Fosroc Nitoplate CPS
Pultruded carbon fibre plate for externally bonded flexural strengthening of concrete beams, slabs and bridge girders.
What is it?
A factory-made, pre-cured carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) plate that is epoxy-bonded to the tension face of a concrete member to add flexural capacity.
Where is it used?
Underside of beams and slabs, bridge girders and decks, and over supports for negative-moment zones where load has to be raised without enlarging the section.
Why use it?
It adds high tensile strength at a fraction of steel’s weight, is corrosion-proof, and adds almost no thickness, so headroom and dead load barely change.
How is it applied?
The prepared concrete is primed, coated with Nitowrap 40 structural epoxy, and the plate is pressed on and rolled to bleed out excess adhesive; exposed work is later top-coated for UV protection.
About Fosroc Nitoplate CPS
Nitoplate CPS is Fosroc’s pultruded carbon fibre plate for externally bonded reinforcement, and it sits at the heart of most modern concrete strengthening schemes we execute for consultants across Delhi NCR and the wider Indian market. Unlike a wet lay-up fabric that is cured on site, this plate is produced in a controlled pultrusion line where carbon rovings are drawn through resin and a heated die. The result is a solid strip with a uniform fibre volume fraction and repeatable mechanical properties, so the designer works with a known tensile modulus and strength rather than a number that depends on site workmanship. That predictability is exactly what a structural audit wants to see when a slab or beam is being uprated for heavier live loads.
In practice, the plate does the heavy lifting and the adhesive holds the interface. Fosroc supplies Nitoplate CPS in 1.2 and 1.4 mm thicknesses and in 50, 80 and 100 mm widths (25 mm is also produced), cut from long rolls to the exact bonded length the drawing calls for. It is bonded with Nitowrap 40, a thixotropic structural epoxy that will not sag on a soffit or column face, and where the finished work sits in sun or weather it is over-coated for UV protection. Because Space Arc is an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, engineers get the plate, the matched adhesive and trained application on one supply line, which keeps the warranty chain and the design assumptions intact.
The technical insight
Externally bonded CFRP works because carbon fibre carries enormous tension along its length but does almost nothing in compression or across the fibre. Bonded to the tension face of a beam, the plate acts like extra reinforcement placed at the extreme fibre, lowering the neutral axis and raising the moment the section can resist before the internal steel yields or the concrete crushes. The pultruded form matters here: a uniform fibre volume fraction means the stated modulus of roughly 165 GPa and tensile strength above 2,400 MPa are actually delivered across the whole strip, so deflection control and crack-width behaviour follow the calculation. The governing failure mode is rarely the plate rupturing; it is the bond. That is why the adhesive layer, the concrete pull-off strength and surface preparation dominate the design, and why the plate is only as good as the substrate it is stuck to.
Where it is used
- Flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams carrying increased live or traffic load
- Soffit strengthening of one-way and flat slabs before a change of use or added floor loading
- Bridge girder and deck rehabilitation where deflection and fatigue capacity must be restored
- Negative-moment strengthening over columns and continuous supports
- Strengthening of precast concrete elements uprated beyond their original design
- Seismic flexural upgrade of beams and slabs in existing frames
- Restoring capacity lost to reinforcement corrosion or original construction defects
- Uprating of industrial floor slabs and access structures for heavier plant
Key advantages
- Very high tensile strength-to-weight ratio, so large capacity gains add negligible dead load
- Pultruded consistency gives a known modulus and strength the designer can rely on
- Fully corrosion-resistant, unlike bonded steel plate, so it suits humid, coastal and industrial exposure
- Thin profile (1.2 to 1.4 mm) means almost no loss of headroom or clear cover
- Fast, low-disruption installation that usually needs no propping once cured
- Available in three plate widths so bonded area can be tuned to the demand
- High stiffness helps control deflection and reduce crack widths under service load
- Backed by a matched Fosroc adhesive and coating system for a single-source warranty
Limitations & considerations
- Works only in tension along the fibre, so it strengthens flexure, not shear or compression, on its own
- Capacity is bond-governed; it needs sound concrete with adequate pull-off strength to perform
- Bare CFRP loses stiffness at fire temperatures and needs a rated protective system for fire-critical members
- Carbon fibre is electrically conductive, so it must be isolated from exposed steel to avoid galvanic effects
- Surface preparation and epoxy application are unforgiving and demand trained applicators
- Not a substitute for structural assessment; it can raise capacity but cannot fix a fundamentally deficient member
Selection & best practice
Start with a structural assessment and a bond test, not the plate. Confirm the concrete offers the minimum compressive strength (around 20 to 25 MPa) and a pull-off strength of at least 1.5 MPa, because the bond, not the plate, sets the limit. Grind the substrate to sound aggregate, remove laitance and dust, and make sure it is dry before bonding. Mix and apply Nitowrap 40 within its short pot life, keep a consistent adhesive film, press the plate home and roll out trapped air so the bond line is uniform. End anchorage matters most, so extend the plate well past the point where it is theoretically no longer needed and detail anchorage where debonding could initiate. Protect exposed installations with the specified UV top-coat, and add a fire-rated cladding wherever the strengthening is fire-critical.

How we position Fosroc Nitoplate CPS
Nitoplate CPS is the flat-plate flexural solution within Fosroc’s strengthening range and is always paired with Nitowrap 40 structural adhesive, which we supply alongside it. Where the geometry calls for wrapping rather than a flat strip, such as column confinement, shear U-wraps or curved surfaces, the Fosroc Nitowrap EP(CF) carbon fabric wrap is the right companion. For crack injection and substrate reinstatement ahead of bonding, our Fosroc concrete-repair range (Renderoc mortars and Nitomortar / Nitobond systems) prepares the member. Consultants comparing systems across brands can also weigh Sika CarboDur plates and Sika Wrap fabrics, or MC-Bauchemie’s strengthening laminates; we stock and apply across these families and can match the specification to the assessment rather than to a single brand.
