Fosroc Nitoflor Traffigard
A multi-layer, crack-bridging polyurethane deck system that waterproofs and armours car park decks, ramps and podiums against vehicle traffic, fuel spills and UV.
What is it?
A liquid-applied, multi-layer polyurethane traffic deck coating system (primer, flexible topcoat and wear course) that cures on site into a seamless, waterproof, skid-resistant surface.
Where is it used?
Exposed and covered car park decks, ramps, podium slabs, service centres, workshops, transport depots and aircraft hangars carrying vehicular traffic.
Why use it?
It bridges live cracks up to and beyond 0.8 mm, keeps water and chlorides out of the slab, and takes tyre wear, oil and fuel without breaking down.
How is it applied?
Roller- or squeegee-applied in layers over a prepared, dry slab: primer blinded with anti-slip grain, one to two topcoats, then a UV-resistant wear course, each cured before the next.
About Fosroc Nitoflor Traffigard
Traffigard is Fosroc’s polyurethane traffic-deck protection system, and in practice it is the product most engineers know by its Trafficguard family name. Rather than a single paint, it is a build-up of chemically reacting liquid layers that together turn a bare or tired concrete deck into a single seamless, waterproof, hard-wearing membrane. A penetrating primer keys into the substrate, a flexible polyurethane topcoat forms the elastic waterproofing core that moves with the slab, and a UV-resistant wear course carries the daily punishment of turning, braking tyres. The result is a floor that behaves as one continuous skin with no joints for water to exploit.
For an Indian car park, that combination matters. Decks here face standing monsoon water, chloride-laden runoff, dripping engine oil and fuel, and slabs that flex and crack under thermal movement and load. A rigid coating would simply crack where the concrete cracks; Traffigard stays elastic, spanning dynamic cracks while sealing the surface against the ingress that drives reinforcement corrosion and spalling. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies the system across Delhi NCR and pan-India, matching the right build-up and wear course to whether the deck is exposed to sun and rain or sits under cover.
The technical insight
The system works because each layer does one job and the polyurethane chemistry gives it elasticity that rigid epoxies lack. The membrane-forming topcoat cures to roughly 200% elongation with about 96% recovery, so it stretches as a crack opens under a moving vehicle and pulls back when the load passes — the datasheet reports no cracking in ASTM C836 crack-bridging testing. Because the layers are liquid-applied and react in place, there are no laps or seams; water has no edge to track along, which is what keeps chlorides and moisture out of the slab and away from the steel. The wear course then sits on top as the sacrificial, UV-stable, skid-resistant face (coefficient of friction greater than 0.8 by ASTM F609), taking abrasion so the waterproofing layer beneath is never exposed. Tensile strength around 10 N/mm² and tear resistance around 25 N/mm, with Shore A hardness of about 85, give it the toughness to survive point loads and turning forces without going brittle.
Where it is used
- Waterproofing and protecting exposed multi-storey and rooftop car park decks
- Coating car park ramps and inclined access roads where braking and turning forces are high
- Podium and terrace slabs over occupied space that must stay watertight
- Service centres, garages and vehicle workshops with oil and fuel exposure
- Transport depots for buses, coaches and taxis carrying repetitive heavy traffic
- Aircraft hangar floors and heavy vehicle loading and dispatch bays
- Renovation and re-waterproofing of existing, cracked or worn concrete decks
- Delivering colour-zoned parking bays, drive lanes and marked circulation routes
Key advantages
- Flexible polyurethane membrane bridges dynamic, moving cracks instead of cracking with the slab
- Seamless and watertight — no joints or laps for water and chlorides to penetrate
- UV-resistant wear course keeps colour and surface intact on fully exposed decks
- Skid-resistant textured finish (coefficient of friction >0.8) for safe braking and turning
- Resists petrol, diesel, engine oil, jet fuel, brake fluid, mineral spirits and dilute acids
- Suitable for every zone of a car park, from ramps to open decks to covered bays
- Rapid, roller-applied build-up that returns decks to service quickly
- Available in standard deck colours and can be matched to RAL shades for zoning
Limitations & considerations
- Not for slabs suffering rising damp or relative humidity above 80% (per BS8203) — the coating can fail to bond or blister
- New concrete must have cured at least 28 days and reached about 80% of its properties before coating
- Primer and wear course are flammable (flash points 59°C and 23°C) — keep away from naked flame and ventilate well
- Do not apply if rain is imminent or temperatures may drop below 7°C within 24 hours of application
- Substrate must be at least 3°C above dew point; high-humidity conditions (85–90%) demand strong ventilation
- Surface preparation is exacting — laitance, oil, curing compounds and blowholes must be removed or repaired first, so it is not a quick cosmetic overlay
Selection & best practice
Success depends far more on the deck than the coating. Prepare the slab to a clean, sound, dry surface with open capillaries — mechanically remove laitance, oil, grease and old curing compounds, and make good every blowhole and undulation with a suitable Fosroc repair mortar before priming. Confirm moisture is under control (relative humidity below 80%) and the substrate is at least 3°C above dew point. Apply Traffigard Primer at 0.2–0.3 litre/m², and while it is still wet, broadcast Anti-Slip Grain No. 2 at roughly 0.4–0.8 kg/m², then leave 16 hours at 35°C before knocking back the excess. Roll the flexible topcoat at 0.4–0.5 litre/m² per coat with a short-haired lambswool roller, then finish with the wear course at 0.1–0.2 litre/m² per coat. Respect cure times before use — foot traffic after about 24 hours at 25°C (18 hours at 35°C) and vehicles after 5 days at 25°C (72 hours at 35°C) — and hold off line marking with Trafficguard Line Marking Paint until five days after application. In peak summer, store material cool, shade equipment and avoid the hottest hours of the day.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor Traffigard
Traffigard sits at the exposed, flexible end of Fosroc’s flooring range, distinct from the rigid Nitoflor epoxy and PU screeds (such as Nitoflor FC150 or Nitoflor Floorcrete PU) meant for internal factory and warehouse floors — choose those where you want a hard chemical-resistant floor, and Traffigard where the deck moves, sees UV and must stay waterproof. Within the same system, pair it with Fosroc Trafficguard Primer for the bond coat and Trafficguard Line Marking Paint (TLMP) for bay and lane marking. For the concrete making-good that must precede coating, Space Arc pairs it with Fosroc’s Renderoc repair mortars and Nitobond bonding aids. Where a project prefers a cementitious deck-waterproofing route instead of a liquid PU coating, our Dr. Fixit and MC-Bauchemie ranges offer alternative membranes, and for internal heavy-duty floors our Sika and Master Builders Solutions flooring lines are natural comparisons.
