Dr. Fixit Fibertape
Self-adhesive, alkali-resistant glass fibre mesh tape that reinforces cracks, joints and junctions inside liquid-applied waterproofing systems — stocked and applied by Space Arc Engineering across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
What is it?
A self-adhesive woven mesh tape made from AR (alkali-resistant) glass fibre with a zirconia-rich coating, used as embedded reinforcement inside waterproofing membranes.
Where is it used?
Cracks, construction joints, wall-floor and column-wall junctions, parapet upstands, pipe penetrations and tank corners on concrete and masonry — under terrace, basement and wet-area coatings.
Why use it?
A liquid membrane on its own can rupture where the substrate cracks or moves; an embedded mesh spreads that strain across its weave so the coating stays continuous and watertight.
How is it applied?
Pressed onto the first coat of membrane while it is still tacky, centred over the crack or joint, then fully encapsulated by the following coats.
About Dr. Fixit Fibertape
Dr. Fixit Fibertape from Pidilite Industries is a woven glass fibre mesh tape with a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing, made specifically for reinforcing the weak points in a waterproofing job — cracks, joints and changes of plane. The fibre is AR (alkali-resistant) grade with a zirconia-rich coating, which matters more than it sounds: ordinary glass fibre slowly loses strength when it sits inside the high-pH environment of Portland cement, whereas the zirconia coating protects the filaments so the mesh keeps working for the life of the membrane. Accelerated ageing data cited for the product shows the tape retaining more than 80% of its tensile strength after exposure equivalent to five years in cement.
On site, Fibertape functions as a system accessory rather than a standalone product. It is designed to be sandwiched between coats of Dr. Fixit liquid membranes — acrylic, PU or crystalline systems such as Dr. Fixit 201 Acrylic, Dr. Fixit Coat and Dr. Fixit Krystalline — over dry or damp concrete and masonry. Rolls come in 100 mm and 150 mm widths, 50 metres long, so applicators can run narrow strips along hairline cracks or wider bands across junctions without site-cutting a full mesh sheet.
The technical insight
The mechanism is straightforward strain distribution. When a crack beneath a coating opens even fractionally, the entire movement concentrates across a membrane thickness of barely a millimetre — enough local elongation to tear most coatings. Embedding a mesh at that location changes the load path: the woven glass carries the tensile force (minimum 1500 N per 50 mm in the warp direction, 1200 N in the weft) and distributes the strain over the full tape width instead of a single line. The open weave is equally important — the wet membrane strikes through the apertures and locks the tape between coats, so the finished detail behaves as one monolithic composite. The zirconia-coated AR glass ensures this reinforcement does not quietly corrode away in the alkaline cement matrix the way standard E-glass would.
Where it is used
- Bridging static and hairline-to-moderate cracks in slabs, screeds and plaster before membrane application
- Reinforcing construction joints and cold joints in roof slabs, rafts and retaining walls
- Wall-floor and column-wall junctions in basements, bathrooms and other wet areas
- Terrace waterproofing details — parapet upstands, khurras, rainwater outlets and vent penetrations
- Sealing detail around pipe sleeves and service penetrations through slabs and walls
- Corner and joint reinforcement in concrete water tanks and sumps, embedded in a suitable tank-grade coating
- Strengthening membrane terminations and coat-to-coat overlaps on masonry surfaces
Key advantages
- Self-adhesive backing holds the tape exactly where it is placed — no separate primer or tack coat needed for positioning
- Zirconia-coated AR glass resists alkaline attack, retaining over 80% tensile strength in cited accelerated-ageing tests
- High tensile capacity — minimum 1500/1200 N per 50 mm width (warp/weft) — for genuine crack-bridging performance
- Applies to dry or damp concrete and masonry, which suits Indian site conditions and monsoon-season schedules
- Open weave lets the liquid membrane strike through, creating a fully bonded coat-mesh-coat sandwich
- Two roll widths (100 mm and 150 mm) cover both narrow cracks and wide junction details, and the tape cuts cleanly on site
- Compatible across the Dr. Fixit membrane range — acrylic, PU and crystalline systems
Limitations & considerations
- It is a reinforcement accessory, not a waterproofing membrane — used alone it stops nothing; it must be fully embedded in a compatible coating
- Not suitable for live expansion joints or joints designed for large movement; those need a proper sealant-and-bond-breaker or expansion-joint tape detail
- The self-adhesion is a positioning aid only — long-term anchorage depends entirely on complete encapsulation by the membrane coats
- Must not be left exposed; UV, foot traffic and abrasion will damage an unencapsulated mesh before the top coats go on
- Adhesion and embedment suffer on friable, dusty, oily or laitance-covered substrates — surface preparation cannot be skipped
Selection & best practice
Prepare the substrate first: remove laitance, dust and any curing compound, and rout out and pre-fill significant cracks so the surface is sound. Mark the crack or joint line, then apply the first coat of the chosen Dr. Fixit membrane in a band comfortably wider than the tape. While that coat is still tacky, unroll the Fibertape centred over the line and press it flat with a dry roller or float — work from one end to avoid wrinkles, folds or trapped air, all of which create voids in the finished detail. Check that membrane has struck through the mesh apertures, then apply the subsequent coats to bury the tape completely; no fibre pattern should remain visible in the final surface. At junctions, form the fillet or coving first and lap the tape onto both planes. Use 100 mm rolls for cracks and joints, 150 mm where the detail spans a junction or penetration.

Industry use cases
Residential terraces and podiums
Run along slab cracks, parapet junctions and khurras before acrylic or PU terrace coatings, so seasonal thermal movement does not open leak paths through the membrane.
Basements and substructure
Reinforce wall-floor junctions, kicker joints and construction joints under crystalline or coating-based basement systems, where hydrostatic pressure finds every weak line.
High-rise bathrooms and wet areas
Standardise junction and drain-penetration detailing across hundreds of identical bathrooms — a repeatable tape-and-coat detail that site teams can execute consistently.
Water tanks and sumps
Embed at corner junctions and construction joints within a tank-grade coating; confirm the membrane’s suitability for potable contact separately with the coating TDS.
Industrial roofs and utility structures
Bridge joints and repaired cracks on sheds, chajjas and utility decks before protective waterproof coatings, extending recoat cycles in aggressive exposure.

How we position Dr. Fixit Fibertape
Fibertape is the reinforcement layer of a waterproofing system, so specify it alongside the membrane it will live in: Dr. Fixit 201 Acrylic or Dr. Fixit Coat for terraces, Dr. Fixit Aquashield PU where higher elasticity is needed, and Dr. Fixit Krystalline for basements and tanks. For defined wet-area joints, pair it with Dr. Fixit Bathseal Tape and Dr. Fixit Pipe Collar rather than stretching the mesh beyond its role. Where a joint is designed for real movement, step up to a proper joint treatment — we supply Fosroc and Sika sealant and expansion-joint systems for exactly that. Space Arc Engineering can help you match the full detail, not just the tape.
