About Fosroc Nitoseal PU40E
Fosroc Nitoseal PU40E is the moisture-curing polyurethane joint sealant in Fosroc’s well-established Nitoseal PU40 range, the family that succeeded the older Nitoseal HP40. It is a one-part, low-modulus, gun-grade elastomer that arrives on site ready to extrude straight from the cartridge or sachet, so there is no two-part mixing, no pot-life pressure and no batch-to-batch variability for the applicator to manage. Once gunned into a joint it skins over in roughly two hours and cures through reaction with atmospheric moisture, building a tough, flexible rubber seal that moves with the structure. For Space Arc Engineering’s customers across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, it is a dependable workhorse for sealing the perimeter and movement joints that every concrete-and-masonry building accumulates. In the Indian context, where buildings swing through wide seasonal and diurnal temperature ranges, monsoon-driven water ingress is a constant threat, and facades combine concrete, brick, blockwork and natural stone, a low-modulus polyurethane that flexes without tearing and bonds to all of those substrates is exactly the right tool. The ‘E’ grade sits within this proven PU40 platform and is positioned by Fosroc for general construction joint sealing with rapid tack-free and final cure characteristics, single-component convenience, and primerless adhesion on most substrates. Typical homes for the product are external wall expansion joints, precast panel and cladding joints, the gap around door and window frames, blockwork control joints, and non-trafficked floor joints, sealing them against rain, wind-driven water, dust and air leakage while still allowing the joint to open and close with thermal cycling. Because it is a polyurethane chemistry it carries the usual family limitations: it is not intended for permanent water immersion, for trafficked floor joints, or for contact with bitumen, solvents, oils or fuels, and Fosroc directs those duties to other Nitoseal grades. Used inside its design envelope, however, Nitoseal PU40E gives long-service, weatherproof, elastic joints that are quick to install and forgiving to apply.
The technical insight
The defining engineering property of the Nitoseal PU40 family is its combination of low modulus and a 25% movement accommodation factor (MAF), classified as ISO 11600:2002 Type F 25LM and ASTM C920 Class 25. ‘Low modulus’ means the cured rubber develops only a small restraining stress as it is stretched, so it pulls gently on the joint arrises rather than ripping the bond line or spalling weak substrate edges. The 25% MAF means a correctly designed joint can absorb total movement equal to a quarter of its installed width before the seal is overstressed. This is why joint geometry, not the sealant alone, governs durability: Fosroc specifies a 2:1 width-to-depth ratio with a minimum sealant depth of 5 mm on non-porous substrates and 10 mm on porous ones, achieved using a closed-cell backing rod such as Hydrocell or Expandafoam, or a bond breaker tape, so the sealant bonds only on two faces and is free to deform in the middle. A 20 mm facade joint, for instance, accommodates roughly 5 mm of total seasonal movement when detailed this way. Cure proceeds by reaction with atmospheric humidity at about 3 mm per 24 hours at 20C/50% RH after an approximate two-hour skin time, so in dry weather a deep joint continues hardening from the surface inward over several days. The cured sealant holds Shore A hardness around 25 and serves continuously from -40C to +70C, comfortably covering Indian climate extremes. Application is restricted to 5C to 50C ambient because the moisture-cure chemistry slows and adhesion suffers in the cold.
Where it is used
- Sealing vertical and horizontal movement and expansion joints in concrete structures
- Construction and contraction joints in blockwork and brickwork walls
- Joints between precast concrete panels and around precast cladding units
- Sealing joints in natural stone and stone cladding facades
- Perimeter sealing of door and window frames against masonry and concrete
- Weatherproofing external building envelope joints against rain and wind-driven water
- Non-trafficked floor joints in plant rooms, terraces and service areas
- Re-sealing of failed or aged joints after old sealant removal and arris cleaning
Key advantages
- Single-component, ready to gun straight from cartridge or sachet with no site mixing
- Low-modulus elastomer that flexes with the joint and minimises stress on weak arrises
- 25% movement accommodation factor to ISO 11600 Type F 25LM and ASTM C920 Class 25
- Fast skin and cure, with tack-free in about two hours at 20C/50% RH
- Primerless adhesion to most common building substrates in normal conditions
- Good UV resistance and weathering durability for external facade exposure
- Wide -40C to +70C service temperature range suiting Indian climate extremes
- Bonds to concrete, masonry, stone, metal and most facade materials
- Available in a range of colours to match or contrast facade finishes
Limitations & considerations
- Not suitable for permanently water-immersed joints; Fosroc directs these to Nitoseal MS600
- Not suitable for trafficked floor joints; Nitoseal MS300 is specified for traffic
- Must not be applied below 5C ambient, limiting cold-weather and winter-night work
- Not compatible with contact with bituminous materials, solvents, oil or petrol
- May stain decorative or natural stone; a non-staining grade such as Nitoseal MS100 is preferred there
- Surface colour change can occur on long exterior exposure where colour stability is critical
- Contains isocyanates, requiring normal PU handling precautions and ventilation
- Cure depends on atmospheric moisture, so very deep sections cure slowly from the surface inward
- 12-month shelf life only when stored cool and dry in original unopened packaging
- Over-coating with rigid finishes can reduce the joint’s movement capability
Selection & best practice
Design the joint before specifying the sealant: target a 2:1 width-to-depth ratio with a closed-cell backing rod (Hydrocell, Expandafoam or backing rod) so the sealant bonds on only two faces and is free to flex, keeping depth to a 5 mm minimum on non-porous and 10 mm on porous substrates. Ensure joint faces are clean, dry and frost-free, mechanically removing laitance, dirt, rust and old sealant back to sound concrete. A primer is not normally needed, but for high-movement or intermittently wet joints use Fosroc Primer 7 on porous substrates or Primer 4 on non-porous, applied sparingly to avoid puddling, and re-prime if a primed joint is left open beyond four hours. Gun the sealant firmly to fill the slot fully and tool it flush within five minutes to develop full substrate contact, masking the arris edges first where a crisp line is required. Work only between 5C and 50C, and on hot Delhi-summer days seal early in the day. Clean tools immediately with Fosroc Equipment Cleaner or Solvent 102.

How we position Fosroc Nitoseal PU40E
Within Fosroc’s own joint-sealant line, Nitoseal PU40E sits in the polyurethane PU40 family alongside variants such as Nitoseal PU40, PU40 N, PU40A and the construction-grade PU40-CS, all sharing the one-part low-modulus PU platform. Where the application falls outside PU territory, Fosroc itself directs users to its hybrid MS Polymer Nitoseal grades: Nitoseal MS600 for water-immersed joints, Nitoseal MS300 for trafficked floor joints, and Nitoseal MS100 as a non-staining option for decorative stone. For pourable horizontal joints, Fosroc’s Nitoseal 2-part PU pouring grades are the relatives to consider. Against competitor products, Nitoseal PU40E competes most directly with Sika’s Sikaflex polyurethane construction sealants (such as Sikaflex Construction and the Sikaflex PRO range), MBS/MYK and STP polyurethane gun-grade sealants, and Pidilite Dr. Fixit’s joint-sealing PU and hybrid offerings. Its honest positioning is as a proven, mainstream low-modulus PU facade and masonry joint sealant: a strong value choice for general external building joints where fast cure, primerless adhesion and 25% movement are needed. For high-traffic, fully immersed, non-staining-stone or chemically aggressive duties, buyers should step up to the appropriate Nitoseal MS grade or an equivalent specialist sealant rather than force-fit PU40E. Space Arc Engineering helps specifiers choose correctly across the Fosroc range and against these alternatives.
