Fosroc Durocrete
A monolithic dry-shake surface hardener that turns fresh concrete slabs into dense, dust-free, abrasion-resistant industrial floors.
What is it?
A factory-blended dry-shake floor hardener of graded aggregate, cement and additives, broadcast onto fresh concrete and trowelled in to form a hard-wearing integral surface.
Where is it used?
Warehouse, factory, logistics and distribution-centre floors carrying forklift, pallet and heavy foot traffic across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
Why use it?
It eliminates surface dusting, resists abrasion far better than plain concrete, and costs less than a separate applied topping because it is placed during the pour.
How is it applied?
Broadcast dry at 3-5 kg/m2 (up to 8 kg/m2 for heavy duty) once bleed water recedes, float in, then power-trowel to a dense finish and cure.
About Fosroc Durocrete
Durocrete is Fosroc’s dry-shake floor hardener, a job-site staple wherever a concrete slab has to survive years of forklift wheels, pallet drag and steel-shod traffic without breaking down into dust. It arrives as a factory-controlled powder blend of specially graded hard-wearing aggregate, Portland cement and workability additives. Rather than coating the finished floor, the powder is cast into the slab itself during placement, so the wearing surface and the base concrete become one continuous body with no bond line to peel or debond later.
The appeal for contractors and consultants is simple economics and reliability. Because Durocrete goes down in the same operation as the slab, there is no second mobilisation, no surface preparation for a coating, and no curing-and-recoat waiting game. You get a monolithic, high-density top few millimetres that absorbs the bleed water otherwise trapped as weak laitance, which is exactly the layer that causes ordinary floors to dust and ravel. For most warehouse and factory decks in India, that combination of durability at pour stage and low applied cost is why Durocrete keeps getting specified over post-applied hardeners and coatings.
The technical insight
The performance comes from what happens in the top 3-5 mm of the slab during finishing. Freshly placed concrete pushes water upward as it consolidates; that bleed water dilutes the cement paste at the surface and leaves behind laitance, a weak, dusty skin. When Durocrete is broadcast onto that plastic surface, the powder’s cement fraction draws on the rising bleed water to hydrate in place, while the graded hard aggregate packs tightly against the trowel. Power-floating then works the blend into the matrix, so instead of a water-rich weak layer you get a dense, low-porosity wearing course keyed monolithically into the parent concrete. The hard aggregate carries the abrasive load and the reduced surface porosity is what suppresses dusting; the two effects together are why a Durocrete floor outlasts a plain trowelled slab under the same wheeled traffic.
Where it is used
- Warehouse and logistics floors carrying continuous forklift and reach-truck traffic
- Manufacturing and factory shop floors needing an abrasion-resistant deck
- Distribution and fulfilment centre slabs with heavy pallet movement
- Retail and cold-store warehousing where floor dusting must be avoided
- Loading bays, ramps and trucking lanes exposed to point loads and turning wheels
- Vehicle parking decks and external hardstanding areas
- Large open-plan slabs where a separate applied coating is uneconomical
- Engineering and assembly halls requiring a clean, hard, low-maintenance surface
Key advantages
- Forms a monolithic wearing surface bonded integrally to the slab, with no separate topping to debond
- Absorbs surface bleed water and removes the weak laitance that causes floor dusting
- Delivers markedly higher abrasion resistance than a plain trowelled concrete surface
- Applied within the concreting operation, saving a second mobilisation and surface preparation
- Lower applied cost than post-applied floor coatings for large-area industrial decks
- Factory-blended for consistent aggregate grading and repeatable finish batch to batch
- Available in natural grey with oxide-pigmented colour options for zoning and aesthetics
- Simple, well-understood dry-shake method that trained floor crews can place at speed
Limitations & considerations
- Must be broadcast during the plastic state of the concrete; miss the finishing window and it will not key in properly
- Placement quality depends heavily on crew skill and correctly timed power-trowelling
- Effective only in the top few millimetres, so it hardens the surface but does not add structural capacity to the slab
- Requires proper curing immediately after finishing or the surface can craze and lose strength
- Not a chemical-resistant layer; aggressive spillage environments still need a resin coating over it
- Colour uniformity of pigmented grades can vary with mix, dosage and curing practice on site
Selection & best practice
Success is decided at the finishing stage. Design the slab and pour so the crew can reach and broadcast the whole area within the finishing window, and apply Durocrete only after the initial bleed water has receded. Broadcast in two passes for even coverage: put down roughly two-thirds of the dose first, float it in as it darkens with absorbed moisture, then apply the balance and float again before power-trowelling to a dense, closed finish. Keep dosage in the 3-5 kg/m2 range for normal duty and raise toward 8 kg/m2 for the heaviest traffic. Cure immediately after final trowelling, applying Fosroc Concure WB or an equivalent membrane, or use wet hessian and polythene, and maintain effective curing for at least 7 days. If an epoxy or polyurethane coating is to follow, confirm the curing compound is compatible or mechanically remove it before overcoating. For material take-off and site sequencing on Delhi NCR and Pan-India projects, Space Arc can advise dosage and colour selection against your traffic loads.

How we position Fosroc Durocrete
Durocrete is the right choice when you want an abrasion-resistant, dust-free industrial floor placed economically as part of the slab pour. Within the Fosroc floor-hardener range, the Nitoflor Hardtop family is the natural step up: it adds heavy-duty metallic and non-metallic grades for the most punishing traffic, so specifiers move to it when Durocrete’s normal-duty performance is not enough. Pair either hardener with Fosroc Concure WB for correct curing, and for spillage-prone or chemically aggressive areas overcoat with a Fosroc Nitoflor epoxy or polyurethane system. Space Arc also carries comparable dry-shake and resin flooring systems from other brands we stock, so we can match the specification to your loading, budget and programme.
