Fosroc Renderoc Primer
A two-component polymer-modified cementitious bonding slurry that locks Fosroc Renderoc repair mortars to prepared concrete and reinforcement for durable, BS EN 1504-3 compliant patch repairs.
What is it?
A two-part (Part A powder + Part B liquid polymer) cementitious bonding slurry that is brush- or scrub-applied to prepared concrete immediately before a Fosroc Renderoc repair mortar is compacted onto it while still wet.
Where is it used?
Concrete repair and rehabilitation works – spalled columns, beams, soffits, chajjas, water tanks, bridge elements and facades – wherever a Renderoc patch-repair mortar is being applied to host concrete or exposed steel.
Why use it?
It creates a high-strength bond between old concrete and new repair mortar, suppresses dust on the substrate and helps the completed repair meet the adhesion requirements of BS EN 1504-3 classes R2, R3 and R4.
How is it applied?
Mix 3 parts Part A to 1 part Part B by volume (4:1 by weight) to a smooth slurry, scrub it firmly into a saturated-surface-dry substrate, then apply the Renderoc mortar wet-on-wet before the primer dries.
About Fosroc Renderoc Primer
Fosroc Renderoc Primer is the dedicated bonding aid within Fosroc’s Renderoc concrete-repair system. It is not a stand-alone repair material or a curing membrane – it is the thin slurry coat that goes down between sound, prepared host concrete and a fresh application of a Renderoc hand-placed or sprayed repair mortar (such as Renderoc HB, Renderoc GP, Renderoc S or Renderoc FC). In Indian repair-and-rehabilitation practice, the bond line between old and new concrete is the single most common point of failure: a patch that debonds, drums out and falls off within a couple of monsoons usually failed at the interface, not in the mortar body. Renderoc Primer exists to make that interface reliable.
The product is supplied as two components. Part A is a bag of specially selected cementitious powders; Part B is a liquid polymer (acrylic/SBR-type) dispersion. On site they are combined at a fixed ratio of 3 parts A to 1 part B by volume (4:1 by weight) and mixed with a slow-speed drill and paddle to a homogeneous, lump-free, milky slurry. The polymer fraction does the heavy lifting – it improves wetting of the substrate, reduces the water demand at the interface, binds loose surface dust and dramatically raises the tensile bond developed once the overlying mortar cures.
For a distributor’s customers in Delhi NCR and across India, the practical appeal is threefold. First, it is a system-matched primer: because Fosroc designs the primer and the Renderoc mortars together, the combined repair is tested to and certified against BS EN 1504-3 (the European standard for structural and non-structural concrete repair) at R2, R3 and R4 performance classes. Second, it doubles as a steel-reinforcement treatment companion in many repair sequences, helping the new mortar grip cleaned, exposed rebar. Third, it is economical – a 5 kg or 25 kg pack covers a useful area, so the cost of priming is small relative to the cost of a repair that fails and has to be redone. The trade-off, which a good applicator must respect, is timing: the primer only works wet-on-wet. If it is allowed to dry to a film before the mortar goes on, it stops being a bond coat and becomes a bond-breaker.
The technical insight
The mechanism is polymer-bridged adhesion rather than simple mechanical keying. When the milky slurry is scrubbed into a saturated-surface-dry (SSD) substrate, the polymer-rich liquid penetrates surface pores and microcracks and binds residual fines that would otherwise act as a weak dust layer. As the overlying Renderoc mortar is compacted wet-on-wet, the still-fluid primer co-hydrates with the fresh mortar, so the two cementitious phases cure as a continuous matrix instead of two layers meeting at a cold joint. The polymer also reduces water suction by the old concrete, which prevents the host slab from robbing mix water from the repair mortar – a classic cause of weak, friable interface zones and plastic-shrinkage crazing in Indian summer conditions. SSD conditioning is therefore not optional: a bone-dry substrate sucks the primer dry too fast, while standing water dilutes the slurry and pushes the effective water/cement ratio at the bond line too high. The correct state is thoroughly pre-soaked concrete with all free surface water removed. Because the system is certified to BS EN 1504-3, the meaningful performance number is the adhesion (pull-off) strength of the completed repair, which the primer is designed to raise into the R2 (>=0.8 MPa), R3 and R4 (>=2.0 MPa) bands when paired with the matching Renderoc mortar.
Where it is used
- Bond coat for Renderoc hand-applied repair mortars (Renderoc HB, GP, S) on spalled RCC columns, beams and slab soffits
- Priming of prepared concrete in cover-spalling repairs to balconies, chajjas, parapets and projecting features
- Interface treatment in carbonation- and chloride-induced corrosion repairs after rebar cleaning and anti-corrosion priming
- Bond coat in water-retaining structures – overhead and underground tanks, sumps and STP/ETP structures – ahead of Renderoc repairs
- Repair of bridge and flyover elements: pier caps, soffits, crash barriers and expansion-joint nosings
- Facade and plaster-substrate stabilisation where a dusty or weak surface needs binding before patch repair
- Industrial and warehouse floor/plinth edge repairs as a bonding layer beneath Renderoc mortars
Key advantages
- Develops high interface bond strength, helping completed repairs meet BS EN 1504-3 classes R2, R3 and R4 with matching Renderoc mortars
- System-matched to the Fosroc Renderoc range, removing guesswork about primer/mortar compatibility
- Binds and suppresses surface dust, converting a marginal substrate into a sound bonding surface
- Polymer modification cuts water suction by the host concrete, reducing risk of weak, friable bond lines
- Simple fixed mix ratio (3:1 by volume) and low-tech scrub-on application suited to Indian site labour
- Economical – a small quantity primes a large repair area, low cost relative to repair value
- Available in handy 5 kg and bulk 25 kg packs to suit small patch jobs and large rehab contracts
- Approved for demanding specifications (e.g. London Underground LUL approval), evidencing third-party scrutiny
Limitations & considerations
- Strictly wet-on-wet – if the primer dries to a film before mortar placement it becomes a bond-breaker and must be re-scrubbed/re-applied
- Not a stand-alone product: it has no value without a compatible Renderoc repair mortar applied over it
- Requires correct saturated-surface-dry substrate conditioning; both dry and water-logged substrates compromise the bond
- Two-component, site-batched material – incorrect ratio or under-mixing reduces performance
- Short working window once mixed, and opened bags of Part A must be resealed and used within 14 days
- Performance is only as good as the surface preparation; it cannot compensate for laitance, loose concrete or un-treated corroded steel
- Temperature-sensitive application (apply at around 5 degrees C and rising; protect from frost) – in Indian summers, fast drying in high heat shortens the wet window
- Not a waterproofing coat, curing membrane or decorative finish
Selection & best practice
Prepare first, prime last. Break out all loose and unsound concrete to a square-edged, sound substrate, expose and clean corroded reinforcement (and apply the specified Fosroc rebar primer such as Nitoprime Zincrich/Galvafroc where required), then bring the concrete to a saturated-surface-dry condition by pre-soaking and removing all free water. Mix only the quantity of Renderoc Primer you can use within its wet window – 3 parts A to 1 part B by volume, drill-mixed to a smooth milky slurry with no lumps. Scrub the primer firmly into the substrate (and over treated rebar) to fill pores, then apply and compact the Renderoc repair mortar wet-on-wet before the primer skins over. In hot Delhi NCR conditions, prime in small bays, work in shade or during cooler hours, and never let the slurry dry before the mortar goes on – if it does, re-prime that area. Cure the completed repair per the Renderoc mortar’s data sheet.

How we position Fosroc Renderoc Primer
Renderoc Primer is best understood as a consumable accessory to a repair system rather than a hero product – its value is realised only when paired with a Fosroc Renderoc repair mortar (Renderoc HB, GP, S, FC). For that reason, Space Arc typically supplies it alongside the chosen Renderoc mortar and, where reinforcement is corroded, with a Fosroc rebar primer (Nitoprime Zincrich / Galvafroc) and the polymer admixture Nitobond family for related bonding tasks. Competing systems offer their own integrated bond coats: Sika pairs SikaTop/Sika MonoTop repair mortars with SikaTop Armatec or Sika bonding primers; MBS (MYK / Master Builders Solutions, formerly BASF) uses the EMACO/MasterEmaco repair range with MasterEmaco P bonding agents; STP (Shalimar/Krishna Conchem) and Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) offer SBR/acrylic bonding agents such as Dr. Fixit Pidicrete URP that perform a similar interface-bonding role for cementitious repairs. The honest distinction is system integrity: Renderoc Primer is engineered, tested and certified specifically with Renderoc mortars to BS EN 1504-3, so mixing brands across the bond line forfeits that matched-system assurance. Where a project is already specified on Sika, MBS or Dr. Fixit repair mortars, the correct bond coat is that manufacturer’s own – but where the repair mortar is Renderoc, Renderoc Primer is the specification-correct choice and a low-cost insurance against interface debonding.
