Fosroc Conplast UW
Chloride-free anti-washout powder admixture that lets you place cohesive, high-strength concrete underwater by tremie or pump without losing fines to the surrounding water.
What is it?
A chloride-free blend of selected polymers, supplied as a light brown powder, that forms a protective gel in the mix water to stop cement and fines washing out of concrete placed underwater.
Where is it used?
Underwater and marine concrete works across India — bridge pile caps, well foundations, marine jetties, harbour and dock structures, cofferdams, scour repairs and seal slabs placed by tremie pipe or concrete pump.
Why use it?
Ordinary concrete loses up to ~60% of its fines when dropped through water; Conplast UW reduces this to under 10%, protecting strength, durability and reinforcement bond while keeping the mix flowable.
How is it applied?
Dosed at 0.6 to 1.0 kg per 100 kg of cement, added towards the end of mixing as complete 4.5 kg units, dispersed for 5-10 minutes, then placed by pump or tremie keeping the pipe embedded in the fresh concrete.
About Fosroc Conplast UW
Fosroc Conplast UW is a single-component, anti-washout admixture engineered for one demanding job: producing sound, dense concrete when it has to be placed under water. It is supplied as a light brown powder — a chloride-free blend of selected polymers — rather than the liquid admixtures most Indian site teams are familiar with. When introduced into the mix, the polymers hydrate to form a viscous gel in the water phase that wraps around cement grains and fine particles, binding them into the matrix so they resist being stripped away as the concrete falls through and sits in water. The result is a cohesive, self-supporting concrete that can be conveyed down a tremie pipe or pushed through a concrete pump while still flowing readily into place. Crucially, Conplast UW carries built-in plasticising and setting-control agents. The increased cohesion needed to fight washout would normally stiffen a mix and tempt a crew to add water on site — exactly the wrong move for strength and durability. The plasticising fraction offsets this, so workability of 180 mm slump or more is held without extra water, while a controlled 3 to 6 hour retardation extends the working window for long tremie pours and travel from a batching plant to remote marine sites. For an Indian distributor like Space Arc Engineering, this is a specialised, project-specific product: it is rarely a stock-room staple, but it is indispensable on the bridge, port and hydraulic projects where pouring concrete in water is unavoidable and getting it wrong means honeycombed, laitance-ridden, low-strength foundations.
The technical insight
The mechanism is rheological, not chemical retardation alone. The polymer gel raises the cohesion and apparent viscosity of the paste so that, under the shear of falling through water, fines stay locked to the cement rather than dispersing — Fosroc’s worked example shows washout after five plunge-test drops dropping from 60% (control) to 9% with Conplast UW at 4.5 kg/m3, at an identical 0.47 w/c ratio, while slump actually rose from 155 mm to 215 mm and 28-day strength held at 55.5 N/mm2 versus 57.5 N/mm2. Two design implications follow for Indian engineers. First, the mix must be designed for underwater placement: a fines (cementitious + passing material) content of roughly 40-55% of total aggregate, cementitious content above 400 kg/m3, 40 mm maximum aggregate (smaller in congested cages) and a pump-grade, flowable mix of at least 180 mm slump / 500 mm flow. Second, dispersion is everything — added as complete 4.5 kg units towards the end of the cycle in a forced-action or truck mixer (never an agitator truck), it needs 5-10 minutes of high-speed mixing to fully activate. The product is verified chloride-free to BS 5075 and CE/UKCA marked to EN 934-2:T4 as a water-retaining admixture, with low alkali content (typically under 6.0 g Na2O equivalent per kg) — relevant where alkali-aggregate reactivity is a concern.
Where it is used
- Tremie-placed concrete for bridge pile caps, well foundations and pier footings in rivers and backwater
- Marine and port structures — jetties, wharves, breakwaters, quay walls and dock foundations
- Seal slabs and plug concrete inside cofferdams and caissons before dewatering
- Underwater repair of scoured pile bases, abutments and hydraulic structures
- Pumped or skip-placed concrete in waterlogged excavations where dewatering is impractical
- Diaphragm-wall and bored-pile concreting where wash-out resistance and cohesion are needed under bentonite or water
Key advantages
- Cuts cement and fines washout from up to ~60% to under 10%, protecting strength, density and durability
- Chloride-free to BS 5075, so it is safe to use in reinforced and prestressed underwater elements
- Maintains normal workability (180 mm+ slump) without adding site water, thanks to integral plasticising agents
- Controlled 3-6 hour retardation gives a longer working window for long tremie pours and transport to remote sites
- Allows higher quality, higher strength underwater concrete by normal methods such as tremie and pump
- Compatible with all ordinary Portland cements and other Fosroc admixtures added separately to the mix
- Low alkali content (typically <6.0 g Na2O eq./kg) supports use where alkali-aggregate reactivity is a risk
- CE / UKCA marked to EN 934-2:T4 with a long 18-month shelf life in sealed packaging
Limitations & considerations
- Does NOT protect concrete in highly turbulent water — e.g. discharging straight from a ready-mix truck into water, or an interrupted tremie that draws water in
- Powder form needs accurate weighing and 5-10 minutes of high-speed mixing; agitator trucks are unsuitable
- Overdosing (roughly double) sharply increases air entrainment and retardation, lowering strength and raising water demand
- Increased cohesion raises water demand, so the mix must be designed and trialled — it is not a drop-in fix for a poor mix
- Requires disciplined tremie technique (pipe kept embedded, steady uninterrupted flow) to perform as intended
- Where PFA is used it generally acts only as a filler and should not be relied on for strength up to ~60 days
- Combustible powder; correct dosage must be confirmed by site trials with the actual materials and conditions
Selection & best practice
Always establish dosage by trial mix using the actual cement, aggregates and placing method, starting at 1.0 kg per 100 kg of cement and reducing only if the plunge/washout test still shows acceptable loss — below 0.6 kg/100 kg is rarely effective. Design a genuinely underwater mix: cementitious content above 400 kg/m3, fines at 40-55% of aggregate, 40 mm max aggregate (less in congested cages) and a flowable 180 mm+ slump. Add Conplast UW as complete 4.5 kg units towards the end of mixing in a sound forced-action or truck mixer (never an agitator truck) and mix at high speed for 5-10 minutes for full activation; adjust workability only with a plasticiser or minimal water afterwards. During placement keep the tremie smooth-bored and embedded, with steady uninterrupted flow, and avoid free-falling concrete through turbulent water. Store the bags in a dry, covered store in original unopened packaging and use within the 18-month shelf life. For project-specific dosage and mix design support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can arrange Fosroc technical assistance and trial guidance.

Industry use cases
Bridges & Highways
Tremie concreting of river pile caps, well foundations and pier footings for road and rail bridges across India’s perennial rivers, where dewatering the foundation is impractical.
Ports & Marine
Casting jetty, wharf, quay-wall and breakwater foundations in tidal and saline water, where wash-out of fines would otherwise leave porous, chloride-vulnerable concrete around reinforcement.

How we position Fosroc Conplast UW
Conplast UW is Fosroc’s purpose-built anti-washout admixture and sits within its broader Conplast admixture family — pair it on underwater jobs with plasticisers/superplasticisers such as Conplast SP430 or Conplast P-series for workability, Conplast UWL as a related underwater option, and Fosroc grouting or repair systems (Conbextra, Renderoc) for above-water finishing of the same structures. As an authorised Fosroc distributor serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering positions Conplast UW honestly as a specialist, trial-driven product rather than a general admixture. Credible competing anti-washout / viscosity-modifying admixtures include Sika’s underwater concrete range, Master Builders Solutions (MBS) MasterMatrix UW products, and offerings from Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP Limited; Dr. Fixit and STP are more widely known in India for waterproofing than for marine anti-washout work. For most bridge, port and hydraulic projects the deciding factors are documented EN 934-2 compliance, chloride-free certification and the strength of local technical support and trial assistance — areas where Fosroc’s TDS data and Space Arc’s on-site service are strong.
