BrandFosrocCategoryProtective CoatingsFormA two-component, 100% solids epoxy-polysulphide protective coating that cures to a seamless, flexible membrane…

What is it?

A two-component, 100% solids epoxy-polysulphide protective coating that cures to a seamless, flexible membrane combining the chemical/abrasion resistance of epoxies with the flexibility and crack-bridging of polysulphides.

Where is it used?

Effluent and water-retaining structures, sewage and sludge aeration/sedimentation tanks, intake channels, culverts, canals, silos, tanks, industrial floors, car parks, roofing and sub-structural waterproofing.

Why use it?

It bridges cracks up to 2.5 mm, bonds primerless to concrete and steel, resists a wide range of chemicals and abrasion, and is solvent-free (low odour) for fast turnaround in occupied or confined spaces.

How is it applied?

Mix the full hardener into the base, then apply by brush, roller or airless spray to a sound, clean substrate at a minimum total dry film thickness of 500 microns (typically two coats).

About Fosroc Nitocote EPS

Fosroc Nitocote EPS is a two-component, solvent-free protective coating built on an epoxy-polysulphide resin system. The chemistry is deliberate: a straight epoxy gives hardness, adhesion and chemical resistance but tends to be brittle, while polysulphides bring flexibility and movement accommodation. By co-reacting the two, Nitocote EPS delivers a single membrane that is hard-wearing and chemically tough yet stays elastic enough to bridge fine cracks in the substrate, up to 2.5 mm. Once the base and hardener are combined and applied, the material cures to a seamless, jointless waterproofing film with no solvent flash-off, which is why it is so widely specified for tanks, channels and confined effluent structures where ventilation is poor and downtime is expensive. For contractors and consultants in India, Nitocote EPS sits in the same family as Fosroc’s broader Nitocote protective-coating range, but it is the grade reached for when a project needs both chemical resistance and genuine flexibility in one coat. It is a high-build product: protection is engineered around a minimum total dry film thickness (DFT) of 500 microns, applied at roughly 2 m2 per litre per 500-micron pass, so a typical specification builds the membrane in two coats. Because it is primerless on most properly prepared concrete and steel, it cuts a step out of the application cycle compared with many epoxy systems that demand a separate primer. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Nitocote EPS as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, pairing the material with surface-preparation, detailing and inspection support so the membrane performs to its rated thickness on site, not just on the datasheet.

The technical insight

The defining property of Nitocote EPS is its flexibility-to-toughness balance. As a 100% solids, solvent-free system (specific gravity approximately 1.50), it loses almost no volume on curing, so the applied wet film translates almost directly into dry film, making the 500-micron minimum DFT realistically achievable in two coats at roughly 2 m2/litre/500 microns. The polysulphide fraction is what allows the cured film to bridge cracks up to 2.5 mm without rupturing, accommodating the thermal and structural movement that cracks rigid epoxy linings. Working time is temperature-sensitive and must be planned around: pot life is about 3 hours at 25 degrees C but drops to roughly 1 hour 45 minutes at 35 degrees C, so on a hot Indian site mixed material has to be applied promptly. Tack-free time is around 6 hours at 25 degrees C (3 hours at 35 degrees C), the recoat/overcoat window is about 24 hours at 25 degrees C (12 hours at 35 degrees C), and full chemical cure takes about 7 days at 25 degrees C (3 days at 35 degrees C) before the structure is filled or put into aggressive service. The practical takeaway: schedule coats within the overcoat window, respect the full-cure period before immersion, and adjust for ambient temperature because every key time roughly halves between 25 and 35 degrees C.

Where it is used

  • Sewage and sludge aeration and sedimentation tanks
  • Water and effluent intake channels, culverts and canals
  • Silos, storage tanks and process vessels (concrete and steel)
  • Protective lining for concrete and steel exposed to chemical attack
  • Industrial flooring in warehouses, food-processing areas and paper mills
  • Multi-storey and basement car-park decks subject to abrasion
  • Roofing and sub-structural waterproofing
  • Confined or poorly ventilated structures where low-odour, solvent-free coatings are required

Key advantages

  • Tough yet flexible cured film combining epoxy chemical resistance with polysulphide elasticity
  • Bridges cracks up to 2.5 mm, accommodating substrate movement
  • Excellent chemical, abrasion and impact resistance
  • Solvent-free and low odour, minimising downtime and suiting confined spaces
  • Primerless on most properly prepared concrete and steel, saving an application step
  • 100% solids so applied film builds efficiently to the required DFT
  • Seamless, jointless waterproofing membrane with no overlaps to fail
  • Applies by brush, roller or airless spray for flexibility on site

Limitations & considerations

  • Performance depends on achieving the full 500-micron minimum DFT; thin or uneven application reduces protection
  • As an epoxy-based system, surface preparation is critical, the substrate must be sound, clean, dry and free of laitance, oil and contaminants
  • Pot life is short and shortens further in heat (around 1 hr 45 min at 35 degrees C), so mixed material must be used quickly
  • Full chemical cure takes up to 7 days at 25 degrees C before immersion or aggressive service
  • Epoxy chemistry can chalk or fade in prolonged direct UV; a UV-stable topcoat may be specified for cosmetic exposed work
  • Application and cure are temperature-sensitive, low temperatures slow cure and high temperatures cut working time
  • Two-component product, accurate full-pack mixing of base and hardener is essential, part-mixing is not recommended

Selection & best practice

Prepare the substrate thoroughly first: concrete should be at least 28 days old, sound and free of laitance, oil and curing compounds (grit-blasting or mechanical abrasion is preferred), and steel should be blast-cleaned to a clean profile. Make sure the surface is dry and dust-free before coating. Always mix a complete pack, adding the entire hardener can to the base and power-stirring to a uniform colour and consistency, never split-mix. Plan around temperature: in hot weather, mix smaller batches and apply quickly to respect the reduced pot life, and avoid application on rising-temperature substrates that can cause pinholing. Build the coating to the specified minimum 500-micron total DFT, typically in two coats, and apply the second coat within the overcoat window (about 24 hours at 25 degrees C) so the coats chemically bond, if the window is exceeded, abrade and clean before recoating. Use Fosroc Solvent 102 only for tool and equipment cleaning as directed, not to thin the coating. Allow the full cure period (up to 7 days at 25 degrees C) before filling tanks or exposing the lining to chemicals, and verify wet/dry film thickness during application with a comb/DFT gauge to confirm the membrane meets specification.

Frequently asked questions

What type of coating is Fosroc Nitocote EPS?
It is a two-component, solvent-free epoxy-polysulphide protective coating. The hybrid chemistry combines the chemical and abrasion resistance of epoxies with the flexibility of polysulphides, curing to a tough yet flexible, seamless waterproofing membrane.
What thickness should Nitocote EPS be applied at?
To achieve its rated protective and waterproofing performance it must be applied at a minimum total dry film thickness of 500 microns. At a coverage of about 2 m2 per litre per 500-micron pass, this is typically built in two coats.
Does Nitocote EPS need a primer?
On most properly prepared concrete and steel it is primerless, which removes a step from the cycle. Surface preparation remains critical: the substrate must be sound, clean, dry and free of laitance, oil and contaminants for the coating to bond.
How much movement or cracking can it accommodate?
The polysulphide content gives the cured film flexibility and the ability to bridge cracks up to 2.5 mm, making it suitable for structures that experience thermal or minor structural movement that would crack a rigid epoxy lining.
What is the pot life and how long before it is fully cured?
Pot life is about 3 hours at 25 degrees C and roughly 1 hour 45 minutes at 35 degrees C, so mixed material should be used promptly in hot weather. Tack-free is about 6 hours at 25 degrees C, recoat within about 24 hours, and full cure takes up to 7 days at 25 degrees C (around 3 days at 35 degrees C) before immersion or chemical service.
What surfaces and applications is it suited to?
It is used on concrete and steel in effluent and water-retaining structures, sewage and sludge tanks, channels and culverts, silos and tanks, industrial floors, car parks, food-processing areas, roofing and sub-structural waterproofing.
What pack size is it supplied in and how is it stored?
Nitocote EPS is supplied in 10 litre packs as base plus hardener. It has a shelf life of 12 months in original unopened containers when stored dry between 5 and 30 degrees C; storage at high temperatures reduces shelf life.

How we position Fosroc Nitocote EPS

Within the Fosroc protective-coatings range, Nitocote EPS is the grade to specify when a project needs both chemical resistance and real flexibility in a single membrane. It sits alongside related Fosroc options that a consultant might weigh against it: the Nitocote EP-series solvent-free epoxies (such as Nitocote EP405, widely used for potable-water tanks) deliver excellent chemical resistance but are more rigid, while Nitocote EPSW is the closely related variant in the same epoxy-polysulphide family. For heavy chemical containment, Fosroc’s Nitoflor and Nitocote chemical-resistant linings are alternatives, and for pure flexible waterproofing without the same chemical duty, Fosroc’s Proofex and Brushbond ranges may be more economical. Against competitor products, credible alternatives in the Indian market include Sika (Sikagard and Sikafloor epoxy/PU coatings), MBS (MYK), Dr. Fixit (Pidilite, for waterproofing-led specifications) and STP Limited, each of which offers epoxy or polysulphide-modified coatings in this space. Nitocote EPS distinguishes itself by combining 2.5 mm crack-bridging, primerless application and a solvent-free, low-odour formulation in one product, which is particularly valuable for confined effluent and tank structures. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering can advise on the right grade for a given exposure and supply genuine material with application support across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
