced corrosion of steel is a concern.

For Space Arc Engineering clients in Delhi NCR and across India, Conplast WP500 is positioned as a batching-plant solution for water-resisting structural concrete, and is best understood alongside Fosroc’s other Conplast waterproofing options rather than as a stand-alone fix for every leakage problem.

The technical insight

The core mechanism is hydrophobic pore-lining, not pore-blocking. Conplast WP500 is an organic liquid that reacts with the products of cement hydration (principally calcium compounds released during hydration) to precipitate a water-repellent material inside the capillary pores. This lining changes the wettability of the pore walls so that water beads rather than being drawn in by capillary suction, sharply reducing absorption. Because the active material is distributed throughout the mix, the effect is integral: a saw-cut, drilled hole or spalled face exposes fresh concrete that is itself hydrophobic, so protection is not breached the way a surface membrane would be. This is technically distinct from crystalline systems such as Conplast Crystalline, which grow crystals that physically plug pores and can self-heal hairline cracks in the presence of moisture. WP500 does not seal cracks; it lowers permeability of the sound concrete. Its secondary water-reducing action also matters: by enabling a lower water:cement ratio at constant slump, it reduces the volume and connectivity of capillary pores at source, so the chemical and physical mechanisms reinforce one another. Being chloride-free (Nil to BS 5075), it adds no risk of reinforcement corrosion, and it is compatible with PFA, GGBFS and microsilica blended cements commonly used in durable Indian mix designs.

Where it is used

  • Multi-storey and deep basements subject to a high water table
  • Tunnels, cut-and-cover sections and underground service ducts
  • Water-retaining structures such as overhead and underground tanks, reservoirs and STP/ETP tanks
  • Water-excluding structures including lift pits, sumps, foundation rafts and retaining walls
  • Bridge decks and other exposed structural concrete needing reduced water absorption
  • Precast concrete elements where low permeability and clean finishes are required
  • Civil and building structures generally exposed to ground or rain water ingress

Key advantages

  • Provides integral waterproofing through the full concrete section, maintained even if the surface is later damaged
  • Chloride-free formulation, safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete
  • Bitumen-free, avoiding the drawbacks of bitumen-based products
  • Acts as a water-reducing admixture, allowing a lower water:cement ratio and higher compressive strength at the same workability
  • Drastically reduces capillary water absorption and overall permeability
  • Disperses instantly in water and is easy to dose at the batching plant
  • Compatible with all types of Portland cement and with PFA, GGBFS and microsilica
  • Compatible with Conplast retarder, plasticiser and superplasticiser products when dosed separately
  • Fully compatible with most Fosroc surface coatings and finishes for layered protection systems

Limitations & considerations

  • It is an integral admixture, not a crack-sealing or self-healing system; it does not bridge or heal cracks that form after casting
  • Reduces water absorption of sound concrete but does not by itself guarantee a watertight structure if there is poor compaction, honeycombing or construction-joint defects
  • Performance depends on correct mix design and good site practice; optimum dosage must be established by trial mixes with actual site materials
  • Must be dispensed separately and not pre-mixed with other admixtures before addition to the concrete
  • Added at the batching stage only, so it cannot be applied to existing hardened concrete or used as a remedial surface treatment
  • Should be used as part of a designed waterproofing strategy, often combined with proper joints, water bars and, where required, surface coatings

Selection & best practice

Always establish the optimum dosage by trial mixes using the exact cement, aggregates, supplementary materials and ambient conditions of the project, targeting the specified grade strength to BS 5328 (or its current equivalent / relevant IS code) before full-scale batching begins. Dose Conplast WP500 at 1.0 to 1.5 litres per 100 kg of cement into the gauging water or the concrete during mixing, never onto dry aggregate, and where other admixtures such as retarders or superplasticisers are used, add each one separately to the mix rather than blending them beforehand. Pair the admixture with sound construction detailing: well-compacted concrete free of honeycombing, properly treated construction joints with water stops, adequate cover, and good curing. For the most demanding water-retaining or below-grade structures, treat WP500 as the integral layer of a multi-line defence and combine it with appropriate Fosroc joint-sealing and surface protection systems.

Frequently asked questions

Is Conplast WP500 a surface coating or an admixture?
It is an admixture, not a coating. It is added to the concrete during batching, typically at 1.0 to 1.5 litres per 100 kg of cement, so the waterproofing protection is built into the body of the concrete rather than applied on top. It cannot be brushed or sprayed onto existing hardened concrete.
Does Conplast WP500 contain chloride, and is it safe for reinforced concrete?
It is chloride-free, certified as Nil to BS 5075. That makes it suitable for reinforced and prestressed concrete, because it adds no chloride that could promote corrosion of the embedded steel.
How is the correct dosage decided?
The normal recommended dosage is 1.0 to 1.5 litres per 100 kg of cement, but the optimum figure for a given job should always be confirmed by trial mixes using the actual site cement, aggregates and conditions, and verified against the target grade strength before full production.
Will WP500 stop leaks through cracks in my structure?
No. WP500 reduces the water absorption and permeability of sound concrete by making the pores hydrophobic. It does not seal or self-heal cracks. For crack-bridging or self-sealing behaviour, a crystalline product such as Fosroc Conplast Crystalline is a more appropriate choice, often used in combination with good joint detailing.
Can it be used with superplasticisers and blended cements?
Yes. Conplast WP500 is compatible with Fosroc’s range of retarders, plasticisers and superplasticisers (conforming to ASTM C494 Type D or F, or BS 5075) and with all Portland cements and replacement materials such as PFA, GGBFS and microsilica. Each admixture must be dosed separately and not pre-mixed before addition.
How does WP500 differ from Conplast WL and WL Xtra?
All three are integral waterproofing admixtures, but WP500 is a hydrophobic, water-reducing grade aimed at structural and precast concrete in demanding water-retaining and water-excluding applications. Conplast WL and WL Xtra are positioned as integral waterproofing liquids for general concrete and mortar; the right choice depends on the structure, strength and workability targets, which Space Arc Engineering can advise on per project.

How we position Fosroc Conplast WP500

Within the Fosroc range, Conplast WP500 is the premium integral waterproofing admixture for structural and precast concrete, sitting above the general-purpose Conplast WL and WL Xtra integral waterproofing liquids and complementing, rather than replacing, Conplast Crystalline, which adds crack-sealing and self-healing capability through pore-blocking crystal growth. WP500’s distinctive edge is that it is both hydrophobic and water-reducing, so it improves strength while cutting absorption. Against competitor systems, it is the in-the-mix counterpart to integral waterproofing compounds such as Dr. Fixit Pidiproof LW+ and STP Shalimar’s integral admixtures, and to crystalline or admixture lines from Sika (for example Sika WT and Sikament ranges) and MBS/MYK. Surface-applied membranes and crystalline slurry coatings from these brands solve a different problem (treating the finished surface) and are frequently used together with an integral admixture like WP500 for belt-and-braces protection. As an authorised Fosroc distributor serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering recommends WP500 where the priority is durable, body-wide water resistance in reinforced water-retaining and below-grade concrete, and will pair it with the appropriate joint-sealing or surface protection system, or steer clients to Conplast Crystalline, when active crack-sealing is the governing requirement.
