Quick answers

MasterTop® 100 at a glance

The essentials specifiers and contractors ask first — answered straight from the product data, with links to go deeper.

What is it?

MasterTop® 100 is a factory pre-blended, non-metallic dry-shake surface hardener combining a hydraulic (cementitious) binder with specially graded, hard-wearing mineral aggregates. It is part of the Master Builders Solutions range (formerly BASF Construction Chemicals); in Asia-Pacific the line has been rebranded Sikafloor® QuartzTop-100.

Where is it used?

It is specified for light-to-moderate-duty industrial and commercial concrete floors — warehouses and storage areas, mechanical and light workshops, basements and cellars, corridors and halls, parking and loading areas, and institutional, retail and commercial floors that need a coloured, abrasion-resistant wearing surface.

Why use it?

It increases surface wear resistance — the manufacturer states up to roughly twice the serviceable life of untreated concrete — giving a dense, low-porosity, low-dusting floor that is easier to clean and available in a range of colours, including light-reflective formulations. It avoids the cost and rust risk of a metallic-aggregate topping where traffic is not severe.

How is it applied?

It is broadcast as a dry shake onto freshly placed, levelled and power-floated concrete once free surface bleed water has disappeared, applied in two passes, then floated and trowelled in monolithically so it bonds integrally with the base slab. Always follow the current Master Builders Solutions method statement; request the latest TDS from Space Arc before starting.

Key advantages

  • Increases surface wear resistance, with up to roughly twice the serviceable life of untreated concrete (manufacturer claim)
  • Verified abrasion resistance of under 0.75 g wear (ASTM C501, H22 wheel, 1000 cycles) per the India TDS
  • Hard natural mineral aggregate (approximately 7-8 on the Mohs scale) concentrated at the trafficked surface

Overview

About MasterTop® 100

A plain-language overview of what MasterTop® 100 is, the problem it solves and how Space Arc Engineering positions it in a specification.

MasterTop® 100 is a non-metallic, cementitious dry-shake floor hardener from Master Builders Solutions (the construction-chemicals business formerly part of BASF). It is supplied as a ready-to-use powder that already contains the hydraulic binder and a high proportion of specially sized and graded mineral aggregates — there is nothing to mix on site. The hardener is broadcast onto the surface of fresh concrete and worked in by power-float and trowel, so the wearing layer is formed in the same pour as the structural slab rather than as a separate bonded topping.

The result is a denser, harder, more closely knit floor surface than plain concrete. Because the high-wear aggregate is concentrated exactly where abrasion occurs — at the trafficked surface — the floor resists scuffing, gouging and dusting from foot traffic, trolleys, pallet movement and light vehicles. The finish can be pigmented, which both improves appearance and helps with zoning, and is available in light-reflective formulations that lift ambient light levels and can reduce artificial lighting requirements.

Within the Master Builders flooring family, MasterTop® 100 sits at the light-to-moderate-duty end of dry-shake hardeners. Where traffic is genuinely severe — heavy forklift fleets, steel-wheeled trucks, hard impact — a metallic-aggregate hardener (such as the MasterTop® 200 series) is the correct specification. Space Arc Engineering supplies MasterTop® 100 and can advise on, and carry out, the application as part of an industrial-flooring package.

How it works

The technical insight

Why MasterTop® 100 behaves the way it does — the mechanism behind the performance, in specifier-friendly terms.

A dry-shake hardener works on the principle of monolithic surface enrichment. As the placed slab bleeds and stiffens, the dry powder is cast onto the surface in measured passes; the aggregate and binder draw up residual moisture from the concrete below and are then floated and trowelled so they fuse with the cement paste of the parent slab. This builds a thin, very dense wearing course — typically a few millimetres — that has a much lower water-cement ratio at the surface and a far higher proportion of hard aggregate than ordinary concrete, which is what gives the abrasion performance.

The performance benefit is real and measurable. The India technical datasheet reports abrasion resistance of less than 0.75 grams of wear under the ASTM C501 test (H22 wheel, 1000 cycles), and Master Builders positions the product as delivering up to roughly twice the serviceable life of untreated concrete. The hardening aggregate is a natural mineral rated about 7-8 on the Mohs scale (datasheet tables quote 7 to 7-8 depending on the sheet), considerably harder than the quartz sand and limestone typical of a plain floor. Crucially, the hardness comes from the aggregate and from densification, not from any chemical resistance: the product is intended for areas not exposed to serious chemical attack, so it relies on a low-porosity, easy-to-clean surface rather than on resisting aggressive acids, salts or solvents.

Limitations & considerations

Where MasterTop® 100 is not the right answer. Check these constraints from the manufacturer before specifying — using it outside its scope is the most common cause of failure.

  • Light-to-moderate-duty only — for heavy forklift fleets, steel wheels or hard impact, a metallic-aggregate hardener (e.g. the MasterTop® 200 series) should be specified instead
  • Not a chemical-resistant floor: the product is for areas not exposed to serious chemical attack and is not recommended where acids, salts or materials that rapidly attack Portland cement are present — for those, an epoxy/PU coating or screed is required
  • Performance depends entirely on correct timing and finishing of fresh concrete; it cannot be applied to hardened or existing slabs and is unforgiving of poor float/trowel discipline
  • Cures with the slab, so it inherits the base concrete's curing and crack-control needs — proper curing and well-designed joints remain essential to avoid surface crazing
  • Application rate is reduced for vacuum-dewatered floors (India TDS caps it at 5 kg/m²); colour uniformity also requires consistent dosing, concrete mix and finishing across a pour
Get it right

Selection & best practice

How to decide whether MasterTop® 100 fits your job — and how to apply it so the repair lasts.

Specify MasterTop® 100 when you want a coloured, abrasion-resistant, low-dusting concrete floor for light-to-moderate traffic and the cost or rust risk of a metallic hardener is not justified. Step up to a metallic-aggregate dry-shake (MasterTop® 200 family) for heavy or impact traffic, and move to a resin (epoxy/PU) coating or screed where chemical resistance, hygiene/seamlessness or specific colour control is the governing requirement. Where appearance and reflectivity matter — showrooms, retail, institutional areas — the light-reflective formulations are worth specifying. Always confirm the current grade, colour range and dosage against the latest TDS, as the line is regionally rebranded (Asia-Pacific: Sikafloor® QuartzTop-100).

Application best practice

  1. Design and place the base slab correctly: appropriate mix, adequate cover of bleed water management, and a power-floatable surface are prerequisites for a good shake finish
  2. Apply only after free surface water has disappeared and the concrete can bear a float; broadcast the hardener in two passes (typically two-thirds then one-third of the dose) for even coverage and colour
  3. Float each pass in as soon as it has darkened with moisture from below, then power-trowel to a dense, closed finish — do not over-trowel or burn the surface
  4. Use the correct application rate for the duty and slab type (see specs) and reduce the rate for vacuum-dewatered floors per the TDS; weigh out per bay to keep dosing consistent
  5. Cure immediately and thoroughly after final trowelling (curing compound or approved method) to prevent surface crazing and to develop strength
  6. Plan joints and saw-cut on time; protect the finished floor from traffic until adequately cured, and request the Master Builders method statement and current TDS from Space Arc before mobilising

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about specifying and sourcing MasterTop® 100.

What exactly is MasterTop® 100?

It is a factory pre-blended, non-metallic dry-shake surface hardener from Master Builders Solutions (formerly BASF Construction Chemicals). The powder contains a hydraulic binder plus specially graded hard mineral aggregate. Broadcast onto fresh concrete and trowelled in, it forms a dense, abrasion-resistant, low-dusting coloured wearing surface that is integral with the slab. In Asia-Pacific the same line is now branded Sikafloor® QuartzTop-100.

How much harder-wearing is it than plain concrete?

The India datasheet records abrasion resistance of less than 0.75 g of wear under ASTM C501 (H22 wheel, 1000 cycles), and Master Builders states the floor can last up to roughly twice the serviceable life of untreated concrete. The benefit comes from concentrating hard mineral aggregate (about 7-8 on the Mohs scale) and densifying the surface exactly where wear occurs.

What is the application rate?

Per the India TDS, typical rates are about 3-5 kg/m² for light duty, 5-6 kg/m² for medium duty and 6-8 kg/m² for heavy duty, with a maximum of 5 kg/m² on vacuum-dewatered concrete. Confirm the exact rate for your floor against the current datasheet, as published figures vary slightly between regional sheets. Space Arc can supply the latest TDS.

Is MasterTop® 100 chemical resistant — can it handle oils, acids or solvents?

No. It is designed for areas not exposed to serious chemical attack and is not recommended where acids, salts or materials that rapidly attack Portland cement are present. It gives a dense, easy-to-clean surface, but where genuine chemical resistance is needed an epoxy or polyurethane coating/screed should be specified instead.

Is it suitable for heavy forklift traffic?

It is positioned for light-to-moderate-duty traffic. For heavy forklift fleets, steel-wheeled trucks or hard impact, the added abrasion and impact resistance of a metallic-aggregate hardener (such as the MasterTop® 200 series) is the correct choice. MasterTop® 100 is ideal where that level of duty is not required.

How is it applied and can it go onto an existing floor?

It is a dry shake for fresh concrete only. It is broadcast in two passes onto freshly placed, levelled, power-floated concrete once bleed water has gone, then floated and trowelled in monolithically and cured immediately. It cannot be applied to hardened or existing slabs — those require a bonded topping or resin system. Follow the Master Builders method statement.

What colours and pack sizes are available, and what is the shelf life?

It comes in a selected range of colours, including light-reflective formulations that boost ambient light. It is supplied in 25 kg moisture-resistant bags with a stated shelf life of 12 months (India) when kept dry, on pallets and protected from sunlight and rain. Request the current colour card and TDS from Space Arc.
