Master Builders Solutions MasterEmaco S 488
Dual shrinkage-compensated, fibre-reinforced thixotropic mortar for structural concrete repair — EN 1504-3 Class R4, 12–50 mm per layer by hand or wet spray, on vertical and overhead faces without formwork.
What is it?
A single-component, high-strength (≥70 MPa at 28 days), high-modulus cementitious repair mortar with acrylic fibres and dual shrinkage compensation. Formerly Emaco S88C T; now sold in India as SikaEmaco S 488.
Where is it used?
Structural repair of bridge piers, girders and cross beams, cooling towers, chimneys, silos, dams, STP/WTP structures, tunnels, outfalls, jetties and marine deck slabs.
Why use it?
It meets EN 1504-3 Class R4 — the highest structural repair class — so the reinstated section genuinely shares load with the parent concrete instead of just filling the cavity.
How is it applied?
Mix each 25 kg bag with 3.25–3.75 L water, work a scrape coat into the pre-soaked substrate, then build 12–50 mm per layer by trowel or wet spray. Moist-cure with hessian and polythene.
About Master Builders Solutions MasterEmaco S 488
When a spalled bridge pier or a delaminated silo wall needs its section restored — not just cosmetically patched — the repair material has to behave like structural concrete. MasterEmaco S 488 was engineered for exactly that job. It is a grey, ready-to-use powder that needs only clean water on site, producing a thixotropic mortar that hangs on vertical and overhead faces at up to 50 mm in a single layer without formwork. Compressive strength reaches ≥20 MPa within a day and ≥70 MPa at 28 days (ASTM C109), with a modulus of elasticity of ≥15,000 N/mm² — stiff enough to carry its share of load in an R4-classified structural repair under EN 1504-3.
A note on the name, because it confuses buyers: this product began life as Emaco S88C T, became MasterEmaco S 488 under Master Builders Solutions, and after Sika’s acquisition of the MBCC portfolio it now ships in India as SikaEmaco S 488. It is the same formulation lineage, manufactured by Sika India. Space Arc Engineering supplies it against both names and, as an approved applicator, can take on the full repair scope — from substrate preparation and rebar treatment through spray application and curing — across Delhi NCR and pan-India project sites.
The technical insight
The failure mode that kills most patch repairs is shrinkage: the new mortar contracts against a rigid parent substrate, debonds at the perimeter, and the repair hollows out within a couple of monsoon cycles. MasterEmaco S 488 attacks this with dual shrinkage compensation — controlled expansion in both the plastic phase (offsetting early water loss) and the hardened phase (offsetting long-term drying shrinkage), while dispersed acrylic fibres stitch across the microcracks that do initiate. The second pillar is the very low water demand: a water-powder ratio of just 0.13–0.15 yields a dense matrix of roughly 2,300 kg/m³ that admits less than 5 mm of water penetration under 5 bar pressure (DIN 1048) and shows no measurable carbonation in the EN 13295 test. That density is what protects the rebar behind the repair from chlorides and CO2. Finally, the high elastic modulus matters structurally: a soft mortar in a loaded column simply sheds stress back onto the damaged core, whereas this mortar is stiffness-matched to accept load — the defining requirement of a Class R4 material.
Where it is used
- Jacketing and spall repair of bridge columns, piers, girders and cross beams
- Structural repair of cooling towers, chimneys and silos in power and process plants
- Reinstatement of dams, water treatment and sewage treatment structures before protective coating
- Repairs in tunnels, pipes, outfalls and below-ground construction
- Marine structures — jetties, wharves, deck slabs and splash-zone members
- Vertical and overhead repair of RCC beams, slabs and columns in building rehabilitation
- Wet-spray (low-rebound) repair over large areas where hand application is too slow
- Section build-up on carbonated or freeze-thaw damaged concrete in exposed environments
Key advantages
- Certified EN 1504-3 Class R4 — approved for genuinely structural repairs, not just reprofiling
- High early and final strength: ≥20 MPa in 1 day, ≥70 MPa at 28 days (ASTM C109)
- Builds 12–50 mm in one layer, vertically and overhead, without shuttering
- Dual shrinkage compensation plus fibre reinforcement keeps the patch crack-free and bonded (≥2.0 MPa pull-off, EN 1542)
- Single-component — only water is added on site, so mix quality does not depend on site batching skill
- Applied by trowel or wet-spray, with a bonding primer needed only at selected locations
- Very low permeability (<5 mm water penetration at 5 bar) with high carbonation and freeze-thaw resistance
- Class A1 fire rating (EN 13501-1) and chloride-free composition, safe over reinforcement
Limitations & considerations
- Minimum 12 mm layer thickness — not suitable for feather-edge or shallow cosmetic patches, which need a fairing/renovation mortar
- Maximum 50 mm per layer; deeper cavities require multiple layers or a flowable micro-concrete with formwork
- Pot life is only about 45 minutes at 30 °C and drops further in peak Indian summer — mix in batches the crew can place
- Application window is +5 to +35 °C substrate and ambient; avoid application in strong winds
- Performance depends on preparation: the substrate must be sound (≥1.5 N/mm² tensile), edge-cut to 6 mm and pre-soaked — shortcuts here cause debonding
- Shelf life is 6 months from production, shorter than many cementitious products, so order against consumption rather than stockpiling
Selection & best practice
Break out all loose and delaminated concrete and roughen the substrate by grit blasting or high-pressure water jetting until coarse aggregate is exposed; the prepared surface should achieve at least 1.5 N/mm² in a pull-off test. Saw-cut repair perimeters square to a minimum 6 mm depth — never feather out. Clean exposed rebar to Sa 2 and, where the concrete is chloride-contaminated or cover is under 10 mm, prime the steel with a protective primer such as Sika MonoTop-1010 IN. Pre-soak the substrate for at least 2 hours (ideally 12) to a mat-damp, no-standing-water condition. Mix one 25 kg bag with 3.25–3.75 litres of clean water in a forced-action mixer for about 3 minutes — never exceed the maximum water dose, and never re-temper mortar that has begun to set. Work a thin scrape coat or slurry into the surface, then place the mortar wet-on-wet to 12–50 mm by trowel or spray. Finish once the mortar stiffens (60–90 minutes at 30 °C), then cure immediately under wet hessian and polythene for 1–7 days depending on weather. On hot Delhi-NCR sites, schedule placing for early morning and shade mixed material.

Industry use cases
Bridges & Flyovers
Spall repair and section reinstatement of piers, pier caps, girders and cross beams on highway and metro structures, where R4 classification and ≥50 MPa strength at 3 days keep lane-closure windows short.
Power & Heavy Industry
Repair of cooling tower shells, chimneys and silos — spray application covers large curved areas with low rebound, and the dense matrix resists sulphate-laden and humid industrial exposure.
Water & Wastewater
Reinstatement of dams, intake structures and STP/WTP tanks before protective coating; <5 mm water penetration at 5 bar suits permanently wet service.
Marine & Ports
Jetty beams, wharf soffits and deck slabs in the splash zone, where chloride-free composition and very low permeability slow re-initiation of rebar corrosion.
Building Rehabilitation
Structural repair of corrosion-damaged beams, columns and slab soffits in ageing residential, commercial and institutional RCC frames — overhead work without shuttering keeps occupied buildings functional.

How we position Master Builders Solutions MasterEmaco S 488
MasterEmaco S 488 is the workhorse hand/spray structural repair mortar in the MasterEmaco (now SikaEmaco) family. Around it, Space Arc typically specifies MasterEmaco S 348 free-flow micro-concrete for formed, large-volume reinstatement beyond 50 mm; Sika MonoTop-1010 IN as the rebar protection and bonding primer where chloride contamination or low cover demands it; and MasterSeal or Sikagard protective coatings over the completed repair to lock in carbonation and chloride resistance. Where a project standardises on Fosroc, our equivalent offer is the Renderoc high-build repair range, and for strengthening beyond section repair we move to MasterBrace FRP systems. Talk to us before finalising the BOQ — matching mortar class (R4 vs R3), depth and exposure to the right product usually saves both material cost and rework.
