What is it?

A water-based chemical mould release agent from Fosroc, supplied as a light amber liquid that is brushed, sprayed or rolled onto formwork so concrete strips cleanly without sticking.

Where is it used?

Site casting and precast yards across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, on wooden (ply) shuttering and steel formwork for slabs, beams, columns, walls and precast panels.

Why use it?

It is the most economical release agent in the Reebol range, can be diluted with up to 3 parts water to stretch cost, gives a smooth stain-free concrete face and protects steel forms from rusting.

How is it applied?

Dilute with clean water as required, then apply a thin, continuous film by brush, roller or low-pressure spray to clean formwork before placing concrete; avoid pooling.

About Fosroc Reebol M1

Fosroc Reebol M1 is a water-based chemical mould release agent (shuttering release / de-shuttering oil) used to separate freshly placed concrete from formwork so the mould strips cleanly without surface damage. It belongs to Fosroc’s well-known Reebol family of release agents and is supplied as a ready-to-thin, light amber coloured liquid. Unlike a plain mineral mould oil that simply forms a greasy barrier, Reebol M1 is a formulated blend of chemicals whose release performance is engineered to be superior to conventional mould oil, which is why it leaves a cleaner, more uniform concrete face.

On Indian sites the everyday cost pressure on shuttering oil is real, because release agent is consumed on every pour and re-pour. Reebol M1 is positioned as the low-cost, high-economy option in the range, and it is the only Reebol product that the manufacturer states can be diluted with up to 3 parts water. That dilution headroom is the single biggest commercial reason contractors choose it: a drum goes much further than a neat oil, which matters on high-rise, large-slab and repetitive precast work where formwork area runs into thousands of square metres.

Functionally it does three things on site. First, it lets timber and steel forms release without tearing the concrete arris or pulling cement paste onto the shutter. Second, because it is a chemical release agent rather than a heavy oil, it tends to give a smoother surface that is free from the oily stains and patchy discoloration that cheap mould oils leave behind, which is important when the concrete will be left fair-faced or will later receive plaster, tile adhesive or a coating. Third, the film protects steel formwork from rusting between pours, extending shutter life in the humid monsoon conditions common across much of India.

Reebol M1 is especially suited to wooden (plywood) shuttering, which is still the dominant formwork type on Indian residential and commercial projects. It also works on steel and is compatible with the kind of mixed timber-and-steel formwork decks that are common in cast-in-situ frame construction. As a water-dilutable product it is lower in solvent and oil content than neat mould oils, which is a practical advantage for indoor pours, basements and enclosed areas where solvent fumes are a concern.

It is important to set expectations honestly. Reebol M1 is the budget, general-purpose member of the family. For premium architectural fair-faced concrete, for high-temperature or steam-cured precast, or where the absolute lowest blowhole count is demanded, Fosroc makes higher-specification release agents such as the Reebol Emulsion and Reebol Emulsion Xtra grades. Reebol M1 is the right pick when the priority is clean, reliable stripping at the lowest running cost on normal structural concrete.

The technical insight

Reebol M1 works through chemistry, not just a physical oil barrier. The active ingredients react with the alkaline calcium hydroxide at the fresh concrete surface to form a thin, water-insoluble soap film at the form face. This soap layer is what actually breaks the bond, so the form releases cleanly even though only a very thin film was applied. Because the bond-breaker is chemically formed rather than a thick smear of oil, less product transfers onto the concrete, which is why the finish is smoother and the staining and dusting typical of neat mould oils are reduced. The practical corollary is that application discipline matters more than quantity: a thin, continuous, evenly wetted film performs best, while over-application leaves puddles in slab soffits that cause retardation, surface dusting and dark patches. The up-to-3:1 water dilution works precisely because the chemistry is effective at low film thickness; thinning extends coverage without losing the release mechanism, provided the diluted material is applied uniformly and the form is not flooded.

Where it is used

  • Cast-in-situ RCC frames: slabs, beams, columns, shear walls and staircases on plywood and steel shuttering
  • Precast yards: panels, kerbs, drain covers and small precast elements where economical, repeatable release is needed
  • High-rise and large-podium slabs where large formwork areas make a dilutable, low-cost release agent attractive
  • Basements, water tanks and enclosed pours where a lower-solvent water-based agent is preferred over neat mould oil
  • Protecting steel and combination formwork from rust between pours in humid and monsoon conditions
  • Infrastructure and repetitive civil works (box culverts, retaining walls, footings) requiring fast, clean de-shuttering

Key advantages

  • Most economical release agent in the Reebol range, lowering running cost per square metre of formwork
  • Can be diluted with up to 3 parts clean water, dramatically extending coverage and stretching each drum
  • Gives concrete a smooth surface free from the oily stains and patchy discoloration left by cheap mould oils
  • Particularly well suited to wooden (plywood) shuttering, the dominant formwork in Indian construction
  • Protects steel and combination formwork from rusting between pours
  • Water-based and lower in solvent than neat mould oils, better for enclosed and indoor pours
  • Easy to apply by brush, roller or low-pressure spray with no specialist equipment

Limitations & considerations

  • A budget, general-purpose grade — not intended for premium architectural fair-faced concrete where Reebol Emulsion / Emulsion Xtra are better suited
  • Water-based film can be washed off by rain before casting, so freshly coated forms must be protected and may need re-coating
  • Over-application or puddling on slab soffits can cause surface retardation, dusting and dark staining
  • Diluting with dirty or hard water, or over-thinning beyond the recommended ratio, degrades release performance
  • Best results depend on clean formwork and a thin, uniform film — sloppy application shows up directly on the concrete face
  • As a thin-film water-based product it offers less standing rust protection than a heavy oil if forms are stored coated for long periods
  • Not a curing compound, bond-breaker for tilt-up, or a substitute for proper form cleaning and maintenance

Selection & best practice

Always apply Reebol M1 to clean, sound formwork — scrape off old concrete laitance, dust and previous build-up first, as the agent cannot compensate for dirty forms. Dilute with clean (preferably soft) water only, up to the manufacturer’s maximum of 3 parts water to 1 part Reebol M1; mix thoroughly and use the lower dilution for steel and the higher dilution where economy is the priority on absorbent timber. Apply a thin, continuous film by brush, roller or low-pressure spray and then wipe or squeegee off any excess so there is no pooling in horizontal soffits. Coat forms as close to the pour as practical and protect freshly coated formwork from rain, since a water-based film can be washed away. Place concrete before the film dries out completely in hot weather, and re-coat forms before every reuse. Keep containers closed and store in the shade; do not let the product freeze.

Frequently asked questions

What is Fosroc Reebol M1 used for?
It is a water-based chemical mould release agent (shuttering oil) applied to formwork so that hardened concrete strips off cleanly without sticking or tearing. It is best suited to wooden/plywood shuttering but also works on steel forms, and it gives a smooth, stain-free concrete surface.
How much can I dilute Reebol M1 with water?
Fosroc states Reebol M1 can be used with up to 3 parts water to 1 part product. Use clean, preferably soft water, mix well, and use lower dilution on steel and higher dilution where economy matters on absorbent timber. Over-thinning beyond the recommended ratio will weaken release performance.
How is Reebol M1 different from ordinary mould oil?
Ordinary mould oil forms a thick greasy barrier and often leaves oily stains and discoloration. Reebol M1 is a chemical release agent that forms a thin soap film by reacting with the fresh concrete, so it releases cleanly at much lower film thickness and leaves a smoother, cleaner, stain-free face.
How do I apply it and how much do I need?
Apply a thin, continuous film by brush, roller or low-pressure spray on clean formwork, then remove any excess so it does not pool. Coverage for the Reebol range is roughly 20-60 m2 per litre depending on dilution and how porous the formwork is; confirm the figure on the current regional technical data sheet for your batch.
Will Reebol M1 stain or affect later finishes like plaster, tiles or paint?
Used correctly as a thin film it gives a clean, stain-free surface that accepts plaster, tile adhesive and coatings well. The main risk is over-application — puddles on slab soffits can cause dusting and dark patches, so wipe off excess and avoid flooding the form.
Which is better for fair-faced concrete, Reebol M1 or Reebol Emulsion?
Reebol M1 is the economical, general-purpose grade for normal structural concrete. For premium architectural fair-faced finishes with the fewest blowholes, the higher-specification Reebol Emulsion and Reebol Emulsion Xtra grades are the better choice. Space Arc Engineering can advise on the right grade for your job.
Is Reebol M1 available in Delhi NCR and across India?
Yes. Space Arc Engineering is an authorised Fosroc distributor supplying Reebol M1 and the full Reebol range across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, typically in 5 litre, 20 litre and 200 litre packs, with technical support on dilution and application.

How we position Fosroc Reebol M1

Within the Fosroc Reebol range, Reebol M1 is the entry-level, lowest-cost member — the budget choice for everyday structural concrete, especially on plywood shuttering. Step up to Reebol Emulsion or Reebol Emulsion Xtra for higher-quality fair-faced and precast finishes, to Reebol WB / Reebol Standard for other water-based and conventional needs, or to Reebol Emulsion Concentrate where forms are dosed centrally. Against competitor mould release agents — Sika Separol and Sika’s Rugasol surface treatments, MBS (MYK / BASF MasterFinish RL release agents), Dr. Fixit’s shuttering oils, and STP (Shalimar) de-shuttering oils — Reebol M1 competes on price and dilution economy rather than premium finish. For a like-for-like comparison or to select the correct grade for fair-faced, precast, or marine work, Space Arc Engineering (authorised Fosroc distributor, Delhi NCR and Pan-India) can recommend the right product and dilution for your specific formwork and exposure.
