Fosroc Nitocote UP
Solvent-free, primerless coal tar epoxy coating that waterproofs and protects concrete and steel in aggressive, water-immersed and effluent-exposed environments.
What is it?
A three-pack, solvent-free epoxy coating modified with coal tar, applied in two coats to form a tough, impermeable barrier on concrete and steel.
Where is it used?
Sewage and effluent treatment plants, water-retaining structures, underground tanks, foundations, splash zones and buried concrete where chemical attack and permanent dampness are a concern.
Why use it?
It combines waterproofing with chemical and abrasion resistance in one primerless system, can go onto green concrete, and does not support bacterial growth — cutting coats, time and whole-life cost.
How is it applied?
Mix the three pre-weighed packs, then apply two coats by brush, roller or spray at roughly 200 micron wet film per coat, building thickness to suit the exposure.
About Fosroc Nitocote UP
Fosroc Nitocote UP is a heavy-duty protective and waterproof coating built on solvent-free epoxy resins that are modified with coal tar. The result is a thick-film, chemically resistant membrane engineered for the harshest concrete and steel environments — the kind found in sewage and effluent works, water-retaining structures, buried tanks and foundations, and other permanently damp or chemically loaded settings. For contractors, consultants and asset owners across India, it sits firmly in the corrosion-protection and waterproofing toolkit rather than in the decorative or light-duty coatings space.
The product is supplied as a three-pack system in pre-weighed quantities, so the base resin, hardener and filler/coal-tar component arrive in the correct ratio ready for on-site mixing. This removes the most common source of failure on protective-coating jobs in the field — incorrect on-site batching — and makes it well suited to remote project sites and large structures where consistency across many litres matters. Once mixed, Nitocote UP is laid in two coats by brush, roller or airless spray, typically at around 200 micron wet film thickness per coat, with the option to build greater thickness where exposure is severe.
Two characteristics make it stand out for Indian infrastructure work. First, it is a primerless (self-priming) system, so a separate primer coat is not required on properly prepared substrates — saving a material, a labour pass and a day of programme. Second, it can be applied to green (recently cast, still-curing) concrete, which is valuable on fast-track civil works where waiting weeks for full concrete maturity is not an option. Combined with its impermeable, waterproof film and resistance to bacterial growth, this makes Nitocote UP a pragmatic, cost-driven choice for sewage, water and below-ground protection. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator covering Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies Nitocote UP with batch-correct packs and application guidance for each exposure class.
The technical insight
Coal tar epoxy coatings like Nitocote UP work by marrying two chemistries: the cross-linked epoxy network gives mechanical toughness, adhesion and chemical resistance, while the coal tar pitch contributes very low water and vapour permeability plus excellent resistance to dilute acids, alkalis, salts and biological attack. That combination is why coal tar epoxies became the long-standing benchmark for immersed and buried steel and concrete. Because Nitocote UP is solvent-free, the applied film cures to near-full thickness without the shrinkage and pinholing that solvent flash-off can cause, allowing a genuine high-build, near-continuous barrier in two coats rather than four or five thin ones. Specifiers should note two practical realities: coal tar epoxies are dark (typically black/dark brown) and are not colour-stable or decorative, and because they are coal-tar based, many markets and clients now favour coal-tar-free alternatives on health and environmental grounds — Fosroc itself offers coal-tar-free equivalents such as Nitocote ET402E. Always confirm exact film thickness, coverage, pot life, overcoat windows and cure times against the current region-specific Technical Data Sheet for India before specifying, as these vary with grade, temperature and the edition of the datasheet.
Where it is used
- Internal and external protection of concrete in sewage and effluent treatment plants
- Waterproofing and protection of water-retaining structures, reservoirs and channels
- Coating of buried and submerged concrete tanks, sumps and foundations
- Corrosion protection of structural steelwork in immersed, splash-zone and below-ground service
- Lining of culverts, drains and channels exposed to flowing effluent and abrasion
- Protection of concrete subject to mild chemical attack from dilute acids, alkalis and salts
- Damp-proof and tanking applications on green or mature concrete in basements and below-grade structures
Key advantages
- Primerless, self-priming system — no separate primer coat, saving material, labour and programme time
- Solvent-free formulation allows high-build films in two coats with reduced pinholing
- Excellent chemical resistance to dilute acids, alkalis, salts and effluent
- Strong abrasion resistance for flowing-water and high-traffic immersed surfaces
- Impermeable, waterproof barrier that also functions as a tanking/damp-proof membrane
- Can be applied to green (still-curing) concrete, supporting fast-track civil programmes
- Does not support bacterial or fungal growth — suited to sewage and water environments
- Supplied as pre-weighed three-pack units, eliminating on-site mixing-ratio errors
- Versatile application by brush, roller or airless spray to suit access and area
Limitations & considerations
- Coal-tar based — increasingly restricted or discouraged on health/environmental grounds; many clients now specify coal-tar-free alternatives (e.g. Fosroc Nitocote ET402E)
- Dark colour only (black/brown); not decorative, not UV/colour-stable for exposed aesthetic finishes
- Requires thorough surface preparation — clean, sound, laitance-free substrate for full adhesion
- Epoxy chemistry is temperature-sensitive: low temperatures slow cure, high temperatures shorten pot life
- Limited pot life once the three packs are combined — mix only what can be applied in time
- Not a structural repair or screed product — used as a coating over a prepared/repaired substrate
- Exact cure, coverage and overcoat figures must be confirmed against the current India-specific TDS
Selection & best practice
Prepare the substrate thoroughly: remove laitance, dust, oil and curing-compound residues by grit blasting or mechanical scabbling, and make good honeycombing or defects with a suitable Fosroc repair mortar (e.g. the Renderoc range) before coating. Mix the full three-pack contents in the supplied ratio using a slow-speed drill and paddle until uniform — never split packs or hand-batch. Apply the first coat well-worked into the surface to wet out and seal, then apply the second coat at the recommended wet film thickness once the first has reached the overcoat window stated on the current TDS. Use a wet-film gauge to verify each coat, maintain ventilation in confined spaces such as tanks and sumps, and protect freshly coated surfaces from rain, standing water and traffic until fully cured. Allow the full specified cure before water immersion or chemical exposure, and always work to the India-specific Technical Data Sheet for batch-correct mixing ratios, pot life and cure times at the site temperature.

How we position Fosroc Nitocote UP
Within the Fosroc protective-coatings range, Nitocote UP is the value-driven, heavy-duty coal tar epoxy for immersed and buried concrete and steel — sitting alongside coal-tar epoxies like Nitocote ET402 and its coal-tar-free successor Nitocote ET402E, and adjacent to chemically resistant epoxy coatings such as Nitocote EP405 and the EPU/PU options for situations needing lighter colour or polyurethane durability. It pairs naturally with Fosroc surface-prep and repair systems (the Renderoc mortars) and with Nitoprime/Nitobond ranges where conditioning or bonding is required. Against the wider Indian market, credible alternatives depend on the brief: Sika offers coal tar and coal-tar-free epoxy coatings (Icosit/Sikagard families) for similar immersion duty; Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and STP (Shalimar/Bituseal) are strong on tanking and waterproof barrier coatings for below-grade concrete; and MBS supplies epoxy protective coatings for tanks and effluent structures. The honest positioning: specify Nitocote UP when you want a proven, low-cost, primerless waterproof-plus-chemical barrier and a dark non-decorative finish is acceptable — but if the client restricts coal tar, needs a lighter or colour-stable finish, or faces strong acid/UV exposure, move to a coal-tar-free epoxy (Nitocote ET402E) or a PU/specialist system. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, supplies and applies the correct option for your exposure and compliance requirements across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
