Fosroc Conplast Controller
A glycol-based shrinkage-reducing admixture that lowers concrete drying shrinkage by up to 80%, protecting water tanks, slabs, basements and bridges from shrinkage cracking.
What is it?
Fosroc Conplast Controller is a liquid shrinkage-reducing admixture (SRA) made from a blend of glycols. Unlike plasticisers or waterproofers, its single job is to attack the root cause of early drying-shrinkage cracking by reducing the capillary tension of pore water as concrete dries.
Where is it used?
Water-retaining and crack-sensitive concrete: water tanks, sewage treatment plants, swimming pools, canals, basements and seal-tight construction, plus slabs, walls, pillars, bridges, viaducts, grain silos and large-area industrial floors.
Why use it?
Drying shrinkage is the leading cause of non-structural cracking in restrained concrete. Conplast Controller can cut shrinkage by up to 80% depending on mix and dosage, drastically reducing crack formation and the leakage, durability and aesthetic problems that follow.
How is it applied?
Dosed at a batching plant at typically 1% by weight of cement (max 3%), added with the mixing water or directly to the mixer. It is designed to run alongside Fosroc’s polycarboxylate (PC) superplasticiser range so the water/cement ratio stays low. Good curing remains essential.
About Fosroc Conplast Controller
Fosroc Conplast Controller is a purpose-built shrinkage-reducing admixture (SRA) from Fosroc’s well-established Conplast family of concrete admixtures. It is supplied as a yellowish liquid composed of a mixture of glycols and is added to the concrete during batching to offset drying shrinkage. Where most of the Conplast range targets workability (superplasticisers such as Conplast SP430), water reduction (Conplast R) or permeability (Conplast WL), Conplast Controller does something different and more specialised: it directly addresses the volume change that concrete undergoes as it loses moisture, which is the single biggest driver of unsightly and durability-threatening cracks in restrained members.
For Indian contractors, consultants and structural engineers, this distinction matters. India’s climate, with its hot summers, low ambient humidity across much of the north and west, and wind exposure on open sites, accelerates surface drying and makes shrinkage cracking a persistent problem on water-retaining structures, large floor slabs, podiums and bridge decks. A conventional water-reducer improves the fresh mix and helps lower the w/c ratio, but it does not stop the hardened concrete from shrinking as free and capillary water evaporates. Conplast Controller works on that later stage of the concrete’s life, reducing the internal surface tension forces that pull the pore structure inward and crack the matrix. Fosroc cites a shrinkage reduction of up to 80%, with the exact figure depending on the concrete and the dosage adopted.
The product is widely positioned for seal-tight and water-retaining work, where even hairline shrinkage cracks can become leakage paths and trigger expensive remediation. It is supplied through Fosroc’s distribution network, and Space Arc Engineering supplies and supports it across Delhi NCR and Pan-India as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, including site advice on trial mixes and dosage optimisation.
The technical insight
Drying shrinkage is governed largely by capillary tension: as water evaporates from the fine pores of hardening concrete, menisci form and exert an inward pull on the pore walls, contracting the matrix. When that contraction is restrained, by reinforcement, formwork, adjacent pours or sub-base friction, tensile stress builds and the concrete cracks. Glycol-based SRAs like Conplast Controller lower the surface tension of the pore solution, which directly reduces this capillary pull and therefore the resulting shrinkage strain. Crucially, it tackles the cause rather than merely bridging the symptom the way fibres or crack-control reinforcement do. Two practical points follow from the chemistry. First, compatibility: Fosroc states Conplast Controller should be used with the polycarboxylate (PC) admixture range so that the w/c ratio can be kept as low as possible, because total water content still strongly influences shrinkage. Second, overdosing is self-penalising: doubling the dose causes retardation of setting time and a loss of compressive strength, so the optimum dosage must be confirmed by trial mixes using the actual site materials rather than assumed. This is a quality-control admixture for crack-sensitive concrete, not a strength or workability booster.
Where it is used
- Water-retaining structures such as water tanks, reservoirs and swimming pools where shrinkage cracks would become leakage paths
- Sewage and effluent treatment plants and other seal-tight, watertight construction
- Basements, canals and below-grade walls and slabs exposed to water and restraint
- Large-area suspended and ground-bearing slabs, including industrial flooring where joints and curling are a concern
- Walls, columns, pillars and other restrained members prone to early-age shrinkage cracking
- Infrastructure elements including bridge decks, viaducts and grain silos
- Foundations and raft slabs where restraint from sub-base friction drives cracking
Key advantages
- Reduces concrete drying shrinkage by up to 80%, depending on the mix and dosage adopted
- Drastically decreases the number and width of cracks caused by shrinkage
- Targets the root cause (capillary tension in pore water) rather than only bridging cracks after they form
- Glycol-based liquid that disperses readily and can be added with mixing water or straight to the mixer
- Compatible with Fosroc’s polycarboxylate (PC) superplasticiser range, keeping the w/c ratio low
- Improves the long-term watertightness and durability of seal-tight and water-retaining structures
- Convenient batching-plant dosing with a low starting dose of around 1% by weight of cement
- Twelve-month shelf life and a range of pack sizes suited to both RMC plants and project sites
Limitations & considerations
- It is a shrinkage-reducing admixture only, not a plasticiser, water-reducer or waterproofer; workability and water reduction must come from a separate compatible admixture
- Should be used specifically with the polycarboxylate (PC) admixture range; pairing it with the wrong admixture chemistry undermines w/c-ratio control
- Overdosing is harmful: roughly doubling the recommended dose delays setting and reduces compressive strength
- Optimum dosage is not fixed and must be established by trial mixes using the actual site materials and conditions
- It reduces but does not eliminate shrinkage, and is not a substitute for good detailing, joint design or proper curing
- Final performance still depends heavily on good curing (curing membrane, water spray or wet hessian), so it cannot compensate for poor site practice
- Intended for plant addition to ready-mixed or batched concrete, not as a site-mixed bucket-dosed product
- Liquid admixture requiring correct storage; freezing, contamination or use beyond shelf life can affect performance
Selection & best practice
Always establish the optimum dosage by laboratory or site trial mixes using the same cement, aggregates and conditions as the actual job, starting from around 1% by weight of cement and never exceeding the 3% maximum. Dose Conplast Controller at the batching plant, either with the mixing water or directly into the mixer, and pair it only with a polycarboxylate (PC) superplasticiser so the water/cement ratio is held as low as possible, since total water content still drives shrinkage. Do not attempt to compensate for a harsh or under-workable mix by overdosing, as roughly doubling the dose causes retardation and strength loss. Treat the admixture as one part of a complete crack-control strategy alongside sound mix design, joint layout and reinforcement detailing. Finally, protect the placed concrete with proper curing using a curing membrane, water spray or wet hessian, because the realised shrinkage benefit depends on good curing. Store the product sealed in its original packaging in a dry place and use it within the twelve-month shelf life.

How we position Fosroc Conplast Controller
Conplast Controller occupies a specialist niche in the Fosroc Conplast range: it is the shrinkage-control admixture, not a workability or waterproofing product. In practice it is specified alongside, rather than instead of, the rest of the range. Pair it with a Fosroc polycarboxylate superplasticiser such as Conplast SP430 (or the Auracast PC range) for workability and a low water/cement ratio, and consider Conplast WL where integral waterproofing of the matrix is also required. Crucially, the user’s site listing of Conplast Controller as a generic superplasticiser/water-reducer/retarder/accelerator/waterproofer is inaccurate; it is fundamentally a glycol-based shrinkage-reducing admixture and should be presented as such to avoid misleading specifiers. Against the wider market, the closest competitors are dedicated SRAs such as Sika’s SikaControl SRA / shrinkage-reducing range, Master Builders Solutions MasterLife SRA grades (e.g. SRA 035 / SRA 872, now also branded under Sika), and shrinkage-control products from suppliers like Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP/MBS in the Indian market. Many of these work on the same capillary-tension principle and quote comparable shrinkage reductions, so selection usually comes down to compatibility with the chosen superplasticiser, local technical support, trial-mix performance on project materials, and commercial terms, areas where authorised distribution and on-site applicator support from Space Arc Engineering add practical value for Delhi NCR and Pan-India projects.
