What is it?

A small embedded galvanic (sacrificial) anode: a high-purity zinc core cast around a steel tie wire, encased in a chloride-free, alkali-activated cementitious mortar with an internal pH of 14 or greater. The zinc corrodes preferentially to protect adjacent reinforcing steel.

Where is it used?

Tied to exposed rebar around the perimeter of concrete patch repairs, and embedded in new construction joints, in bridges, marine and coastal RCC, car parks, water-retaining structures and balconies across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

Why use it?

It defeats the ‘incipient anode’ or ‘ring effect’ where fresh repair patches accelerate corrosion in the surrounding old concrete. It needs no external power, no wiring and no monitoring, giving a minimum 20-year anode service life.

How is it applied?

After concrete repair and rebar cleaning, the anode is tied directly to clean steel using the One-and-Done single-wire connection, then encased in a high-flow cementitious embedding mortar before the repair mortar or concrete is placed.

About Fosroc Galvashield XP

Fosroc Galvashield XP is part of Fosroc’s embedded galvanic anode range for the durable repair and rehabilitation of steel-reinforced concrete. It addresses a problem that ordinary patch repair mortars cannot solve on their own. When a corroded, chloride- or carbonation-affected section of concrete is broken out and replaced with fresh, alkaline repair mortar, the steel inside the new patch is re-passivated, but the steel just outside the patch, still sitting in old contaminated concrete, becomes electrochemically anodic relative to the newly passive steel. This sets up accelerated corrosion in a ring around the repair, known in the industry as the incipient anode or “ring effect”, and it is one of the most common reasons concrete repairs fail within a few years.

Galvashield XP interrupts that mechanism. Each unit is a high-purity zinc core cast around a steel tie wire, surrounded by an enhanced, chloride-free cementitious mortar formulated to an internal pH of 14 or greater. The high-alkalinity mortar keeps the zinc electrochemically active throughout its life. Because zinc is far more electrochemically active than steel, the zinc preferentially corrodes (sacrifices itself) and supplies a small protective current to the surrounding reinforcement. The result is a galvanic cathodic-prevention/control system that requires no external DC power supply, no transformer-rectifier, no embedded reference electrodes and no ongoing monitoring, which is exactly why it is attractive on Indian projects where post-installation maintenance and power supply for impressed-current systems are difficult to guarantee.

The XP family is supplied in several sizes (XP2, XP4 and XPX as the BarFit-grooved units, plus the slimmer XP Compact and XPT in the wider range) so the designer can match anode output and zinc mass to the steel density, chloride load and required design life. For Space Arc Engineering’s clients, Galvashield XP is the specification-led answer where a long-term, low-maintenance corrosion outcome matters more than the lowest first cost, typically on bridges, marine and coastal RCC, sewage and water structures, car parks and heritage repairs.

The technical insight

Galvashield XP is a Type 1A anode, meaning the zinc is kept active by the surrounding high-pH (>=14) mortar rather than by a halide (chloride/bromide) activator, so it adds no corrosive constituents into the repair, which lets it be used in pre-stressed, post-tensioned and new concrete where chloride-activated anodes are prohibited. The zinc complies with ASTM B418 Type II. Protection works on simple galvanic principles: in the concrete electrolyte the zinc (more active) couples to the rebar (more noble) and corrodes preferentially, delivering protective current that suppresses incipient-anode formation at the patch interface. Anode selection is not by area alone but by achieving a minimum protective current density over the design life for a given steel surface area, so spacing tightens as chloride content and corrosion risk rise (closer spacing for high-risk, chloride-rich or carbonated concrete; wider for low-to-moderate risk). The One-and-Done single steel connection wire gives a direct steel-to-steel contact with no galvanizing or intermediate coating that could compromise the long-term electrical path.

Where it is used

  • Mitigating incipient-anode / ring-effect corrosion around the perimeter of concrete patch repairs
  • Corrosion control at the interface between new repair mortar/concrete and existing chloride-contaminated or carbonated concrete
  • Repair and rehabilitation of pre-stressed and post-tensioned concrete elements
  • Embedment in new construction joints between new and existing concrete (e.g. bridge widening, slab extension and replacement)
  • Durability protection of reinforcement in severe and marine/coastal service conditions
  • Expansion-joint and construction-joint repairs in RCC structures
  • Long-life repairs to car park decks, balconies, water-retaining and effluent structures

Key advantages

  • Eliminates the incipient-anode ‘ring effect’ that causes premature failure of conventional patch repairs
  • No external power, wiring, transformer-rectifier or monitoring required – true low-maintenance galvanic protection
  • Minimum 20-year anode service life when designed using standard design tables
  • Chloride-free, alkali-activated (Type 1A) mortar adds no corrosive constituents, so it is safe in pre-stressed and post-tensioned concrete
  • One-and-Done single-wire connection installs roughly twice as fast as traditional two-wire anodes
  • Compliant zinc to ASTM B418 Type II with a proven 20+ year global track record
  • BarFit grooved edges and ICRI CSP-3 raised profile aid placement and mechanical bond with repair mortar
  • Multiple sizes (XP2/XP4/XPX, plus XP Compact/XPT) let output and zinc mass be matched to steel density and chloride load

Limitations & considerations

  • Galvanic output is modest – suited to corrosion prevention and control of patch perimeters, not high-current rehabilitation of heavily corroding, high-chloride elements where impressed-current CP may be needed
  • Service life and current output depend heavily on concrete resistivity, moisture, chloride concentration and temperature, so very dry or highly resistive concrete reduces effectiveness
  • Requires sound electrical continuity of the reinforcement; isolated or discontinuous bars must be bonded
  • Anodes must be tied to clean, exposed steel and fully encased in the correct cementitious embedding mortar – poor installation compromises the connection
  • Not a substitute for proper concrete breakout, rebar cleaning and quality repair mortar; it complements, not replaces, good repair practice
  • Spacing and quantity must follow a proper design (steel area, chloride level, risk) – under-specifying anodes leaves gaps in protection
  • Anode units and embedding mortar are alkaline and can irritate skin; standard cementitious-handling PPE is required

Selection & best practice

Treat Galvashield XP as a designed system, not a loose accessory. First complete proper concrete breakout to expose and clean the corroded reinforcement to a bright finish, and confirm electrical continuity of the bars (bond any isolated steel). Select the anode size and spacing from Fosroc/Vector design tables based on the steel surface area, measured chloride content and corrosion-risk category, placing anodes around the full perimeter of the repair (or on a grid for larger areas) with closer spacing in high-chloride or carbonated zones. Tie each anode directly to clean steel using the One-and-Done connection wire to achieve solid steel-to-steel contact, then fully encase the unit in the specified high-flow cementitious embedding mortar (do not rely on the structural repair mortar alone to surround it). Finally place a compatible Fosroc Renderoc repair mortar or micro-concrete. Keep the repair appropriately moist during cure, since the surrounding concrete is the electrolyte the galvanic cell depends on.

Industry use cases

Bridges & highways

Patch repairs to chloride-affected bridge decks, piers and crash barriers, and at joints in bridge-widening or slab-replacement works, where anodes around each repair stop the ring-effect corrosion that otherwise reopens repairs within a few monsoon cycles.

Marine & coastal RCC

Jetties, sea-facing buildings and coastal structures in high-chloride splash/tidal zones where reinforcement corrosion is aggressive and where a no-power galvanic system avoids the upkeep burden of impressed-current CP.

Car parks & commercial decks

Repairs to deck soffits, beams and columns carrying de-icing or wash-down chlorides, protecting the surrounding steel and extending the interval between repair campaigns.

Water & wastewater structures

Sewage treatment tanks, effluent channels and water-retaining RCC where continuous moisture drives corrosion and where Type 1A (chloride-free) chemistry suits sensitive, sometimes pre-stressed, elements.

Heritage & high-value buildings

Discreet, embedded protection for repairs to facades, balconies and historic RCC where surface-mounted CP hardware or visible monitoring equipment is undesirable.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly does Fosroc Galvashield XP do?
It is a sacrificial zinc anode embedded in a concrete repair and tied to the reinforcement. The zinc corrodes preferentially to the steel, supplying a small protective galvanic current that prevents new corrosion sites forming in the old concrete around the patch – the so-called incipient anode or ring effect that causes many repairs to fail early.
Why do I need an anode if I am already using a good repair mortar?
A fresh alkaline patch re-passivates the steel inside it but makes the steel just outside the patch anodic, accelerating corrosion in a ring around the repair. Even an excellent repair mortar cannot stop this electrochemical effect on its own. Galvashield XP at the perimeter is what neutralises it and protects your repair investment.
Does Galvashield XP need electricity or monitoring?
No. It is a galvanic (sacrificial) system, so it generates its own protective current from the zinc-steel couple. There is no external power supply, no transformer-rectifier, no wiring run and no mandatory monitoring – although anode performance can be measured if the project requires it.
Can it be used in pre-stressed or post-tensioned concrete?
Yes. Galvashield XP is a Type 1A, alkali-activated anode with a chloride-free mortar, so it adds no corrosive constituents to the repair. This is why it is suitable for pre-stressed, post-tensioned and new concrete where chloride/halide-activated anodes are prohibited.
How many anodes do I need and how far apart?
Anode size, quantity and spacing are determined by a proper design based on the reinforcement surface area, the measured chloride content and the corrosion-risk category. Spacing tightens in high-chloride or carbonated concrete and widens in low-to-moderate-risk areas. Space Arc Engineering can help size XP2, XP4 or XPX units for your specific repair.
What is the service life of Galvashield XP?
The anodes are designed for a minimum 20-year service life when sized using the standard design tables. Actual life depends on site conditions such as concrete resistivity, moisture, chloride concentration, temperature and anode spacing, since the surrounding concrete acts as the electrolyte for the galvanic cell.
How is Galvashield XP installed?
After breaking out the damaged concrete and cleaning the rebar, each anode is tied directly to the exposed clean steel using the One-and-Done single wire, fully encased in the specified cementitious embedding mortar, and then the structural repair mortar or micro-concrete is placed over it. It is fast to fit and integrates into a standard Fosroc Renderoc repair sequence.

How we position Fosroc Galvashield XP

Galvashield XP sits at the durability end of Space Arc Engineering’s concrete-repair offer: specify it when the goal is to make a repair last 20+ years rather than just patch a defect. It pairs naturally with the rest of the Fosroc repair system – Renderoc HB / HB40 / HB70 hand-applied repair mortars and Renderoc micro-concretes for the breakout reinstatement, Nitozinc Primer / Nitoprime Zincrich for active rebar priming, and Dekguard or Nitomortar surface treatments for anti-carbonation protection – so the anode, repair mortar and coating work as one durability package. Within Fosroc’s own range, step up to Galvashield XP2/XP4/XPX for higher output or larger steel areas, or consider chloride-activated / impressed-current options for heavily corroding, very high-chloride elements where galvanic output alone is insufficient. The same Type 1A embedded-anode technology is marketed by Vector Corrosion Technologies and, in some regions, branded by Sika (Sika Galvashield XP), so cross-specifiers will recognise it as a category standard. Honest alternatives a client may evaluate include Sika FerroGard / Sika galvanic anodes, MBS, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) repair and corrosion-inhibitor systems and STP (Pidilite) protective products; many of those compete on inhibitors or coatings rather than embedded galvanic anodes, so Galvashield XP’s distinct value is the proven, no-power, embedded sacrificial protection of the repair perimeter itself. Space Arc Engineering supplies genuine Fosroc Galvashield XP with design support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
